Just spent 5 days at The Big Thompson Pool cabin, Oct. 10th-15th, 2017. 3 adults and 3 young adults ages 18-20. We had a wonderful time. We enjoyed the sauna, jacuzzi, pool table, fire pit and the guitar with a binder of chords and chord music. The sonos app was a hit! The younger adults could jam downstairs, playing pool while us adults were upstairs watching a movie. We loved the app because you can play music in all rooms or just one or two and even outside when you like. The cabin is stocked very well with every kitchen item you can think of. Tons of towels and extra blankets as well. I was surprised that two of us that had Iphones were able to facetime with friends while at the cabin and also able to text and receive texts at times. The first morning there we enjoyed watching the Bighorn sheep just up the mountain side behind the cabin while we had our morning coffee. We hiked that mountain later that afternoon and my son made it all the way to the top while the rest of us only half the way. Definitely, a work out!! We were very concerned about the road closure on 34 between Estes and Loveland. However, it ended up not being a big deal with a little planning in advance. We made sure that we booked our flight early enough to arrive at Denver International Airport get our rental car and groceries so we could make it into loveland before road closed at 7 pm. We thought we would have to book 48 hours in advance to get a pilot car to take us from cabin into Estes Park on 43 when the roads were closed but that was not the case at all we could go to Estes Park and then into Rocky Mountain National Park anytime we pleased. Clare's cabin is just up the road on the right about a 1/4 mile from 43 which takes you into Estes. So, we just jumped in the car and drove down to 43 and the workers would let us through. We never had to wait more than 3 minutes. I was very glad however, that we did get a rental car with GPS navigation system because there is no cell service in the canyon. The GPS allowed us to find places in Estes and Rocky Mountain National Park with ease which otherwise we would not had been able to do on our phone. So, definitely, keep that in mind especially if you are not familiar with the area. We left on Sunday and were able to stay till our check out time at 10 because on Sunday they had pilot cars running every 15 mins on 34 to and from Loveland which was nice because we got to sleep in a bit. I never met Clare or her hubby but spoke on the phone many times with Clare. She was very sweet and answered the millions of questions I had about the road closure. Clare, does have a land line at the cabin where you can receive calls and call out anywhere in the U.S. for free. So, if you need to book stuff in Estes it's not a problem. The only thing I regret, is that we didn't stay longer!!!
