REVIEWS OF Earthquake Lake Visitor Center IN Montana

Beautiful facility, very comfortable, with lots of historical information about the extremely dramatic way the lake was formed in 1959. The trails are short and very well maintained with several things to look at. GREAT STOP FOR KIDS TO RUN AROUND! Views in every direction are spectacular! The most interesting thing we saw was the 3000 ton boulder that flew across the river valley and landed on a tent with two campers. Their bodies were never retrieved. The stone was left on top of them as a marker to remember the 28 people who died as a result of the event that created the lake in 1959, 60 years ago as of this posting.

Amazing place to witness the power of an earthquake. Just outside Yellowstone Park toward Ennis Montana. Well worth the deviation.

Marty Griffin

The devastating earthquake that happened at Hebgen Lake on August 17, 1959 cost 29 lives. The visitor center provides great information on the event and it's aftermath, definitely worth visiting.

Edward Wink

This is a super clean Visitor Center that you just didn't know about unless you passed it.

If you want a break from the crowds in Yellowstone, head east to Quake Lake. The scenery is beautiful and the traffic and crowds are nonexistent in comparison to Yellowstone. The visitors center there provides an interesting perspective on the formation of Quake Lake and the history of the area

This is one of the smaller Visitor Centers, but it is thorough and well done, and the disaster is handled with compassion. I was here the day this happened, but we left about 12 hours before the earthquake happened. Very sobering.

Linda Meuret

I was a four-year-old little girl the night that the earthquake hit the West Yellowstone area. I remember the shaking of our trailer as I was in my bunk bed. It is amazing the size of the landslide that produced earthquake Lake. It's sobering also and the loss of life of those campers who were caught underneath it. The stories of the survivors are poignant and heartfelt. It was a night of terror for them. The visitors center is very nicely done and has beautiful views. It is worth the hike to the top of the landslide to the 2 big boulders that had the memorial plaque on it with the names of those who perished on it. It was quite an engineering feat to cut the way through the landslide and rocks and dirt to allow the water from the Lake to drain back then.

You've probably never heard of this earthquake that killed campers in the middle of the night and formed a new lake. The hike is short but a bit tricky - the path is shale, son watch your footing.

This is a great place to visit if you are in the area. The educational center and interpretive video tell about an incredible event that reshaped the area and how it affected people's lives. We were especially grateful the restrooms were very clean. The hiking trails were a great option to stretch our legs.

Awesome lake! A lot of fun to explore in a kayak or on a paddleboard.

Nice Historical Park. They had a video presentation there of the Damage Done by the landslide. Kind of sad to know that some people died there but when you are there you will see what the terrain looks like and how easy landslides can happen. Mother Nature is very unforgiving sometimes.

Casandra Hylton

Huge lake with beautiful views!

Davin Garlick

What a hidden gem! My kids, 5, 8 and 11 loved it. The visitors center has a short movie that plays every half hour. It is worth stopping. There are also a couple of short hikes you can do that are fun.

This is an awesome spot. I was driving through from Idaho when I happened upon this scene of Nature's past fury. Known as the Hebgen Lake earthquake, it triggered the collapse of a large part of one mountain into the valley and up the other side. Commemorative plaques explain the event - well worth a stop.

Very interesting. Truly amazing how that 7.5 earthquake in 1959 caused the big brown Madison Slide.

Lea Bucknell

It looks small on the outside, but it isn't. Definitely worth a look, especially the 20min video. A great place to take a rest, go to the bathroom, and let the kids stretch their legs...while learning:)

The Rangers on staff were great! I wish there was a way to listen to the stories rather than read them, as several people reading them at one time doesn't work very well, but the movie was terrific. The experience and education we received was great. Highly recommended for adults and teens.

Quake lake was formed by the landslide that occurred 20 seconds into the 7.5 earthquake in August of 1959. A hugh part of the mountain opposite the visitor center broke off and slid across the Madison River generating winds of 100 miles per hour in the canyon and completely stopping the river's flow. It is well worth the time to go into the Visitor Center to see the view of the slide and the lake and to understand this event through their video and exhibits. This was the 4th largest earthquake ever in the United States and 28 lives were lost. Beautiful drive into the area.
