Very nice place with very helpful employees.
It's gone and closed
A nice attraction and a great Danish market for specialty food from Denmark along with alcohol.
Unique place
Great place
A fun place to visit during festival times, Jule Fest, Tivoli. Currently under some renovations.
Fun roadside things to see
We stopped here in the morning, after we broke down our campsite, in order to check out the museum and grab breakfast. Unfortunately, we stopped on Sunday morning and they weren't open yet. We weren't able to check out the museum but were able to walk around the grounds. This is a really neat place to visit if one is interested in history and culture. It provides historical information on Danish cultures and the Vikings of old. We walked around the structures and read all the signs. Fun place to stop... we will definitely be coming back next time we drive through here in order to check out the museum.
I enjoyed browsing the local shop while taking in a great view.
Great place to visit
Great place to shop.
This place is a must see
Very unique items available & friendly service.
The windmill is in pieces. Not worth the stop. Very disappointing with how much advertisement there is for it along the way
Off the beaten path, there is a town obsessed with the Danish. The windmill is large and impressive. That said, there isnt much else. I may have been there just in the off season but I could only find one restaurant that was opened roughly 4 hours a day. Lastly, no gas. If you do make the trip, there's also a beautiful church just down the road worth beholding.
Very interesting
Very interesting place. Stopped just to use the restroom which were very clean and discovered this. We watched a 15 minute video about the windmill and got a tour of the inside. It was really great and super cheap!! Have told others about this place. It also has plenty of parking and a gift shop. It was a nice place to stop and get out and walk around
A little disappointed the windmill is down. Still a really neat place to visit.
This is a neat place to visit, especially if you have Danish heritage. The windmill is well kept, and the gift store has some very unusual items-- a great place to come Christmas shopping if you want to find something unusual and Scandinavian-cool that you will be remembered for.
Very cool place right off of I-80. Stop if you get the chance.
Lots of great travel gifts n trinkets to take home.
Visit Denmark without a passport! Cool place located 20mins north of I-80. Worth a stop if you passing by. Elk Horn is also a very quaint place worth having a walk in. I loved its Danish style & the mill too. Tiny museum and shop located nearby. Parking spots available on location. Have fun!
Enjoyed walking around , we got there after it had closed but could still walk around and get some great photo's.
Nice little break along I-80, and we aren't even Danish. Did the tour and got to climb the windmill. Even picked up some rye flour and a Kringle.
We visit on Sunday drives, the windmill is now open for tours!
Fun, cool gift shop. Interesting history.
May not have stopped had we known that the windmill was in disrepair. It appears to have been that way for a couple of months at least. Museum is very small. Gift store prices were much too high. There were a couple of other displays to see. Enjoyed the woodworker's shop next door... some refinished items and some new crafts for very good prices. Very pleased with the handmade birdhouse I picked up there.
an original danish windmill from denmark :)
This was a happy accident if there ever was one. I had not expected to leave the highway, but needed to find somewhere to give the car a rest and stretch my legs. At the very least, it was a nice change from the usual scenery along the interstate. The person staffing the gift shop was very helpful and informative. Thanks for making my trip through Iowa a memorable experience!
Fun once the windmill is accessible. It wasn't when we went.
Interesting.
Wonderful family who runs the mill and shop currently. The windmill is awesome to see in person and the little Viking house that's next to the windmill is really cool. I don't think the $3 for the tour is worth it. The tour is a 15 minute video and then you walk around the inside of the mill unguided. Other then the tour, the experience was overall great!
A nice place for authentic Danish goods. Informative shopkeeper, and very inexpensive tours of the windmill.
Love this small town attraction. It was very interesting to hear about how the windmi came about. It's a nice little detour from the interstate. It includes a gift shop. You can also your the upper part of the windmill. The staff is friendly. It a great photo op with friends. There's a miniature inside to get a closer look.
The staff was very nice and knowledgeable! It is a very cute shop with snacks, souvenirs, and nice, clean bathrooms. We did not stay long enough for the whole tour, but the area around the shop is beautiful, plus there's enough walking path to let you stretch if you're just passing through! We were very excited to be able to buy some art and a Danish mug, we hope to stop by again the next time we pass through to pick up more!
Clean. Lots of nice Denmark made mementos for sale. Friendly to strangers? Not so sure.
Stopped there on our way to Utah, it was nice and quite a cool thing for the kids to see and they had a great time i picked up a thors hammer necklace while there ..
Not as what we expected, but they have great array of souvenirs and blue porcelains
It was a lovely excursion
Fun tour
We spent the last 3 years living in Denmark so when we saw signs in the interstate for Danish villages we had to stop. The gift shop had a lot of Danish goods that we're so.much fun for the kids and I to look at and remember fondly.
This is a great shop, they even carry Danish foods and sundries
Good food and great service! :-)
Quaint town, great people, worth a visit.
Nice stop! Be sure to take the tour of the windmill.
Very interesting and unique.
Host was knowledgeable and helpful. Souvenir items are a little pricey
Nice piece of history.
Enjoyable stop.
I found out that the Windmill is almost reassembled, Awesome.
Elk Horn is definitely worth a short detour from I-80! The windmill is being repaired but there are many other attractions in the area. I love the small town feel, everyone knowing each other but still very warm and inviting to visitors. Several small businesses offer appealing goods, from Danish wine to pastries.
Pretty standard little shop with all things Danish. Didn't really know what Danish stuff was until I came here so that's a plus! The windmill is the big selling point and as long as you get your pic outside, you're good!
This place holds so many memories for me. My great grandpa Jacobsen helped in the project that brought this majestic windmill to Elk Horn. No matter how many times I visit, I will always be thrilled to see it again.
Very interesting piece of local history
Saw a sign during my road trip and being Danish I knew I needed to stop and check this place out. Best decision. Amazing stop and would love to visit again.
A nice place to visit. A small community Danish descendents who are proud of their heritage, friendly, and willing to share stories about what life is like in Elk Horn . We spent a few hours and enjoyed every minute.
So friendly and fun!
Most of the exhibit was closed for a remodel.
Fun pit stop!
really nice
Very nice place to visit!
I was privileged to have been there when the new sails arrived. I am looking forward to stopping by to see the progress they have made on my next trip. It is a great place to visit.
15 minutes video about the mill tranfer from Nørre Snede DK to Elk horn and a tiny tour inside the mill and a very nice touristy shop right next door. Would recommend - and get your lunch at the Coffeegirl across the street!
Cute little museum and store which also includes a Welcome Center. It is 6 miles from I80.
I wish it hadn't been closed to renovations
Wine was great! Knowledge and descriptions of wines lacking.
Interesting. Nice gift shop.
Shop was closed when we got here but had to stop for some photos. Great windmill a must see if in the area.
It’s just like a real Danish windmill. Fun experience
Great place to visit
I would not suggest leaving I -80 to see it.
Such a good cultural experience, impressive engineering, and great story.
Love this place. Very courteous, knowledgeable, and friendly. Definitely worth a visit.
Lots of great stuff and Viking Blod mead!
Stopped here on the way to Illinois from Nebraska. Great stop, nice small shops near by, This place introduced us to Glogg which is now a yule tradition for us to have a hot cup of during family gatherings. Definitely visiting again!
Place was fantastic
A must see windmill. 1800 area flower mill / windmill from Denmark
Cute little side stop. Pictures and souvenirs
FASCINATING did buy a couple of things!
Very pretty
Cool place worth the detour!
Windmill from Denmark. Interesting if you're into that kind of thing.
It was small and different. Very Amish focused. It was clean and quaint though.
I Highly recommend to stop by if you are a traveler, very nice place to take your pictures and get out of the routine.
Cell service in this town is abysmal. The windmill is worth a look if you need a break.
Very small "museum", hours posted weren't accurate. Closed at 5pm on a weekday in the Summer
Unknown treasure
Amazing place to visit!!
This gift shop and windmill sight on the Great Plains was a real find! What a variety of gift items from Holland!
The place was pleasant and is set in a perfect rural scenery. A short drive of about 5min from the I-80 took us here and we did not regret taking the pit stop at all. Although we did not take the tour as we were tight on schedule, I managed to click few photographs along the way and of the windmill itself. There is also a museum nearby about Danish people. I did not know anything about the windmill until I read the review on the travel blog linked in google; but will definitely recommend it to anyone travelling along the route.
It's historic. Windmill blades were missing. Does have a charging station for 2 electric cars. And plenty of parking.
Every want to see the inside of an actual Danish windmill. Here you can actually see the inner working of it. I learned quite a but about ut today.
Sadly the windmill is closed due to restoration construction. No idea when it will reopen but gift shop is still open
Unique welcome center
Awesome and outstanding. Love this place.
Loved it
Very nice people
It makes really good wind.
Neat piece of history in the middle of Elkhorn, IA. Would recommend visiting in the spring or fall since its not climate controlled and very hot in the summer and freezing cold in the winter.
Love this place. Recently learned about it, and we will be visiting again! Hygge has new meaning for me. Started planning for Tivolifest.
It's a cool place to just drive to.
Nice place. It will be better when they finish repairs
If you haven't visited, you are missing out. If you live near by and haven't visited, are you really a true local?! I love the gift shop, Danish food selection, Danish spirits and Scandinavian novelty products along with their modern gifts!!
Fascinating engineering.
15 min video, self guided tour for $3. Very interesting and enjoyable. We had a good time and got some great pics. Gift shop was nice. They have fresh raspberry-almond kringle pastries that were absolutely delicious!
Nice place, small gift shop.
Nice to see maintenance being cared for. Sorry we couldn't go in.
This Danish vestige of an earlier era is truly a must see wonder.
Check out the Danish workshop across the street for cool handmade wooden items and furniture repairs.
Interesting place to visit. Excellent opportunity to get inside of a windmill. learn how they're built and why they were built.
My home TOWN-ELK HORN, IA
A bit further than anticipated off the highway, but it was really cool to see and the staff was incredible friendly!
Always fun to see what's new!
The pretty view of the windmill is blocked by the visitor building. They make you watch a video to start the tour too
The Danish Windmill at Elkhorn, Iowa is a great way to experience some Danish culture without leaving the country!
Nice store with everything Danish. I had some marzipan that was delicious.
A very relaxing park.
The windmill is currently dismantled, I'm sure will be a lot better once the repairs are completed. The video part of the tour was extremely outdated.
Friendly and super interesting!! The highlight of our trip!
Pretty cool story in the middle of nowhere
Very charming place to visit!
Where else are you going to see one of these?
Neat windmill about 6 miles north of interstate 80. Big gift shop and out builings
Neat history. Will be nice when they get it rebuilt. They do need to go sweep all the dead flies out of there. But overall very cool place.
Was being repaired when we went.
This is my childhood. It hasn't changed much, which is good.
This is a fun bit of history.
Bought some Kringle from the gift shop awhile back. It turned out to be so dry that it was not edible. My mistake for not noticing. Lesson learned not to buy food from tourist gift shops anymore.
The windmill is in restoration. They mentioned the blades should be installed in the Fall of 2018. A great history for the town pulling together to purchase and ship the windmill from Denmark to Elk Horn, Iowa. The mill area is small, still interesting to see. Has a nice gift shop, which I bought a few items for keepsakes. There was a Danish museum in town, but I didn't stop and visit it.
Nice tourist trap
Cute but it was closed
Very cool place a lot of knick knacks reasonably priced employees very nice
Would have been nice if there was a sign saying the windmill was being worked on. Got all the way there and was super disappointed that the blades were not even attached to the windmill.
Great day trip for exploring some history of Iowa and it's roots.
Nice shop and good presentation.
Very cool place to stop. Our kids thought it was cool to go in the windmill. It was in repair while we were there and was still cool.
Very interesting, awesome history. In the process of refurbishing.
A piece of Danish history. The windmill is worth a stop to check out the long and interesting story of how it left Denmark and came to Iowa. Check out the very large Scandinavian gift shop and talk to the people there. It's a favorite ace for me.
Interesting place to stop at.
It was okay, a long drive to see a windmill
Super fun and more than a little quirky
Nice old lady running it educated us on history very good educational
Very cool place to visit. Kids really enjoyed.
Loved this trip and this place was fun
Great Danish heritage experience!
A great place for history
Impressive
Could not tour due to remodel; however, gift shop browsing was fun.
It was a neat place to stop by. Free to walk around. Has a short walk with a history of the windmill and Vikings.
Tucked away in the hills of Elk Horn, Iowa is a piece of heritage. Not a stuffed or still things that is only to be admirred for the life it had, but a living legacy to resourcefulness and inovation. Not only can you take in it stunning color on the outside, but you are invited to glimpse its inner workings. Come in and shop its many authentic Danish items and even take home a bag of stone ground flour. It is well worth the trip.
Fun tour but windmill was under renovation during my visit.
Saw a sign of the freeway, so ventured that direction. Nothing was open when we arrived, my last 2 stars are usually based on customer service. So couldnt really rate that. It was cool to see, however not complete. Looks like they are still assembling it. So ill drive by again in a few years and see if my opinion changes. Not far off the freeway so take a moment to stretch your legs and check it out.
Cool historical place to visit
We exited the interstate for the welcome center and had to drive SIX miles. When we arrived it was closed despite the permanently mounted "open" flag. Very frustrating.
Gift shop and small park.
Great place to visit and nice gift shop
Very unique
A bit far off the highway but people are very friendly.
