The school is very diverse and a lower budget choice. I graduated from their science/education programs. I found my degree in Biology to be challenging and largely based on book memorization with occasional hands on experience. Their lab experience seemed dated compared to other institutions. This tends to be the nature of Biology, but I wouldn't say they excelled in making the experience amazing or poor. Their education program however was very lacking. It seemed out of touch with employers/districts needs. There was little to no focus on methodology, classroom management techniques other than case studies. These are the two most important skills needed in order to achieve student mastery. They did not model what they taught and I found many of their classes to be instructor led discussions about student based teaching. There was an immense amount of time spent on lesson plans and preparing portfolio's. While both are important record keeping practices, they should have been interwoven into a curriculum focused on skills based learning.

This school is on its' way out. They fired half the staff during the state budget impasse in 2017, so now class sections are extra-packed and to get in with a teacher who is of any quality you must be prepared months and months in advance. The leadership of the school is extremely corrupt, during the budget impasse they paid 30K of your tuition to an Obama advisor to come deliver the commencement speech at graduation. I also personally had a minor issue with my student aid application for loans & grants that, due to an issue on the school's end, combined with the fact that everyone there is not motivated to help, resulted in me being passed from department to department, ruining my life and forcing me to drop out of school and work overnights for a year because I could not get the issue fixed. I will never again come back to NEIU. You will be closed down or forced to go private soon enough and good riddance! Edit: By the way, the computer science department has a few good teachers who truly care about their students. However, due to the plummeting enrollment there is only about 1-2 sections for these teachers every semester, and they are full on day one. Important classes that are necessary to proceed in the degree have maybe 2 sections total, and are taught by 90 year old teachers who will actually call their students "retarded" for asking questions in class. This school needs to be shut DOWN DOWN DOWN! DO NOT COME HERE

Currently in my senior year graduating from the biology department with a major in secondary education. Just going to list pro's and cons. Yelp is filtering all poor reviews. You can read their negative comments in their "filtered" section. Pro: Cheap comparitively. you get a degree and most places don't care from where. you can get some pretty good professors. Con: - They are way behind technologically I include a limited selection of classes and a difficult registration system. They are getting better but not there. The biology department is poorly equiped, again getting better though. - The professors have been threatening a strike for 2 years because top management received a 30% pay raise while faculty has received a pay freeze. Strike = no classes. This is plastered all over campus. - advisors are not qualified and often miss needed requirements. Of 3 friends who have graduated 3 had to get special overrides after being refused graduation due to advisor oversights. I am included in this as I have already prearranged graduation overrides. - communication is non existent and I am convinced that the phone lines to the financial aid office are dummy lines. I have never had a phone call answered or a message returned in 4 years. Financial advisors WILL return calls after 24-48 hours. You have to go in in person. All of this could be overlooked except the graduation problems. Most of this can be chalked up to normal college failure but the problem graduating on time can cost you an extra 1-2 semesters and you won't find out until a week or two before the semester you plan on walking for graduation.

I had a great experience at this school. Lots of smart professors and lots of diversity among the students. Plenty of good places to study in the library. The Fine Arts building was my favorite.

Worst nightmare of my life. I DO NOT RECOMMEND this school to anybody. The financial aid office staff "advisors" made me not to attend this school. They were incompetent, helpless and rude. They seemed like they don't even know what they are doing. I got RIPPED OFF and SCAMmed by this school.

Shameful. I "transferred" here from SDSU. They made so many errors with my transcripts & I needed them to be reevaluated repeatedly. They never got them right. Vladimir Fernandez was my advisor & unfortunatley the only person standing between me & signing up for classes. He continuously ignored my calls, emails, & attempts to meet him at his office. He no called no showed me on at least 2 occasions. This went on for 2 months. After calling anyone & everyone I could think of to help me get Vladimir to take his job seriously the Dean of B&M returned my call. He apoligized profusely & promised he would make it right. Nothing ever happened. This "college" stole my time, money, & sanity. If you are serious about your education stay far away from Northeastern. I couldn't make this stuff up if I tried.

It is honestly a college where if you want to get a good grade without even trying. I'm sorry to say but not worth time no matter if it's free.

This school is filled with Professors and Administrators who discriminate openly against minority students (asian origin) especially those with learning disability. I struggled a lot at this institution because the school officials (particularly refused) here openly refused to accept the impact of my learning disability in completing my education. I understand that as a student it is important to be proactive and to learn coping skills to overcome my learning disability, but I still think reasonable accommodations should be provided if the disability severely impacts your education. Likewise, If you are minority student, don't even bother writing an appeal to the dean or the chair because most of the time it will be denied because the school administrators don't care about minority students. If you are a student of Asian background, avoid this school at all cost.

I’m not a big fan of the campus or most of the classrooms given how old and outdated everything seems but overall NEIU is a great school with a welcoming environment, friendly atmosphere, safe neighborhood, and the BEST part is some of the professors who you’ll encounter/have class with are ABSOLUTELY AMAZING and passionate about what they’re doing!!! I feel encouraged, inspired, and like I receive the help I need.

NEIU is great. Professors and students are smart. Tuition is cheap. I heard negative things about NEIU before I came, but they were just wrong. I do not have even one negative thing to say. I highly recommend it.

joey hustle

Good school. Very diverse. Population is a reflection of the neighborhood. Some really good teachers and some that get a slight thrill out of making students suffer. There are many things to do on campus between classes and it feels less like a "city school" and more like you are just on a college campus.

Leona

This University is awesome because the campus is very huge and the professors and the employees are great and the classes are great and my major is criminal justice and atmosphere is warm and the cafeterias are great and the surroundings are great I love sitting outside just relaxing and chatting with friends. I will recommend this school the friends.

Worst university in Chicago my last education professor rachel holtz did a 20 minute snack time to start class instead of using that time to teach also was told she would not help struggling students because she wanted to have a social life and didn't have time. Avoid this university at all costs. Also was dropped by the university from a class the day after full reimbursement was offered so had to pay for a class they dropped me from. Graduated from here in 08 and went back for a few classes but now am ashamed i ever graduated from this terrible school.

Excellent education! Teachers who know their students on a first name basis and truly care about the quality of the education offered. Student input is used to shape innovative course materials that apply in the real world. 2012, rated by Newsweek Magazine in the top ten, along with Harvard and Stanford, for best value in a college education in the U.S.

There is no accountability, poor curriculum design. Faculty never gets back to you (answer phone calls, email, etc.) Faculty members play childish games. Buyer Beware. You won't be paying for an education. Graduate school treats its students as children not adults. The school needs to clean house or close.

Horrible University! The classes here are a joke some teachers treat us like were in high school? I mean if you want straight As with out trying go here however; if you actually want to learn material do not go to this COLLEGE! BEWARE!

Shawnterra Rogers

If I can give this "school" 0 stars, I certainly would. As a freshman, this has been far the worst choice I could have ever decided to take. This "school" is one big SCAM. They charge us for the most dumbest things possible. Oh, and don't live on campus neither you'll hate it. Here's what they do, they trick you into living in the campus apartments. They tell us how nice things will be just later for the management team to do us so dirty. The RAs are horrible. I've had RAs flirt with me saying sexual things, coming into the apartment without notification etc. They changed our guest policy I am not allowed to have my family spend the night over when they want anymore, it's now only Fridays and Saturdays. This is not what I signed a lease for. This is not what I came out of my pocket for ($350) for my deposits. The managers literally SUCK they have had complaints about bed bugs and rats, yet no action has been taken. They charge us over 5k a semester just to be told what the hell to do. This upcoming semester will be 11K for the 2018-2019 year. Back to NEIU, the campus is extremely old and dirty. The bathrooms are nasty, the classrooms barely get cleaned we have to come into class cleaning. This school is over populated also. The professors are seriously a JOKE, I'm waiting for someone to pinch me because I have to be dreaming. When emailing them, they are very disrespectful. Just last week I emailed a teacher asking to meet with him if he had a open office hour he responded with "who are you and why" JUST LIKE THAT. They are extremely rude and very racist. The professors offer little to ANY support whatsoever. I registered for a class just to be told "I've stopped adding people". YET when another student which whom was not of COLOR registered a week later, she was added. I have not learned one thing attending here, all the classes are high school classes considering that I take 100 levels and up. I've had so many doors slammed in my face since I've been here. Financial Aid really breaks my heart because they're extremely rude. I've been told "whatever, I can't help you" "set up a payment plan or we will send you to the collections agency". I have no help in this place, Professors ans Advisers pick and choose who they want to help. I've had very bad issues prior to coming here but being in The Nest and attending NEIU has really made depression worst as to where I'm seeing a Therapist. Just getting out of bed for class is hard. Considering it's only my second semester, I should be enjoying things but unfortunately I have not. I've tried and tried with NEIU considering the graduation rate of 24%, I'm sure to be transferring very soon. If you value your education and most importantly your happiness, please pursue into another school. Enjoy your college experience, have fun, LEARN as much as you can, do you best. College should never make you want to commit suicide or be depressed, stress is fine but NEIU isn't the place. This is one big scam. Really do your research! -Thank you

It was a very much welcoming community university and I liked the environment. The gardening at this school is always so well done. Also my professors that I've had have been super knowledgeable on their courses and always keep me interested. Their is also a diversity of students that are unique and nice enough on campus.

Thomas H.

The administration is a joke. I have been here for a year or two now and I have to say that the administration has no idea what other departments do, much less their own department. The teaching staff if absolutely fantastic, and are the only reason aside from the student organizations that this place doesn't get one star. But to answer one simple question took one week and being bounced back and fourth between the same 4 departments 13 times (I counted). To get anything done, you really have to be a nuisance to these people. BUT, The financial aid office and the career counseling services are great. Although crazy overworked and just a tad slow because of it (can't blame them), the financial aid office actually cares about your account.

Coming in as a transfer student, the CMT department made me feel at home. These teachers are passionate about their jobs and the success of their students. They do a great job encouraging students to ask questions and are willing to help and go over things that are not understood. The diversity at this school allowed me to get insight on beliefs and opinions other than my own and pushed me to be more open-minded.

Absolute trash school. This review is a few years late. Still dealing with debt from them. Several years ago I was hit with a bat and couldn't make it to school. I dropped my classes online and called the proper office to ensure the withdrawal. Nothing was done, and I was left owing over 1,000 dollars and was given F's for all my classes because my classes were never dropped on their end. I spoke to a woman, who was a higher up in this department, and she assured me there should be no issue with a late withdrawal petition. After months and months of hearing nothing I send an e-mail inquiring again, just to be told "your late withdrawal petition has been denied" with no further explanation. This was several years ago. I managed to get all the F's changed to W's, but now, in 2019, my tax refund that I needed to use to put food on my table and clothes on my back was given straight to this absolute dump of a university! Over a debt that their own incompetence caused. If you are going to deal with people's livelihoods, put people in the office who come ready to work and speak ENGLISH. Because of this entire hassle with the dropping of the classes, not only do I owe the school money (because if you get F's with financial aid, they put the bill on you), but my grace period for my loans ended, so now I have collection agencies wanting money for both, and I've had problems finding housing, even had a point of homelessness, because of the result of how negatively this school has impacted my life. PARENTS/FUTURE/NEW COLLEGE STUDENTS: SEND YOUR KIDS TO WRIGHT OR TRITON FOR THE FIRST TWO YEARS, DO NOT WASTE THE TIME OR MONEY DEALING WITH THIS INSTITUTION. EVEN AFTER THAT, IF YOU CANNOT AFFORD REAL UNIVERSITY, DONT BOTHER SPENDING THE MONEY GOING HERE AT ALL.

This is a casual and careless school. They are exceedingly difficult to get ahold of. They had two clerical errors in their system that they can't seem to coordinate between departments to correct. Disorganization is rampant, no one seems to care about anything besides getting you to sit in a class and collect your money. If I wasn't calling to sit or give them money they ignored me. They never returned my phone calls when I would leave a message.

Have to give it 1 star because administration is so trash it takes away from the whole school. Nice not too expensive small school in a safe diverse area. Some of the classrooms are old and still use chalk boards. Decent teachers. Horrible management that are on different pages. Confused advisors. Friendly atmosphere. Average students. Nice dorms.

I don't know HOW this place has a 4 star rating. Maybe too many administrators ARE on here using their fake accounts to boost up the rating so that they can fill up the declining enrollment. If I had an option, I would give this place a 0 (if the rating scale allowed). Even my dog would not go here if he was given an option. The administrators care about themselves, the professors don't care about their students, and nobody listens to the students at this University. If you are a STEM major avoid this school as you would be treated like trash. Go somewhere else like UIC or loyola

The enrollment center never let me know I was readmitted until I called them ! According to the supervisor enrollment center, I was supposed to get a letter of acceptance about 4 weeks ago! Another thing, is the financial aid office really sucks! At first they said I was gonna be getting a loan! Even though, my income was only $40 last year !! Plus my husband income was only $11, 421 last year ! I applied early for financial aid on January 3 ! Then I had to go to financial aid office to speak with a financial aid advisor to ask her about my loans! The lady at the front desk checked my account and said I should be recieving some grants too ! My income was low ! That's why I had to speak to advisor! She said loans should be posted on my account between Tuesday and Thursday! I check my account then ! I checked it each of them days! But nothing on my account! Weeks went passed nearly a month ! Then I had to call the financial aid office to tell them I'm supposed to be getting loans! They said I will not be getting loans! There is no loans on my account! They said they can't tell me what type of aid I'm supposed to be getting! I have to check myself! I checked my account its was a combination of grants and work study award! Thanks God for the aid ! Now I'm having a very hard time getting hired by a work study job ! All or most of these work study jobs you gotta have some kind of experience and/or skills! They are very picky ! They act like they don't wanna hire nobody! I went to student employment office but they was not much help at all ! I called career services too but there program is very picky too ! I'm so tired of this damn school already and the semester didn't even start yet ! I remember northeastern Illinois university was better in 2001 to 2002 when I was last there! Now they just sucks really sucks!

Mandy Eng

I was an undergrad here for around two years(freshman to Sophomore). Afterwards, I transferred out. From the two years I've been there, I can at least say the professors are not terrible. I understand you wont have all perfect teachers that will help or accommodate you, but overall, they're not terrible. The professors are Average- nothing too- too special to complain about, but not awful. However, the MAIN reason I'm giving this school 2/5 stars is due to the schools's Financial Department, even the Study abroad department wasn't coordinated properly(that's a whole other story and don't wanna rant about that here) They caused me and my parents almost NOTHING but frustration. I'm sure many people down the comment section would agree with me on this issue. From my experience with them, they are unprofessional- meaning can't handle information properly, don't return phone calls, nor work with student's problem, uncoordinated- No one is Cooperating with each other to solve the student's problem, they just get passed from person-to-person hoping the other staff would help the student, and unorganized(need I say more about this matter?). If it weren't for the Financial Aid department being a total mess, then I'd give it a solid 3 or 4 star. Needlessness to say, you get what you paid for. If you have some extra $ saved up, then it's definitely worth going to a school that costs a lil' more. I currently attend a private college that costs more, but with better quality and Financial department that COOPERATES. This is just my constructive criticism. I have nothing against the school, but the Financial Department HAS to CHANGE, or at least do their job more efficiently!

An Excellent School!!! I went through taking Data Structures and Pascal programming language before getting into the Computer Science Masters program. This program helped me to build a strong base for my professional future. Loved two and half years of schooling there and miss it!!! I came across very caring teachers during this course.

It's still odd to me that you could go to a college, get trained in a discipline, graduate, and still not have all the requirements for city or state certification. This
