REVIEWS OF Southern Connecticut State University IN Connecticut

This school was a 3-star when I was a student back in 2009, but it has improved since then. They've renovated the campus, including the construction of the school of business and the science building. I wish the students were given more useful information about the policies and resources when they first start at the school. As a student, I personally felt that I was blind-sided by problems and issues that were avoidable, if I was more knowledgeable of the polices and procedures early on. I felt that I learned a lot of things after-the-fact. I could have saved a lot of time, money, and stress if I had better mentors or advising.

im usually not the type of person to be negative and leave lengthy reviews but this is so necessary being that im so extremely disappointed with this school! I went for a tour in November of 2017 fell in love with the campus so I decided to apply as a transfer student in April of 2018! I sent in my fee waiver form April 20th I was told it takes 2-3weeks to hear back from the school, ok cool! here it is a MONTH later still no response, nor any communication to even let me know they've received my fee waiver form and that id be hearing from them soon or whatever the case may be just complete silence!!! not to mention the students that answer the phone are very rude and snappy! I withdrew my application and applied to Iona college! I applied with them got an acceptance letter, got my financial situation settled, paid my deposit all within a week, easy as 1,2,3 as it SHOULD be. Its an excellent school with a countless number of awards, i feel as though the process of applying to schools should be as easy and stress free as possible! Im extremely dissatisfied with my experience with this school it literally had everything I was looking for campus wise, but everything happens for a reason and being that Im going into the education field I've been told from numerous amounts of educators that im better off getting a job, with a degree from Iona under my belt. The purpose of this review is not to trash talk or to persuade anyone into not applying here but rather to allow others to be aware of what they may possibly come into contact with when applying to this school and perhaps a change can come about for the next student. : ) Blessings.

I earned my masters degree in English here and am incredibly grateful for my amazing professors. I loved the experience, the challenge, and the community I became a part of and still keep in touch with. Southern changed my entire perspective for the better <3

I love Southern! I'm so proud to be an alumni three times, and a former adjunct! I got my BS and MS at Southern, along with taking the course work for three teacher certifications that I earned. I feel I got an extremely good education from excellent mentors, enriching courses, and hands on experiences.

I absolutely love Southern and New Haven, the university itself has an overwhelming sense of community and belonging. Staff on all levels are kind and welcoming and work tirelessly to ensure the success of all students. On another note New Haven is a phenomenal city, there are great restaurants, nightlife, museums, shopping and on top of it only a short train ride into NYC.

This is pretty much a useless institution, 6 months after graduate school application. No response from them, I am so glad I applied to other schools in Connecticut

Graduating in May and i absolutely loved this school. I ended up graduating early and made lots of friends and had great experiences. This school is a commuter school , so might not be as many on campus activities.

I learnt a lot from this place. Great teachers and very helpful directing me to what classes I needed.

If I could give Southern zero stars I absolutely would. They are extremely unorganized, they don't care about you as a student AT ALL.. They cancelled a BIO class that I really needed a week before classes start. I emailed the head of the department asking for a solution and all I got was a too bad.. Now because of this I have to attend an extra semester and will not be graduating in time.. They offer classes at odd times which makes it hard for you to sign up for classes back to back, so far the professors I had don't care about you and are not understanding.. I graduated from Western Connecticut and I never had a problem with them and now because of Southern I have to spend more of my time and money that I don't have...

Im very disappointed at the fact that my son did not recieve the best communication with his advisor while attending this school, Therefore he has to take another semester before he can graduate. I feel that if the advisors had responded to his Emails in a timely manner he would graduate on time. I have read quite a few reviews basically with students having this same issue or similar issues and I think it really needs to be addressed as to why this is happening. When my child first started here we were excited and was hearing very positive things. Now I suggest that everyone need to step up and pay more attention to what is really going on.

Jorge Taveras

The school provided the educated it needed to give me. Just like anything, you have to put in the efforts to get the most of your investment. Don’t assume people know all of the answers. DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH. Besides that, I received a good education at an affordable price and made some life time friends.

I could sit here and list all the things that are wrong about this school, but others have already done that. I attended for 2 1/2 years between 1999 and 2002. A long time ago, to be sure, but judging by what I've read not much has changed. When I attended, the school was only concerned about their money. Plain and simple. No one there (with the exception of a few notable professors, of course) gave a damn about me. Pay up or you'll be called out of class for bills that are not yet even late. Many (but again, not all) professors will treat you like you're back in kindergarten. Actually, I recall one zoology professor who treated us far worse than that. I believe his words on the first day of class were "You get here on time, or I'll chew you out!" He meant it too. There was no humor in his voice. I was paying the school thousands and thousands of dollars to be yelled at like a dog. During my exit interview, when I was asked why I was choosing to give up on SCSU, I explained my reasons. The man interviewing me (shame I can't remember his name; he seemed like a good guy), exclaimed "It's nothing I haven't heard before." So, word to the wise...listen to the people taking time out of their day to dedicate paragraphs as to why you should never, ever attend this school. I'm glad I escaped you, SCSU. You're a bad, bad place. Thankfully I found a good school and now have an awesome career. Congrats to those who actually enjoy their time there; you definitely have more patience and perseverance than I did.

My daughter is a freshman at SCSU and I have been very impressed with the organization and facilities of the institute. Also, the environment is very welcoming and diverse.

At any school, you make your path by putting effort into finding it. Southern is a great school despite what others say. With all the improvments they are making, within the next year this school will look twice as good as when I started. There is great people who attend this school and there is PLENTY to do if you just think about it for a second. It works for me and it was the best decision I have ever made coming here

I thought going to College was suppose to be great experience. Every year with place it's all about Money. If this is a State College well I pay my taxes and then some so as a tax payer the only thing I would ask for is help with financial aid. Every year they send threatening letters to my niece that she will not be allowed in if they don't get their money by a certain time. Their financial aid department is a joke no compassion for the economic climate we are living in. State School ye right

After the way this school treated me this semester, I will never go back! Classes are 50 minutes on MWF and it you might think thats not bad. OH it sucks, because you can't learn anything in that amount, especially math. Also all the parties here are ratty and ghetto, so if your into that kind of thing along with this school stealing your money and changing your schedule at uncomfortable times with inconsiderate advisers.

I applied here in January and it is now July and still no response. My guidance counselor and I called admissions at least 5 times and they all told us that they misplaced my file in the "other bin" and would get back to me in a weeks time. Still nothing. Thank god I'm going out of state.

If you have the grades to go to a better school, DO IT Worst costumer service ever! They are quick to drop you from classes and ask for money but the second they mess up GOOD LUCK ever having your problems resolved. They don't have any sympathy for students who struggle financially. I feel lost all the time and the staff is rude.

NEVER, I repeat NEVER choose to attend this school. Even if it is your last and final choice, a community college is TWICE as good as this "university." -Staff, ranging from academic to administration, is absolutely abysmal. Complete incompetence on all levels. I am honestly surprised that the adults who work here possess higher than a 9th grade education. The lack of communication between professors, various offices, and last but not least the REGISTRARS office make it nearly IMPOSSIBLE for students to graduate. Many students here take 6+ years to finish undergrad. -Academics are terrible, the professors here could care less about the subjects they teach and the general well being of a student. Student support here is horrible. -Campus life is a terrible experience don't even bother. Over all I HATED transferring to this institution, and I deeply regret all the time and money I have wasted on it. If you are a resident of CT and you are looking at this university, I highly recommend University of New Haven, Yale, Quinnipiac University, Uconn, UHartford, even Gateway Community College or Norwalk Community College. Never come here to this terrible school.

Attended for 3.5 semesters on Federal Grants, paying the difference in cash. I come to find out its school policy to take out loans against attending students. Guess SCSU taught me something.

Southern’s Faculty & Staff truly went the extra mile for me and other students. I received my B.S in Public Health and can honestly say it’s only because of southern’s generosity. I was one semester shy of graduating and had no extra financial resources to remain on campus or pay for my summer internship. They awarded me work study and offered aid to help me get into a place close to campus that I could afford. I love this school, my only regret is not attending several years ago when I first wanted to. I know faculty from my major had a lot to do with my experience here. If granted the chance, I’d love to teach here in the future :)

Although my professors have been awesome, the university as a whole is horribly disorganized and mismanaged. The various staff of different departments are uniformly rude and uninformed. I've gotten wrong and/or misleading information on basic protocol literally EVERY SINGLE TIME I've spoken with someone (where do I submit work study requests? Can I still carry student insurance if I'm part-time?) Regarding the insurance, I was told "yes" by 2 different pople. HOWEVER, the answer to that is it's automatically cancelled when you register online for classes and it is received as part-time, so then you have to re-enroll as a new client at a higher rate. I found this out when I was trying to fill a prescription and after much investigation found out that my insurance had been cancelled. This is one of the MANY problems I've experienced with Southern administration. Equally as faulty, is the technology "services" that Southern uses. Windows 7 computers in the computer labs that take (no joke) 5-20 mins to log you on if there are more than 3 people in the room and remote printing that requires an installation on your laptop every time you want to use it. This is recommend since you'll otherwise sit for 20 mins for the lab computer to log on and then progress to opening and printing a file at the speed of dial-up. If you need to reach anyone (computing services, the bookstore) for questions, you'll be strained to find contact info outside of the (203)392-SCSU main office number. A detailed Google search rarely finds the phone numbers associated with specific offices. Most recently, for the past month as Southern has started the fall semester, their network has become so overloaded that the mail server periodically un-syncs all of my devices from their email (iPhone, Mac) so I don't get mail or know that an email I sent never actually sent, since it doesn't appear in ANY outbox or draft folder from any device. But since it happens off-and-on, as the SCSU network comes and goes as it pleases, I've not known about the missed emails until someone tells about a group email I missed. Lastly, and kinda most importantly, Southern's crap internet system occasionally doesn't recognize my password for Bannerweb, email, and Blackboard. Confoundingly, this doesn't occur on these applications all in one sitting. MANY TIMES I've sat and typed my password into Blackboard 5+ times and magically after repeated entries it suddenly works!!! Always had the same problem logging into "myscsu" and trying to get my email back online to the Southern server. Recommendation: If you're enrolling as a full-time undergraduate, I would HIGHLY recommend looking for a school elsewhere because you're DEFINITELY not getting your money's worth at this institution. Note: they also have no funding for student work study anymore, so don't count on that for extra money/tuition expenses. If you're taking classes part-time, for a job or continuing education, it will be a frustrating experience, but not a total waste of money. Botton line, I rated 2 stars because the professors and experiences with classmates have been awesome this past year, but the university as a whole is beyond frustrating.
