REVIEWS OF First Landing State Park IN Virginia

TJ Mack

Great spot for a trip. We camped for two nights and had a great experience. Campsites we're good sized and very clean. Water and restrooms were easily accessible and clean. Close by we enjoyed hiking along the many trails in the park as well as lounging on the beach. Beach was uncrowded and perfect for little kids as the water was only waist deep for may yards of the beach and little to no waves to speak of. We definitely be going back.

Linda Bowden

The park is older and the campsites are smaller, especially for the larger rigs. The facilities were clean and well maintained, but starting to show their age. Great trails! Great beach! Biggest pod of dolphins I've ever seen.

Imane Ben.

Best place to relax without the noise an dovercrowding. Love it.

Brue Hoyt

Camping right next to the bay beach. The beach is far better for families with small children than Virginia beach. Great amenities. Nature centers, craft, hikes, activities, nature.

Albert Olson

Great beach with no boardwalk traffic or commercialization. No pounding surf either. Sometimes the dogs can be a little overwhelming.

Samantha Mrozowski

The rangers are amazing and helped us set up a beach funeral. They even helped us bring over other stuff! Those two getlemen were very honest and ethical. We will be definitely be visiting here again.. hopefully in better circumstances. We gave a small donation in the office as a thank you!

Fenilippi Dizoglou

Awesome waters, warm like Mediterranean and calm like a pool, ideal for toddlers! Shallow, too. I'm from Greece and reminded me of home. Loved it.

Winter Whisper

The beach itself is nice. The visitor's center is small, clean, and has good information. The employees have always been very cheerful. The only downside are those horrible large fly things that come out when the weather is nice. They wouldn't be so bad if they didn't bite, but they do! Dogs were walking out of there with huge bumps all over their bodies. We only stayed for a few minutes before we had to retreat. But it isn't like that every time, so I'm not sure what prompts their population explosion. It's a nice play to try and go to and it's not too expensive. Please leave the beach better than you found it.

Jeff Fritz

Park is terrific. If camping, be careful how you make your reservation. I was told via phone to go through Reserve America website and ended up with an issue that they were "unable to resolve." Lost out on money and camping date.

Nicholas White

They have a bunch of different trails to hike on which goes for miles. Awesome hiking spot in VB

Jake Mahoney

Trails, camping, benches, and great pine forest all around. One of my favorite parks.

Brittany Gayle

I hosted A Family Day here and it was the perfect location. Only one shelter but it fits 80 people for $90.00 which is not bad. There is a park, a bike trail, a fire pit, a walking path to the beach and plenty of free open space to run and enjoy!

Chinell Jones

Great family beach! Kid and pet friendly. Park is also a camp ground. Calm waters. Good for water sports and fishing. Will visit again.

Jay Kiser

Great place for a walk in the park. Beautiful swampy landscapes.

Ana Villanueva

Beautiful small beach and amazing hiking trails. Dog friendly place that isn't crowded. Definently will be back !! Please clean up after yourself just to keep the beach clean ✌

ONAD -

It's really beautiful. Nice trails and beach

James Canada

PRO:The welcome center has fair parking, full bathrooms and an area to change into swimming attire. It a short walk to the beach on a wooden deck. The shoreline is in the Chesapeake Bay so rip-currents arent normally a problem. There are nets up to catch jellyfish. The playground adjacent to the bike and walking path is mostly clear from dangerous underbrush. Picnic area provides permanently -affixed charcoal grills. All areas were pet friendly at the time I visited (check with the park before bringing your pet) CON: $10.00 per car for one day parking. (Not terrible however plan accordingly). The picnic area and the beach are separated by the main thoroughfare. All in all a great way to spend and afternoon or a camping trip. (All fees are posted on website)

Thu Nguyen

It a good place for hiking with various trails, easy to get to and easy to navigate which way to go. It's nice that this area of the state has been preserved. It provides nice access to the beach. Although there are lots of trees in the campground, due to the area they are short, live oaks which do little to shade a camper.

Brent Gerdes

This is an absolute beautiful place, all the greenery is nice and relaxing, a nice way to unplug from the phone's that take up 97% of our lives and just relax

Gary Flaskegaard

A friend of myself, went out on a walk thinking it was a six-mile round trip, only to find out that it was a six-mile one-way walk. Definitely somewhere you want to bring water with you they do not have water jug filling fountains. the trails are true hiking trails along with one paved bicycle/walking trail. Has a wonderful Beach area up near the boat launch area where you have ocean water but with no Riptides and such not a lot of people out there so you can enjoy it a quiet family time if you bring family with you. This is a state park it does cost you to enter the park During certain hours in certain times of the year. Unless you're a disabled veteran where state parks are free for veterans who live in the state.

Russell Brooks

Secluded camping. Like having your own private beach.

Barbara Butts-Harakal

My go-to for hiking, this State Park has something for everyone. Whether you like the beach or hiking trails you will find it here. History about the area and the flora and fauna can be found right before the trails. $5 parking is not bad either and there is also the ability to camp there. If you have a documented disability the rangers will help you fill out the paperwork to get free admission to the park for the year.

Vincent Mandeville

I stayed in a tent for a few days. The spots are clean, water access is very close by and installations are functional (showers, sink, toilets). However, the installations are not super clean. The Park is also next to a military base, which means that you'll sometimes be bothered by engine noise even late at night. You have walkable beach access, the beach is clean and not too crowded.

Kim Hicks

I love being close to and in nature, and it seems like the staff here really care about the guests and the natural habitat that is the park.

Mariana P.

This place is a great place to stay. It's close to the city , it has their own access to the beach. It has everything you need with restaurants also close by. One thing, don't reserve camping close to the road, specially campground #44. It was noisy.

April Hunsberger

Our family has visited this park for the past 5 years. We love camping here and the activities provided by the park rangers. I have to say this year has been superb thanks to Park Ranger Virginia. She is a wonderful activity director and person in general. She is extremely knowledgeable about everything, has a wonderful and eunthastistic attitude, and has added to our vacation this year! Thank you Virginia!!

Lisa C

Pretty nice park for a hike or walk on the trails along little beaches and through wetlands. Also a good place to hang out on the beach, fish or go boating.

Dox Ldy

Be advised that the entrance fee on weekends is $10 (website says $5). This is a real nice place to visit if you don't like the big waves of the ocean. It is beautiful at sunset. If you kayak not too far from the beach you can see pods of dolphins!

Monica Wilson

Trails well marked and maintained. Bring exact change or a check- parking was on the honor system when we visited.

David Walker

Beautiful park with a great bay-side beach (meaning there are no ocean waves, rather calm ones like at a river). We were close to other sites (#121), the bathroom and showerhouse. The beach entrance was about 1/4 mile away but it was nice because that beach entrance was far away from the main entrance so it was never crowded the whole Labor Day weekend. Plenty of shade and space at our site. The wooden sidewalk that leads out to the beach definitely needs replacing since almost all the wood was splintered and/or rotting. A bag of ice was only $3, so not bad and the store had some essentials and extras, including hand scooped ice cream. Will definitely stay here again

Jonathan Ashton

Nice park, nice trails, trying to find parking is really difficult in or out of the park.

Corey Thrasher

Pretty nice beach to relax on. The trails are nice for short hikes as well. But there is often a lot of litter along the beach.

Tiffany Loving

Love visiting this park! My family goes at least once every summer, it's a great beach to go to with kids and if you're not big on crowds. The water is calm and you have to go out pretty far before it gets deep. Also, when it comes to cleanliness it's 110% better than VA Beach oceanfront!

Kristina Landers

Absolutely amazing the only negative was the bathroom next to our campsite was not very clean and smelled like septic. But other than that small thing everything was perfect. I used another restroom and it was way better than the one next to us. Otherwise it would have definitely been a 5*

Erin Contour

Snagged a last minute RV site in August, 2019, site specific #174 on the water side. It was a very nice site, we weren't up next to our neighbors and the native plants made a nice screen so we felt pretty private. The location is almost exactly in between the bath houses / boardwalks. Note you cannot just walk to the beach, the dunes are protected... you need to go down to the boardwalk and pass over that way. It's really great that the trolley bus comes to the Park Office area and you can ride all over Virginia Beach on it for like $4ish a day or $8ish for 3 days. We were complete newbies so it took us a bit before we realized the trails were on the other side of the highway from the campground. Unfortunately, this August was so so SO hot that we did not get to do what we wanted. Hiking was just too much. Would love to come back when the weather was better. We stuck to museums and such, didn't even go to the beach. We took a drive to see some wildlife refuge areas and hiking there was impossible for other reasons - the extremely large quantity of large flying bugs that dive bombed you. I've been to Belize, went up Monkey River to see the holler monkeys... so not a whimp, but I ran for cover. I'd need my hat with a bug net to try that again. Really really beautiful area, seriously bummed at not really being able to do much.

Kenneth McCreary

The location is the only positive aspect of this campground. I have visited here three times, and each time has been a disappointment: from the unfriendly staff to having a campsite with hookups on the wrong side and over 35 ft away from the RV. I have enjoyed many other Virginia state campgrounds, but this one fails to meet my expectations. They are the only game in town, and they act that way.

Annalysia Volk

We went to the narrows and had a wonderful time aside from all the jellyfish. What an awesome place with awesome people. Will be back again soon, although maybe not in the water...

REDBONE BOB

Love First Landings Park...been coming here from West Virginia when it was called Sea Shore State park...Now living here in Norfolk Virginia we had to buy season pass..My only Negative is, Quite a bit of Garbage on walk areas and Few to no garbage cans OR RECYCLING BINS...This beautiful area can quickly become unsightly...Love to drive my classic Chevy Roxy to First Landings knowing She is Safe while we enjoy the Beach...

Shawn Mick

I use the trails for running, and it's perfect. Very quiet with many different trails to explore. It's easy to stay motivated to run here. Looking forward to the call colors.

Cecily Diness

Love this place! Great place to swim if you are not crazy about waves. The little people is dog friendly, the people around us were considerate and the person at park gate was very helpful.

Kendall Haire

Will definitely keep coming back to this campsite. Our first visit was fantastic.

James Blount

Went for a walk to walk off breakfast. Saw many people doing the same, along with biking and jogging. Did almost 4 miles round trip on the 12 mile round trip main trail.

Jitu Patel

2 weeks ago First Landing state park is awesome! The Beachside is very nice and clean. The actual Park itself and the trails are all very nice and interesting with lots to see. Staff is very friendly and helpful. I would highly recommend stopping here if you're in the area traveling.

Vikki Flesher

Love this campground. Trails, shaded lots, near the Chesapeake Bay. Helpful staff and educational learning opportunities for the kids.

Janet Werner

It's nice that this area of the state has been preserved. It provides nice access to the beach. Although there are lots of trees in the campground, due to the area they are short, live oaks which do little to shade a camper. The bathhouses are dated and not heated. However, the water is hot, the showers are well lit and kept clean. It's nice to have 2 dish washing sinks at each bathhouse. Some of the campsites are near low lying areas which can hold water in a rainy season. Bring bug repellent if you come in warm weather. We camped in early April and it was too cold. There are nice educational areas at both the park office and the trail center. There are lots of trails of varying difficulty and length. Two trails are open to bicycles.

Karen Ingram

I love it here so much! Easy access to beach. Shaded campsites. Friendly staff. Right on city bus line!

Paul d

This a special place in Virginia. So easy to get to, very accessible trails for bikes and by foot. The fauna is amazing! Take advantage of the United States most northern sub tropical climate.

vwtopdown

Been camping here for twenty five years. Proud to bring my kids here. Friendly staff and a great beach.

Aidan Hall

As warned, you may hear helicopters untill about 10-11 pm, but the bathrooms are clean. I don't understand why some people expect camping to be as clean as staying in the Hilton!? We love this park, and it is especially great for dogs!

Elizabeth Russell

We spent a few days in Virginia Beach off season and were looking for somewhere besides the boardwalk to go for a walk. We accessed the trails from 64th street and there is parking just inside the park. We did not drive around to the main entrance/office so I cannot speak for that aspect. The trails are well marked and maintained. Off season, insects were not a problem but I imagine this is quite different in the summer. There is a beach overlooking the Chesapeake Bay but we did not go there.

shane sawsiengmongkol

Always a great spot for family, doggies, good shallow calming water that sometimes depend on the tide, you came walk a half a mile out and still standing, great place to hang!

Jason Ciaschi

A very good park with a lot of camping options. The camp spot we had was decent and the bathrooms are average. My only complaint about the camp spot is our fire ring was in a section under some trees. Though this may sound cool, it was a mosquitos palace. The best part of the park is the beach which is well maintained and private to the park. If you camp here there are a few entrances to the beach which are private to only campers so crowding is no problem. I would go again to camp, but really only for the beach. As a campground it rates about a 3 out of 5 as a beach it is 5 out of 5. We did notice that if you visit just to go to the beach you need to be there early for a parking spot.

Aimee Dolan

Beautiful state park! If you want beach time, park here! Office is open until midnight for late arrivals. Spots are a wee difficult to back into so get a pull through if you're not comfortable backing in. facilities are clean and store is prepped for any last minute thing or souvenirs your heart desires. Highly recommend.

Tyler Carlson

Very impressed with this campground and park. Our spot was a bit difficult to get into but it was so perfectly secluded and we had a fire area that was also hidden. There is a lot of uncrowded beach and the water was nice. Bathrooms were good not great

Will Miller

Nice bay-side beach with better scenery than the oceanfront. Sand dunes, scrub brush and tons of dragonflies at the right time of year. Always shells and fragments washed up, and we've even found shark teeth before. Across the road is the woods section, wonderful hiking paths through a cypress swamp with black water and Spanish moss living in the trees above. Nothing else like this in the area. Well worth the 10 dollar entry fee.

Chris Anderson

Great trails. Awesome beach. Boat ramp.

Jonathan Aulich

One of my absolute favorite state parks. Trails are well maintained and the setting is beautiful, switching back and forth between beach and forest.

Cindi Courter

Favorite State Park! 25 miles of hiking trails...hike along Long Creek... Love the Cypress Swamps with their hanging Spanish Moss. It's the farthest North for Spanish Moss! Amazing 2800 acres to explore! We have hiked and biked hundreds, if not thousands of miles here!

David Hartzell

First Landing is a state park next to the Bay. They have their own Beach. You can go as a day visitor. Where you can bring your camping stuff and go camping. The beach is right next to the facility so it's just a short walk to the water.

that girl

Love taking my dog for walks along the trails! Not happy abt the raise in parking fees. It's a bit much especially considering some the bridges along the trail need fixing. And the simple fact that I'm paying to go walk.

TradeMarked Savage

Amazing place to hike around with quiet beaches. Our dogs love to explore the trails and cool off in the water

Tara Ball

Lovely Live Oak Trees throughout; awesome beach and campsites too!

Nancy Pouliquen

First Landing State Park is a great outing for all ages. It is pet friendly as well as bike friendly. There are forest and waterside hikes filled with many raptor birds, blue crab, mussels, oysters, sandy beaches as well as thick forest trails. Bring your camera!

Anderson

Beautiful place. Pro tip, the main path or the one with no obstrusians is for the cyclists or people wanting to have a walk. If you were looking for an actual hike, go into one of the fences kind of things.

Kenneth Hornfeldt

I've always loved this place. There are plenty of trails, some of which are quite long for the adventurer. I had forgotten about the entry fee... Beware of that $10! There's no discount for military.

Olga Horine

Bring your hiking shoes. The trails were beautiful. They have different trails for all difficulties. I would definitely return.

Susan B

I just love it here. It's so peaceful and beautiful. My sister and I had a good workout on the bike trail and then cooled off in the water. Usually we pack a lunch and hang out on the beach. Paddleboarding is on my agenda soon.

BiG O

Beautiful place, well marked trails and lots of overlooks. Would give five stars if bikes would be allowed on the trails.

Heather Long

Lovely shaded camp sites. Friendly park staff and an uncrowded beach.

Makenzie Hughling

Ive been going there since I was little and that's just where we go. It's never crowded and you can ride your jetskis and boats all you want. It's also a great place for tubing. And it has great hiking trails to hike in. The only bad thing is the jellyfish

James Krudop

First Landing's quality has definitely decreased since I last stayed there in 2016. I've been going there since I was a little kid, and I've loved every time I've had a chance to camp there. My fiancée and I cut our recent stay short because it was difficult to sit and just relax. Every 45 seconds a car passes by, or people are out walking/talking past quiet hours. There was, what sounded like, a party going on either inside or nearby the park, heavy bass booming across the sky does not a relaxing night by the fire make. I love(d) First Landing, and being able to visit whenever I wanted was so nice. But this last stay definitely soured it for me. Also, not to mention the huge price increase to reserve a NONSPECIFIC site? Not 3 years ago I was paying $20/night, and now (after fees) it's almost double that? An increase in price, but decrease in quality really isn't a good business model. I want to see First Landing do well, I love(d) that place, I have so, so many good memories from there. I get that things change, and that Hampton Roads is growing, but the path FL is taking really sucks. To end on a positive note: we did have a lovely little fire.

Jeffrey Blumenthal

Love the party. Had a good four mile hike.

Virginia Wind

This is a nice clean park. Warm water showers, restrooms are kept clean, trash is managed, ETC. Places to eat nearby. Price is reasonable.

Kristen McGarity

Took the dogs & 2 teen boys. We all had fun on the trails. We saw some local wildlife and got some well needed exercise.

Jim Mitchell

I took my wife for her first camping trip. She loved it. The bathrooms and showers we're clean. Everyone that works there are very friendly and helpful. Had a class B Promaster and brought our boat. Used the parks boat launch that was just around the corner. Shallow and full of sand bars so be careful. Each site has a fire ring. You can buy wood from the visitors center or grab it from Food Lion on the way in. The beach area and the campsites we're very clean as well. It was a great first experience for her majesty

Jerry & Lorie Widmann

Nice walking trails on the water. Also I found it a nice refresher course to the start of this great nation we call home.

JKabliK

Cool spot.. lots of jelly fish in the water though so beware

Suzi Taylor

This was our first time near Virginia Beach. We had no idea where to go. We ended up at First Landing State Park. It was so nice to pay $10 to park, walk to the beach, and have a nice spot for my family.

Terry Lynch

We loved this park. The beaches were spacious, the water perfect in July, the sunsets were beautiful and the camping and cabins made the time there special. We had a family reunion and most rented cabins. I camped. We spent the day on the beach and watched the sunset! Be present. Be with nature. Enjoy this park.

Micaela Roldan

Beautiful place feels like a hidden gem. The sand is nice a coarse for those who don't like sand too much. Dogs are allowed. You have to pay for parking.

Cheri Simmons

Experienced a NOT so good check in for camping.. I reserved a 50+ foot site for my 40 foot toyhauler and truck.. Was told no pre site selection, would be assigned at Check in..Well, New guy I guess, Directed me to the main camping area..BUT..This area, is narrow, and winding narrow roads..Almost impossible for me to get through. Tore marker light of trailer, scrapped roof, and siding..tree branches extended into road, canopy not high enough for my 13' Trailer.. after 2 attempts to park..a park ranger directed me to a differant area for larger rigs.. even there only a few sites had the height or turning ability to park, and not very level.. ( fhewww).. But once in a site.. The Park was great!.. Awesome private shore, & water beaches..Saw some dolphins, a few large ships, you do have to cross the dunes though.. only about 300 feet so not terrible..delt with a few biting flys, and ants..nothing a little spray didnt handle.. only a few miles from the Ocean Drive, and boardwalk, Overall Stay was great, but not so great for the Larger RV, or Rigs..

Vannah K

Absolutley beautiful camp ground. This is the way to go to the beach. Cheap sites with electricity and water. Sits next to Chesapeake Bay. Semi-private beach accessible from the campground. Quick and easy walk to the beach. Friendly staff. Camp store is expensive, but has everything you need in case you forgot something. Will be visiting again soon!!

Kevin Virgin

This place is awesome! The Beachside is very nice and clean. The actual Park itself and the trails are all very nice and interesting with lots to see. Staff is very friendly and helpful. I would highly recommend stopping here if you're in the area traveling.

Sharon Keith

It is on the Chesapeake Bay at night it is so pretty. You can see the Chesapeake Bay bridge tunnel.

Greg Hagwood

Great place to go on a walk or run. I recommend the week days to avoid the masses

Natasha V

Beautiful venue for events at night time! Sunsets are usually stunning here

John Penner

With a mixture of paved and Sandy trails, this is a great place to walk, run, or hike. Be aware of those on bikes and use trail educate and everyone can enjoy. During the week or early mornings are best for refused crowds. Great way to enjoy the outdoors.

Jeanette Humphries

My favorite go to place, when I am sad and happy. Calming and serene.

Madeline Bennetti

Beautiful area with cheap parking, easy walking paths, a little store, and bathhouses. We saw dolphins there. There's also a view of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and a few little peninsulas. It is a lovely beach that tends to get crowded with families, so definitely go for the whole day and stake out a good spot.

James Merville

Gorgeous views. Lots of trails and places for the family to hang out and spend time together.

sbby77 s

A beautiful place with lots of trails, cypress knees, bald eagles and spanish moss. Two areas of the park are beach, there rest is forest, dunea, trails and swamp. There are hiking and biking trails as well as a visitor center and a nature education center. There are campsites for campers or tents as well as cabins. There is a small store by the visitor center and public bathrooms in the 3 main areas of the park. Please understand that this is not the place to walk your dog off leash. PETS MUST BE ON LEASHES. This is for everyone's safety.....including your pet's. Beware of snakes and please don't litter.

dnshift1

This place is a great spot for locals. Very clean and safe, the water is warm. We enjoyed swimming in the water and as well as our pooch!

Mike Porter

Great "usually quiet" beach area. Warm weather weekends there are usually a lot of boats that come in and take up the beach. Gets crowded and loud music. Been run off by this many times. Disappointing because boaters didn't have to pay the park entrance fee that the rest of us did! Cooler weather though is much quieter with nice views and great walking trails.

David Robinson

Amazing campsites with plenty of shade. Tent camping offers enough parking room for a car or two. Tent sites feel semi-private, with good spacing between sites. Just a short walk from the campsites to the beach. Public beach access is along the calm Chesapeake Bay. Great for families with small children looking for a safe beach experience.

jessica weller

Huge and beautiful. So many trails, swamps, and beaches. This is my favorite place to run

Todd Bradford

We love camping here. Close to the beach. Awesome facilities. Great staff

Tami Gray

Absolutely Stunning! I drove thru this park and it is so beautiful. I had a great time. Its also where I went kayaking.

Sherry Kraus

Beautiful dunes and grass. Water was warmer than the boardwalk area beach. More 'wildlife' in the water. No very crowded. Dog friendly.

Shannon Bailie

Love the trails, both beach side and the wooded. Have not camped here myself but hear from friends that's it's great! Staff at visitors center very friendly and helpful! Very convenient to local restaurants and ocean front beaches and boardwalk.

Bill Bolton

Amazing in every way. The service at the visitor center is way above and beyond. If you have a chance to come and stay and camping is your thing...this place should be on your bucket list. Especially if you have kids.

Lydia Potter

Great beach that's not very crowded with nice facilities. One outdoor shower on your way from the (main?) beach and parking area that's also by a history and science educational building.

Jessica Lobert

Love bringing the dog here to walk the trails. Never have had a problem with other dogs being off-leash. Most people you see along the trails are super friendly. The trails are very well maintained too!

Lucy Reyes

I came to this beach twice last summer. If you get there early enough, you will find parking. The beach itself was awesome. My dogs loved it and we stayed no more than 2 hours both times we went.

Fred Kiesche

I have been here multiple times, both as a teenager and an adult, tent camping and cabin cabin. It's amazing that they squeeze so much nature into an area so touched by urban life. While some of the sites and cabins can be noisy at times when rush hour is happening, you'd be astounded how far into the woods you can get (especially when you string a few shorter trails together). Special shout out for the cabins, among our favorites to stay in.

Sweety Bhavin Vyas

We visited the state park last weekend & we explored only the beach area though they have campground & trails also but we were in short of time so nt able to visit everything. Beach was perfect my kids loved it. We got to see some dolphins also.

Johnny Aiki

Very very nice beach. Calm to no waves. Great trails. I saw crabs, a huge spider, a snake, and many large water birds all on the same path.

Holly Marrow

Absolutely LOVE this park! My campsite was beautiful and spacious and I had less then a 5 minute walk to the beach. Totally worth the 5.5 hour drive from SWVA and I'll definitely be back!

Patrick Walsh

We drove 5 h to go to First Landing State Park and on the way, I was not sure it would be worth it. However, it was a wonderful place. We were at a tent only site, with no water or power. I would suggest booking early, so you can get a site away from the highway. Even with that, the site was really very pretty, well-maintained, relaxing and the size was large so we were not close to other campers. It was a 10 min walk to the beach and not too crowded even on the weekend. Because it is a bay, it is ideal for young children. The have a little research lab that is open on Sundays where the kids can learn about the local habitat, fish and critters. On our visit, the park ranger was very helpful and knowledgeable about the displays in the lab. There is a Food Lion supermarket very close (0.5 mi), with a good selection of food, camping snacks and other camping necessities (wood, supplies, charcoal...). The sunsets were amazing and, after dark, the beach is filled with little crabs that the kids can chase around with flashlights. Overall, we are likely to go back, and I would be happy to spend a week at First Landing State Park. The only thing that bothered me was people not cleaning up after themselves at the beach. But that is no fault of the park. So if you go, please pick up your refuse (and maybe even something left carelessly by somebody else).

Krystal Sajjad

So close to the VA Beach boardwalk, but it feels like it's a world away. Gentle waves. Cute ghost crabs. Awesome if you want to go to the beach without getting stuck in stores half the day. Also Awesome camping experience. They have educational back packs that you can borrow to learn more about nature, native Americans, crabbing, fishing, etc.

Wendy Mitchem

Great location, large state park with about 200 sites. It's extremely popular and you should book months in advance for a holiday. I booked in August for Memorial Day. A quick 5 minute walk from our camp site to the beach. The beach is dog-friendly and folks did a great job with their pets. It wasn't a five star visit for us as we had to find someone to come and mow our site. While it's a large park, it was also a holiday weekend and seems like that should have been taken care of in advance. Based on the height, it hadn't been mowed in a few weeks. Other than that, no complaints. The camp host near our site was extremely friendly. The bath houses while older, were clean. It's right off of Shore Drive, so an easy drive to a few local restaurants and grocery stores. It's close to a couple of local breweries as well. We look forward to a return trip next year.

Ted Noah

Absolutely stunning park! Both the hiking trails and beach side are gorgeous natural areas. I found the beach to be very clean and not super crowded. Tons of beautiful seabirds including droves of pelicans. One might be lucky enough to find good shells or sea stones. The trails were immaculate and it seems most folks respect nature here. They are a mix of Boardwalk and dirt paths. So many different types of trees and even some Spanish moss! The education center is great for kids and adults, and teaches about the local wildlife and foliage. This is a great day for people of all ages, plus dog friendly. Peaceful and educational! The rangers I met are so pleasant as well. Five stars!

pete sinnott

We were here over 40 years ago with our children. This time we have our grand children. Still a wonderful place with many new additions! This includes a new name.

Dee de Cheubel

One of the best close to home beach experinces. You get the far away from the city feel but you are right in virginia beach. Parking, restrooms, and a gift shop at the beach with a 360 view.

Nice and quiet. We stay in a cabin every year and it’s really nice to be so close to everything including the beach

Areeje Ayyash

We come here every year, beach isn't super crowded and we can bring our dog. It's a great place to go.

Kevin Olidan

Was invited to camp here by Chruch-mates and we have to admit it was beautiful! Great camping areas which will need to be reserved. Parking was a little tough at times depending on the big surge of people going to the beach didnt have much trouble overall. Beach was clean and beautiful and family friendly. Entrance fee was not bad considering everything you can do here.

Been a favorite for years and years. Lovely drive through the woods to end up at the bay. I buy the annual pass to support the parks....WELL worth it.

Chris Belgrade

Always good place to go to get away from the oceanfront crowds can bring your dogs basically do what you want

Molly Stone

This is one of the loveliest state parks we've visited in the Mid-Atlantic neighborhood. The campsites are shady and private, the park office is huge, gorgeous, and chock-full of cool stuff to see and do, and the staff is friendly and knowledgeable. We're here for Labor Day weekend 2019 and though it is full, it is somehow still serene, quiet, and restorative. 5 wholehearted stars!

Josh Rose

We got two spots next to each other for family camping. There was plenty of room for privacy and easy access to restrooms. The bath houses were clean. We were able to watch the sunset from the beach access on the bay side. We will definitely go back.

Monkey Target93

A spectacular park and campsites. Enjoyed the beach as well the trails near by.

Drew Darby

We took the Chesapeon Kayak tour at the park and it was a lot of fun. Up close with dolphins, which are plentiful at the mouth of the bay. Also a very nice beach, especially with small kids. Very small waves.

Barbara Burnett

Beautiful well maintained and marked trails! I love the bald cypress trees! Blue heron, crabs, loads of frogs, turtles, dragonflies and butterflies.

Mike O'Brien

Wonderful place. Great trails. Fun hike. Wonderful way to get the kids outside. Dog friendly. Bike friendly. Great experience Everytime.

Jessica Bakas

Quiet, peaceful, serene lil' local beach with no waves to scare your kid while she makes sand castles. Keep an eye out for this year's impressive sea nettle jellyfish bloom.

Noah L Taylor

Amazing park with fun trails. My wife and I went here to escape from work for the day. It was so nice just to walk the trails with our puppy. Easy to get to and easy to navigate the trails. You'll see plenty of other people too, so this was a nice place to help socialize our dog. Saw some wild life and got good exercise. Would absolutely recommend for anyone!

I love parking here and going to the beach to walk, or parking down the road , and walking by the beach there, on my early morning exercise treks. It is so quiet and peaceful on that part of Virginia beach and it is very clean. Seashells and beach glass wash up here too, and the bay sunrise and sunsets are beautiful. My friends stayed at this campground this week, and one of their dogs loved digging for crabs, but would not go near the ocean. The other dog liked the water a little, but was not impressed with people and would try to bite their ankles. That is a good reason to keep your dogs on leashes at all times. The downside to this campground, is that it next to Ft. Story joint command Little Creek, Military facility and the seal team/military, may have training in the middle of the night, on occasion. The campground tells people this up front, so it is no surprise when it happens. They do not get notified ( naturally) so they have no idea when it will take place, so neither do the campers. My friends did not get much sleep one night due to helicopters training overhead, and another night, because of a crazy thunder and lightning storm, that came through around 3:30 am. They were ready to quit camping after all that, but absolutely loved the campground itself, and their campsite. The bath houses were nice too and were private. We all agreed before they went back home, that it is a good feeling knowing that the military trains like that, and is capable of keeping us protected. They work hard at preparing to do that,, twenty four hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. AMEN for our military men, women and their families.

Friendly staff, great camping spots, clean bathrooms. We love camping here and we always have a wonderful experience!

AnleshDangol

The park is well maintained. Loved that is so close to beach. And they have showers too.

Kim Alexander

Nice quiet back bay. Not alot of people nor kids. Got to see a pod of dolphin as soon as we got there! Best place to be if the main beach is full. If you're planning a trip to VA Beach, plan a day down on 64th street. It's just a 5 minute drive North. You won't be disappointed!! And between 330-500 is the best time to catch the dolphins. Enjoy!

Steven Walters

A great system of day hike trails well mapped and easy for all levels. Trails wind through Cyprus and swamps and pine forest. Most trails are handicap accessible.

Katy Pennington

We have hiked the trails here. We always notice something we didn't before and learn new things. The rangers are friendly and willing to answer questions.

Melissa Stoker

Costs about $10 to park, but the beach side is beautiful and well-maintained. The hiking side is also great. From the ranger's understanding the camp store no longer rents our bikes, so bring your own.

Sue Krafft

Haven't been here in about 30 years. Hasn't changed at all. Beautiful park with a beautiful beach!

Alan Nelson

Great location in Virginia Beach. First Landing State Park accommodates RVs to single tents. There is a wonderful nature center that offers education programs for school age children and scouting organizations. A beautiful setting right on the beach.

Jerry N.

The beach itself is nice but the outhouse at this park is not great. I've been camping at two other camp sites in my life and they both had pristine bathrooms. The bathrooms here were very dirty.

Danielle E

First Landing is beautiful- and huge! There are three entrances. These pics are from the park on the Bay side. There is also a massive park with walking trails across the street. That was two entrances (that do not connect).

I have been coming here since I was a little girl walking our family dogs, hiking, or bike riding with my Dad. Seashore State Park, is one of my favorite memories as a child through my teen years, and I have even brought my own son here a few times, when we are home for a visit. I love the moss covering the trees, it just feels special here. From the sand dunes, to the river, and all the secret spots my friends and I discovered, as kids. It's just a magical place, I keep close to my heart. Lots of parking, lots of hiking, tons to discover. Definitely make this park one of your stops next time you plan to vacation in Virginia Beach, it will not disappoint. There's also a visitor center, where you can pick up a map, and learn about the area.

Carl Thompson

This a really nice park. It has a historical display, beach access, hiking trails, and o ernight accommodations. Would gladly visit again. Apparently, it's the most visited State Park in Virginia.

Jennifer Zabe

Awesome family friendly park. Has something for everyone! The beach, fishing, grilling, trails.

douglas strait

Great place to camp. Cheap too and great beach. I got married there

Gabbie Bernier

My boyfriend arranged to have us stay here this August to relive his childhood experiences and share a piece of his childhood with me. We are from MA and it took 9 hours to get here and 9 back, but the ride was so worth the wait! This is the nicest campground I have ever been to! I had never been to Virginia Beach before and this was by far one of my favorite camping trips. So close to everything, 15 mins from the boardwalk and beaches, but so much more private and calm. Our campsite was a five minute walk to the ocean front and the water and beach did not disappoint! Beautiful water this time of year. It was 76 degrees! Clean beaches and very tranquil. Our camp site was clean for the most part. The only thing was the sand gets really hot during the day so we did burn out feet a few times. Sand surrounds the campsite which is really different and neat, but beware the heat and the wasps!! The days we were there were really hot and humid so camping was kind of a bad choice, but we made the most of it. Also it rained every afternoon pretty hard, and being in a tent didn't help. We bought tarps to cover our tent and it ended up just fine. Won't be camping in August there again though! The campground was quite and we'll maintained, my only complaint is the bathrooms/showers. They smelled like sewage all the time, the showers smelled gross and there were bugs and clumps of hair in the drains. I think they could use some paint and a different ventilation system. Other than that we really enjoyed our stay. This was one of my favorite vacations!

Dean Pomper

Beach was good. But I am a history buff so the info on the first landing is what I loved the best. However the bathroom needs to be bigger.

Christine Gurganus

Great family vacation spot! Rustic and clean living right in the forest! Can't get much closer to nature unless you tent camp. Here that is an option too! Only downfall so far is high season fishing has a bit of hunting to find good local spots.

Sam Robinson

Great trail for biking or hiking!!! Feels like a little oasis in Va Beach. The trails that are adjacent to the bay are excellent photo spots

tracy akers

Love it there. Great place to camp. Family and pet friendly, clean restrooms and campground! It's our favorite place to camp!

Kat Kadlec-Weir

A must see if you are from out of town. The history : The park is where English colonists first landed in 1607. Native American canoes, Colonial settlers, 20th century schooners and modern cargo ships have navigated the park's waterways. Its cypress swamps were a source of fresh water for merchant mariners, pirates and military ships during the War of 1812. Legend has it that Blackbeard hid in the Narrows area of the park, and interior waterways were used by Union and Confederate patrols during the Civil War. Built in part by an all African-American Civilian Conservation Corps in 1933-1940, the park is a National Natural Landmark and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. As Virginia's most-visited state park, it's an oasis within urban Virginia Beach. The park has 20 miles of trails and 1.5 miles of sandy Chesapeake Bay beach frontage. First Landing offers many recreational and educational activities and has many unusual habitats including bald cypress swamps, lagoons and maritime forest, as well as rare plants and wildlife. Cabins, water and electric hook-up campsites, picnic areas, boat ramps and a camp store with bicycle rentals are also available. The Chesapeake Bay Center houses historical and educational exhibits. It’s awesome!!

Kelsey Allen

The entrance fee was $7 (weekday) instead of $4 like the website stated, but not a deal breaker. Only got to check out one of the bike trails, but it was very nice and well kept. Stroller friendly mostly dirt path and not too busy.
