I went to UAA many years ago, as did my brother and my stepfather. We all went on to attend either medical school or law school following graduation. After taking summer classes at UAA, I decided to transfer in from a UC university (where my classes were 500+). I transferred partly because of the lower tuition (UC school=out of state tuition) and partly because I really enjoyed my summer classes at UAA. What I remember liking about UAA was getting to know my professors. They were very interested in teaching and were personable and friendly. I loved pretty much all of my classes. I took advantage of other opportunities offered by the university as well. I participated in the outdoor program where I learned to climb mountains, rock and ice. I worked at the bookstore and tutored for extra money. I enrolled in a research lab and also went to UAF for a summer research internship. There is no reason you cannot achieve your goals following graduation from UAA, provided you work hard and take advantage of the opportunities it offers. I went on to medical school after graduating from UAA. Two of my close classmates went on to law school and medical school. Following graduation, my stepfather went to an IVY League law school and my brother went to law school on a scholarship (and graduated top of his law class).

Inept institution. I had applied and deferred by application fee. Ultimately did not attend since their STEM program was lacking compared to most other colleges and just received a letter demanding immediate repayment of the fee. I'm happy to pay what's due. I called their office for payment. No answer - closed. I have no information on my accounts with them, nonexistant since I am not attending this college, so I cannot pay them online. I called again to ask about how to get an account to pay. No answer. I travel ALL THE WAY FROM KENAI, mind you, to go talk with them in person to sort it out since they will not answer their phones. I go to the student union building and am directed to the university center since that is where they have their billing... Closed again. I have my card at the ready but they are unwilling or unable to accept my money. I finally call the main school phone and talk with the operator and he says they are having an appreciation/training day. They are unwilling to accept payment, which I am more than willing to provide as I did apply and understand there was a fee. However, a year after I apply out of the blue they sent me this letter demanding payment or they would claim my PFD. Unacceptable. Inept institution there is no wonder why their budget is being slashed. What a racket. Side note: Campus looks very new, nice and renovated. However, it's pretty sprawled out and confusing from an outsider perspective. Not happy with them and am voicing concern for prospective students. Their monetary practices seem to be unethical.

I'm a student here at UAA and the internet here is god awful. It makes doing online assignments take much longer than they really need to take. Netflix, youtube, and other streaming services also get frustratingly hard to use because of it. They said they would fix it at the beginning of the year, but ended up just removing the only viable option for better internet. Also it's cold AF here. UAF might be a better option in all honesty

Good and cheap college depending on what you're majoring in, but the one thing it lacks is a unified campus feeling. Everything is spread out and there isn't much college spirit.

I'm going through the UAA representative on base to get a math class started. After registering for it I am told that I need a degree plan for me to be able to take the class. So this being my first time ever taking a physical college class I believe that I'm not fully enrolled in this class just projected to join. I later decide that I don't want to go through UAA since I will be leaving soon and don't want to pursue an online education through them. I stop all attempts to get a degree plan and think that I'm all clear. Well I'm still technically taking the class, not once was I notified about anything to do with that class through any medium. I get an email saying I owe $694, they don't even tell me what for, which I dismiss as some spam or something. Next time better educate your representatives to give accurate, clear information to likely first time college goers. Also a "1 week no work turn in drop out" policy would be awesome so future people avoid my situation. This school sucks, don't attend here, they don't care about students obviously, not somewhere you want to dump 100,000 for an education knowing that this institution is getting that money instead of a university worthy of it.

A really small facility with nothing much to offer compared to other universities in the lower 48. If Alaska really doesn't want it's young citizens to move away because of education, then this university needs to provide more. More in sports and most importantly more in education.

it is absolutely out of this world

Much better university choices out there. UAA has been cutting programs and convoluting the whole process with litle to no benefit to students. Want to do something in the science field, run form this place. Still highly rated in nursing. UAA has been working with UAF and UAS to try and standardize, which has caused some troubles, but fixed others. Meaning that the University of Alaska system should actually accept transferring much easier for those who merely change within the state. Albeit it still a nightmare to transfer outside. Make a better choice and don't end up here regretting what you've done.

Been to two Division I schools, this one matches up. Aside from some growing pains (and this school is growing very quickly) this is a great place to learn. Good atmosphere, good location, low tuition prices.

I think it's funny how everyone is complaining about how this college "nickels and dimes" you. $40k a year is NOTHING compared to the other universities I looked into. In the lower 48, $40k might get you one semester if you're lucky.

Marco Johnson

All they seem to care about is money, though there are some people that care, for the large part you’re met with shrugs and a “there’s nothing I can do” attitude, especially when it comes to parking services.

Frankie Vang

Wish it was more of an actual University instead of a community college like feel. Kind of getting more expensive when it probably doesn’t need to. Overall it’s ok but definitely if you can go somewhere else you should.

Jinwoo Nam

Kris Hayzel

Would rate a 0 if I could! This school should lose all federal funding!

Sage Revels

absolutely the worst college I've been to. Parking is a joke even after paying for an expensive parking pass, still cant park during certain times in the day or if you're there too long you get fines all the time. I was told by the advisor for business that I shouldn't go to college because she didn't believe I was smart enough for college because I failed the first year. After writing a letter for approval explaining that my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer is the reason I failed the first year of college, she said she would accept me for the business degree but didn't even apologize for her attitude. I declined UAA for the second year and went to ALASKA PACIFIC UNIVERSITY. Where I currently got my associates in Accounting with a 3.0 GPA, and love the teachers I've had so far and my advisor keeps up to date with me and helps me every semester choosing classes. DONT GO TO UAA UNLESS NURSING OR ENGINEERING because that's apparently all they care about if you haven't seen the spending they use for those specific degrees only.

David Chuckran

After reading all the negative reviews mostly from people who don't attend UAA I feel the need to write something. I am a UAA alumni and I'm really glad I went to this university. I learned so many useful life skills and gained many new perspectives and ways of thinking. Most of my teachers were great and and I can only remember like 3 I didn't like. The culinary program is top notch and constantly improving. In fact many people don't know there is a student lab restaurant called on Lucy's on campus with delicious food. And for the reviews from people offended by an Art professor making an expression about the President perhaps a more pro Trump college like Liberty University would suit you better.

The campus is very diverse. You will meet people from all over Alaska and all-over the world. If you are a freshman I would suggest staying in the dorms because you need support, stability and help finding your way around campus. DON'T BE SHY TO ASK QUESTIONS. Faculty staff are all helpful.

Great school. Instructors are well educated and friendly. There's almost always something to do. Classes are pretty difficult, not much mercy from most instructors. Good school to attend for almost any major.

If you're a working adult and want to take classes then have a look at night classes at the University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA). If you're out of high school and plan to live with friends or your parents then you can't beat the convenience of a local campus. Online classes aren't for everyone, so consider UAA for the traditional higher education experience. I wish the University Center was located on main campus, but space is an issue around UAA. Checkout the new buildings on campus and some of the upgrades to the older buildings. During the summer this campus looks beautiful with all the flowers. Sadly finding food on campus is nearly impossible, so bring your lunch and relax at one of the many picnic tables. If this review was helpful please click the Like button.

Worst University Ever! All it cares about is money. Nickels and dimes you for everything. They make you take unnecessary classes. Parking pass cost 250 per car for 1 year and you can't even park in the parking garage. A lot of the parking spots aren't even available. Makes you pay for the uaa bus transportation which is included in your "fees" even though you have already paid for a parking pass.

David Kilpatrick

To Alina Crow & the other malcontents. Obtaining an education is expensive. Ask your parents what amount of taxes they paid so you could complain about UAA. I worked full time to get my AA degree in ten years. I am not quite sure your expectations of costs toward an education? May be that you did get an education?

I am currently in my fourth year at UAA for my Bachelors in Biology and Minor in Mathematics. The entire time I have been at UAA, I have met MAYBE two professors that enjoy teaching students and seeing those students grow. UAA is a very selfish university in the sense that they do things for money in return. Parking permits are outrageous and the fee for parking without a permit is $15 MORE than the fee of downtown Anchorage parking tickets! Tuition is equivalent to many out of state tuition, books and supplies cost an arm and a leg and most books they create a new version by the next semester so "book buyback" rarely applies to any of your most expensive books. If you are looking for a university worth your time and money, I would advise against UAA. Submitting concerns and complaints to the school itself goes nowhere. If you have a third-party scholarship, good luck on getting it from UAA in a timely matter! UAA holds scholarships right up until the very last second that they legally can hold a scholarship. I hope to finish my degree and be done with UAA.

I had taken a few good classes from here. I have to give it bad marks for its location. Additionally, the parking is the worst of any college campus I have seen out of the many college campuses I've been to regardless of whether the college was located in the city, suburbs or country. You get 2 stars.
