REVIEWS OF The House on the Rock IN Wisconsin

Incredible collections of the strangest things. All the way from dollhouses to pipe organs this place doesn't fail to capture your imagination. The architecture of the house itself is a wonder to behold. It's hard to believe that this came from the mind of one man. Be prepared to do a lot of walking up and down stairs as you work your way through the complex. Get there early so you have plenty of time to take in all the little oddities on display.

Marie Ballew

This is one of my favorite places in the USA. Dad and Mom took sister and I there in 70's. Went back as a teenager in early 80's and young adult with daughter in mid 80's. Again in 1998 when my niece and daughter were teenagers and my son was 6mths. Going to take son, now 21, niece and great nieces in 2020. Can't wait!!! So, so much to see and do!!! ❤❤

Emily Medler

This was a really near place. I got to see all the cool stuff this guy collected! It was amazing I want to come here again sometime.

Micki Maguire

Very unique place. The areas had a unpleasant odor and a fly issue where the whale is located. I'm glad I went.

Yesenia Villalobos

This is a very interesting place if you are a collector of oddities. The place is huge and has different rooms to look at so make sure you don't miss any of them especially not the carousel room.

It's a cool place. I've been there about 4/5 times now in the last 40 years. I think it was more impressional to me when I was about 8 or 10 yrs old. I still really like the dark older areas! Kind of a sense of mysteriousness and wonder. I will say however that there are some areas that look like they need some upkeep! The infinity room carpet is looking kind of gross, and a few of the automated music attractions where out of order which was disappointing. The last time we went was a humid rainy day in August and I don't think there was very good airflow in some of the areas, so several areas where kind of uncomfortably hot and stuffy.

Beverly Hensley

The first person we met was the ticket agent who did not offer us a map or tell us one was available and once in there are no maps! Very dark hard to see. Floors uneven and lights would have made walking less hazard less There really is a lot of dust and very warm inside. Also noticed not handicap friendly at all. Beautiful collections but need light to see them and cleaning

sue pitkin

This is my kinda heaven. A whole bunch of cool stuff collected by a man who built the coolest house I’ve ever been in on top of a rock. I could go on about all the big stuff like the world’s biggest carousel but it was the little stuff that delighted. If you like it weird, slightly off-kilter or just plain bonkers, then this is THE place for you!

Lisa Barlowkutter

Words can't even come close...just go its amazing and worth it. Bring your walking shoes and plan 3-4 hours. Food available inside and not expensive. Just amazing!!!

Ian Dietterick

Always a great day trip. So much to see. Can't wait to go back.

Marlana Mickelson

This place is one of a kind,.......with a lot of amazing things to see. I would highly recommend this place. We went through this together as a family, we have two young kids 4 years old and 7 years old and it was even entertaining for them.

Peter Flanagan

Had no clue what to expect. Can be a sensory overload but we enjoyed it so much that we drove back to spend a second day getting the full experience. A bucket list destination located in the scenic midwest.

Yauheni Padaliak

This place is unique and creepy. It's neither museum not a house. It has its own atmosphere. It has a lot to see and amuse. I love it!

John Bare

The house was cool on it's own but the museum collection was amazing. Be prepared for exercise. Lots of walking.

Jewel Huggins

Really enjoyed the house and all the collections. 5 hours of walking and enjoying every part.

Samantha Mathas

Great place! First time visitors: Definitely make sure you have at least 5 hours to spare. There is so much to see.

Sara Marie

Not clear on the website that you can’t bring a stroller in and that if it’s super f*ing hot like it was this past weekend that it might not be a great idea to visit for those who might be more prone to heat-related ailments. Waited in line for a ticket to be told I couldn’t bring a stroller in (wasn’t explained why but this became immediately clear as we entered). Asked same employee what might be the best tour then for myself and my 2 year old at which point she shoved a brochure in my face and told me to read about the options in the lobby and get back in line when I was ready. Some areas were climate controlled, others not at all. Very damp and mildew smelling in the main house. At least I didn’t come with our whole family and we won’t ever be back. Not worth it. Not for little kids at all- had this been more eloquently and tactfully explained to me or made more clear on the website I would have skipped this altogether but we were already there. I’m super surprised this place has as many 5 star reviews as it does

C

Very neat place and takes a couple hours to walk through. It just has tons of cool stuff. I would definately recommend checking it out.

Scott Howard

Still a great place to visit. It could use a good cleaning in a few places. It is amazing they keep almost everything functioning.

Erik Quamme

Alot of things not working and in need of repair. Unfortunate for this place as it has many neat things to see. I believe there focus needs to turn to updating and keeping things working instead adding new things.

Jonathan Conte

Lots of dust, mold, and fungi inside the original house. Ventilation is poor at best, quite possibly negligent. Visitors with breathing issues should restrict time in the old house, and bring rescue inhalers or other breathing gear. Too easy to get lost in, which is potentially dangerous here as most of the complex is in a cell phone dead zone. Old walkie-talkies/CB radio are used by staff because of this, so in case of an emergency, visitors will have to rely on staff to radio for help. Climate control is lacking, and visiting in the summer is NOT recommended for anyone who overheats easily, especially on hot and humid days. Until major improvements are made, I cannot in good conscience recommend visiting.

Vivian Perez

no words can describe my experience with house on the rock. quirky, offbeat, mysterious, and at times questionably demonic which is right up my alley! take your mind on a trip and hop outside your body for a one of a kind experience that only house on the rock can deliver! p.s., visit the weekends of october to also experience the dark side!

Marie Ballew

This is one of my favorite places in the USA. Dad and Mom took sister and I there in 70's. Went back as a teenager in early 80's and young adult with daughter in mid 80's. Ryan Brown

It will bombard the senses! I can't imagine keeping all that stuff pristine and fresh and working, but still worth it. My grand-daughters loved it.

Matthew Ellis

Its a fun and interesting experience. If you try to catch all the information in the welcome center and take the full tour it could turn into an all day endeavor. Focus on getting through all 3 sections and you are still looking at 3+ hours of walking. Food court strategically placed on the tour offers a welcome break. Certain parts inaccessible to strollers or wheelchairs. Lots of ups and downs on stairs and ramps. Housekeeping of actual exhibits could use improvement. An overall enjoyable and memorable experience.

fran B

Interesting collection of stuff..... And what place has the last bathrooms closed after tour. That is absolutely unacceptable!!

Sharlene Dittmann

This is an amazing place to experience! The drive there was beautiful the views around there and the home and tours of the house on the rock are outstanding!

Tiff M

Don't go on a really hot day as we went when it was in the mid 70's and many of the areas indoors were uncomfortably hot. It would be nice if carpeted areas were kept vacuumed. Some improvements have been made since I was last there about 30 yrs ago but a lot has also been let go.

Mike Kister

Fantastic, eclectic collections and architecture. Like nothing I have ever seen. All three sections are worthwhile and very different. Very friendly and helpful staff.

Tina Dassow

LOVED IT!!! We did the "Ultimate" tour and had a wonderful time. So much to see, we spent over 5 hours there exploring. Some of the collections are truly mind boggling.

Nicole Olson

Went with my teenage kids on a very hot day in July. It was the perfect place to visit. There was hardly anyone there (late in the day) and for the most part it was climate controlled so it was comfortable. The kids really enjoyed the infinity room and all the sights and coin operated attractions along the way.

Cathy Ford

Visited as a child, went back this year a my birthday present to myself. Had the best time. It's a truly amazing place, as is The House on the Rock Inn. Take a couple days off and go see it for yourself, you'll be glad you did!!

Kaitie Emily

This place is a Wisconsin treasure. The sights within the manor was well worth the 3 hour drive in a car with no air conditioning. It made a memorable experience for my boyfriend and I.

Jim St. John

When you are in central Wisconsin with family and friends you really must spend a day browsing through this incredible and unique tourist event!

James G

Eclectic rambling creation of a very very wealthy eccentric man. Very extensive creation of a non normal mind or genius!

Rachel Bbbver

As someone that grew up in the midwest, going to this place is a must, so I was looking forward to my visit. I feel like none of the reviews for this place were honest, so I wanted to throw in my two cents. For starters, it's gross. The main house smells like dust, bad old-man cologne, and mildew. The whole place is covered in dust and falling in to a state of decay, and it seems that rather than keep up with maintenance, they turn the lights down to hide it. Which brings me to my second complaint: it's really dark. You can't see a large number of items because they have the lights so low. Third, a large majority of the interactive displays are broken. Fourth, this place was an absolute nightmare to get through with young kids. They weren't entertained at all, and were mostly creeped out and stressed by the time we left. Lastly, it's mostly fake, cheap reproductions. I mean, if visiting some hoarders opium den sounds like fun to you, go for it. I won't be returning.

NIc Buss

Absolutely love this place. Such an incredible collection of historical pieces and fun place to take the family. Our 6 year old loved it and our 15 month old was enthralled as well. Definitely do the full tour of all 3 sections, you won't be disappointed. The little pizza place was great, and the staff is extremely helpful. Also, the fudge in the gift shop is definitely worth it too! We will definitely be coming back in the summer when the Japanese garden is in full bloom and Inspiration point is open as well.

Jon Engle

Incredible place! We could have spent an entire day or more wandering around. So many collections and wonderful antiques. Really is an amazing house and collection. Also the amazing gardening and flowers. The musical instruments and gun collection are one of a kind. Can't wait to go back and try to see what we missed.

Katie G

The craziest and most bizarre place I've ever been. Really enjoyed all the curiosities, however could use some maintenance and cleaning.

Greg Nuse

As much as I want to give this place 5 stars, I just cannot. Two visits one year apart, and not a thing had been repaired, or cleaned. The collections are tremendous. Eye candy and fascinating things are just heaped into every inch of this place. Some of the music machines are in truly abysmal condition and I’m amazed they still take your tokens to watch them struggle to function. The amount of dust accumulated on everything shows that zero effort is being made to clean. Simply no excuses for this. Finally, the smell in the whale room is stomach churning. The moldy festering smell of decay is disturbing and overwhelming in this area. I absolutely love this place and despite its faults I can not recommend it enough, but I am truly saddened by the obvious neglect, and lack of passion the current owners seem to be putting into it.

Lisa Pusin

This was my second time in this whimsical magical place. My family had taken relatives from Canada and Australia here and everyone has been impressed with the house and the whimsical collections and art! Absolutely recommend this place, especially start the tours when it opens up at 9am to beat the crowds. Lunch is available for purchase halfway through the attraction and it took about 4 hours to complete Sections 1-3 including walking around the gardens! Enjoy this gem in the Midwest, it's a must!!

Holly McBride

I have been wanting to visit The House on the Rock ever since I read about it in Neil Gasiman's book 'American Gods'. I was not disappointed! So many beautiful and eclectic antiques. Alex Jordan has built a legacy for himself by sharing The House on the Rock with the public. Can't wait to visit again!

John Koppenhaver

Absolutely blew our minds. This place has to be seen and experienced to be understood. Wow. Just wow.

Rebekah Rietveld

Great place! We Went later in the afternoon and various different staff somewhat rushed us through to make sure we we're out on time. A little too dark at time and the music was a little loud at times as well. Oddly interesting ramshackle collection of things.

Aaron Wiese

I'm not sure what to say about this magical place. It almost seems like straying from a dream and not quite waking, but for hours. It's imaginative, it's eclectic, it's a wonderful experience for anyone who loves to let their imagination run free.

Anandan Sundaram

I liked this place. It is a very cool place too look around and hang out with your families. It is fun to see cool new things.

Erin Krajenke

If you happen to be in the area (I don't know why you would be...we were here to see this...fortunately Taliesin is also in Spring Green) this is a must see. I have heard of this place for years and it was neat to finally see it. The house is broken up into 3 sections, so you can chose to see what you want, but honestly, plan on seeing all 3 sections, otherwise you are missing out. We spent 4 hours here and I have to say it did get to be a bit too much and I have to imagine Alex Jordan was crazy. As a fan of architecture, I enjoyed the home portions the most, but everything was very interesting. There is also a cafe about halfway through, which is perfect since it seems to be that time where you are thirsty or a little hungry. And I am pleased to say the pizza we had there was pretty tasty.

Jeremy John

I always love going to the HOTR. Take all 3 tours. Pace yourself, it can be along walk. My companion and I were tired at the end of the day, but it was a good tired! Loved it!

Bob Berndt

Very nice, but lots of ramps and steps. It's divided into three sections. If you go through all three sections it takes several hours and is approximately 3 miles of walking. Well worth the trip to visit but it sure wore us out.

Lisa Pusin

May Hresko

Interesting stop on our trip west. The home is too dark for my taste, but the whole story is very interesting. The infinity room is unique and offers great views. Alex Jordans life must have been very interesting.

Wendy Reynolds

This is place is amazing ... make sure you have plenty of time to spend at least 3-4 hours here ITS WORTH IT!! You have so much to look at and enjoy it’s exciting to see! Truly neat to think how they came up with ideas of the different things or how they even got it all in there!! It’s definitely a place to go and I wouldn’t hesitate in going again!!! I’m sure there’s things I missed seeing since there was SO MUCH TO SEE!! Love it

Jeff Schmidt

Decided I needed to check it out before watching "American Gods" so I could see the Carousel Room in person. Really fun but almost overwhelming. There's too much stuff to take in in one trip.

Joe Sabah

Wow. Place is unbelievable. There are some really cool exhibits. Well worth the price of admission. Bring a flashlight. There are allot of things that are difficult to see without additional light. Infinity room is really cool.

Tim H

Amazing place. Hard to describe... Museum-esque entertainment and wonder at every turn. So much to see. So much to experience. I went to all 3 areas and I'll be back again I'm sure.

Daniel Cardenas

Its absolutely stunning and I will continue to share this treasure with anyone I can. Hauntingly stunning, it just really opens you up

StormGamer

Very big and cool place! The creativity and things is awesome! The little places and self playing music. I can't really explain it all! You must go here.

Jared Greanya

I can see the appeal for some people, but it's not my sort if thing. The coolest part to me was the room that extended into eternity.

Ashes Lynn

So much more than we expect. Wear good walking shoes cause the place is HUGE and you're going to want to see everything.

Justin Earley

Great way to spend the afternoon. I try to go here once a year as there is always something I missed the last time I walked through. Definitely recommend!

Keemstar get on my radar

It was amazing seeing what one man's imagination can do. The art and objects inside the facility just blew my mind. It was a very fun experience for me and I would go back. The only reason I wouldn't give 5 stars is that I put a token in the passion meter machine it did not work.

Kitty Cat

Magical! The coolest! Halloween was amazing here! I love this crazy house! Bring a snack and some water, it is a very long day once inside! Took us over 5 hrs to see everything and I bet we missed a bunch of stuff! So so so awesome and weird!

Robin Bivens

This place is way beyond awesome. It's the only one that has a room that's not supported and you can walk out to the point. And they have a full carousel in one room. There are several different rooms with different things. A definite place to see.

Becky Jaeger

Amazing time soo much to see. The Dark Side tour was awesome as well.

Daniel O'Grady

What a weird and unexpected journey this place is. You start in the house itself, see the infinity room, and you think "okay this is a kooky house...cool architecture"...but nothing prepares you for the sensory overload and descent into madness that comes after that. You have to experience it for yourself. It's not something that can fully be explained.

Andra St. Arnauld

Expect to stay 3+ hours. The house itself is only a small fraction of the event. If you can't do a lot of walking only buy tickets for part of the tour. There are 3 parts. Also some of the structure gets very warm-beware on hot days.

Jessie Schilling

I took my Son as my parents took me as a young adult. Great price for an entire day of looking at so many neat random things collected all in one place. The infinity room is the best experience! Try the homemade fudge in the gift shop

Andy Brown

Phenomenal. Really awesome place. Didn't realize how big it was. It was worth every penny. I wish we had a whole day to explore everything.

Andrew Pierce

Amazing roadside attraction. Tacky fantastic. An unbelievable assemblage of weird and unusual stuff. You will take 3 or 4 hours to go through the whole thing if you rush. Be sure to not arrive late in the day or you may run out of time. See the world's largest carousel. You can't ride but it's an incredible art piece. Hear multiple automated musical orchestras. A bit dark and a bit dusty (if you have allergies be warned). If you have a particular interest in pipe organs, model ships, doll houses, dolls, historical guns, weapons and armor, musical automatons, carousel horses, crowns, or miniture circus collectables you're going to be in heaven. If some of those categories sound interesting enough then you'll be OK too. There's all that and more.

Jennifer Bischoff

Amazing so much to see each room is so different you will need alot time to go though the thing

Анастасія Загвоцька

Very weird and charming place. Here you can see many different collections and discover the history. I really liked the ships. Carousel is a cherry on a cake. unfortunately, I was not persuaded to visit the third section. Especially impressive musical accompaniment. Before you enter do not forget to buy tokens.

Wendy Klein

Fascinating place. Our favorite part was the infinity room, and we enjoyed the nautical history section, but I'd definitely be wary of coming on a day when it is warm out - very few sections have air conditioning, and the parts with narrow passageways, ambient lighting, and/or loud calliope music had a tendency to feel overwhelming.

Nicole Morgan

Huge collections of some of the most mundane things and some of quite interesting things. Guarentee you will NEVER see a place like this anywhere else. It is quite unbelievable in its scale, imagination, and audacity. There seems to be always new things to discover.

Belinda White

It was sometthing I never expected , lost for words. I thought it was so unbelieveable. I'd love to go back again.

Brad Hackel

The outside gardens were nice. But inside, this place is musty, tight walking and somewhat creepy. I did not like the collection of artifacts on display. I thought this place was about the gardens and a marvel house built in the side of a mountain. I deleted all photos expect this one.

Teresa M

This is a unique & awesome place to see! Unfortunately, many things did not work. It needs some deep cleaning & TLC...

Natalie H

Worth the visit but plan for 4 to 5 hours for all three sections of home and be prepared to walk. We loved it!

DEVYN BARKER

This place was an amazing experience i feel like if i went there multiple times each time id see something else

Mark Walker

You will never see anything like this anywhere else on the planet! This place is a destination, not a casual drive by. Plan to spend the day. It’s truly amazing the amount of memorabilia that Alex collected in his like time.

Christina Jones

Absolutely love this place!!! No matter how many times I go... I always find things I didn't see or notice the previous times!!! Definitely suggest this place to others

Dave Hall

It's been 30 years since we were there last. The place is amazingly huge. By the end we were just ready to go. I would say option 1 and 2 were plenty. But they put the carousel in option 3. Your there. I say do them all. An amazing collection of stuff!

Amy D

Definitely worth the price of admission and a must see with so many unique and wild stuff

Diana Byrns

Definitely more than 5 stars! Not just house on the rock. The house has the most comprehensive collections unimaginable! Super creative! Must, must visit! Need to visit all 3 sections. Need at least 2.5-hrs even if u are fast. $29.95 definitely worth it!

Joe Stan

Enchanted place. Magical. Falling down the rabbit hole. Somewhat gloomy, doomy and depressing or maybe quite the opposite... Spending there a few hours by browsing and strolling, listening to sounds, wicked music, watching the strangest things, all with that moldy, foggy scent of the grandma's old house attic and atmosphere of an old graveyard, feels like entering another time space. I mean, no museum or art gallery will give that. I'll come back...

Stephen Etheridge

Always fun. Hard to describe. So many features. Kind of like a house built inside of Starve Rock. Get there early at opening. Large tour busses can make it crowded. Not cheap. You will be there a while, so allot enough hours, 4+. Many hotels nearby. Not far from Taliesen, (Frank Lloyd Wright).

Becky Lund

So much to see! Spent 3 hours there and still don't think we saw everything! Definitely would go again

olivia schanandore

It was fun and interesting to explore. You need time to explore all three sections. I give it 3 stars because the cut you off at 4 pm from section 3. They close at 5pm, and we could have had time to get thru section 3 even at 4:10.

Jordan Disterhaft

Go early enough so you can really take everything in. Its really beautiful in the fall.

Stephanie Spears

This place has something for everyone. I am so glad I took my kids here. We still talk about it.

Brent Bowser

Creative, eclectic, unique, and unusually fun family experience. My family enjoyed this museum/attraction. I have been coming here since I was a child and really enjoyed how much our boys and my wife really enjoyed the experience. Tour took about 2-3 hrs to complete. Gift shop was as impressive but staff and food prices were good. Will be stopping back again with the family!

Marcus Turner

Still trying to figure out how to describe this place to my friends. Very unique and very retro. Hot, dusty and outdated but way cool. Don't change a thing. I loved it.

Sandra Harrison

It is absolutely an amazing! If you haven't been you got to see it at least one time in your life. Was there when I was 8 years old, and yesterday I was 68 I enjoyed it just as much as ever. However, there is a lot of walking so be prepared!

Rebecca Laube

A childhood memory for me and I had the pleasure of taking my boyfriend and the kids to see it for their first time. The kids were amazed! Those are wonderful childhood memories I hope they pass down to their kiddos

Sabrina Brown

We have been here twice now and we keep discovering new things with each visit. This is the one place that should be on everyone’s Wisconsin bucket list. Every room is another clue into Alex Jordan’s mind. The carousel is breathtaking and the music rooms are my favorite. If you have time make sure to stop by Taliesin and the surrounding area of Frank Lloyd Wright’s childhood.

Flynn Castellanos

Best 3.5 hours I've ever spent in Wisconsin! A quasi-museum that would be great for any date night/day!

Kristine Storti

Amazing. You could spend a month and not see everything. The main house is incredible. Definitely worth seeing.

Chris Henry

Iconic place to visit. Plan on spending over 2 hours exploring. Be advised it about 2 hours of walking if you visit everything.

DENNIS Taylor

Out standing. Buy the full admission ticket. Worth every penny of it. Took us 3 hours but could of taken 5 hours to see everything. A must see.

Robert Powell

Very driven individual. Love delving into Jorden's compulsions and creativity. Great architecture and tremendous eclectic collections.

Kathy Larson

Lots to see. So many collections. Plus a beautiful view.

Rebecca Elliott

I love this place awesome staff ❤️ it was my first time going really good impression

Emmy Treanor

We had so much fun. The girls love it. We stayed at the hotel as well and we used the two day pass. It was nice to have both days so we didn’t have to rush through. It was a lot of walking but we will be back. I would love to make it a yearly trip.

Bridget Pfannes

We thought the fee to get in was quite expensive in regards to the experience provided. The place was divided into 3 parts with an entry fee for each. For 2 adults and one 12 year old it was $75 to see the entire thing. The carousel was beautiful ! We were unimpressed by the rest. We were Told there was a restaurant. It was a snack bar with very limited expensive items attended by a cranky man. The gift shop cashier was cranky as well & displayed bad manners to us. We would not recommend going there.

Pam Thom

Was there years ago, it is even better now. We had a AWESOME DAY!!! Thanks

Arstotzkan Soldier

There are too many reasons to list why i love this place. But My girlfriend and I try to visit Annually. I recomend going in mid fall when the leaves are changing. It makes for a beautiful view.

Jay Humphries

I was blown away by this place. It is a must see destination. In short, it is a truly amazing place, but those dolls did freak me out a bit. Mr. Jordan was certainly a very eccentric fellow. ☺ FYI, plan to spend at least four hours, and don't forget to allow time to visit the gift shop.

Angela Thornburgh

The full collection is an awe-inspiring testament to creative drive and collective human output. There is entirely too much to see in a day if you're interested in detail. Some of the musical oddities were under renovation or in need of it. If you're going for that, I would suggest checking in with the staff. Overall wonderful area, architecture, and collections.

Loki Liesmith

I had no idea what I was getting myself into. This is an all day extravaganza, an amazing place that you have to visit. Words can't Express this place.

Emily Moser

Quirkiest collection of random things. The music machines were really cool. Give yourself a few hours to see everything they have to offer.

Justin Cain

Very cool experience. Don't do all 3 sections if you have kids. My kids loved it, although a bit terrified, for the first 2 sections but were ready to get out by the end. Very dark and eccentric place. Think they need to tune some of the auto-bands. They sounded horrible and I remember them sounding great as a kid. Also the red carpet in the first section is gross. Other than that very cool but takes a certain mind to appreciate the bizarre collection.

David Ells

We had limited time available, so we only saw "the house". It was well worth the time. Genius at work.

Timothy Petersen

What a magical place. Full of history and odd things. The house is cool, but it's just the beginning, the real attraction are the collections of historical items. From guns to dolls, you name it there is probably 100 of them here. All built and collected by Alex Jordon with the money raised from admissions starting in the 1960s. It just grew from there. It takes about 4 hours at a leisurely pace. There is basic food half way through which is a nice break.

Doug Bunger

This place defies explanation. There is an entire section dedicated to trying to explain it, but then there are miles of paths that are just wow. I mean... This place had more artifacts in the men's room than entire wings of other museums.

Joanne Jackson

Huge with so much to see. A very humid day so damp inside from rocks sweating. Pretty dusty.

Laurel Carlson

Very interesting place. This was my 3rd visit over 30 years. Big changes each time. Well worth the time and $$.

peter wellman

Have your mind blown away by all of the collections of interesting things. Be prepared for walking, dim lighting, uneven surfaces, tight spaces and elevated walkways. A must see!

Erica K.

Literally the coolest and weirdest place I've ever been to. I can't even tell you how many times I said "wow".. lol... you've just got to go in order to know what I'm talking about.

brad packard

Was there 30 years ago and just went again. Looks like it hasnt been cleaned since last time i was there. Tons of dust and dirty. Made my allergies kick into high gear!!!!!...great attraction just needs some cleaning done!!

Sheryl Piellusch

Interesting place. Plan on walking a lot. You will need at least 4 hours to go through all sections. I would recommend not arriving after 1pm since they close at 5pm.

Casey Nold

Spent 4 hours walking through all the exhibits with my son. I loved every minute. Such a fun place

Melanie Stoner

This is one of the coolest things I have ever seen. It is so weird and mind blowing.

Addisen Robberts

Very interesting collection of items. The merry go round is amazing. Worth going to see once in a life time.

American Gods aside, this is a fantastic and nightmarish place to awake one's imagination and inner child! This is perhaps the closest thing you'll find to a real world version of Disney's the Haunted Mansion- (possibly) minus the ghosts of course! So long as you have a tolerance for disembodied music and comfortable walking shoes, enjoy the four hours you'll likely spend in this glorious mess.

Jodi McBeth

A lot to see. Definitely recommend! Kids would really enjoy, especially the carousels! Only reason I gave 4 was that it needs some cleaning.

Bill Gottschalk

I feel sorry for the people who have to work in this place. It is dark, dirty, oppressive, and uncomfortable to be in. The ticket vending area is very new and we'll kept, however the rest of the facility is run down and in real need of renovation. Even the infinity room is sketchy. In its hey day I imagine it was something (my mother spoke highly of it during her visit in the 1990's) but it's glory has faded dramatically. The orchestrans are many and varied, but the variety of music played is monotonous and borders on the madening - Tyler, who works there should know since he made a point to bring it up. The exhibits would be interesting if you could see them - did I say it was dark? I did enjoy the scrimshaw collection (what I saw of them), at which point we were being herded towards the exit. (NOTE: We arrived at 2:15pm and advised to move quickly to be done by 5pm. What they don't tell you is that they start turning off the lights about 4pm and herding you to the exits. Did I say it was dark? It definitely was when the lights were turned off.) You'll have to make your own mind up whether to visit. As for my group, we didn't finish sections 1 & 2 (in the dark), and were disappointed sufficiently to not consider coming back for section 3.

Maddie Colestock

We paid for section 1 & 2 and are so curious to see what was in section 3!! We spent at least 3 hours wandering around looking at all the cool things, the only thing that would have made it better would be if it was air conditioned. We started to get a little toasty by the end. It is stroller friendly, except for a small section in the first section where there is an attendant who will watch over your stroller while you go through.

Diana Byrns

Definitely more than 5 stars! Not just house on the rock. The house has the most comprehensive collections unimaginable! Super creative! Must, must visit! Need to visit all 3 sections. Need at least 2.5-hrs even if u are fast. $29.95 definitely worth it!

Karen Gomez

An amazing experience. Wonderful art. Be sure to spend the whole day if you get the tickets for all 3 sections. Also wear your comfortable walking shoes. It's a long walk.

Andrew Sean

The House on the Rock is by far one of the most unique places I have had the pleasure of visiting. I have wanted to come to House on the Rock since I first read about it years ago in the Atlas Obscura, and subsequently when I read of it again in American Gods. I finally visited in September 2019 for a friend's birthday, and was not disappointed. The property is almost indescribable. It is the product of one man's vision to build a house on the top of a rock in the middle of Wisconsin, magnified by the attention he received doing so into a strange web of mystery and allure. The world's largest carousel is mesmerizing. Truly mesmerizing. I don't think I understood the meaning of that word before I found myself completely lost on the layers of animals and strange figures dancing round and round in a sea of lights and energy. I would recommend that if you are considering a visit, stop putting it off and just go. House on the Rock is worth it. Every bit of it.

Robin Chartier

Its an interesting place with lots to see. Make sure to wear comfortable shoes because its a lot of walking. Took us about 4 1/2 hours, but we got tired and kinda overlooked a lot at the end. Best to plan on whole day to slowly go through each area, have lunch there, to rest at the snack areas and enjoy the beautiful outdoor gardens.

Penny De Antonio

WOW! AMAZING! This is definitely worth seeing. We spent 5 hours exploring. Plan on spending at least 4 hours here. There is a place to get food and drinks. They also have water available in several locations. So many things to look at. The house is amazing.

estirbune .

We thoroughly enjoyed our time at House on the Rock. Going through the attraction, there is always something to see around each corner as you wind your way around. The collections that have been a mass there are simply astounding! We did the total tour and it took us about 4 hours to go through. Be prepared to walk (comfy shoes are a MUST), it's low light in most places throughout, and although there is air-conditioning, it's a huge place so the air-conditioning struggles and you are walking a lot so you're bound to be hot. While the carousels are AMAZING and totally mind blowing, I loved the aviation area! The hot air balloons over head, airplanes and memorabilia that evoke the early 50s it was my favorite area of the house... But go see it for yourself and find your personal favorite!

Laura Denk

Neat attraction, but overpriced for what it is. The smell and bad music gave my husband and I headaches and we were ready to go by section 3. Many areas seemed to be falling apart. We will probably not visit again.

Jenny Gattie

Been here many times and u see something u missed last time. Will always love this place.

Interesting experience. Definitely something to do at least once. We did all the sections and we ended up exhausted. If anything I recommend to do section 1 and 2 which are the best. There are a lot of things going on while you walk around so take your time to look around. Some parts at the beginning are dark, I just used my phone and was able to see better. Overall I liked the place.

Chris Grenier

Cool place, but I think more effort should be made maintaining displays. Some of the musical machines were painful to listen to even if they were fascinating to watch.

Robin Chartier

This place was excellent!! I loved seeing all the collections. From cars to clowns (plenty of both) this place has it all. My wife and I really loved the carousel with it's seemingly infinite number of carousel creatures. It took us a couple of hours to get through and I know we didn't see everything. Staff was friendly and so were the guests. Definitely a must-see.

Von Hulio

My words can't do this place justice. If you go, you absolutely must see all 3 sections. Don't make the mistake I did, be sure to arrive with more than 4 hours to dedicate to seeing every last nook and cranny. I suggest getting there at noon or even 11am as they generally close at 5. Will be back as soon as I can.

Suzie Que

SO MUCH STUFF! We probably needed 6 more hours to absorb the history and fully grasp was Jordan was trying to accomplish. Some of the flooring was a little... creaky. Which got to be concerning. Had a reoccurring question-how do they clean everything? Worth the trip, once.

Linda

This is a magical place I am a collector I so enjoyed seeing the many thing and the home that this man with a great vision created , looking over the valley from the tree tops. And there is a certain energy in the wonderous atmosphere of the gardens it will be one of my favorite memories I will take into my old age

Penny De Antonio

WOW! AMAZING! This is definitely worth seeing. We spent 5 hours exploring. Plan on spending at least 4 hours here. There is a place to get food and drinks. They also have water available in several locations. So many things to look at. The house is amazing.

Colleen Taylor

It's a tourist trap, but a fun one. The second section is definitely worth the upcharge, but the third is more questionable. I enjoyed it, but it doesn't provide as much.

mark van handel

This place was a total surprise. Therye name does not do this justice. This is way more than a house in a rock. The house itself is worth the stop, but there collections are amazing. There is so much to explore I cannot capture it all in reviews. All the items are in great shape and amazing. The exhibits range from maritime collections of ships and whaling to carousel's that I could not have imagined. There is also a vast array of mechanical orchestra and band instruments that play music of the era. This is a must see. Plan a day trip. There is a restaurant half way through. Sit and relax for lunch and then continue on. If you stop for lunch there plan about five to six hours to see everything and not be rushed.

Kenneth Barkulis

For a family of 4 with kids under 12 this will cost nearly $100 for the full tour admission. As amazing as this place is, it has very little for children under 6 or 7. That said, the overall vibe in the self-guided tour is amazing. Every corner holds something amazing. From the amazing concept of a home, to the rediculously eclectic collection of s*"t this place holds so much wonder. Our family has made this a destination for decades. Plan on nearly 4 hours for the full tour with a nice lunch spot for pizza or a hot dog. The snack shop has cold beer and plenty of seating. The majority of the tour is not accessible to those using a wheelchair or scooter but accommodations have been made in recent years to allow for use of the major museum areas. Bring your good shoes because you'll get all your steps in.

Matthew Henry

I remember liking House on the Rock as a kid. As an adult I loved it. It's like a huge museum, without all that tedious "learning things." Even my teenagery 10-year-old told me, "I can't believe how awesome this is."

Evelene Wilson

Went to see the view of the changing of the leaves as seen on their website, but was informed when we arrived the trees had grown up so much it was no longer possible to see that type of view.....very disappointing! However, the World's Largest indoor Merry-go-round was SPECTACULAR!

Penny McIntyre

I went here in 1976 and have been wanting to go back ever since then. Today I got to go back and I loved it. Just as fun as the first time.

Sarah carnello

Take your vacation to new levels with a self guided tour through the architectural genius of Alex Jordan, Jr. I’m glad my 6 and 10 year old were able to experience this attraction. There’s a plethora of history and inconclusive exhibitions, and I believe kids should experience the world and it’s our job as parent and adults to guide them honestly and do our best to explain to them that sometimes things don’t make sense, but that it doesn’t make them bad or wrong. With that being said... Words cannot describe what went down during my four hour tour through the mind of a potentially disturbed genius. There is no flow, things don’t tie in the end, nothing seems finished but it’s marvelous. Thank goodness for the restaurant and beer stop two hours in. As stated above, I was in for four hours, but that was a bit rushed and could have easily been six or more.

Rhonda Hoornstra

I remember going here as a child. Finally got the chance to take my own children. They were just as amazed by everything here as I was. Favorites were the carousel, the whale, the music rooms and the infinity room. This place is so unique. A bit of a dreamland!

Mike Kolve

Enjoyed going here. The house is definitely like no other. If you do the complete self guided tour plan on 4-5 hrs

Brett Cahoon

Overwhelmingly diverse. Better than we expected it. Some staff could be more polite.

Heather Wilson

Very very cool place. However - very musty, dusty and mildew-y. There was no warning of this and as I have asthma and allergies I became very sick. I wish they would warn you of this so people like me could take proper precautions. I enjoyed the quirky treasures but the lack of cleaning or warning is unacceptable.

Lawrence Howard

5 stars is not enough to promote this unique space of history, late to viewing the American pickers episode, I love this exhibits behind the scenes. I will be visiting this place and come back visits there after.

Mark Medinger

Hauntingly beautiful. Whimsy and wonder are the main feelings at this charming and capricious attraction. Five miles of labrynth and never a full moment. The automated instruments, the eclectic collections, and much more are all part of the charm of this place. Let your mind run wild and you won't be disappointed.

Ron Rick

Incredible unique experience viewing rare collections from all over the world.

Seregnin X

Amazing place everyone should visit once in their life. Expect 4+ hours of walking and exploring. With places to rest. Many bathrooms throughout and a cafe at the halfway point. Educational and just entertaining. I wan to go back maybe without the kids so I can take in everything in my own time

Arta Stewart

One of those things that can be put on the bucket list places to visit. Love the infinite bridge, all his interesting collections, n I love his vision about his house. My my my the Whale, ceramic car, doll houses, and many more. An interesting house.

robin henderson

It's a really cool place to see, however it's very mildewy and diary a d needs some TLC badly. Lighting is needed throughout hosaxrial house so photos turn out better. I love the concept of the add one but it doesn't seem like it is being taken care of very well. Very dark and dusty and smelled.

Linn Krafjack

Great place to visit. Good food and clean bathrooms

Laura Clingman

I give this place twice as many stars if I could! And if you think you're going to get through this place and a couple of hours, give yourself twice as many of those as well! LOL! Absolutely fascinating! So much to see, take your time, you'll need it! There's even a cafeteria style restaurant in there somewhere, smelled great! A little tip, bring a water bottle, there are places to refill all over. Highly recommend this place for the whole family!

Dee Dredge

One of the most magical places on earth! Been going since I was a little girl. I love it!

Diane Darby

This used to be a much nicer experience. It's been turned into an overpriced tourist trap. Some of the original centerpiece attractions such as the mesmerizing carousels and the ballroom and animated musicians can now only be viewed at the end of an hours long walk at the highest tier admission price.

Andriy Serafyn

Such an awkward and awesome place. Probably the most bizarre and interesting house - museum I’ve ever been. Hidden Gem.

Karen Tracy

To say this place is unusual is an understatement. Interesting collections and mix and match architecture elements collected by Alex Jordan jr. Be sure to check out the carousel and infinity room of the house. Lots of levels and ramps to walk. Some narrow sections and stairs required to get through house.

Michael Walker

Dust, everywhere! Overall it is cool, but some of the exhibits are falling apart and there is dust everywhere. The place has a musky smell and I could not wait to get out of there and back into the fresh air. I had a headache the rest of the day from being in there. Also, someone needs to do some curation in there. The section with all the model ships, half of them were falling apart and/or dry rotting. Like I was saying, overall it is cool, but needs a good cleaning.

Kathy Shinstine

Absolutely amazing!! Where comfortable shoes and plan to stay awhile (3-4 hours) has 2 food service places and lots of indoor and outdoor seating. Gorgeous views and gardens!!

Ramona Warner

Crazy place. Very intersting. The guy whom built this place was intelligent and a little crazy. He has a bit of everything in that museum. Too much of some things.

Mario Martinez

If you plan to make the trip I suggest you to get there with plenty of time. Its 5 stars for what all the great things within the house. Cranky employees but that didn't change my experience. And do yourself a favor and buy all 3 sections bring cash since there's tokens you can use for entertainment purposes. The gift shop was not over priced at all. I loved it and plan to go again before the summer is over.

Amy Blackwood

Words cannot describe how amazing this place is. I was in complete awe the entire time

Peak roadside Americana. Everything is over the top, not super well maintained and sorta has this weird catering to 70s roadside aesthetics, but that's all part of the charm. It's creepy unintentionally but genuinely strikes awe again and again. Pictures and descriptions don't do it justice. Absolutely essential for any road trip in the area.

Becca-Linn Lea

Very fun place with something for everyone. As a musician my favorite parts were all the automated music rooms. It is pretty dark in most of the rooms.

Jared Jones

Nice tour, like a maze you can't get lost in. There was a picture of a cow I didn't like, but otherwise pretty good.

Andrea Vitale

There are no words that I can even use to describe this place. It truly is unique and you just have to see it for yourself. If you live in Wisconsin, it should be on your list of places to explore. Or if you’re not from Wisconsin, it should still be on your list of places to explore.

James Webster

Wear comfortable shoes start early there is a huge amount to see. Wonderful place worth the effort to get to it

Xerxes Griffen

well its pretty weird but i loved the experience so 5 stars

Jeff Pribble

Have been several times and never ceases to be amazing. There are many steps so keep that in mind if you are mobility impaired. Only down side this visit was several of the most popular exhibits were being rehabbed. Could have done a couple at a time instead of taking them all out.

Rebecca Stewart

Great place to visit on a rainy day or ANY day! So much to see! I can't wait to go back!

Diego G

Beautiful inside and out. Great place to go and explore. Make sure to get tokens to appreciate the experience.

Diane N Matt Oswalt

So many things to look at, you can use tokens to play the music, or use at the gift shop, and I really enjoyed that. My husband did not care for it but I did. Depending on what you like lol. The third section was okay. The only thing that was really cool was the carousels, and the knife show room, other than that I would probably only pay to see the 2 sections. Pictures are Not in order

Nicole Dabros

We loved this unique museum! If you do all three sections leave A LOT of time as it took us five and a half hours to get through it all. Also, it is tricky at some points to get a stroller through so bringing little ones may not be a good idea.

Dean Gustin

My favorite place in all of Wisconsin, well worth the trip , so unique truly nothing else like it!

Bill Marcell

My 5 year old daughter and I went there a few ago. She surprisingly walked the entire 3 hour self tour. No complaints from either of us. Very interesting and unique place. Took our time to enjoy all the attractions and displays. Great food available as well. My daughter, now 8 years old, is so excited to go back. We are planning a trip there this month :)

Julie Hunt

Pretty cool. Lots of oddities, cool amazing architecture, history and fun. I gave it 4 stars, only because it was very crowded. I'm not very good with that many people.

Chuck Ditello

Great place to visit lots to see just check out some of the pictures. It takes a bout 3 hours to do the hole tour or you can do just part of it. It's in three sections the house is the one of the best parts and the first section to see the second section is the streets of yesteryear. The third has the famous carousel in it plus alot more including the dollhouse and doll collection and the circus collection they are all a must see if you have never been there.

Dianne Bagley

Omg! By far, one of the coolest museums ever! I'm going back, next time I'm in Wisconsin. A must see for anyone.

Little Dee

We travel 3 hours every couple years to visit. It's so worth it. What an amazing collection! If you haven't gone you really should!
