Just returned from Peru and Machu Picchu trip with A & R. Let me start by saying the people of Peru are so warm and friendly. The Belmond hotels were spectacular and the food wonderful. Would have preferred to stay in Lima since that was where the action was rather than a suburb. We took the General Tours trip to Vietnam and it was a 9 out of 10. This would be a 3 or 4 out of 10. Machu Picchu was definitely a highlight; however it was pretty much of the same thing; cathedrals, driving and ruins, except for the art studio where we were able to visit and paint tiles. Staying in these fabulous hotels was great; however, you would finish a tour at 4:30-5:00 p.m. and be picked up at 7:00 a.m. with no time to enjoy the facilities. The Amazon 3-day was plenty. It seemed like they were trying to fill the time. A highlight was a visit to San Francisco Village on the Amazon. Peru is noted for culinary restaurants. I would suggest taking a ceviche class, visit a coffee producer and tour the kitchen of the city's top restaurants. There was only one other couple touring with us, and they were delightful. The guides were outstanding.

My wife and I booked an Icelandic tour with Alexander+Roberts a year in advance. It was to arrive on June 21st, the longest day of the year, but was cancelled three months prior to departure because they were unable to book six travelers. They ruined our summer travel plans as all reputable tour companies were already fully booked. Does Alexander+Roberts only cater to vampires?

We booked our first trip with A&R a year ago. I had fallen in love with their Safari itinerary (Kenya/Tanzania) plus the Gorilla Trek add on so we saved our money and booked with this high end travel agent. Let me say the hotels, guides and some of the safari vehicles were excellent. We did run into some issues however. (1) Our itinerary was missing for our flight from Nairobi to Kigali. Our paperwork told us our airline tickets would be delivered to us in Kenya, nothing came. We had to wait at the entrance to the airport terminal for A&R's local ground agent to run across the parking lot with our itinerary. This document was produced 3 weeks prior to our departure so it's puzzling why they could not scan and email prior to our departure. (2) Itineraries are misleading and outdated. Animals we were expecting to see in Lake Manyara no longer existed, and had not for at least 8-9 years. (3) My husband and i were missing from the Tanzania portion of the traveler list, they had no record of our outbound flight information when we crossed the border. We ended up solving this with our local tour manager and he personally drove us to the airport in time for our outbound flight (4) We booked this trip with an American agency, we live in Canada. When I followed up for our final paperwork package, I was told they could not ship my documents as I lived in Canada. GRR I just dropped $30K USD with this company and they can't send me the paperwork via FEDEX? (5) No personal call a week, or two prior to our departure to make sure we were all set. All communication was in the form of email - no personal interaction at all. I escalated to A&R's Concierge when I returned home, she said wow, I'll get back to you, it's now 2 weeks and still no feedback on my concerns. I will not book with A&R again. We did have a great time, met some great people, and loved the hotels. However, in future, I'll deal with local travel agents (Primitive Safari's in Rwanda) and Sense of Africa, or another African safari operator should we chose to return.

I struggled with this review as the tours and guides were great. Our agent however, didn't meet expectations and was not always responsive.

I have used Alexander and Roberts on more than one occasion and will say that things work like clockwork. Their greeters are always on time and friendly and very accommodating. I jut returned from their India trip and the trip went beyond expectation. The pricing on their trips are extremely reasonable with the highest level of hotels and transportation. I have recommended them to several friends.
