REVIEWS OF Savannah State University IN Georgia

All Things Pretty

I honestly hate to write a negative review however I want to tell the truth about my experience at SSU. Fall of 2016 i started my freshmen year at SSU with a positive outlook, very excited to begin college. I heard all the negative things said about Savannah State but refused to believe them and wanted to see for myself (looking back i wish i had listened). I was a Political Science major and had no academic adviser for the whole school year (Fall 2016-Spring 2017). Apparently the political science adviser had a medical issue, which caused her absence. The school never replaced the adviser and i struggled the entire year to register for classes, get advice, drop classes and add classes. The other advisers were expected to pick up the slack but had TERRIBLE attitudes about having extra students to advise and didn't want to see me or other other Political Science majors. Moving on to campus life : the students are ghetto (fights everyday), the food is nasty, many robberies on campus and the administration is rude and unhelpful to the students. I stayed in Bowen my first semester and it was awful. The dorms had mold, were very old and the bathrooms never had tissue and were always dirty (I moved to Tiger Place 2nd semester and it was much better). This is not a school i would recommend to others. On a positive note, the teachers were good overall.

We went for a college visit in July 2019. We didn't do an official visit because they only do those 2 days week in the summer, and that was fine. This is one of MANY college visits my husband and I have been on with this being our fourth and final child who's preparing for college. This was a unique experience. We got to the campus and was stopped at an entrance gate by a security guard. <--unusual item #1 - we've never had to be admitted on any campus . The security guard then asked each adult for our licenses to check in. <--unusual item #2 - we've never had to sign in just to get on campus. I asked WHY we had to sign in. What's the reason for the strict security? We were told, BY THE SECURITY GUARD, that there have been some robberies and shootings and they keep track of who's all on campus. <-- unusual item #3 - 1st - you didn't check us, our car, nor our background so what's the point of the ID check. 2nd -my other daughter goes to Texas Tech University and they had a school shooting that took the life of a police officer, but they didn't have to permanently put the school on lockdown. The guard advised us that we are not allowed to take any photos on campus, nor go into any buildings. <-- unusual item #4 - we never got an explication for this rule. Just, "it's justa rule". Going into buildings we understood, but photos???? After reading these reviews, and our unusual visit, we will take all of the advice to stay away from SSU. We don't feel comfortable in their ability to keep our daughter safe. My daughter will keep her focus on Howard University at this time. She just didn't want to go that far north (winter/snow).

My son was held up a gun point in 2015 and falsely labeled as a gang member. This was after another student was shot an killed on campus. I tried to speak with the president or anyone else who cared but was given the run around. I finally withdrew my child.

Funny that people are mentioning issues with housing. I thought my daughter's application was the only one that was lost. She applied for housing in May. After several phone calls receiving the run around, I finally insisted that they actually look in their system instead of just giving me bogus, made up answers. Long story short, her application was finally retrieved but she didn't get the housing that we had requested possibly due to this lost application. Update: My daughter has now been at that school for 3 years. They never offer the classes needed to graduate. They don't return emails or phone calls. The advisors are idiots. Financial aid and the registrars office are a joke. This place is absolutely terrible. If you would like to graduate within a reasonable amount of time, don't enroll here. I've been trying to get my child to transfer since she got to this hell hole. Finally my prayers have been answered.

Extremely unorganized and too many foreign professors who can hardly speak English, registration process for classes is always a problem as well as dealing with financial aid

My SSU experience shaped and molded the person I have become. The camaraderie, family like environment, and life long friendships and bonds formed at this HBCU has lasted a lifetime. SSU is a microcosm of the real world. There are challenges, stressful times, triumphs, and celebrations. SSU should be proud of its' mission, which includes serving a diverse, varied and sometimes underserved student populous. It is true, most, if not all, institutions have flaws and issues, but the more important question becomes how to best overcome those issues to leave SSU a better place? SSU was the catalyst and start of my career. I owe her much. It is true what they say "You Can Get Anywhere From Here." SSU.

We visited for a campus tour. Everything was so unorganized and unprofessional. There were too many people in each group and we stood outside of buildings talking about beach parties instead of academics and organizations. We left the tour when the group stopped to review artwork and chat. One of my daughters is interested in SCAD and the other SSU but I really can't envision sending her here for an education.

Don't transfer from another school to here! They screwed me out of SO many credits from my last school. I was here for 2 years and basically got nowhere. A lot of the teachers don't like to respond and communicate. A few genuinely care about their students. The campus needs renovating. They charge about $1000 in excess fees. It seems like they only care about getting money out of you. There are always armed robberies and shootings. I'm transferring to an online school and I never wanted to...but it's better than attending here!!

You should visit if you have not visited in years. You would like the changes.

this school is trash everything about it sucks from housing, food, administration etc... It feel like a high school fr all people care about there is going to parties and campus safety is awful as well. Every semester there always a number of armed robberies. All they want is your money go to a better institution.

I am a 62+ student. Over the last three years I have attended Armstrong State University to obtain a degree. I needed one class, College Algebra, to graduate; however, Armstrong did not have what I required until the Summer semester. I took this class at Savannah State, and it was a great experience. Mr. Potier, who is a member of the admissions staff, and Dr. Muche, the instructor, were fantastic. Everyone I came into contact with at Savannah State was extremely helpful. If you are willing to put in the hard work you will receive a great education at Savannah State!

Teshara Laster

I attend Savannah State & I love everything about the campus; the students, the staff, the enviroment... yes, I also had a problem with housing & was in the housing building for 4 hours, I eventually got my housing. This is a school you have to have patience with, I love my HBCU!

To be very honest this school is not for everyone, for me it is not great, but I deal with what I can afford. Price wise it is great, but the benefit of being next to the water does not over come the worst part of the school. The worst part of this school is if you don’t have a full ride, and have everything paid for by a coach or the state, the financial office and everything involving the financial system is just out of order and there is a lot of chaos with the money. The school is good, most of the teachers are great, but I wouldn’t recommend if you don’t have a full ride for college.

I graduated from Savannah St College before it became a univ. My experience there was a good one. I was given the opportunity to learn and succeed but it was up to me to take advantage of those opportunities.

Their Student Records Coordinator is very unprofessional and nasty. In order to receive a copy of your transcript you have to use a service contracted by SSU. I waited nearly 3 weeks to receive my transcript (after contacting the contractor twice), before I was given the number to call the Record Coordinator directly. After leaving a couple of messages, I finally got Latasha Lawton. She seemed angry that I had contacted her directly. She said that they pay the company to do the service and I shouldn't have had to contact her directly. I told her I had contacted them twice and they finally referred me to her, BECAUSE I INSISTED. I explained to her that I had a job hinging on an official transcript, and I really needed it. I also told her that it shouldn't take 10 business days for a transcript to be mailed from one part of Georgia to another part of Georgia. And that I've had to travel to Savannah on 2 separate occasions (the school is 3 hours away) to resolve other issues about getting my transcript for employment and grad school in a timely manner. Ms Lawton reluctantly agreed to send me another copy and stated that "I'll print you out a copy, but I can't control when you'll get it no matter where you are." So very unprofessional and nasty. I truly hope I get my transcript this time. My next call will be to the Registrar and then to the President. Ms. Lawton works for the public and really needs to check her attitude. She is an embarrassment to my alma mater.

The teachers are ok. My main issue is with the Cashiers Office and Financial staff. Financial aid itself is pretty decent, and they at least TRY to help you sort your problems. As far as the Cashiers Office and the Department Heads, terrible. The Cashiers Office doesn’t answer the phone and their rude when you actually do go on campus to speak with them personally. After failing to reach them, we’ve emailed everyone in the department and no one even bothers to email you back. It took a month for me to recieve my refund over the summer and it’s taking a month AGAIN for me to recieve it in the fall. This was after they tried to take $400 from my account thinking I wouldn’t notice by the way. They are unprofessional, have poor time management, and I will be transferring to another school. DO NOT GO HERE!

I visited Savannah when the campus was on summer break. My rating is for the beauty of the campus. The campus has a nice and cozy feeling to it. There is a lot of history captured throughout campus. The fraternity/sorority row is ornately decorated. That part of campus was a great treat.

This school is HIGHLY unprofessional. The staff in financial aid is very rude and insensitive to the affairs of the students. Also, after I applied for housing in May, I still was placed on the waiting list because they 'misplaced' my application. This school is a waste of time and money. TRANSFER to a school where your hard work and dedication is appreciated.

I loved everything about my experience from Savannah State University. I graduated in Dec 2011 with a degree in Criminal Justice and began working in corrections that May. I was part of a very popular modeling group and involved in sports. With any school, it is what you make of it. I transferred there from Virginia Union University and fell in love with it. I Love my SSU. My mother was a graduate and my father attended their as well. #ProudTiger

This elementary school is a joke. Ill let my daughter give the details in her own post but she has had nothing but trouble since she got there so buyer beware. This is not the place for young adults who are serious about getting an education. However, it is a wonderful place for drama queens, hoodrats and wanna be thugs, and I'm not even going to mention the unprofessional faculty and staff. My daughter gets harassed all the time about her light complexion at a predominately black school.Oh no the white kids don't bother her it's the black kids....isn't that funny. And we have the nerve to blame whitey for all our problems. We have learned our lesson and she will be transferring to Kennesaw State next semester. It seems if you want a quality education then you have to go to a school full of whites and asians....and that's a dam shame. If you just have to attend a hbcu then you should probably consider one who is very selective in who they except like Spelman, Morehouse or Xavier. Definitely not this waste of time.

All things considered, I am very much pro-HBCU. I know what they mean to our community and they have immense value. However, when someone calls you to tell you that they're having trouble with something / a problem you don't spend the conversation trying to incite an argument or talking over them. Hear them out, fix their immediate issue if you can and if not (1) let them know or (2) redirect them to who can. I'd really hoped that this behavior had gotten better as time went on (I initially attended 2004-2006). Customer service is actually really simple.

At first I was excited and open to the university but as the days go by the service here declines at an impeccable rate! Mainly being the financial aid office!! Before school starts you must pay your balance off to even start classes or move into housing... then out of no where they add on additional charges without you even realizing it! Then expect you to come out of pocket immediately or they will just drop all your classes and housing, which is UNBELIEVABLE! Never seen a school so disorganized and out of order! Doing something like this to hundreds of student isn't smart nor rational, because once the time comes for everyone to come to the office to pay the "fees" the university will have long waits, fed up students and parents, and inefficient work being done. I'm am just utterly disgusted with how things are being ran here.

I heard over the years how black alumni don't give back. I attended a PWI and have tried repeatedly to donate to HBC to no prevail. Savannah State does not even return my replies. And they wonder why, we integrate. At least the white universities return my calls.

I loved my years at my HBCU, this place is where life started for me. Where I was taught how to take care of myself, no longer depending on my parents, it was and always will be a place that gave birth to my strength.

I graduated in 6 years since I was a double major (electronics and math), but I had a great professional and educational experience. LSAMP and RIMI were two of the research programs I was a member of. These programs gave me the opportunity to conduct research, travel and share my research with students and faculty at other institutions. Currently (June 2016), I attend Iowa State University (a PWI) where I have successfully defended my master's thesis in mechanical engineering. While at SSU, I had my times with financial aid and other departments within the university...so did most of my friends...but we understood that we were adults and couldn't depend on our parents to fight all of OUR wars (especially the ones we started). Long story short, we found jobs and found jobs for our friends and worked hard to graduate. We partied hard and learned from those mistakes, and we P.U.S.H.ed each other. We also saw the decline of some fellow students early on (college is not for everyone). My younger brother was actually a few feet away from one of the gun incidents on campus (he transferred). I won't criticize anyone for bashing SSU, but I will challenge those individuals to offer solutions for the problems they encountered if they really care about SSU and HBCUs in general because it's easy to criticize. I enjoyed my SSU HBCU experience. I made lifelong friends. I met my wife (recently married 6/11/16), and the experience prepared me for the PWI that I'm succeeding in today. I had every opportunity to fail, but I chose to succeed.

I am a freshman at Savannah state university and its alright. They have a lot of events going on so you will never be bored, but the people at Savannah state university don't like to talk. They act like it's high school where they have there own little click. I guess its just me i should probably be more involved, but if you have any events i can join or just talk to people plzzz let me know, but thank you Savannah state university for the college experience!

My parents have been at this school to check my stepbrother in for move in day, been gone since 6 am and it's now 4 pm and they are STILL IN LINE AT THE FINANCIAL AID OFFICE. Soooo unorganized, not professional at all. That was his choice to go to that school.

This university Is a MESS!!!! SAVE yourself the headache and let your kids enroll in another better organized Hbcu. My daughter was placed on the waiting list when she did her housing back in June. Fast forward to July we are told that all FRESHMEN Are GUARANTEED housing. I had to drive my daughter all the way from the Atlanta Area all the way to Savannah which was a four hour trip. We get here they tell us to go to straight housing. We sat in the housing office for almost 12+ hour yesterday and another 12+ hours Today. I ask the staff questions nobody knows anything All the staff is Not on the same page One staff employee says one thing the Other says another The president she does not have her staff under control. This school is just TERRIBLE!!! I wouldn't recommend anyone to come here

You can get anywhere from there...I love the school and the staff.Yes, we had problems there but like any other young adult we tried to solve them the students' way...sit ins and boycotts... I learned alot about myself. I learned to also take care of business before hand and not wait til the very last minute. I never got bullied and never saw anyone get bullied. We were to busy living, going to class and having fun growing up. This is a great HBCU and i recommend it to my kids and their future kids. I was 1st generation.

Honestly it has its ups and downs but that is with any college. When I first came here I felt like I didn't fit in and maybe I didn't belong here. But as the days went by I got out of my room more and met people. That alone transformed how I viewed the school. The campus is nice and the food is pretty good. If you don't like the on campus food, there are plenty of restaraunts outside the gate. Ive come to love the school. Its all about perception

First and foremost, SSU need to realize that the STUDENTS are their customers. You have to really be on top of your stuff at SSU and also you have to be demanding. The only way you will know anything is by learning SSU yourself. READ the policies and handbooks. Customer service here is like going to a McDonalds in the hood. Administration is horrible as well, they are for themselves and the people they pay...NOT the customers. Starting with Student Affairs... Mike Inman has a bad attitude and he talk to students any kind of way. Even if you have not done anything, he will not listen. When you have to appeal to Bonita Bradely, she is equivalent to him. Want to get someone in trouble? Feed a lie to student affairs and watch how they entertain it. That is how poor administration is. The staff in the dining areas are unprofessional and rude. Campus security... I am sure you all have read many FACTS in the news about that. Many of the professors are amazing. Just knowing the professors(and department chair and dean of your path) never having to deal with any office (excluding Garden Hall, scholarships) and living off campus...makes SSU recieve 4 stars. The professors are the ones that help mold the students to greatness.

Someone was shot and stabbed here today and no precaution was taken. A gate is still left unsupervised and people are going in and out all night. This is the main gate foreigners walk on campus from. Don't come here. But if you do, it's an easy school to get into and once you have your GPA and enough credit hours, leave. This school is for one not safe. Two, the financial aid office is awful. They lose documents and are incredibly rude. They also make you pay 3000 for a apartment complex that needs to be redone and there is a gate that is in the back of the school, and is left unsupervised 24 7. People come and go day and nightly and most of the shooters and robbers who come on campus, leave through that gate. Just don't go here.
