Had a really great time visiting this museum with my 19 year old granddaughter. I have always enjoyed reading Poe and at this museum it gave me a lot of information on his writings. I learned so much about his life in general. This museum is in the oldest building in Richmond. So awesome to know that Richmond is his birth place! The staff there was very friendly and knowledgeable. She gave us a map to follow which helped a lot also.
Absolutely astonishing museum dedicated to one of the greatest poets there was. The layout is straightforward and simple. It is very difficult to miss anything there is to see. There have many artifacts from Poe's life. They range from a childhood bed to small lock of his hair. Not much more to say than that. If you are in the area it is very much worth a visit!
Really cool exhibits of Poe’s life with various artifacts! Worth stopping in while visiting Richmond!
Very accessible and interesting for adults and grade school children who like to read. It's not very big, but had some really nice historical relevance to the city of Richmond. Although, it is not a Poe residence, it really feels appropriate for the purpose, especially since he spent a significant amount of his life in Richmond. The staff are very friendly and helpful. You can easily complete the entire tour within an hour, and spend extra time reading in the library, and enjoying the courtyard.
This is well worth the money! We went on one of the guided tours, I can't remember what the guide's name was, but my husband said he thinks it was David. He was absolutely amazing! I LOVE Edgar Allan Poe, but this man told me things even I didn't know. You could tell he really loves his job, and he was extremely knowledgeable. I would definitely pay to go again, it was that good. The museum cats are so friendly and nice also, we loved them
Amazing tour guide! Well priced! Hidden literature-gem of Richmond!
I found this much more interesting than I thought it would be. The unanswered questions surrounding Poe's death were very intriguing. It's a beautiful setting, too, especially at the holidays as the garden was decorated. Evidently you can book this location for events and weddings.
staff is sweet . love the two cats that live there! excellent little museum, short and to the point facts! love the gift shop as well
I love the history of this place, and the great staff! A must see kind of place!
If you are a Edgar Allen Poe fan this place has so much information on his life and great details into his work. Took about an hour to view and read everything in the displays.
It's such wonderful local history and it's so close by
I'm a huge fan of Edgar Allan Poe. This museum offers an intimate and thorough look into his life. You can see what influenced him when writing his works.
We went on a weekday and it was wo fearful. None of the crowds that some others complained of.
Very interesting and informative. Well organized and worth the visit.
Pretty small, but very informative. The parking lot is tiny. Find somewhere to park and walk to it!
Worth a visit whether you live in town or just visiting. You walk through multiple small buildings and a courtyard and if you're lucky you'll get to meet the two resident black cats.
I came in not knowing anything about Edgar Allen Poe and I left feeling like I knew him personally. The tour guide was one of the best that I have ever had. He makes great eye contact, spoke the entire time, and kept it interesting. I would recommend it.
I highly recommend a trip here if you are even the slightest bit curious. It was very interesting and well maintained. We were also greeted by the cats that live here, so it made our visit that much more special. The gift shop has some great items! I'm very happy this place exists and I look forward to my next visit.
Awesome museum with lots of interesting Poe memorabilia including old furniture he used to use and old editions of his works. Learned a lot of new stuff about him here.
Amazing museum. Exhibits very well displayed. Buildings and garden created a perfect ambiance for the Poe experience. Price was very reasonable. A definite "must see" while in Richmond.
Come on its POE! 10000 STARS
Amazing little museum with a ton of information on Poe. Had no idea this was just down the street from me. Learned a lot. The garden was the best part. So beautiful and there's a cute black cat that roams around and will let you pet if you approach nicely. Came here for free as part of Time Traveler's Weekend.
You have to go if you have not gone before. It is a self guided tour, but the gentleman at the cash register was telling us stories about Poe and was very informative. Well worth the 8 dollars to get in.
Depressing yet interesting... Definitely check it out if you're ever in Richmond
This was a fun experience! The tour was fun and our tour guide was awesome!! The cats were def a bonus for this crazy cat lady!
Amazingly historic place! It was really cool to be able to explore his home and see items he actually used.
Great museum! A couple nice cats, so much information about Edgar Allen Poe, many items from his life. Parking is on the street and close.
What a fascinating place to visit!!! I cannot overstate how intimate and personal the experience is. Strongly recommend!!!
Very interesting. Beautiful too.
Very good and informational. Totally worth the few bucks to visit and learn a little more history.
Great little museum and a must-see for any tour of Richmond. Maybe an hour or do worth of material. It's about one guy so there is only so much to say, so one would be smart to make a day of it and go to a few museums with this being one of them.
Very nice little museum lots of Poe artifacts and snippets of information about his life that one may not necessarily learn elsewhere. Definitely paints a different picture than our 6th grade English textbooks. If you enjoy his many works, this is a great place to pay homage to one of America's great authors!
Check out their Unhappy Hours in the summertime for music, food, and booze. They also give abbreviated tours of the buildings. The museum is spread into several different buildings around a beautiful courtyard. It's definitely a unique style for a museum!
Great little place multiple buildings all kinds of old Poe artifacts
One of my favorite authors was born here. This museum has 2 black cats that meander about the grounds. I am amazed this museum was founded in 1922 and they took the pains to retrieve artifacts from his childhood home before it was demolished.
Loved the reading and the grounds.
It was pretty okay, I wish they had the raven enamel pins in stock.
Very fun experience. The museum has managed to cobble together quite a collection of odds and ends from Poe's life, such as his childhood bed, despite the home he lived in as a child having been destroyed many years ago. You could breeze through in half an hour, or you could stay much longer enjoying Poe's works in the reading room. I loved the live reading of The Raven in the enchanted garden. Very fun, creepy little place, definitely worth a visit.
What a cool find! Especially if you are a Poe enthusiast! Neat set up, different buildings in use to tell each portion of his life. Nice little reading room and gift shop, even two black cats wandering the courtyard that say hello! Small parking lot on side of building that blessedly free, too!
I absolutely love this meusam bit then I went up in a dramatic price while you still have to pay in the gift shop.
Loved the tour. Staff was friendly and the exhibits were informative. If you are looking for something interesting to do, definitely something to add to your stops!
Rate museum built around 3 buildings and a Courtyard to discuss the phases of Poe's life excellent
Awesome experience, getting to know a bit better my favorite author
Amazing details about his life. quite fun but a little small. Try to get the tour.
Such a beautiful place. Full of history. Located in historic Shockoe Bottom. I'd advise anyone coming to visit Richmond & who has a love of his art to visit the museum. Also great for a wedding venue.
My friend and I have been wanting to come to the EAP Museum for over a year and sadly to say, we were a bit disappointed. I'm not sure if it was because of the birthday bash and ongoing renovations, but I don't feel like we had the experience we were expecting. For an $8.00 admission I had anticipated to see more than what was available. There may have been an oversight on our part with the details of the museum but we were able to walk the entire grounds in 30 minutes or so. Parts of the museum were nice, but sadly I don't feel like the entire experience would be worth another visit in the future.
Very interesting exhibit. I learned a lot from it. I would go back again for Unhappy Hour.
Facilities really taken care of very nicely. The tour guide went into Poes life in great detail.
Good variety of artifacts and editions printed during his lifetime.
It's very interesting place; went with a date and she enjoyed it a lot. They had a public reading of Poe's writing while we were there. If you're in Richmond and looking for something to do, this wouldn't be a bad place to stop.
Small museum but worth the small admission charge. I discovered a lot more about Poe than I ever learned before. The reading room on the second floor of the main building was nice, it would have been nice to have been able to sit down and read but too much traffic in a cramped space. But very well put together exhibits and artifacts
Cool place for Poe's fan, you can see his living space and chronological journey of his life. There's also 2 black cats on the property as well that were born and raised there, ironically neat!
If you have enjoyed Edgar Allan Poe as much as I have, you will love this museum. There are 3 different buildings and a garden area to explore. There are multiple examples of original manuscripts as well as some of his actual furniture. There is even a gimmick like taking a picture posing in a coffin for tourists. Poe never lived here but there is much information about the people who have touched Poe’s life. One of my favorite parts of the tour is that there are 2 black cats named Edgar and Pluto that seemingly follow you everywhere. You can either go on a tour or go by yourself which I recommend. One of the buildings is filled with souvenirs which top off the visit.
Very cool museum, affordable, and is in a neat neighborhood. Great displays and a variety of items whether you are into Poe or simply enjoy history.
Poe's deep connection to the city of Richmond is almost unknown outside of the local area. While no one can know for sure, it does really seem possible that the inspiration for his greatest works were found in this city. The museum is excellent. However, although they try to help, the 19th century architecture is difficult for the mobility challenged.
It was amazing! Beautiful and very well kept! The cats, Edgar and Pluto made it even more realistic!
I was only in Richmond for 24 hours a couple weeks ago and had only a few hours to spare before heading home. I decided to visit here. The staff were friendly, though really, the only person I interacted with was the greeter in the lobby/gift shop. It wasn’t crowded when I went in on a weekday afternoon and I was able to enjoy the entire museum in about 2 hours. I learned quite a bit, too. If you’re in Richmond and looking for something to do, just go. You’ll enjoy it.
Very cool! Lots of artifacts from his life and great information
They don't have guided tours, although they allow you to walk along the grounds. It's a reasonable price for what you get and the gift shop is ok, they don't have very many cool items but there is some stuff that is good. As far as the tour goes it was a cool tour and you get to see a lot of cool stuff, however only some of it is authentic stuff that Edgar Allen Poe owned or used. Overall nice place to visit if you are in the area and don't have anything else to do.
Been here several times. I love it. I feel like Poe is one of the most underrated authors ever. His contributions to various genres is unparalleled. This museum, tucked away in Richmond’s oldest residence, attempts to capture the scope of his contribution and breadth of his talent, combined with the mystery of his death.
Great setting. Great guide and displays.
A great place to learn about the Great Edgar Allen Poe. You can see all sorts of memorabilia, paintings, busts, and more. A very nice place to learn more than just cursory info about him.
Although Poe did not stay in the building the museum is located in, the museum is awesome! From the library, to the house interior, to the gift shop and the portrait of Poe drawn in real human blood! This place is second only to his home in Baltimore to the true Poe-phile.
I believe this was the location of Poe's girlfriend; his house he lived in is located in Baltimore. This location has some interesting features and is great if you simply wanted to explore old buildings that have the old skeleton keys (I'm not from the east coast. . .) Though photography is not permitted, I did snap one of the sculpture.
Small museum but contains great information and artifacts of Poe.
Do you like Edgar Allen Poe? Do you like poetry? Do you like suspense? Do you like horror? Do you like history? If yes, you will love it. Pick up a book if you dare from the gift shop. Also a Pokémon stop (side note). You can get through depending upon your reading speed in 1 hour.
Interesting and historic museum. Somewhat spooky with black cats roaming around and creaky doors on every old building and room.
A little creepy but very interesting learned a lot
Was a fan of Edgar Allan Poe all through Junior High and high school read almost everything that he wrote love it love Museum everyone should see it
Great small museum! Definitely worth the trip. Expect it to last 20-45 minutes.
It's a great place to visit with your family. Or just a day out! Awesome!
Incredibly fascinating and in a unique, very old part of town.
Beautiful, historic, and well laid out.
Absolutely loved the museum! Took the 11am guided tour and learned so much! Definitely suggest taking the guided tour, there is a lot of information being given, a personal touch of research given by the guide, and Mr. Knight even recited experts from poems and stories based on the era in Poe's life. We really enjoyed our time and took some great pictures.
Let me start this by stating, I LOVE EDGAR ALLAN POE. If Edgar Allan Poe were running a race, I'd be a the finish line with my big glittery GO EDGAR ALLAN POE sign and probably even a matching t-shirt. I wrote my college thesis on Poe, I've read countless stories, and have always been an admirer. So with that said, here are my thoughts on The Poe Museum: It was a little smaller than I thought (or maybe than I had hoped for) but the person I went with couldn't believe that I expected them to have any more stuff than they did. The things that they did have were really cool though (vest, socks, desk, chair, bed, etc) The buildings were pretty cool - old with lots of charm. The courtyard was definitely a huge selling point, it was absolutely gorgeous and I can see why The Poe Museum is a popular wedding spot.
Love this place! Pluto and Poe (the two kitties that were born there) are so sweet. It's a self guided tour and when we went it was very quiet so we basically had it to ourselves. The gift shop is awesome and has reasonable prices.
Really cool to do, doesn't take long at all. Less than an hour to read everything and look around.
Always a great stopover to see one of America's most renowned writers. This housing complex is a quick peek into the life of Poe and family, and has a cute little gift shop. Watch out for the black cats- and please don't write on the shrine's face.
The people working there are super kind, the tour guides great at storytelling and keeping things moving. It's very interesting to see many objects of the time and how people lived. A tragic story.
Great history of this author. The buildings are great also. If I read more, i'd give it 5 stars. Great price for seniors
A great tribute to Edgar Allan Poe! Wonderful artifacts on display
Pretty cool place with actual artifacts and two awesome black cats
Like it better before the remodel and got rid of half the museum.
Recommended the guided tour. Also keep an eye out for Pluto and Edgar wandering around the property.
If you like Edgar Allen Poe, then the place is fantastic! Lots of history about EAP, learned lots of things I didn't know about him. They have quite of bit of his old items. Built around the oldest stone manor in Richmond, they do a good job of spacing the area out. If your lucky like we were you may even get to pet Edgar and Pluto the black cats of the manor.
Very cool, very interesting, very unique sort of museum. It sheds a lot of light on Poe's life, the struggles he had, and his works (both before and after his death). Interesting type of museum, it's a small place, only requiring a half hour to explore it all. Definitely recommend when in the area.
Love the curator. Was a cool time there. Went with an 8 year old and she enjoyed it. Interesting guy to learn about. Very small museum but was quality for the $6 entrance fee.
A fantastic museum for Poe lovers and those who want to learn a little more about the Poet. There are even discounts for military and students etc. I highly recommend a visit.
Even better than the first time I visited. A must see for any serious Poe fan.
Worth going at least once! Fun displays and they do an good job on their displays and the quality of the items they present. They also have really fun themed "unhappy hours" on Thursdays during the summer!
Much history about the author. Cool old buildings.
Full of Information and beautiful grounds with a beautiful garden and 2 kitties edgar and pluto (only Pluto is featured in the photos edgar seemed to be very uninterested in our presence.
Smaller than I expected (three buildings, but each is only one room). However, I found it well worth the $8 to step into the past and uncover the truth about Poe! The staff was very kind, and loved the friendly cats onsite. Gift shop is great - options for Poe fanatics and museum buffs alike.
Very interesting/cool place! We loved it!
It is a small museum but very enjoyable. They don't have yours but have very informative displays
One of the best tour guides I've ever had
It was amazing. Very informative and a beautiful place to spend your day.
Nice little museum and gift shop. Don't miss if a Poe fan. Cats were awesome.
I will always love visiting here. It is always a pleasure. They remodeled it from the first time I was there and it was so much better. We had fun and would do it again.
A must see if your near Richmond. I've been three times and learn more each time. If your a Poe fan this is a can't miss museum.
This will forever be one of my favorite places in the planet.
This museum was so cool. Diamond in the ruff and one of the top places that my Girl Scout Troop had on their must see list. We were even able to buy our tickets online ahead of time. If you go you also need to check out their two cats who live on site.
Really detailed exhibits and artifacts. Good information about Poe's life.
Self-guided tour. Beautiful garden, complete with 2 black cats! Many personal artifacts, art pieces, detailed stories, interactive exhibit. Unique experience, I highly recommend it to anyone who loves Poe!
The Edgar Allan Poe Museum is a wonderful place to to visit while in Richmond. You will learn a lot of information about Edgar Allen Poe and see a lot of original works from him. There are two Black Cats that live on the grounds there that are extremely friendly. The gift shop here is small but has a lot of raven items here. The staff here are extremely friendly and very knowledgeable.
Very interesting with many unique items on display. We greatly enjoyed our visit.
A nice intimate look into Poe's life on a somewhat otherwise historic set of buildings from his past. Didn't see the cats but that's okay I suppose, I've got one of my own. If you're in town and a fan of literature this is a must-see.
If you love to read definitely stop by! Rooms get a little crowded but overall was a very nice experience.
Seeing the oldest house in Richmond VA still standing was neat. Had me wondering why Poe was in Baltimore when he died.
Oh Edgar, So tragic of a life....nice little museum ,but Not his childhood home. Oldest surviving building of Edgar time in Richmond. Worth the stop, cool personal artifacts of his.
What an awesome collection on Edgar Allan Poe. The guided tour is fabulous!
Very cool little Museum, I had a great time so did my Fiance. The only reason im giving this 4
A quaint spot, perfect for a lazy afternoon. There are a few out buildings with artifacts and legends to tempt the mind. With the few pence for entrance.
Poe grew up in Richmond and started his career there. This is the largest collection of genuine Poe memorabilia anywhere, and a highly informative exhibit, displayed in part in the oldest surviving building in Richmond. I especially enjoyed the occasional Easter eggs of Poe trivia and wry humor you can find in the various displays. If you're a fan of Poe then this is a no-brainier. Admission is less than $10.
Intimate museum with some great artifacts, information, and a Poe reading room. Perfect stop for any Poe fan.
A quick museum worth checking out once. Not very big and you won't be here long. Definitely learned some new things about Poe - but I wish they would have expanded on Poe's mother. Her position in society meant Poe ended up in a rich household but they breezed over her. Some of the "artifacts" were artwork inspired by Poe that weren't historical and felt more like filler. The guy was weird enough, I feel like they have enough material to do something more interesting than that.
Incredibly gratifying trip to the Poe Museum this afternoon. This place isn't huge, but it packs a punch, and completing a guided tour will make you feel like a Poe expert -- cheers to our wonderful guide, Chris, who was supremely knowledgable and engaging. My group and I agreed that we walked away from the museum better informed about Poe, more appreciative of his work, and reflective about how his work fits into our country's literary history. What more could you want out of a museum? Can't recommend this place enough for a must-do Richmond attraction!
THOROUGHLY enjoyed a quiet, self-paced tour (read: I took all the time I wanted) through this museum. Tons of treasures, loads of information to read and discover. Loved the gift shop - and the attendant was knowledgeable about the area / gave good directions and guidance. Highly recommend.
LOVED IT!!! GREAT PLACE FOR ANYONE WHO LOVES EDGAR ALLEN POE
A great way to spend time in Richmond. The museum is housed in 3 separate buildings. There is an enclosed garden. Learned new things about Poe.
A little smaller than I had hoped, but very well kept artifacts and an immaculate setting conspire to give you a real feel for the author.
Love museums & this one starts with the oldest house in Richmond - awesome. I learned a lot I didn't know, enjoyed the large collection of all things Poe.
Quirky quick and interesting. $ 8 dollars for adults. Took about a half hour. The black cats are awesome.
The Edgar Allen Poe Museum is a great Richmond stop. The location is right near downtown Richmond. The museum is in the oldest house in Richmond Free parking Affordable tickets Beautiful enchanted garden Great layout of three different buildings to explore and experience Fun fact: you can catch unhappy hour on Friday’s #PapstPath
Awesome. Small and very interesting
Pretty cool place to visit. Docent very knowledgeable!
The museum was closed on New Year's. However, nothing on their website or location stated they were closed. Was passing through from out of town and really wanted to view this museum. Very disappointed that everything said they were open but they were not. It was New Year's day so understandable but wasted money on parking only to not see anything. They should consider being more active on their social media so people can know their calendar.
After 30 years in Richmond, I finally went to the Poe "museum" (notice the quotes?) and was..... DISAPPOINTED. To keep this brief: Poe never lived in these structures, there are very few artifacts directly related to Poe (and the ones they display are so unimportant and uninteresting), and $9 is ridiculously expensive for this lame experience. The best part of this trip - I kid you not - was petting the two black cats the "museum" has on premises.
An interesting collection of Poe memorabilia and a number of captions that explain the difficult lift that Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) led. Author of the famous The Tell-Tale Heart and The Pit and the Pendulum and many others, the museum shows several artifacts and items from his life.
I love macabre so this was great to me
Great experience! Very informative and a cool little insight into Poe's life!
Amazing! Our guide was incredibly engaging and informative. Enjoyed every minute of the tour.
If I had to play to get in I would call it a 2 or 1.5 star. The intent of the museum and the information is great but it is definitely lacking. Theres a point when "nothing fancy" becomes "nothing much going on".
Wonderfully spooky. There was even a black cat in the walking garden who was totally aloof. Probably possessed by Poe himself...
My girls and I loved this museum. The staff and grounds were amazing. The grounds has significant historical clout and should be commemorated for generations to come.
I love this museum. The art is so beautiful
Lovely place and the staff is really nice. Make sure you go for the guided tour!
Really cool place to visit. Very interesting, learned things I never knew.
Poe neophytes and casual acquaintances will find much insight into Poe's life and works. More serious students and fans won't find anything revelatory, but seeing artifacts from the author's life is wonderful nonetheless.
Small, but very interesting and well done. My grandkids enjoyed it and we learned a lot.
The museum was very cool and the staff was very knowledgeable. Glad we made the trip.
Thought it was overpriced for what it was worth. Of course if you are a literally scholar and especially love Mr Poe’s works then you will be fascinated with the things displayed but if you are an average joe with no interest then it will be an overpriced experience for a 10-20min walk around at best. If you are a tourist, they have some cool stuff in the gift shop so even if you didn’t pay admission for the tour you can still get some cool souvenirs if that’s what you like.
This was a beautiful short stop. Very informative, very cramped, through no fault of the places own. Just a lot of information, but we never felt rushed. There were some guided tours, but we opted for a self tour. The only reason I give this a four is it was really short.
We had a very nice time during the Time Travelers Weekend. The staff was friendly And knowledgeable. We look forward to returning and sending our friends your way.
This is just one of those places! If you are Poe, its a must, if you don't know Poe ... you will not be as excited. The Oldest House in RVa, and a lot of cool/odd things to see. They do have a guided tour, but my timing did not allow. They appear to rent for special occasions. The only thing cooler than the two cats was the charming Kitten in the gift Shop!
Cool vibe! Go for Unhappy Hour!
This is an interesting read, must give this place a little bit more time to read all the information around the museum. Kids might get bored easily here.
This cute little museum is worth the visit. It has a lot of really interesting items regarding Mr. Poe and the two little kitties are adorable. The only qualm I have is that no pictures were allowed to be taken within the exhibits.
