We stayed here with friends and couldn't have been happier. Great location and really cool atmosphere. Rooms were really nice too. We booked a room with the view of the city and given the view of a parking garage so that was disappointing but beisdes that it was nice.
Was good, not great. Was disappointed to learn that the archdiocese painted over woodwork and wallpaper. The restoration looks well done.
Wonderful piece of history. Carole was a great tour guide!
Magnificent. A slice of American history
Extensive tour with knowledge staff. The house restoration is 90% complete. Whether you like old mansions or have a passion for Captain Pabst's history, this is a great tour.
I took the 1 hour museum tour and it was amazing! The mansion is beautiful and the tour was very informative. I would definitely recommend coming here if you are in Milwaukee.
Home to milvaukee pioneer brewing family
Beautifully decorated for the holidays. I didn't take the tour as it seemed a touch long but the pamphlet you receive gives a good synopsis of each room. Admission fees are a little higher than I would like but not completely prohibitive.
Very large mansion that has been undergoing a restoration for the past 30+ years. Most rooms are in pristine condition. The tour takes about 90 minutes and is extremely informative. A must-see.
Very informative. Must visit
Very good example of "state of the art" housing in the latter 19th century. Exotic wood paneling and trim different in every room. Very knowledgeable tour guide.
Liked it. Friendly staff. It worth visiting there.
Wonderful condition. Great look back to the old days.
Highly recommended, beautifully kept and restored mansion. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and entertaining.
The Pabst Mansion is a must see in Milwaukee! It is especially lovely during Christmas when it is all decked out. There is limited parking in the lot next to the mansion but there is additional parking across the street which is also free. Certain times they do guided tours of the basement and attic which are areas usually not open to the general public. I believe this is the nicest Mansion in The Midwest. They did a great job of restoring and preserving.
The Pabst Mansion is a stunning Flemish revival structure - very ornate with heavy German influence as you would expect from a leading beer family. The tour guides are well-informed and make the tour interesting. Guided tours are on the hour, but what is not clear in advance is that you MUST take a guided tour - you cannot walk through at your own pace. So don't show up at 10 minutes after the hour because you'll be waiting awhile for the next tour. Plan ahead and you will be glad you visited this property. Pabst Mansion makes the family and beer industry culture more understandable than if you only tour a brewery.
If you like to tour elegance, give it a whirl.
Very interesting history and a beautiful place inside
I thoroughly enjoyed touring the mansion and hearing all about the Pabst family history. I would definitely visit again.
A nice mansion worth the visit. Only guided tours were allowed, so we had to wait about 30 minutes. But the guide was knowledgeable and had a great time.
Wonderful tour of an amazing American mansion! Try it. You'll be impressed.
There really isn't that much to see. Nothing really stands out. It does kill an hour if you have out of town guests. My recommendation however, would be to bring them to the museum. It is far more interesting and you can anger if you choose to.
The history is amazing, the preservation of this mansion is outstanding. Tours are very reasonable. Definitely a must stop!
Great tour! I loved the guided tour, my family not so much. They like to do at on pace. I like the history you learn from the guided.
We are so glad we toured the mansion while in Milwaukee. It's well worth the time and the tour price is reasonable. We toured on a Sunday and wanted the noon tour since we were heading onto Green Bay that day and didn't want to be delayed. A good tip is to check if the gift shop has opened early to sell tickets. We got there slightly before noon to find out others had bought tickets already. We snagged the last four tickets so it worked out.
Wonderful Milwaukee history. If you haven't been there and you live in Milwaukee, you are soooooo wrong.
This is a beautiful old mansion, some restoration in progress, but well worth the visit. There is a small parking lot to the west side of the mansion.
Great stop, very interesting place and story.
Absolutely an incredible piece of history! Well worth the time to go. Tour is very informative and the price is reasonable. Definitely a must see!
This mansion tour was really fun and interesting. They have spent an unbelievable amount of time and money into it's restoration. The admission price was fair and the guide did a great job. She was a little old lady who knew literally everything about the mansion and made sure the large group I was a part of was included and comfortable. I would definitely recomend this if you like mansion tours.
Awesome history about the Pabst family!
Attended on a free admission day while looking for something fun to do outside the city. Was a unique experience. Multiple tour guides in the house, stationed to guide you but most did not have any information or ability to answer questions. While they were volunteers, it would have been nice for them to share a bit of insight or knowledge about the rooms of the house. Overpriced for a short visit, not something you’d return to do multiple times.
Two weeks ago I had the pleasure of visiting this beautiful hidden jewel while visiting Milwaukee. The tours are self guided but there are wonderfully knowledgeable folks there who add so much to the story of this beautifully restored home. If you were a fan of Downton Abbey or have visited the Biltmore in Asheville, NC you will love this place as I did. I am from Michigan and can hardly wait to visit Milwaukee again. If you live in Milwaukee you need to support this amazing part of your history!
The mansion was beautiful and the tour illuminating. You will walk away far more knowledgeable not only of the Pabst family history but of the greater Milwaukee city history and the life they lived with other major local entrepreneurs. Our tour covered the history of the Pabst family life while moving through their 3 story home over about an hour and 15 min. I think you'll appreciate the intricate woodwork and detail throughout the house.
Extremely knowledgeable docents! Very thorough tour.
One of the best Museums I've been to. So much history and so much to learn. We could have asked the guy questions for days and he wouldn't have run out of answers. There is always something being brought back to its original quality or brought in and it's unbelievable the ways they've been able to recall the past in order to do what they've done here.
This was a really cool tour. The only way to see the house's interior is through a tour. They offer tours on the hour and they have senior and student discounts available. Our tour guide was friendly and knowledgeable. There is a floor that is largely unrennovated, but the rest of the house has had incredible work done to restore it to it's original splendor. There are also photos of the family so you can kind of envision their life in the home. Definitely a fun activity to do if you enjoy history and walking tours.
Such a gorgeous house with amazing tour guides and lots of things to learn. It is not completely renovated but 95% done and looks beautiful.
Very interesting site, tour guide was excellent bringing out and sharing many interesting facts
Incredible. The whole story, the whole place. Must see
Awesome experience!!
There are many historical things.roof carving ,furniture ,all rooms are well maintained and attractive .
One of the best preserved old historic mansions I have seen (and I've seen more than a few!). They have given meticulous attention to detail and everything is very accurate and well explained by the very knowledgeable tour guide. Absolutely beautiful woodwork and hand painted wall coverings. Just stunning! And just enough history of the Pabst family to inform but not bore. The only complaint we have is that our tour guide really rushed us from room to room and refused to give you any time to look or take photos at all when she was done with her explanation of the room. We really felt like we had to look really fast and rush to the next part. We left feeling a little bit dazed and wanting more. The tour was just over an hour; we felt another half an hour would have been plenty of time to take away that rushed feeling. Overall, though, totally worth the time and money and visit to a not-so-nice part of town. Beautiful place!
One of the last remaining great Mansions on what was Grand Avenue. The Pabst Mansion is a time capsule of the late 19th century and it houses a good portion of the original furnishings. After 40 years the foundation is still bringing this Milwaukee gem back to its original glory. So if it's been over ten years since your last visit I would recommend a return trip.
What a beautiful place! Located right near Marquette University, it is in a cool section of Milwaukee. More impressive though, are the 37 rooms of this mansion! Amazing woodwork, and a great prince of Milwaukee history. I learned a great deal about The Captain! A recommended rainy-day activity. It's a little pricey ($12 for 75min tour) but worth seeing once.
Gorgeous and well kempt, beautiful Christmas display. Not inexpensive, but worth it.
It is amazing. I recommend visiting if you have the slightest interest in architecture or history.
I loved it!
Nice tour of the mansion. Worth the trip had an excellent docent 1 pm tour 7/27. Sorry didn't catch her name.
The mansion is beautiful!!! The tour guide was funny and informative. Definitely a must see for locals and visitors.
A step back into history. Our docent was excellent and the tour was very interesting. Glad we went.
Beautiful and great tour guide
Really interesting to see the history of the Pabst family. The restoration is fabulous.
Interesting tour of this lovely and mostly restored home. Lasted about an hour.
Such a wonderful experience we are visiting again
Oh my goodness.... you have to see this place! Roughly $15/ person to take the tour, very interesting facts and history about this place and the "memorabilia" included Very cool home to check out, definitely a good place to check out while anyone is in Milwaukee area, if you have a couple hours to burn.
Well what can i say that others haven't lol. We were lucky and had a really private tour on a slow day at the end of May. Lovely tour guide who clearly loved the home and what she did. Very informative, can't wait for the atrium to be restored to the way it was when moved from the World's Fair original location and before the church got ahold of it. It is very exciting to see all the works in motion here. The home itself is fantastic and inspirational.. what a great place this must of been to grow up, the best it could of been for the times with electricity and utilities and kitchen. Great place do drop in and take a visit if you have opportunity.
Must see venue for anyone interested in Milwaukee history. Take the tour or attend one of the events. Spectacular restoration and preservation of a bygone era.
This is a wonderful place to visit during the Holiday Season! It is breathtaking.
Visited the mansion with my family for Christmas. We were told there would be a docent in each room but they were not very accessible to us. I did mention to a docent that I wondered how they traveled the tight staircase with their gowns and she condescendingly stated, “Mrs. Pabst would never use the servant’s stairs”. I simply smiled and mentioned to my daughter that I believe the servants wore rather wide gowns also. There was no furniture in the master bedroom which was disappointing and the sink in the kitchen was full of ornaments which made it difficult to see it. There were a few advertisements of who decorated the individual rooms which I thought was unnecessary. Outside the home there was a very distasteful sour smell, the ground was covered by what appeared to be fermented fruit. It would seem to me that the caretakers would pay equal attention to the outside as they did the inside of the house.
You learn a great deal about Captain Pabst, and his beautiful and stately mansion. If you are in the Milwaukee area it’s worth checking out.
Went at Christmas so the extra decorations were beautiful. Only draw back at that time it's self-guided. Other times a guide will tell you info about the mansion and family. Well worth the money, I might go again
Tour guide was very knowledgeable.
Great tour..love the architecture and history!
This is a beautiful mansion and a great informative tour with docents who love the history. You get to see so much of the house!
What a BEAUTIFUL mansion. We took the tour and learned a lot.
Knowledgeable tour guide, awesome woodworking, and the stained glass inspired me!
We took a group of our family on this tour today. We had 11 people in all including a small child. We were less than impressed by some of the staff. First off after paying for our family to go at $24 a piece, we got placed in a group of an additional 11 people. This made it crowded and hard to hear what the tour guide was sayIng and to fully enjoy the tour. Then when our child was getting crabby and we left the group to stand directly outside the room the group was in with our child so he wouldn’t interrupt the tour, we were rudely addressed by another tour guide and to “go back to our group” and she said, “I’m starting another tour here”. The tour group she had was 2 people! These tour groups should be smaller in number so that everyone can enjoy the tour. And all staff members should address people with respect and kindness.
Truly a GREAT STORY, FRIENDLY PEOPLE...
Absolutely beautiful restoration work has been done to this building. The tour was great, very knowledgeable tour guide. Highly recommend going on the tour, well worth it.
The Pabst Mansion Twilight Tour was a wonderful event and would highly recommend. It something the whole family can enjoy.
Rummage sale was crowded but fun
The mansion is really nice. The tour was informative, and the gift shop has good stuff. The only suggestion I would have is to make the tours smaller, or when there are large amounts of people split the group up. It was difficult to see some of the rooms since they were small, and with 10 or more people it's a bit cramped.
Great tour of this fabulously restored, fully furnished home. The tour gave us a detailed look into the Pabst family as well as the American beer industry. An EXCELLENT value for the price.
Unique place to kill and hour or so of time and learn the history of the midwest's more famous beer. Get there at minimum 30 minutes before a schedule tour as tickets go quickly!
Nice place! In need of some repair!
One of the best tours ever!!! Beautiful home restored to it's original grandeur. Great knowledge staff
Beautiful home, great tour!
Beautiful wood and marble. Classic!
The day we were there, we only had time to view the building from the outside. The intricate details were just amazing. The upkeep of the building has been done right! We will make time to view inside the next time we are in Milwaukee!
A hidden jewel in Milwaukee. We were surprised by the ornate woodwork and the restoration that was talked about by the guide. The reason I didn't give '5 stars' is because the tour was TOO short! I would have liked to have the opportunity to look closer at some details, but it was the last tour of the day so I completely understood.
Pabst was Caption of a ship but then he became a brewery and had 10 children and adopted a child in a lovely mansion. Awesome.
Beautiful old Mansion. Loved the ladies who worked there in the gift shop and giving the tours. A must see when you are in Milwaukee.
Great tour of 3 floors -all rooms shown with lots of stories and history
Built in 1890, this mansion has withstood the test of time. Early American craftsmanship at its finest, with attention to all the details. Tours are available to learn more about Captain Pabst's historic estate. A must see for architecture buffs.
Holiday at the mansion. This is so beautiful and full of history. The staff is very accommodating and very helpful. They answer any questions you may have all the way to the heatung system. It is very accessible in restrooms and entryways and elevator to each floor. It is walker-friendly. the aisles are wide and comfortable. There is a marvelous gift shop and throughout the house there are areas where you are able to purchase ornaments at this time of year that are made of beeswax. You can take advantage of guided tours in tours with special lighting at night. There are not many of these types of mansions left in fact the Pillsbury Mansion is now being destroyed as it wasn't able to be kept up. As you see in the photos there are upkeeps being done here and your patronage is key to keeping Milwaukee history alive. If you are from out of town this will be one site you do not want to miss out on. If you're from Milwaukee be a tourist in your own town learn your history feel your history and if you think you liked living in Milwaukee before you will love living in Milwaukee once you learn about the Pabst Mansion and see its beauty..
A very interesting place to visit. I learned a lot about the Pabst family and the time period they lived in plus the history of the mansion by taking the tour.
Step back in time to experience a different in Milwaukee's history. Truly showcasing the beer baron legacy.
Great Piece of History, on a side note , I bought this piece of china there and recently broke the handle...where can I find a replacement ?
Loved it! Great tour! I recommend it very highly!
A nice tour of the historic mansion. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable, and the staff was friendly. The house has a lot of beautiful and interesting details with stories to match.
Beautiful house and excellent tour. Would recommend visiting for locals and outsiders alike!
Beautiful and guides are very informative
I’ve been to many other house museums in the country and I think this is one of the best. The docents are very knowledgeable and the staff is friendly. I’ve been to many events here, but make the Christmas Gala an annual tradition. I actually liked the Pabst so much, I became a volunteer.
Very cool place. High admission price, but the tour was very informative and much of the things you'll see are true and authentic - some of it isnt. Great tour guide. Would go back in a few years to see if or what they've updated more
Really neat house, with great decor. If you want like historical houses, this one offers more than many. Looking forward to the chapel restoration.
The restoration of this property along with the history provided during the tour gives such a good prospective of how the high society brewers lived in the Midwestern cities of the US.
Because we had a very large group, we called weeks ahead to set up a tour. Everything went so smoothly. The docents were well-informed, with a great sense of humor. The house has beautifully detailed woodwork and stained glass. It was interesting to learn the process for restoring the rooms. Excellent tour!
Great visual, great for the one who drinks. The shop has great prices and wonderful people (1 visit)
Very interesting. Super informative. Came back after touring the mansion in March.
Amazing, breathtaking, stunning! Tour guide Barb was phenomenal. Must see!
Cool place to visit and get the background on the Pabst family
Wonderful all set up for Christmas. How is structa how much profit there is in beer haha
Absolutely worth the visit. This is what a mansion is....everything custom built and handmade. The technology back in the day was impressive...intercom system, etc for a home built in mid 1800's. Each room has its own theme. I will be back to soak up the historical home again!
Amazing window into history and an incredible family. Fantastic guide too. Definitely worth visiting.
Fantastic tour of one of the only mansion's still standing from that era. Very informative guides! Highly recommend if in Milwaukee.
Our guide was so informative and the mansion is gorgeous. It was a wonderful step back in time with both the setting and the stories. Highly recommend..
Amazing architecture, interesting story & history about Capt Pabst & his family.
No unescorted tours because of doors open. I'll see it next time.
Well maintained and we had a knowledgeable tour guide. I enjoyed learning about the Pabst family.
Beautiful old Mansion. I am glad it didn't become a parking lot! A great place to go to get a bit of Milwaukee's Beer making history.
Must stay if you're a techie or history buff.
DO NOT GO TO THIS MANSION EVER THEY ARE ALL MORONS
Beautiful architecture. The detail of wood work, stained glass and the history was impressive. The tour guide was very knowledgeable of the family history and home restoration. I wish we were able to take photos of the inside for memorable moments, but was told we could not.
Really cool piece of Milwaukee history. The house itself is truly artisan and the knowledge of the staff makes this tour worth while. I am not a huge history buff but I really enjoyed this house
Beautiful house. Its such a shame to think the whole street was covered with mansions at one time, and this one was almost tore down to build a parking lot for a holiday inn. As if that wasn't bad enough, they've had to spend countless dollars undoing awful design choices from the 60's when everyone decided to paint over wood work and wall paper. Its worth taking a tour at least to donate the money for restoration.
Spectacular tour and our tour guide, Karen made the tour so interesting and informative! Would recommend it to everyone!
I got a ticket for 3 p.m. tour and because I was the only one, my tour was kind of private
Such a fun and informative tour! Our tour guide, Carolyn, was very knowledgeable and kept our attention with every detail. The mansion is beautiful and accommodating for visitors with physical disabilities. It does not look like much from the outside, but is very impressive on the inside. We are excited to visit again in a few years to see the changes made during the upcoming restoration.
Worth the tour very informative
Great tour!
The history and architecture was amazing. We had an excellent tour guide that was very knowledgeable. It is such a beautiful building.
Very enjoyable. If you need elevator, ask. They do have one.
The architecture and design is amazing. I wish craftsmanship like that still existed today. The docent was very knowledgeable and I learned a lot. The gift shop has cute gifts like a beer can candle and beer soap. I would definitely recommend.
Absolutely loved this tour!! Very knowledgeable tour guide with a sense of humor. If you love historical places this should definitely be on your list of places to see in Milwaukee!
Closed during the estate sale...bummer
We were there for their annual Christmas themed decorations. You not only get to see a classic mansion, you experience the glory days in it's holiday majesty. All the antique rooms and decor with Christmas trees and custom decorations put together with painstaking effort together with volunteers present on every floor to answer your questions or to explain the background. Great experience.
An amazing old mansion that is in the process of finishing restoration the tour guides have an abundance of information it is a ornate posche mansion that anyone who loves history should see
Amazing place to visit.
Very interesting & beautiful!!
Fascinating tour and docent (Barb) did a great job describing the history and architecture. It appears a "behind the scenes" tour is offered to go more in depth with details and visit more areas of house (attic and basement) - would have loved to do that, so will try for it on a future visit.
Guided tour of the house for a little over an hour. Worth the visit
This place is undervalued. It is a big piece of Milwaukee history and so few people take advantage. Yes the kids will say it sounds boring, but once they get there, they usually change their minds. The membership is very much worth the 85.00 because you can go back and be a part of this evolving restoration. Mother's Day is a day with open self guided tours of all 5 levels. The daily tours take you to three of these. According to staff, they are adamant there are no hauntings and nobody has died in the house so ghost hunters might strike out. On the other hand, those afraid of old buildings because they may be haunted, no worries. I was hoping to hear a ghost story or two but not only do they squash that question if you ask, they do not like you to ask within earshot of other guests. Usually I can tell if there is a haunting and I felt nothing. But it is a great place. The house, for being as old as it is, is very structurally sound. The floors are all level, the walls show no cracks, and the stairs feel stronger than newer grand staircases so again, no worries for people afraid to go in old buildings because they fear something might cave in. (Yes, there are ppl out there and I am one of them) It is a great introduction to Milwaukee history and just might build your thirst to learn more either here in Milwaukee or elsewhere. Don't forget Mother's Day. IDK the rates, but well worth it and again the memberships because you just might want to go back to see what they do for Christmas or other holidays.
Cool place, parking is across the street.
A must see if you are in Milwaukee! Beautiful home and much history. Very knowledgeable and friendly tour guide and staff.
The mansion is beautiful and extremely well preserved. The tour was interesting and compelling. Kudos to Karen for her knowledge and her gift to share it.
Beautiful mansion and our tour guide was great. Historical society has done a great job restoring to it's original state and continues to do more.
Awesome tour, very detailed and loved every minute of it!.
This is SO worth seeing
Very nice
Love love love. The pabst mansion is beautiful and amazing. It has an amazing history and I really enjoyed learning about it. It a must see especially if your really into historic stuff. I would go back multiple times it's that good
Tha History is fascinating! It was so interesting to see how the privileged lived during that time! The craftmanship of that time is astounding! We were in AWE! Our guide was superb as well! Go see this if you're in the area! I still think back on it!
We visited right before Christmas. House was absolutely gorgeous. Very few other people were there. . .the staff was very informative. Had a wonderful day. Definitely want to redo this in the spring.
Incredible workmanship in the house. A remarkable number of pieces that were original to the house. As the only mansion of its time open for viewing, it is a treasure.
Great place beautiful Mansion. It takes about 75 mins and it's a guided tour. Well worth if you have the time!
Nice place
We ended up catching the last tour of the day and there was just my husband and I and another couple. I am not going to lie, I didn't want to go, but my husband really wanted to. However, during and after the tour, I really appreciated that we went. It was VERY informative and a really amazing mansion. I highly recommend attending the tour and wearing comfortable shoes as some details in the house is explained that one will miss if you have no prior knowledge of the mansion. Alongside the tour guide, they explain almost every piece of the house along with some stories/history that has occurred. I asked if the mansion is haunted and got a "Not really haunted". Enjoy!
A great house museum with lots of beautiful woodwork inside. They offer guided tours everyday. Other than the architecture and the brewing business I was fascinated with the art collection here. Some amazing paintings are shown here which were collected by Pabst family. If you enjoy art and history, a visit to the Pabst Mansion is a must.
