Thanks for arranging our trip to Paris, Brittany and Normandy. Like all travelers, we did have some minor “problems” but I want you to understand that we were 95% satisfied.
The week in Paris was great. The hotel was very well situated – we walked everywhere. The room was lovely, the staff very helpful and the breakfast far more than adequate.
Despite the train strike, we made it to Rennes and got our car. The only vehicle they had available, was not appropriate. It was a nine passenger Mercedes van that was long, wide and difficult to maneuver. But we took it and managed.
Brittany was beautiful and the weather was perfect. The Chateau De Locguenole was very handsome and located on amazing grounds. The staff was friendly and our room comfortable and huge. We were not happy that the only breakfast available was 21 Euros per person (about $25), and that there was no nearby alternative. Instant coffee and an electric kettle were provided in the room.
Les Maisons de Bricourt was also charming with a pleasant staff and lovely grounds. It was well located for our visits to various places. Again, breakfast was 21 Euros, no alternative, no coffee in the room.
Chateau de Sully, close to Bayeux, was less pleasant. The room was ordinary. The staff was “brisk,” to put it nicely. The woman who showed us to our room let an outside door close in Michael’s face. The shower was nearly impossible to work and the man who came to show us how to use it was rude. 21 Euro breakfast again. Nespresso machine and two caffeinated coffee capsules provided per day. We requested a third capsule (because one of those provided had failed to produce a cup of coffee) and were charged 2 Euros for it, which seemed mean spirited to us. I would not recommend this place to any travelers.
The return trip to Paris by train was fine. But the driver who drove us from the Gare St. Lazare to the airport didn’t realize there were two Mercure hotels and dropped us at the wrong one. This resulted in a 15 Euro cab trip to the correct hotel. It was just what you would expect from an airport hotel, comfortable and convenient.
Aside from the above small problems, we had a wonderful trip. However, we didn’t realize that one of the main reasons for staying in these chateaux is to dine at the Michelin rated restaurants. We did not take advantage of this as the meals were upwards of $100 per person, fixed price, no alternatives. At the Bricourt we were able to order beverages for our room. Less fancy hotels within towns would probably have suited us better.
