REVIEWS OF George Washington's Mount Vernon IN Virginia

TragicRushFan .

I hadn't been here since the 1970's. Some of it I remembered, but most I had not. It's so beautiful! To sit on the front porch and feel the breezes off the Potomac was wonderful and serene, as nothing has been built to obscure the view. There was no museum then, nor a restaurant. Thoroughly enjoyed Mount Vernon. Learning history is wonderful!

Hannah Degn

This is an awesome place to visit. The views are breathtaking! The estate is huge which makes for a great day or half day trip. I love hearing from Mrs. Washington! She does an incredible job. They also have live animals which are so cute and fun to see. George Washington is also buried here which is powerful. There’s usually a line to wait to get into the house and you go by ticket time so make sure you are there when it’s your turn and plan accordingly to see the other things on the property.

Mount Vernon is a must see when in Washington DC. The ancestral home of George and Martha Washington is open for tours, led by knowledgeable guides. They answer questions, point out period pieces, explain the rooms you are seeing and tell the historical settings. On the grounds, there are many buildings to explore, people to interact with who are portraying the people who lived there in General, then President Washington's time. I had a wonderful conversation with a house servant named Catherine. Now remember, she was actually living there during President Washington's time, and answered as such. Take in everything you see, listen carefully, ask questions and enjoy every moment.

Samuel Young

This place was amazing! This will be an all day event. Make sure to wear comfortable shoes. So many things to see and it was all worth it. Expect to drop $100 between tickets, food, and gifts from the gift shop. So much history in one place and it is absolutely beautiful!

JD Odom

What a great place to visit if you are a fan U.S. history! Washington's house and grounds are beautiful and very well maintained. Most (not all) of the tour guides are very knowledgeable and have the ability to tell great stories and answer visitor's questions. There is so much history to experience at Mount Vernon. Sometimes there are historical characters walking the premises who interact with visitors. You can learn about slave labor (and even specific African Americans) that lived on the plantation. They have a great museum, a 4D movie and hands on history lessons/ activities for all ages. If you get hungry there is a very nice food court you can visit. Even the gift shop has one of a kind souvenirs. Mount Vernon is a must do if you are in the DC area.

The grounds and Mansion are wonderful to see. my suggestion is that you go during a time when the school children are not visiting. I'm sure you'd have more time to enjoy the grounds and the mansion without the pressure of several hundred children. it's important for them to have the experience, but it's not necessary for you to share it with them.

James Schuck

Photos are from the annual Craft Faire which includes not only homemade baked goods and hand-hewn furniture but also battle reenactments and an Army camp setup you can walk through. Something for everyone at Mount Vernon!

Doemi Hernandez

14 bucks to get in with a military discount. The grounds are beautiful but you can't take any pictures inside the house. I liked that as you walk along, there was someone there to tell you about the rooms except for the guy who was standing outside who just stood there and said "if you gave questions, ask." You can spend a few hours here and there is plenty of parking. The distillary is worth a look too and the entry is included in your ticket. Whiskey bottle is very expensive and they do not offer a tasting.

James

I've been to a lot of historic homes, this is one of the most well done I have seen. Plenty of very knowledgeable people to explain what everything was. You are able to get very close to the rooms. Well preserved and excellent history lessons.

James Phillips Ingress: ArmyMajor

First President's House, 20 minute tour of the home. Just as important, the Education Center. It should really be called 'Awesome Museum'. Make time in your schedule to see it. Dont come after 4! You will Not be able to see it all. Mondays (non holiday Mondays) are the best day to come. And First thing in the mornings will also beat the rush. I recommend visiting Mount Vernon.

Clark Hall

The guys were great, and the grounds were wonderful. What an awesome man you must of been.

Robert Albright

Amazing time, I would recommend getting a tour for everything. Get here early to beat the crowds, the gift shops have really good stuff.

Stephanie Powell

Fantastic place! Be prepared to walk. The tour of the house is fairly quick but the guides are knowledgeable and willing to answer questions. Love all of the displays of houses and facilities as well as the informative walk through interactive center. Well kept facility with easy parking. Bring a snack and be prepared for a bag check.

Jennifer Fanning

Excellent farm, you can really know much more about the life of George Washington, spend a very pleasant time in this place, also if you have a guide you can know much better the place, great.

Dawn Miskar

It was hot. Other than that, the kids and I were very happy with the experience. It was just so hot the farm and tomb parts were awful. The animals were crowding into the shaded parts of their pens (yes there was enough, no animal abuse). I definitely recommend.

Amanda Williams

We enjoyed a range of their small plates which we shared, along with the sword stack and a dessert each. Every dish was presented beautifully, the flavours were excellent and the prices are very good value. The main meals at neighbouring tables looked lovely. The wine list was extensive.

liz Hortensia

Nicely preserved historical site. Maybe that is why I could sens how hard it could have been to be a slave. Nice tour.

Brenda Bee

My visit here was AMAZINGLY breath taking & simply memorable... My friend and I walked the grounds for hours admiring garden after garden. The mature trees are majestic to say the least and the history they represent it almost unbelievable. Thank you PaPi R. for bringing us there!

tammy iverson

Staff was AWESOME. Info for each room, but not too much. Much to see and learn. Could easily spend the whole day here.

Adam Riemer

We had a great time here and learned a lot about George Washington. It was interesting to learn about how he always wanted things that were more impressive because they were expensive. It makes him seem very pretentious as opposed to what we read about in the history. The key to the bastille is really cool and the property is stunning.

Heidi Craft

Wonderful place. Beautiful restoration. So much history!

John Osorio

Beautifully kept grounds. Really enjoyed the house tour and attention to detail.

Allison Siegel

This is a must see place. It was amazing to see everything preserved in time. Seeing Washington's grace was really amazing. They also have a memorial for the slaves that were buried on the graves which was an eye opener to my 11 year old daughter. The home was beyond neat to go through, discovered about 40% of the items in the house were actually owned by the Washington's. Make sure to check out the educational center you'll be blown away by the things you learn in there!

Diana Erwin

Fantastic place. $20 to tour the house. Numerous outbuildings and other sights to see. Wear good shoes and be prepared to walk up and down long hills. Not a great place for wheelchairs or strollers. Interesting video and museum after the tour.

Claudia Powner

Excelente experience. The 4D movies was great, the tour guide was informative, friendly and funny; the gift shop was filled with lots of fun goodies. They also have a a wonderful Children's Place with wonderful women working the area. They had a story time, play time, and arts and crafts time. If we lived close we would have a season pass! History is wonderful, especially American history.

Michael Cowan

Loved the visit to see Mt Vernon. Great place to see how the first US president lived. Lots to see and people to ask questions. I recommend taking the boat from the wharf up the Potomac. Even though there were quite a few people there it did not seem crowded. Prepare to spend a whole day here exploring. Will visit again.

Andrew Rousselle

Was here as a kid so was nice to go back and see it again. Obviously the historic side hasnt changed but have made it more commercial which I'm not a huge fan. Food court, shops, etc. Still a great place to spend the day walking the grounds and learning a little history.

Karen Dembeck

Our family has been to Mt. Vernon on numerous occasions. Each visit has been educational, enjoyable and moving. It is a beautiful peaceful place to visit and you always come away with something new you learned. Plan a visit, soon! It's well worth it!!!

David G. Salvas

Had the best time. Worth spending a few hours looking around the property. Only reason it got a 4 star is because the staff in the shops were rude and assumed me and my wife couldn't afford the nicer Jewelry. It was her birthday and we were looking for a nice piece. They completely turned us off to the idea. The cashier lady was a tall red head and wouldn't let my wife hold a ring to take a closer look. She works in Jewelry and simply wanted to take a closer look. Even when I asked a security guard where the bathrooms were, he acted like I was dumb for not seeing a sign around the corner. The staff at the mansion were great, friendly and knowledgable.

KJ Martinez

A trip we’ll never forget. Seeing the home of the Father of Our Country was exciting and breathtaking. Be sure to tour the gardens and out buildings. So much history to walk through.

Kristian Menegon

Amazing piece of history! Everything is preserved wonderfully! I highly recommend visiting as there is so much to see all along the property. Groupon made it affordable for a family of 5 to visit.

SCOTT BAKER-GILDENMEISTER

the manor of the first ever united states president has been reduced to a tourist's attraction that more likely than not is filled to the brim with a group of middle school students going to washington dc for a school trip

Melissa Braaten-Krueger

We really enjoyed our time at Mount Vernon. I suggest allowing a good 4 hours if not more for your visit. We could've been there longer but it was warm and we were pooped! The workforce is helpful and knowledgeable. Obviously they are passionate about their jobs! I have a suggestion: I noticed much confusion about/around the mansion tour (actual residence of our 1st President). Better signage and explanation for visitors might help. Random people were walking around and away from groups, past the lines, etc. Anyway, the grounds and residence are beautiful, informative and enjoyable for people of all ages. We also enjoyed the restaurant. Great quality food and fair prices!

William Maysonet

Such an historical place to visit and to live close by. Lucky that my military career has brought me to the DC area allowing me to visit so many beautiful historical places!

Barbara Wollenberg

Very interesting historical site. I learned a lot about the founding of America (I am German). Washington was a very interesting person with multiple interests. Who would have known. We even went to his distillery.

Caleb Lathers

It was really fun when i went in 8th grade. I had a lot of fun. I still have the bracelet they gave me for answering a question right. I recommend coming here with your family and friends

Randy Harrell

If you are able to, I would highly recommend the garden tour. It gives slot of good information on the meal planning of the period. If you are on a budget and eating in the food court, buy just one drink as refills are free.

Nathan Powers

Get here early if you want to see it all. We arrived at 2 and ran out of time by 5. It takes 20 minutes for the tour plus a couple hours to see the sites at a decent pace. More if you take it slow. Also there are multiple events throughout the day with the last at 3pm. Several only provide one chance to see. I recommend seeing everything around the house then go down to the wharf, ride the shuttle back to the front building. Then when you think you are done you have another hour or two touring the museum and education center. Lots to see and do. There are several extra activities that cost extra so keep that it mind. Easy to spend $50 per person if you do extras.

Short and Sweet

Loved the place. Very informative. Make sure to wear confortable shoes and some sunblock. We also drove to this location but it’s also accessible through the water taxi. If we knew this we would’ve taken the boat ride. Food at their restaurant is also really good

Terri Morriss

U can almost sense you're in the presence of greatness. It's George Washingtons home ! Beautiful grounds and location right on the banks of the Potomac. Really appreciate the history behind this place. Really well maintained. A must see. If u really want to do it right visit by boat.

Matt Carlino

Fantastic history. Everything is well designed for touring and learning. Specifically enjoyed the house tour. As the guide pointed out, many items in the house, like the stair rail, are completely original; meaning you were touching the same wood railing as George Washington, maybe many other historical figures. Would not recommend the National Treasure movie tour though.

Kay W

This is one of my favorite places in the United States. It is kept up so well, all the people working there really have a passion for the history of the place. The back lawn along the river is the perfect place to sit and contemplate life, the river seems to absorb all the sound from the tourist on even the busiest day you can feel quite alone and content. The house is lovely and with a good deal of original color, portraiture and furniture it is an interesting historical site. The museum is quite interesting and interactive, they have enough information for people of all ages to spend the entire day looking through. The kitchen there has pretty decent food, burgers, pizza, hotdogs, chicken tenders, salads, ice cream; anything you could want really. If you would like something a little more upscale go to the Mount Vernon Inn next door, they have delicious food! The shops here are very interesting as well, with all types of temptations. They often have fairs and festivals, check the schedule on their website, they are lots of fun! Don't forget to walk the grounds through the gardens and down through the woods, they are lovely! And don't forget to meet Mrs. Washington, she is a lovely lady and so mesmerizing to listen to!

Matthew Smith

Mount Vernon is a very beautiful place full of history and information about the first President of the United States of America. Stepping foot on the grounds is like stepping back in time. There is a truly special feeling that one gets when they set foot on the grounds. The museum is amazing as well! Don't be alarmed by the amount of vehicles in the parking lot. Once you enter the property it almost seems like you are the only person there. It is a must see for everyone!

Ms N Meza

History brought to life. Took a school group, they had a great time! Enough activities to fill a whole day. Check for special performances. A little rough in the summer because of the weather. Wear WALKING shoes and bring a water bottle. Drinking fountains are available along the paths.

Ned M.

They're doing a great job of keeping this place in top condition. The employees were more than willing to help and share their knowledge. The education center gave me a lot more appreciation for George Washington.

VlaD Dim

Beginning of US history is here. The house of the first president, his bedroom and bed where hi passed away. Monument and tomb is here. Excursion is quick, not enough information, like hurry, stuff is not friendly. You can’t take pics and videos inside buildings. But actually there is nothing especially inside. Everything so simple.

The Sovereign Life

This was an amazing place to tour and see the History of America's first President. You can tour President Washington's house, slave quarters, kitchen and multiple other buildings from his original plantation. You can also pay your respects to the President at his and Martha's tombs along with twenty other Washington family members. There is too much to mention it all here. This is a must visit if your visiting anywhere near Mount Vernon.

Stephanie Reyes

Mount Vernon is breathtaking, it gave me a taste of George Washington’s life and history. The views were out of this world. I learned a lot here. Prepare to walk a lot to see a lot. I went in the middle of July and it was hot and humid, walking it that weather was no joke! Overall this is a must see and so worth it!

Terri Stewart

What i was able to visit was very interesting NOT handicap accessible. No motorized carts. WC yes, but terrain is very hilly, pushing WC would be tough. I could do the house tour, except 2nd level, very interesting. Sad to miss the tombs but very steep walk. Nice grounds. Nice gift shop, lots of selections.

KFIR E

Very nice place to visit. The crew is nice . Kids friendly

Wanda Croft

Loved it, wish I would have had time to see the whole place. View is absolutly crazy gorgeous! Loved the scripture by the tomb, emotional day when you realize the significance of the people who used to live there.

Kuixi He

Wonderful place to spend the day. Try to spend atleast 3-4 hours here if you can stay on your feet for that long. The mansion tour is about 45 minutes and the rest of the facility is open to you to explore and enjoy!

Andrey Kolomiytsev

Beautiful place a must see - so much history here! You get to walk through George Washington's house and all the rooms and in every room there is a person that tells you what the room was used for and everything about it. Then you get to walk around all the slaves houses and and shops - sad and interesting history. Also you get to go down to the river and to a peace of his plantation and the barn. There also is the old and new tome of George Washington and his wife. There are two museums that are a must see, one about the slaves and one about George Washington.

Cathy VerSchneider

Take water and a wide brim hat or umbrella. It was 91° and the sun was bright on August 7th. Lots of walking. Learn about George Washington, the farmer, businessman and family man. Lovely grounds. Well maintained. Informative staff. Gift shops, dining and a shuttle service for those who get tired walking. Checkout the icehouse, ha-ha fence and sundries garden!!

Michael Richardson

I took the Potomac water taxi from Alexandria. The Vernon Estate is really fascinating. Be sure to explore all the other buildings and gardens as well as the mansion itself. The line to get into the Mansion was quite long and outdoors. Be sure to stay hydrated.

Brandy Smouse

Touring the estate was a great experience! In addition to the house tour, I highly recommend downloading the Scout Leader's Guide to the historic trail. It provides great details about various areas on the estate.

James Sutton

If you love history then this is a must see. Plus a beautiful view of the Potomac river.

Monique Egan

This is a must see! The mansion tour is gorgeous! We were able to have a wreath ceremony at Washington's tomb...paying our respects to such a gentleman president. There are several gardens to tour, shops such as the blacksmith, shoemaker, and spinning shops, trails to hike, a farm, and the most spectacular view of the Potomac! There is also a place to eat and a large gift shop. There is something for every age here. Explore!

Jessica Jarreau

So beautiful and so educational! So much we didn't know about the life of our First President. Definitely worth the money to do the VIP tour!

Lia Brooks

Beautiful grounds and property. I wish there wasn’t construction around the main house though. The river views were spectacular and all the trade actors were very skilled and informative. I quite enjoyed it, would recommend it!

Mlimma

Beautiful place to visit. I highly recommended it. I was very impressed how well they preserved the property and furniture. They have a souvenir store and a G.Washington museum with 3 real size G.W wax figures. Very realistic and cool! We had a tour along with some french tourist group and we had a blast.

Annette Ciesinski

Half hour tour was informative but wish it could have gone on longer. I also would have liked to try the products from the distillery but they don't sell tiny bottles. Overall, a great time.

Donna Davis

Not an enjoyable experience. Sadly commercialized. Cost for 2 senior citizens was $40. We were rushed through the mansion. There were unrealistic extra fees if you wanted to see some other parts. There should be a map of the layout of the visitor center building. We got lost in one of the museums. The 2 starting places for the mansion tour should be labeled at each of the two physical sites. Many had a hard time knowing if they were at the appropriate start. I felt that it was not run in a manner honoring George Washington.

michael garner

This place is gorgeous. You can really see how Washington lived. Easy to get to and many water fountains for days like today (96F).

Chris Clark

Such a wonderful place to visit. Really a must see in Washington, DC if you can get there. They really have a lot of special events, and they do such a classy job putting them on!

Keila Dalila

Breathtaking views and very well kept. It's a very big place with a lot of walking, make sure to wear sunscreen ans comfortable shoes. The food is a little expensive but that's expected. The museum is interactive and a great place for the whole family.

Bud Coe

How can you not give it 5 stars......The society running Mt Vernon is simply first class. You move comfortably around the plantation and come to fully experience the way Washington ran the farm before his service to his country. Learn about how the mixture of free staff and hundreds of slaves made for the wealth and comfort of our ex President. PS....get there before the busses of tourists arrive. Stay late, take a break or two, learn deeply about our country's early history.

Rosario Smirne

Took son to see the Firework Display at the Mount Vernon Mansion. Was a great time. We both enjoyed our time there. The fireworks and music was awesome!

Mike Crossley

Very interesting place that obviously means such a lot to Americans as the beloved home of their 1st President, George Washington. The pre-visit film, too, was very interesting. It shows him as a very brave and very capable fighting officer and leader who was not frightened to lead from the front. Excellent visit.

Anna Rutkowski

A beautiful drive from Arlington and an even more beautiful location. I very much enjoyed my visit of the grounds, house, and burial location of the Washington's. A must see!

Paul Polsinelli

Saw the fireworks here before Independence Day. Had a great time with the family. Peaceful, relaxing, and beautiful! I'd definately do it again. The slave quarters show the dark side of the place and I'm glad they didn't hide the fact. There is a key to the Bastille in the house and the bed he died on

Attila Nyikos

One of the best situated country houses in the world at the Potomac river, an autonomous agricultural and economic unit of her time, you could easily imagine to live there even today. My favorite is the key of the Bastille, that hangs above the main entrance door for pedagogical reasons: symbol of liberty. Army style kitchen is surprisingly good, even in European terms.

Jonathan Linford

Mount Vernon is the type of place you could spend a whole day in and keep coming back for more. Sure it is historically significant and housed one of the greatest leaders this world has ever seen, but this place goes beyond a historical site. It is beyond peaceful and leaves you in a state of serendipitous euphoria.

Frida A'dell

American History Enlivened! If you want to learn more about George Washington that you won't easily find in textbooks, then this is the place to go to get a visual of life as it was back in the day. However, don't go on a hot day. If you don't tolerate the heat well, try going when the weather is cooler. Standing in the long line waiting for your turn to get a tour of the mansion, can be exhausting. Nevertheless, it's worth a visit!

Kyle Hansen

Overall good experience. Washington had an incredible view from his home. That alone made it worth it. But it was also really fun to walk around the grounds and learn about the way of life back then. I especially loved the wheat grinder place down near the river. Interesting to learn about how he invented that.

Tyler James Larsen

Our family only planned to be here a couple of hours, but ended up staying eight. The boat tour was a really fun ride around the river. Saw some great views and wildlife. Foot court is reasonably priced, so we just ate there instead of hauling a lot of cargo around, which you can't do anyway because of the size limitation on bags. If you're a vegetable gardener like me, the gardens here are enviable. So well done.

Robert Prescott

My absolute favorite place. While in DC. They have kept this spot in pristine condition. The museum and house are amazing to see in person. I tell my students that it is astounding to be walking in the house of our first president. Don't miss the film in the museum in the life of General Washington.

Pastor Fry

I visited this historic site with our high school seniors as part of a history tour. Having just visited Valley Forge and Independence Hall in Philadelphia, the students had a greater appreciation for the site's significance. This privately-owned site is accessible by Metro Bus or just a 30-minute car ride from D.C. We were able to walk up to the ticket counter and get 17 tickets for the mansion tour without any wait in line although there were 30 coach buses in the parking lot. The staff at the counter was very friendly and welcoming. The opening 18-minute video on George Washington was a perfect start to the tour. If you haven't made reservations for a tour guide, an audio-recorded guide is available for an additional $7 and is worth it. The plantation is spread over 8,000 acres with buildings, gardens, wooded trails, and a cemetery. Of course, George and Martha Washington are buried here. Nearby is the burial memorial grounds for those who were enslaved on the plantation. Before exiting, be sure to visit the exhibit honoring the enslaved people. It is worth spending 30 minutes or more reading and interacting with the exhibits. The food court is unsurprisingly overpriced but convenient. There are several options including a deli, pizza, hamburgers, and icecream.

Rachel Iverson

Lovely gardens, toured the house and did the audio tour. Glad we didn’t choose a full tour as wandering around on our own was much more fun. Lunch was also excellent in the restaurant.

Susan Davis

Was last here on my honeymoon. Very interesting to see how everything was so many years ago. There was even a harpsichord player, dressed in period clothing. Nice to pay homage to the father of America

Dianna Bankson

Beautiful estate full of history. Wear comfortable walking shoes and plan to spend an entire day exploring the grounds.

Nancy Tanchel

Truly historic visit to the home of a true American hero. Almost sacred ground; without him, there's no USA

Adam Davis

An incredible property that is well maintained. It is easy to see why George Washington loved this spot, from the overlook, to the attention to detail, everything seems coordinated and planned to an astounding degree. They are working on the main house (July ‘19), but the self-guided tour is a must-see!

Rockland Mosby

Great place to visit and we'll worth the cost. It's changed a lot over the years / all for the better.

Bwilliams Cole

My first visit to our first Presidents home Mount Vernon. Much to see and learn. Will return for Christmas candlelight evening.

Erich Meier

A must see! Just so much history regarding one of our country's founding fathers. The mansion is stunning - my only disappointment was that the mansion's exterior was being refurbished during my visit. Guess I will have to come again! :)

Steve Smith

This was our second trip to Mount Vernon (we live in the western US), so we decided to take a Specialty Tour—and we absolutely loved the experience. Our tour guide, David, demonstrated clear command of historical details and context all while tailoring the experience to his audience, which included small children, teens, and older guests, ranging from the casually curious to the amateur historian. David's passion for history, and for George Washington's Mount Vernon, sparked our curiosity, engaged our minds, and made us laugh out loud. Most importantly, we found our visit to Mount Vernon truly inspiring. Highly recommended for families interested in a fun, engaging experience with one of our national treasures.

Dan O'C

Beautiful scenery and knowledgeable staff. Tickets are sorta expensive and the cafeteria food was meh. Overall a nice, well preserved piece of history.

Michelle Whitlock

I'm a history buff, so this was on my must see list. The house is being repainted right now and the process is quite impressive. (After the paint a coating of sand will be added to give it a stone look.) The staff and displays are very informative. I was hoping for more on sight demos and staff dressed in 1700's attire.

Ted Batycki

What a place to see just outside of DC. Worth your time and $$$. Great stuff: the place itself is amazing. They are incorporating technology in subtle and fun ways (interactive app for kids). The staff is knowledgeable and friendly. You are walking the same ground as America's greatest founding fathers. Simply amazing. Things to know: lots of walking. Can be expensive. Did I mention the walking?

Damon Allison

Washington makes the average person look super unproductive. The man did everything. General, President, ran a distillery, was a farmer, and was extremely involved in simple day to day activities like planting his garden. Definitely an inspiration. The main house tour was really quick. The interesting parts for us were the museum and walking around to all the other buildings.

Julianna McCracken

Really enjoyed this historical site! Nice cafe for lunch. The museum was more extensive than we imagined. This is nearly a full day activity if you take advantage of all the areas available. Staff were pleasant and helpful. You need to be able to walk well to fully appreciate this destination. There are inclines/declines and lots of area to cover.

Matthew Parks

Plan a couple full days if you really want to see it all. Lots to learn here! And impressively set up. Pretty kid friendly. They'll have some bored moments, but there's plenty to catch their interest as well.

Brent Thomas

My second time here. Was with a group that had a private tour here of the mansion only but it was incredible. To hear about the History of this gorgeous home and to see many of the Furniture pieces and paintings and personal items that George Washington owned was truly moving. They even have the same bed upon which he passed away. In the basement we saw the original cornerstone laid by Washington's father when he built the original house. If you are anywhere near the area this is a must see but also allow time to explore the grounds and see the very tomb where George and Martha are laid to rest.

erendira herrera

Such a wonderful experience. The tour guides are informative and welcoming. Before leaving make sure to take the cruise ship Christine. The crew is friendly and Travis was most knowledgeable willing to answer questions. Thank you!

Stewart Smith

Amazing place in history. The tour of his house was a 30 minute guided tour, very informative and to the point. The self guided tour of grounds and out buildings were a little longer. You can take pictures on the inside of his home. Keep up the good work.

Patti Dybdahl

For $20 you can spend an entire day learning about George Washington. Tour of the house, no photography inside, and explore the grounds. A free shuttle takes you to the gristmill. The tour includes a demonstration. You can purchase rye whiskey made at mount Vernon. There is also a museum, a slave memorial, farming displays, musical demonstrations and places to eat (fast food and restaurant). You can walk the gardens which have a variety of flowers, herbs and vegetables. If you like American history and want to learn fun facts about our first president, this place should be on your bucket list. Thanks to those preserving history.

Leah Houg

We had such a fun time here. You’re definitely going to want to give yourself more than four hours. We did the tour of Surviving the 18th Century and really enjoyed all of the facts. Give yourself some added extra time if you’re a museum buff to if you want to walk through some of the artifacts on site. Love that they have a restaurant there as well. Was nice to sip on some wine and get off the feet for a bit. Great experience! Even in the heat ;)

Kathy Silance

Mount Vernon was absolutely fabulous! We had a great family day of history and learning. My children participated in the wreath laying service, it was beautiful. We were also able to purchase a flag that flew over Mount Vernon for the day we were there. The lady in the gift shop went way above and beyond for us.

Elizabeth Batchelor

A must see, hours worth of interesting history and gorgeous scenery. This place runs solely on donations, souvenirs/concessions and the entrance fee (about $20 per adult). Well worth it!!! Be warned, even though there's lots of shade, it can get HOT. The grounds are amazing and you dont want to miss them, so plan accordingly!

john gill

I had one of the best days of my life. Start w Bike and Roll in Alexandria. See Grady or Eliza, they're great! Bike and Roll has a Tour Package. You ride bikes to Mt Vernon on a beautiful bike path. Then tour Mt Vernon, then ride a boat back to Old Town. Just had a blast!! Definitely recommend!! Worth every penny!!

Frank Cockren

To see the restoration of the main house was very interesting as well as informational. Inside tour guides gave an interesting twist to the different floors & rooms. Only drawback is one needs to be in decent physical shape to walk the grounds & "handle" the stairs. Rest rooms are few & far between.

A.V Mathew

Estate of First US President General George Washington is a beautiful spot to visit & learn. Vast collection in its Museum is an asset, maintained & managed well.

It was quite a memorable experience! Fourth of July! These daytime fireworks were our first of the type. We enjoyed them. The Citizenship ceremony on the lawn was so emotional... such a great time and location for those people to pledge citizenship to the USA!

Have visited here countless times. It is very worthwhile! O.S. It is true...George actually did sleep here.

Allow plenty of time to visit this large estate and grounds. Try the Agent711 app with your kids. Visit the large gift shops and food court for a break. Wear comfortable shoes.

Everett Williams

This was an interesting and informative tour. The characters dressing up in costume was a nice touch and the tour was well organized. I'm still not comfortable with the term enslaved peoples instead of using the noun slave. It's as if it wasn't Washington doing the enslaving, but some nebulous entity that Washington just happened to be in proximity of. Still a worthwhile tour. Recommend going during off peak as it can get pretty packed.

This is one of the best monuments I have visited. I love that the house is over 200 years old with old artefacts still intact. I got to see the carriages, livestock animals, the living and guest areas and the dining. The greatest part of it is how they tried to replay the past by having people replicate how things were during those times. It gives you the chance to relive the past. Talking about the souvenir shops, I think the souvenirs won't last a long time so be careful when buying any item front the stores. All in all this is a great place to visit. Highly recommended.

Perfect place for families and a good view! Always a positive atmosphere and friendly faces! Thankful for places like this in the community that provide a safe environment for travelers or locals.

Great venue! I went here back in December, but I guess I forgot to write a review. The staff here is super friendly! I really enjoyed the aesthetic of the place, and the animals they had on the grounds were very cute. The movies they play before your tour are very informative and well put together. I’d like to go back at some point in the spring or summer because the foliage was sort of blah at this time. I think it could be beautiful during either of these seasons! Fun place overall, though!

Very historical place to study ! The tour guides there have been doing really great work. You might feel like you are going back to the George Washington time. The view from the house make me feel really peacefully. Great place to visit and learn the history!

Matthew Everett

Very neat piece of our history. The tour guides were very nice and knowledgeable. Definitely go while they are having events or festivals.

Nick Cruz

This place was amazing my favorite stop on my trip. I highly recommend stopping here for a great excursion. I also recommend the cruise around the river they offer it was alot of fun and the views are spectacular.

K Fern

Fantastic place. Really great for kids. Very educational and not too loud or busy. Definitely don’t miss this. The kids can get a map that they fill with facts from around the property. They then get it stamped and are able to get a little trinket. This kept them busy and engaged. The tour is great. You get a lot of interesting information about this great and fantastic man.

Bruce Banner

Wow this is must stop for history buffs!! You will definitely not be dissatisfied with your visit here. Awesome staff very courteous even with alot of people coming and going. The gift shop is pretty neat as well. I enjoyed everything about it and will definitely be back to see it all again!! What a awesome tour with audio!!

An exceptional set of museums, outbuildings, and exhibits and documentary videos. I learned a lot about George Washington I did not know before going. The house seems unremarkable, but so was our tour guide. Everything else with the visit and the property was exceptional.

Jody Fry

Well maintained and extremely well presented and organised. Very impressed by the whole experience. The Mansion is done in time slots, with a onsite guide (who was excellent) which means not only do you get a better look around the home it also preserves the building.

Jessica Kelley

I visited for the first time at the age of 12 and thought it was cool. I came back recently on a field trip and was amazed at all the new things added, especially the museum. The level of thought and care especially given to the telling of the story of the enslaved blacks who worked on the plantation was stellar. My students loved it and so did I.

Howard Ellsworth

Well organized house tours included with admission, and many others for a modest fee. Museum worth the extra hour + to visit. Very nice shops and food courtyard. Only problem for a first time visitor is you're right on top of the estate before you see any sign notifying you it's ahead.

S B

Enjoyed everything about this tour. To think we walked where George Washington and family did was was awe inspiring. The grounds were lovely and the museum was wonderful. Many personal items to see. Do not miss this tour if in the DC area. A must see.

A unique piece of history preserved; what isn't there to love? Not only does it allow you to see where one of the greatest men in modern history grew up and lived but you're given access to a beautiful area to explore and walk around. A complimentary tour also goes down nicely. What I didn't expect was there to be random people dressed in contemporary clothing providing information on different parts of the estate. Nice touch.

Tiffany Blackwell

This place is wonderful! Absolutely beautiful...has been kept up very well. Loved so many things here. Plan to spend the day and picnic even but if you only have a few hours like we did you can still get in a lot. The house tour runs like a well oiled machine. The guides get you through quickly but informed and you see it all. The views from the house over the water are wonderful. This place is fully staffed and there seemed to be friendly people everywhere we went who were helpful and informative....even the very neat period dressed characters who would greet you and take you back in time. Great gift shops here with unique items ...a bit pricey but not terrible. Wear your walking shoes and dress according to days weather forecast as you are outside a good bit.

Nathan Sellers

This was a cool experience. A very well done preservation and restoration of our Nation's first President's home. It is more like a small town. Be prepared to do plenty of walking. There are several guided tours that are good. We went during Revolutionary War weekend. That was a treat to see many reenactments.

Teresa Woodward

Always enjoy watching the fireworks from the back yard. The gardens are inspirational. We love hearing Mr.Francisco playing fife. Visiting with George Washington and Mrs. Martha was nice. We enjoyed hearing their stories from a more neighborly perspective. The food truck game needs improvement. Very long waits (over 40 minutes for a hot dog) for cold food. No rhyme or reason to the way the orders are filled. But, other than that always lovely.

rainbowdad

I went here on a class trip, and I really loved this place. It was beautifully preserved, and offered a expertly reconstructed insight into the personal life of George Washington. It had very majestic scenery, and it was very large and had sprawling trails, so you could explore for a couple hours and be amazed for all of them. It even has a gift shop and food court. Overall a great place and I would recommend planning a visit if you are planning on going to D.C. or just live in the area.

Connor DuPra

I loved the place learning the history. They have a fun hunt for the kids to enjoy as well. All the workers were very friendly and informative

JP

So much history. Really enjoyed everything about our visit! A can't remember the man's name who plays all the flutes and drums, but he was AWESOME! The kids loved him. I know he is veteran.

Harvey Tillipman

What a wonderful experience. Grandson loved it. The 4D movie with lights flashing, huge sounds and the seats shaking every time the cannons were fired. Best was the actual snow coming down from the ceiling as Washington crossed the Delaware. Food was good in the restaurant too. Great day family outing day.

Take a rewarding journey into American history with a visit to George Washington's Mount Vernon, a sprawling 400-acre (161-ha) estate and gardens that was once home to the first president of the United States. You're sure to feel like you stepped back into colonial times. Take some free time to wander the elegant estate of George and Martha Washington on your own. Marvel at the sheer beauty of the spectacular mansion's exterior before going inside and exploring the lifestyle and legacy of the first American president. The grounds of the estate feature beautiful gardens, stables, and views of the scenic Potomac River, and many of these sights are preserved to look exactly as they did during Washington's time. You soon have a chance to satisfy your historical appetite with a visit to the museum and educational center, which features a variety of items once used by Washington himself.

Janis H.P.

Our tour bus took us to numerous memorials and sites but this site was one of the best. We walked the beautiful grounds, saw the memorial to the slaves, saw George and Martha's grave site where the vaults are on display, witnessed the 11:00 'wreath ceremony', and toured the incredible home. The home of George and Martha is huge, beautifully decorated and has the famous view of The Potomac River. Wow!

Steve Myers

The house is being revamped right now yet that was the main issue we had with the whole spot. Magnificent spot to visit. We turned out poorly to the base park since it was simply such a long stroll there and back. We happened to go on multi day that they had a man wearing period attire playing the harpsichord and that was extremely slick to see.

Krista Jennings

Very beautiful, preserved well, and working staff on the plantation are knowledgeable as well as artists in their craft. There's only a handful of them who are still working under old, pioneer ways to preserve and restore this amazing property. Such alot of work, for so few giving to be giving so much love to the property is inspiring!

Kara Hunter

The house is being redone at the moment but that was the only issue we had with the entire place. Wonderful place to visit. We didn't go through to the bottom park because it was just such a long walk there and back. We happened to go on a day that they had a man dressed in period clothing playing the harpsichord and that was really neat to see.

Steve Derrick

An impressive estate. Little kids will probably get bored quickly. House is neat to see. The just finished "redoing/refreshing/restoring" one room exactly as it was...it looks great. They are working on other rooms and the outside. Should look great when finished. They have some animals, a large field garden, a film before the tour, a slave memorial, old tomb and new tomb, and absolutely beautiful views. 5 stars for adults even if not that into history.

Dicken Doe

We rode bikes from Alexandria to Mount Vernon, which was fun on a warm day. The ride is mostly up hill on the way out, so prepare for a really easy and quicker cruise back down, we took 1h20 on the way out, less than an hour back. The house is a relatively modest affair, but interesting and historically important, and the grounds are very scenic if you have some time to hang out. Well worth it, and one of our favourite trips on our recent US holiday.

Jamie Dumont

This is a super cool place! Whether you're into history or not itis very cool to go to the place where George Washington lived and is his final resting. The place is very well-maintained and staff is very helpful and knowledgeable. The grounds are beautiful and we really enjoyed seeing the house. There is a lot of historical information that you can read and the staff share stories as well. We happened to be in the area in June so it was extremely hot and very busy so even with our house tour tickets we were in line for a bit. I would have liked to have stayed longer and explored more of the outdoor grounds but it was just too hot. If you are planning a visit you may want to look at alternative times.

Mo TexMex

This is a must stop it you're in the area. It's fascinating to see the furniture and decor. The guides are very knowledgeable and add to the ambience in their period costumes. Special shot out to the lady in the little shuttle who went above and beyond. I didn't catch her name but she had a German or Austrian accent and totally made the visit memorable.

Jon F

Fascinating trip back in time to the days of George Washington. Visitors get to experience Washington's home as it would have looked when he lived in it. Tours of the house are led by knowledgeable reenactors in period clothing. Attractions include beautiful gardens, a working blacksmith, stables, and a somber visit to Washington's tomb. Definitely check it out if you're into American history.

Mike and Jenny

Very educational. Take your time here! Don't pass up this opportunity.

JOHN ESSIGMANN

The tour of the mansion is very informative and the flow of visitors is pretty well regulated. Would very much recommend for anyone interested in history. A good amount of walking is involved if that is off-putting.

Timberly Hendricks

Full of historical information and sites about first president. Price adjustable for military and seniors. Beautiful grounds and we'll preserved home and adjacent buildings. Worth the less than 20$ admission for what's available. Again, not thrilled about paying for this attraction, but in comparison to Monticello, heads and tails above in citizen friendliness..worth the couple hour visit.

Exxa Kraper

Great place to visit for a piece of history! It is a lot of walking, but totally worth the experience! I loved touring George Washington's house! The views and the entire property are beautiful! The staff are dressed in historically accurate garb and are extremely knowledgeable and able to answer a multitude of questions. The museum was awesome. I would highly recommend going through there if you have the opportunity. It's highly interactive so it holds the attention of little ones. There is a large gift shop and a restaurant. The entire grounds are very clean.

G Kurian

Magnificent grounds and incredible restoration efforts to preserve such a historical place. You need an entire day to take in all the places and truly absorb the history and learn about 18th century life. Beautiful place! Worth the 20 min drive from DC.

Blake Baker

This place is fantastic. Washington had a very interesting life and it is a unique experience to spend time in a place that he put some much time and love into.

Keith Miller

First visited fifteen years ago. Wonderful piece of history. Unfortunately I was not impressed with the look of the exterior treatment being added supposedly to better protect it. The installation itself also was not impressive as there were many cracks and flaked areas exposing the wood underneath to moisture and the elements. There is a tremendous amount of history to be experienced here though and it is well worth the visit.

Vi SD

This location seems dedicated to being honest and objective about the history of this place, and rectifying the past wrongs. I'm sure there's more to do, but I learned a lot, and there were a lot of good facts about the African-American slaves who helped George Washington maintain his property.

Nicolas Burrows

It's a beautiful home with a lot of history. The tours are well done and very informative. My only complaint is that you're not allowed to take pictures on the inside of the home.
