What a fantastic find. Very knowledgeable staff. Beautiful grounds. Besides the Revolutionary War fort itself, there are outbuildings, gardens, picnic area and a large cemetery featuring stones from the 18th and 19th centuries. Down a winding road several miles off of the interstate is Prickett's Fort State Park. Just when you think you've missed the turn-off and you're lost, there's the parking lot for the Visitor's Center. Prickett's Fort is a wonderful re-creation of a 1774 fort, complete with blockhouses, a trading post with handmade items for sale, meeting house, several living-cabins, tinsmith, and a working blacksmith's shop. Very educational. There's a 2+ mile walking and bike trail that goes off of the upper parking lot, and boat launch area down by the lower parking lot. The Visitor's Center also has a nice gift shop. Highly recommended.

It is wonderful having a Prickets Fort so near that I can go anytime. There is a wide variety of special events there that brings music, plays, and time period reinactments. From there, the rails to trails goes north to Morgantown and south to Fairmont. The Fairmont end has a long tunnel to walk through that stays cool in the hot summer. There is also good fishing, a lot of birds, beautiful flowers, and an old graveyard. Go and explore, have a picnic, and relax.

Nice place to visit, as well as see and hear relevant history. Thorougly enjoyed observing and hearing from the blacksmith. He was quite knowledgable.

Halle Edwards

I went for the Candlelight Christmas event at the park this past weekend. Even though it was dark and I couldn't see all the buildings, it was still a great place. The main buildings were decorated as they would have been in the 18th century and lit only by candles. There was a guide in each of the buildings to tell you all about life in that time period. Everyone was very knowledgeable and friendly. I especially liked that this was a "hands-on" park so you could really interact with your surroundings. In addition to the fort and additional houses nearby, there is also a museum telling you a bit about the history of the area. The price is also very reasonable. The entrance fee is only $8 and you get full access to the grounds. If you like bicycling, the rail trail runs right through the park, as well. Overall, this was an enjoyable experience I would definitely recommend. I look forward to going back and seeing the place during the daylight too!

James Borrell
