REVIEWS OF Colonial Williamsburg Historic Area IN Virginia

Rose Santiago

My family and I enjoyed our visit. It was very hot though. Would definitely make a trip back in the fall

Shawn Benningfield

The atmosphere and the hospitality of Colonial Williamsburg is amazing. Very authentic in every sense. I highly recommend everyone to take a trip to the Colonial Triangle area of Virginia.

Anthony Cooper

Williamsburg was amazing, the story behind Williamsburg and how it helped shape our Nation is vital to appreciate what we have. The tours are great and reasonable. With your tickets your invited to enter in many of the shops and houses their. Were they are dressed in colonial clothes and mimic the 1700's. We were impressed with how much there is to do in Williamsburg Colonial district. We plan on going back and taken our kids next time. Truly an amazing place to visit. And Yorktown and Jamestown are just a short distance away

Matt Bramble

A lovely mile by half-mile (3 streets), look at American life around the time of the revolution. The craft shops are functional and educational. Don't forget your military discount for you and family (50%, once a year).

Terrence

If you love history this place is great. I really feel like I was in that time with the characters walking around and the stores that have the old look. The only thing is the prices. Its $45 a person to go into some of the houses and alot of the buildings you couldn't enter had the windows blocked from the inside.

Shannon Armstrong

Came down for a week for a Teaching Program, it was wonderful! It really does make it seem like you are in the 18th century. I will definitely be back, I’ve heard it’s beautiful at Christmas time. Huzzah!

Donny Nuckles

Overall had a great experience here! All the staff was dressed in time period clothing and friendly. I have to say the staff that worked in the shops were really enjoyable to listen to (not a boring lecture or script) and appeared to really enjoy what they were doing which made the experience even better. Expect to walk a lot I recommend wear comfortable walking shoes. If you are going the summer months bring WATER! You can buy water here but everything is extremely overprice in colonial williamsburg. The next time I go I will be a packed lunch and plenty of water with me.

Sheridan Chandler

Love it down town. Great energy.. Nice looking places. All kinds of friendly fur babies to see and pet. LOVE LOVE Downtown.

Natalie Caron

Oh I love it So beautiful Relaxing even if very busy touristy place...just gorgeous

Schlotts Seafood

Our countries history! This town is beautifully kept! The homes are ALL nice and picked up. Merchants Square is clean and very easy to walk around. The shops are fun and the staff is very friendly.

Lisa Causer

As a disabled person ,this was not the place to go! When we got there we asked about a wheelchair rental and were told there were none available for the holiday. After walking as far as I could and asking several workers that didn't have an answer for me,I called the phone number and asked about wheelchairs.Iwheelchairs.I was told they had them in a different place. We asked if we could get a carriage ride back,no the stopped giving rides. Then there were protesters using bullhorns. We tried to go into a church and we're told no because a class of kids were in there.Tthere.Totally awful experience

Marihanna Euclides

Get ready to walk, carry lots of water with you, and get your most comfy shoes! It's also really hot, so wear light and bright clothing! Tour guides and events are fun, some get packed from time to time so you may need to go back and revisit those; didn't see any unique Colonial food (if they had it, I missed it), which is what I would have wanted to buy if they had it. Reenactment places, people, and buildings were so worthwhile! Grab a map, and take a full day to checkout everything!

Jayme Gulley

So much fun! Highly recommend going to a court case. We truly enjoyed the craftsmen! We also ate at the taverns which were pricey, but delicious!

Clee N.

Beautiful area ! The outdoor farmers market was perfect . All the restaurants with outdoor seating allowed dogs so we had no problem finding a table . I hope we can make it back again next year

Lancey Cunningham

Love this place. The maze was so much fun Not enough places to get water. The horses were to hot for our 11:45 carriage ride and were told to come back at 3:15 to find that it was too hot foe them to even be out. Some of the littel buildings were not open and thT was disappointing.

Stephanie Montalvo

This is a must see if your in the area. There is so much to see so allow plenty of time - Full day. There are plenty of food options as well. We ate at the Mellow Mushroom. It was a great choice.

Maggi Hall

If you revere history and democracy CW is a must visit. Start your children young and keep it up. They'll cherish the lessons and the family trips. Nothing hokie about CW. It's real...well almost! The learning experiences offered are broad and interesting and accurate. Step back int time to learn from our forefathers.

Domenica Stone

One of my favorite historical places to go in the USA. Bad part about off-season is not everything is open daily. Look for ticket discounts for here. Sometimes good deals.

Jessica Holmes-Adams

I was really looking forward to our visit as my 11 year old son enjoys history and had good experiences at other living history museums. Unfortunately, our trip to Colonial Williamsburg was a bit disappointing. Rather than the costumed soldiers marching around to drums and fifes and the tradesmen we had hoped to encounter, we were able to visit only the historic buildings. There were a few costumed employees/volunteers at the entrances, but it seemed they were checking for paid admission rather than providing a more dynamic experience. After only a few minutes, my son was bored and ready to leave. I forced him to walk around a bit, but he didn't enjoy his time there and I can't say that I did either.

Marie

Loved it but the heat is tremendous. It is a good place to share history with children. Unfortunately history has become a thing of the past. I truly believe that is a big mistake in our education model

Eryn Tribble

Lovely visit to well planned recreation of colonial environment. Includes actors in costume and role that are knowledgeable and skilled. Many tour and experience options including carriage tides, shooting of cannons, fife & drum parades, authentic food options at recreated taverns.

James Epling

Excellent as usual... always a great time

CARL WILSON

Awesome place. Good to get your walk on. Met some great Historians. Definitely go to the Wythe house and take the horse drawn carriage ride with Dan. He's the biggest driver.

joel rosiene

Nice walk. There was a farmers market in the morning which was worth a look. The produce looked good.

Angela Deane

Lots of history to learn. Beautiful upkeep. Employees are kind and friendly.

liz brunton

I really enjoyed our visit at the peak of a hot summer. I'd like to return when it's not quite so sweltering. My fears of this site be "hokey" were unfounded. Well put together, super informative docents who really seemed to enjoy their work, and beautiful spaces. I'd only note that the drivers of the courtesy buses are NOT all friendly. Some were quite surly. But that's my only quibble.

Jenn P - MrsP123

Much to do that could easily occupy you for a few days. It doesn't cost anything to walk around the streets and shops but you'll want a pass to get inside for demonstrations and fun.

Ocean Lover

Very beautiful and historic. It was really cool to walk around and learn the origin of some phrases and see buildings that are replicas of real colonial homes and shops. We had heard that all the actors were in character and that's what really drew us to come, but the actors said movie references and sometimes spoke normally.

D Loy

Wonderful visit, and people would live to come back again

LambrosGonzales

Very beautiful historical area!! This place has so much to tell.. it's giving you the feeling like you go back in the past and you can see how was that time.. if you are passing near the area it definitely worth to come and visit it at least once!!

Jessie McFarland

Took the family here for vacation from Oklahoma. This is an attraction that can last all day. This is a place you really need to see in person to appreciate.

Ana Alvarez

This place was great!! A big part of history here and plenty to see and enjoy. The best part is that it is free to get in. You only pay if you want to go inside the exhibits but we saw and live it all with out having to pay for the exhibits. Completely a must do here in Williamsburg. There are plenty of shops and restaurants to see as well.

Reid Griffin

Something for everyone. Great history lesson. Buy a Ticket and enjoy more and use the bus.

KD Carlton

I truly love, appreciate, and think that the Colonial Williamsburg Historic Area is a very special, interesting, beautiful, and unique place to visit. I have been to the Colonial Williamsburg Historic Area through out my life. When I was growing up my family came to the Colonial Williamsburg Historic Area many times from Chesapeake. Now that I live in Williamsburg, I have walked through the Colonial Williamsburg Historic Area many times. I will continue to visit the Colonial Williamsburg Historic Area when able to visit.

Colm Doyle

Super informative and interesting. Highly recommend

Martin Gudat

Williamsburg is worth a visit. We had so much fun there.

Anthony Rodas

Very cool place to visit, the historic interpreters really do a great job of bringing you back in time. They do a fantastic job of answering all questions, even some pretty odd ones from time to time. The Palace Gardens are an hour of exploration themselves. They really put a lot of care, dedication and practice into giving you a quality and educational experience. It is expensive, but any vacation spot will be and the admission was a fair price considering all the different things our simple admission paid for: the shuttle busses, the tours, the simple upkeep of the area. There's plenty of spots to relax and take a break between areas. And don't worry, all the buildings do have air conditioning.

Megan Prudhomme

It was pretty unfortunately you can't go into many places. It is 100+/person to do a "walking tour" which is you walk yourselves and can stop in at certain buildings and someone does a walking tour with you in the house/building. The time period shops are extremely overpriced. We did eat downtown at Mellow Mushroom which was really good.

Susie LaBarre

If you are interested in stepping back in time this village is a must see. The artisans explain the process for achieving the skills required to weave, dye yarn and fabric, print news letters, make shoes and on and on. Your taken back to a time when everything was produced by hand.

Emily Sanborn

Love walking this strip of colonial Williamsburg. It’s a charming mix of ancient/historical and young college town with William & Mary right there. Favorite spots are the Cheese Shop (the best place for a quick bite to eat) and the Christmas shop. The peanuts shop is also worth a visit!

Glen Wolters

I have traveled the world, yet there is no place I'd rather be than immersed in history as I walk the streets of Colonial Williamsburg. I highly recommend purchasing a pass and touring the plethora of living museums while you experience the birth of our great country come alive.

Nancy Caswell

If you enjoy learning this site is for you. Be sure to visit the Jamestown Island too.

MLB

Beautiful area! It is a great place if you love history, friendly staff and great museums. Even if you are not a history buff DoG street is a beautiful place to walk or bike and enjoy the scenery. Driving the Colonial Parkway during the different seasons is also very enjoyable.

Russ Barbee

I love history but this was boring. There's a barnes and noble on the outskirts and the shops outside the colonial bit I would return to but never to colonial Williamsburg. The highlight was moss on the roofs.

Judy Huemmer

It is fascinating to still be able to see the past right in front of me.

Sandra Snow

It was amazing, I learned so much. Will be going back again soon

Lawrence E. Harbison

Colonial Williamsburg is always a beautiful place to visit with your family. We typically come here in winter when it’s less crowded and there are no long lines. The recreation of the colonial buildings is well done and the tour guides in the homes are well versed.

Margaret Murphy

Our family has been vacationing in Colonial Williamsburg since we were kiddos. It’s a beautiful area with fun new exhibits to experience each time. The actress portraying Martha Washington is our current favorite! Food is great at the taverns. The haunted tour is a fabulous evening activity. Honestly the only thing that ever disturbs our visits are tourists, who get annoyed at how many other tourists there are. Yeah it’s crowded, because you & the rest of the world decided to show up!! Because this place rocks. So enjoy the gorgeous scenery and the random actors who stroll by while you patiently wait to get into another exhibit. Its totally worth it!!!

Jon Bolaney

No place like it in the states! I wish I had more time to spend there, so much history and the grounds are beautiful. I also think it's interesting that people actually own some of the houses in the area and live there, stopped and spoke with one of the owners and she gave me reccomendations for what to do and where to go. I will be back!

Brandon Willis

One of my Top favorite areas in Virginia. Tons of great little shops and restaurants as well as a wonderful farmers market on Saturdays. A wonderfully historical area of our Country and a great place to bring the family.

Mike Boardley

Beautiful area. Home to William & Mary College. The downtown area is filled with well manicured lawns, hedges and grounds. The colonial buildings are fun to see but after the first few they all look the same. I’m not a big shopping & dining type person which is mostly what you’ll find here. So while it was nice to visit, I could skip this in the future.

Sandy Cherry

A very unique place. Great for all ages. Alot of walking! You can walk the area with no ticket but to go into the buildings and learn about them a ticket is required. We didn't get it all done in 1 day. You can purchase the 1 day ticket for the next day the day before after 3 and get a couple of extra hours in that day. But we still didnt get to everything. I suggest not missing Bassett Hall. You can and should drive to it separately, it has its own parking lot right by it. Because of being a ways separated it doesn't seem to get as much traffic, but we loved it.

Joe Pascucci

A great place that should be seen by everyone. A real step back into history. Must see the Capital and the Governors Palace. It was a fun and interesting day.

Lisa Sanchez

Been here 3 times already. Never fails to amaze me, and there is always something new to learn and see. There are so many favorites here. All I can say is buy the pass and enjoy. We actually bought the annual pass because it was only a little not than the 3 day pass, but we got more behind the scenes stuff and got to come back the following year for more. I wish they didn't discontinue the Rev Quest. It really was great for the kids and adults alike, to experience history come to life like no other. Please bring that back!

Todd McCauslin

Great family vacation spot in the mornings before it gets too hot, followed by hotel pool before early dinner, and then finishing up the day at Busch Gardens amusement parks.

David Stull

More than just a beautiful walk through the gardens and arboretum. Many of the historic buildings are open for tours and activities that make coming back a different experience each season a must.

Bee Scott

A great day out, suitable for most ages. A shuttle service from the visitor centre is included if you purchase the day pass. FYI you don’t need to purchase a ticket to walk through Colonial Williamsburg, only if you wish to take inside tours and visit shops. Very realistic and fun environment, although I disagree with horses still being used in this day and age it isn’t necessary. They were extremely hot and uncomfortable

Dave Penney

Great to see some of our history being preserved and taught. This is a place where you can live history and see how things were done in the past.

M JH

Great historical site to visit. I learned a lot from the visit. I plan on returning.

ec s

The kids love the reenactors! And experiencing an earlier time.

Jerry Panza

.This place is great, the kids loved it. The staff are in character, while demonstrating their trades such as making fabric, metal work or or making medicine. The big hits were the governor's home and the jail. We had a very good meal within Colonial williamsburg. Well worth the trip. There is a fife and drum parade everyday, parking is free at the visitor's center

Steve Smith

Our family thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Williamsburg and the opportunity to connect with history through expert interpretation. We found the exhibits informative, the food delicious, and living history tour guides absolutely engaging and entertaining. We especially enjoyed interacting with our "living history" tour guides. They each demonstrated clear command of historical details and context, but really impressed us with the way they tailored their presentations to the audience, answering a wide range of questions from avid history buffs and more casual visitors. From adults to teens to little children, everyone at Williamsburg seemed to be laughing, curious, and, most importantly, learning something new. We loved experiencing a unique and engaging connection to one of our oldest national treasures. Williamsburg truly makes history come alive. Don't miss it!

Emma Ruch

Its a lot of walking but it is so much fun. All of the little shops and houses are educational in a super fun way. You can buy all kinds of things from old documents and newspaper articles to clothing worn during that time period. The restaurants are very good and the tours are even better. The carriage rides are super cool too. You can walk around yourself or go through buildings with a guide. Everybody is very friendly. Its a great place for family vacations. Such a cute place.

Sandy Dedmon

Allow yourself at least three days to see and experience a majority of Colonial Williamsburg. We have been here two days and still have places to see yet! If you are planning a stay of a week make sure to get the American Historical Triangle tickets. Jamestown Settlement, Yorktown Museum, Colonial Williamsburg, two museums and shuttle bus around the outskirts of Colonial Williamsburg for only $100 per adult. Daily admission is $49 per person at Colonial Williamsburg. The museums cost around $15. It is well worth it

Lauren Methena

Even on an "off" day (meaning the temperature never got above freezing so there weren't a lot of visitors - which is what we were counting on - and not everything was open), this place was magical! My children were enchanted with all the demonstrations they saw and got to try things with their own two hands! The interpreters were amazing! So knowledgeable and engaging! We ended up getting the annual pass so we can come back. Best way to describe this place is "endlessly fascinating."

M Diallo

Great family vacation! We love history and enjoyed every day being there! Ax throwing was fun

Haden Corbin

Great place to visit and walk around. We love taking the dog there as long as they aren't firing the cannon.

Lou Gardiner-Parks

Living history is awesome and Colonial Williamsburg is one of best places to experience it. Knowledgeable and friendly docents provide detailed descriptions and demonstrations of trades and life in colonial times. They continue to add more exhibits related to the native and African experience which is nice to see. Gunsmith, Governor's Palace (and gardens), Weaver, and Coffee house are some of my favorites but it's all great.

Tom Donnelly

Make sure that you are ready enable to do lots of walking, because that is what you will be doing. Interesting place to visit prices are through the roof and all the little shops, but then again I know you are on vacation. When I visited I did so much walking and ended up being in pain that I rented an electric scooter. Ask anyone who works there how to go about that, and they will assist you. Cost was $50 a day and they drive the scooter right to you. The cost of the scooter was money well spent. There is lots to see here for history Buffs. I will go again, but will rent the scooter at the very beginning and will not wait until I'm in lots of pain

Andrew Scott

Awesome place to visit. Make sure you plan for at min. 2 days and bring water with you during summer months as Williamsburg is hot in the summer months.

Sdc Clt

Fun. More parents should take their young ones here

Melvin Brennan III

Visceral in its educational experience for folks like me. See the "show" at the capitol; elucidating.

Gene Boyer

I was very pleased by the Improvements. The parking lots are big enough and they are very close to the visitor center which you do want to visit. You can walk to Colonial Williamsburg or you can ride their buses. They regularity circle Williamsburg and the visitors center. The tour guides or "reinactors" at every place are knowledgable. Loved everything.

Lindsey Wachtel

The whole place was really great experience , especially for the kids. But the prices! I feel like it definitely could have been a bit cheaper.

Chelle MToo

We love Williamsburg. It was the off season, so there's only one tavern open. But we still had a great time. REALLY enjoyed the coffeehouse, it's a great experience, as well as the Governor's palace, and...really all the recreations. Ask the concierge about an opportunity to shoot a musket at their range!!

Benjamin Milligan

Loved the trip into the past. Great way to learn of the old American way of life. $40.99 is a little steep. More like 25.99 for the trip.

Patricia Lutz

Always wonderful but very disappointed in Haunted Williamsburg. Experienced it much differently four years ago with real actors playing the role of ghosts. This was a real dissapointment

Diane Sackett

$45 for an adult admission. We turned around and left. This is a national historical site. All Americans should be able to visit at a reasonable price. Shame on whoever administers this national treasure.

Amanda Barry

Cool concept. A legitimate tour is quite pricey. My family and I just walked through on our own. We didn't get to experience going in all the buildings, but I felt that we still got a lot out of the experience. Each of the actors put so much into their roles. It's great for those interested in history.

Scott Webster

We like visiting this area. Taking the tours allows you to learn more about our history. Buildings and grounds are kept up wonderfully. This is a great vacation area!

Angela Morris

This is Paradise to who ever is interested in American History. Colonial Williamsburg is a replica to detail. Don’t spend money for the horse ride. Very pricy. Living in Williamsburg I am aware of a few benefits to the visitor. You can see enough without buying tickets. A must visit to the garden. It’s interesting and beautiful. There are things to play with as the kids played back then. It’s a beautiful wide street with no cars. Left and right cafes, fine restaurants. Shops and historical sights. Street shows and concerns free of charge. Make sure you wear comfortable shoes and have water. Virginia is hot and humid. Take a lot of pictures. You will be amongst people from every state. Last there’s an open market. Pricy. As a local I suggest to buy your souvenirs at Walmart. Berrets is a good and family friendly restaurant with reasonable prices. They fly the British flag except for one day. I will let you to figure it out. Have fun and welcome to Williamsburg.

Kyle Thompson

Great atmosphere and sights. A wonderful place to visit

Yeehaw 420

This place was horrible, it was kinda cool seeing the colonial buildings but after awhile they all look the same. We only saw a couple people dressed up and the people we did see just seemed like they didn’t want to be there. The stores were all the same and everything was incredibly overpriced and a lot of them were close. We tried to eat at the little tavern place but they made us stand outside at 9pm in the middle of February so it was freezing, whenever we asked how much longer it would be they were extremely rude, after about 2 hours of waiting we decided to go to cookout instead which was probably the best part of this trip. The experience was very gray and the overall atmosphere was very depressing. Coming in I was super excited after looking at the good reviews and I also just really love history, I was expecting to be transported to a different time period but I wasn’t. Would never come back

Jeff Berwick

Must see. A living museum. Great American history.

Rachia Cruz

My favorite place to visit. Steeped in living history, I just love colonial Williamsburg

Carlo Emanuele Barbi

It is a nice place to spend some hours. Yes they have shops, restaurants and you can dive into american history. Expected a bit more ... but it is nicely done. Prices are high for what you get.

Colin Barry

Beautiful grounds, interesting history, lovely people. Far too hot for my taste but I guess you can blame the colonists for that.

Enrique Gutierrez

It takes you back in time. The people giving presentations stay in character and give in depth information even once the presentation is over during Q&A. The shops explain how things were made, the importance to the city and make the goods. A must see is the Art Museum!!!!

Jessica Lynn Huggett

Great place to visit. My family and I have been visiting Williamsburg every few years for as long ad I can remember. Its great to see new exhibits with each visit. This year we brought my baby and toddler with us. It was quite stroller friendly as long as you don't mind leaving the stroller outside the exhibits. It is very easy to manuever a stroller around town, though. We always have a blast and enjoy taking in the history.

Chris Hale

Excellent place to visit. Every building has someone to give you detailed information about its history - all very knowledgable, patient and enthusiastic. The place is well cared for and clean. There are plenty of things to do and it is easy to spend a full day or even multiple days here. Easy to access with good available parking.

Cla 2090

Hot cider and warm gingerbread cookies! Queens cake is great too. Hit the bakery on Duke of Gloucester St. Look for Thomas Jefferson strolling down the road, he's always up for an intelligent discussion. Make sure to purchase a year long pass so that you can watch creations unfold throughout the year, wood carving by hand for furniture, linen being woven to back a horse saddle, and so much more. All, just as it was done back in the day. Love it here!

David Fowler

My wife and I went one year during an anniversary trip and we had a great time. We enjoyed each of the buildings and each of the reenactments. We enjoyed eating in the restaurants and getting the colonial experience. We took our kids back recently and while they enjoyed the same experience, I would recommend a different time than the heat of the summer. My wife and I also did the haunted ghost tour one evening and that was a good time as well. In my opinion, whether you are a history buff or not, this is a must see in Virginia, especially if you are in or around Williamsburg.

Heidi Jacks

Williamsburg definitely exceeded my expectations. I was in admiration with how beautiful it was, they keep all the gardens and buildings meticulous. Everywhere you look people are dressed in 18th century attire, horse and buggies passing you on the streets. They don't allow outside traffic so you really feel as if you are a part of that time. The staff is very friendly and informative. My group loved the cry witch trial and the night time ghost tour. I will definitely be back!

Dustin Horton

One of my favorite vacation destinations. Incredible and meticulous in every detail. The workers here simply know all there is to know about colonial life, especially the tradesmen and women. It's a joy to visit here always. The best time to visit is Halloween through Christmas, as they have special displays, exhibits, and tours you can take that aren't offered other times of the year. If there were six stars to give, I'd give them to Colonial Williamsburg.

T V

This place was cool. Just a bit expensive.

David Adams

Wonderful scenery and actor. Friendly shop staff as well worth every penny.

Dennis Derstine

Fantastic place to visit. The history is amazing, couldn't believe how much I had forgotten.

DC 111

A wonderful experience for any history enthusiast. Like time traveling back to the 18th century. Set aside at least a full day to explore this beautiful little gem.

Spider Webb

We go there very often. Go there to walk around and have dinner afterwards. Exercise and dinner. Its been safe to walk day or night.

Michael Charlotte

Such a great place to see preserved history. The imagination can run wild with ideas and thoughts of how vibrant the are was once upon a time many many years ago.

Will Valentin

Excellent visit. Definitely worth it to get here early in the morning and purchase tickets so you can see all the more in depth historical locations and discussions.

Lambros Lambrou

They don't let little pets (3lb dog) in buildings even if they are in a carrying bag...and of course they let you know after you buy the ticket. The area is nice but if you are from Europe, such an environment is quite an every day landmark. A nice place to visit if you haven't visited Europe or more specifically England.

Dave Lang

An incredible re-creation of Colonial history that has so much to do for anyone of all ages! This is an experience not to be missed!

Vicki Eberly

Beautiful and educational. The costumed presenters no longer pretend to be in that time. But they do explain well historical facts. Well maintained.

Rhonda J

Nice area and old homes. If you plan to do extra evening tours like the haunted one, buy tickets early they get sold out.

Brian Stone

The buildings in Williamsburg fall into two major categories: 1. Original buildings that have been magnificently restored, or 2. structures that have been rebuilt on their original foundations, to the exact specifications of the original. The architecture and the craftsmanship is absolutely fabulous. Even modern conveniences like eateries and restroom areas are in old world buildings that have a room or two modernized for today's society. The demonstrations of daily life in Colonial Williamsburg run almost continuously, so you can come and go between the various building and demonstrations as you please, so you never feel rushed or pressured to be at a certain place at a certain time. Can be done in a day, but allow yourself two to get the most enjoyment out of it.

Lewis Wasserman

I have been visiting and supporting CW for over 30 years, and it keeps getting better. It’s a living history museum completely restored to the 1770’s, around the time of the American Revolution. Most trades are represented, such as cooper, blacksmith, weaver, milliner, apothecary (my favorite), and a host of others. They recreate the activities of daily life as they were in colonial times, and you can witness court proceedings, speeches, and all kinds of presentations. If you want to see history come alive, you want to visit CW! Also, make sure to get a reservation at the King’s Arms Tavern for a real colonial meal served by candle light.

Katlyn Hippensteel

We had a terrific time in colonial Williamsburg. Everyone working there truly cares about preserving the stories and the history of it and are very passionate about how they convey those events. The smithy, governor's palace, and state house are all very fun places to explore. Also make sure you are around the town square at 5 for the fifes and drums!

Mark Ferguson

Great place for a Summer vacation for 12 and 13 year olds and up. Busch Gardens, Water Country USA and other Civil War Battle Fields are around. I have fond memories as a child in Willamsburg.

Ofer Orr

A must place to visit and learn more about early American history.

Jack Lansford

Awesome place tremendous history definitely a must see if you are in Williamsburg.

Danielle Goodrum

Ive been 6 times and still have been unable to visit all of the homes and speak with all of the live reenactors running the various historically accurate trade buildings and homes. I absolutely love this place. Maybe trip 7 will be the one ill finish on. Im thinking not as i saw signs saying they were restoring additional buildings. Id definitely have to go back once thats completed.

Richard Ambrose

A little high prices for what you have to get. That said, if you have interest in history and especially the colonial time period it is still worth checking out. For a better deal and since one day, such as what I did, may not be enough to enjoy it and take part of scheduled activities a multi day ticket may present a good value. It is well kept grounds and there seems to be pride from the person's working there to keep it attractive. A different class and expectation compared to amusement parks with trash and odors. Make time to see the Governor's Palace and Capital where our presenters had good knowledge, input and wit. If you have someone that doesn't get around we'll be sure to either get an electric scooter at the tourist center or have them stick to sites along the shuttle bus line which just travels the outer perimeter. They let us bring some of your own water too.

Haylee's World

Came as a child with my parents and loved it and now I'm here with my daughter and I LOVE IT ☺️

Erkan Saka

This was one of the largest open-air attractions I have ever seen. Basically, all the town is preserved. Lots of informative boards around. Nice walking opportunities all over the town.

Taylor M

This place is awesome, all the workers are wearing of 18th century clothes and they have tours, shops, taverns, horse drawn carriages and reenactments. Truly an amazing place you cant spend just one day here, the trade shops were are personal favorite they have shoe making, leather working, paper making, book making, tinsmith, silversmith, tailor, wig shop, post office, clothing store (you can actually buy the clothes!) And they do it all like they did in the 18th century, the people are actually apprentices learning the craft it's quite amazing. They also have hotels and bed & breakfasts that look 18th century. Were going back soon. Enjoy your trip to the past in Colonial Williamsburg!

Lots of kids activities. The actors really try to engage the kids and make sure that they are enjoying and learning something. In the Wythe house there are activities and games for the kids to do. The sister house is on the Powhatan Plantation resort

Let me just start off by saying Colonial Williamsburg is a great experience for those who love history and want to see it come alive. The shops, restaurants, and historical landmarks are all incredibly well done and I couldn’t recommend them enough. However, the reason I am giving 3 stars is because of the sheer lack of ADA training and understanding of people with disabilities among the staff. Though many of the staff members were nice people, it seemed as if none of them truly understood how to handle the child in our party who is disabled. Simple terms didn’t seem to register and things that we never had issues with before became issues during our visit, which at times made us feel singled out and humiliated. The whole historical area itself isn’t too ADA friendly since the cobble stone and brick sidewalks and streets make it difficult and cumbersome to maneuver a stroller, especially one made for a disabled child. All in all, my recommendation would be to go if you are not traveling with people in your party who are disabled until Williamsburg gets a better grip on their training and ADA accommodations. Otherwise, go and enjoy yourself!

this place is nothing like my group expected, staff was unfriendly and barely said hi or talked to anyone in general while we were expecting re-enactments of historical conversation, accents, and lively performances. informational tours are mostly political conversations, which i would suggest for college students or others studying. NOT good for kids, tourists, etc.

The Colonial Williamsburg Historic Area visit was an amazing example of history coming to life. See first hand how people lived in those days and how the community was formed. To tour the buildings in Colonial Williamsburg, you must stop at the Visitor Center and purchase tickets or exchange online tickets for passes. The walk to Colonial Williamsburg is approximately half a mile from the visitor center. You may take a tram to the Colonial village at not additional cost. The Governor's Palace was the heart of the town. It was believed the governor should have a large home to show wealth and strength. A guided tour of the Governor's Palace was informative and also had amazing architectural designs. While you will likely take a self-guided tour of Colonial Williamsburg and many of the buildings; other buildings will only be available to view as a guided tour (included in cost of admission). This includes the Governor's Palace, Capitol, Courtroom, a tavern and several other buildings. The presenters are knowledgeable about the history of the building and the time period. Some are very detailed with the presentation. I would give yourself 15 to 40 minutes per building as a guided tour. You may choose to take a horse-drawn carriage tour of Colonial Williamsburg to experience Colonial days. Tickets for a specific time must be purchased in advance at the Visitor Center. While streets are closed to automobile traffic in Colonial Williamsburg, roads from the city of Williamsburg connect to Colonial Williamsburg. You may enjoy a visit to a gift shop or one of several taverns opening for lunch and dinner in Colonial Williamsburg without an admission ticket. An admission ticket will be required to tour the other shops, businesses and houses in Colonial Williamsburg. Some of the buildings are handicap accessible, but others are not. Some buildings may only be accessible on the first floor. Ample restroom facilities and beverage stations are available throughout Colonial Williamsburg.

I love that this place exists so close to my city. I would like to live there

It's a nice historical area, with lots of people recreating authentic trades. However, it's also very much a tourist-friendly area, with air-conditioning in most buildings and a lot of shopping and extra-cost activities such as crafting and Ace throwing, etc.

I’m giving this rating based on the value of the ticket price and what you get. The Historical area buildings were largely closed. There is minimal to none handicap or baby stroller access. It’s not like the colonial Williamsburg of the past there were hardly any characters of the time period walk-in around . Many of the little time period shops were closed! They closed down the old post office, and a bunch of other places. Even after you buy a ticket.. it’s extra to pay for Ghost walk, carriage rides, etc. don’t bother with a ticket! Just walk up and down the historical part in the evening for the prettiest effect. Google the history! Merchant square is really fun and pretty at night also! Great restaurants and Bakeries, coffee shops , etc. the only reason I put 2 stars was for the two Museums. The Folk Museum and the (Rockefeller’s little house) I can’t remember the name. We even got the military rate for tickets.. and I want my money back. CW needs to really get their act together. Again.. nice to walk around.. waste of money on tickets you need to enter the lame buildings.

Nice culture lesson for the civil war. Well kept environment and traditions for generations to come.

I attended a tour of the colonial site on Saturday, 3 August. Our tour guide was Ms. Janice Canaday. She was an exceptional tour guide was easily, and is probably the best tour guide/ lore master I have personally encountered on plantation life. she had the guests engage the environment within context and on a deeper personal level. I strongly recommend any rural-based or black guests to request her as a tour guide.

I only had a day to visit this place. It was lovely. The artisans were informative and polite. The items they sold there and some where quite expensive, but very lovely and quite interesting. There are different types of snack and food that are very good. The food items are interesting as the place itself. They have a colonial band that plays music through the area which is very pleasant. There are many tours for each building, the only down side some of the buildings were not open on certain days, which does not suit someone who is only there for a day! All buildings should be open if the site is open! When you arrive they have you watch a short video, but I thought it was boring and just walking onto the site, they have carriage rides but you have to book it early in the day or you won't be able to book it! The "show" at the end of the day is kind of boring for my taste and I left half way through. The GPS had some trouble working when you get to Colonial Williamsburg , so be careful when you leave, a wrong turn could have you lost in the endless forest surrounding the site! Over all , it is a treat but too much to take in one day.

That is my most favorite place to visit! I walk, enjoy history and it is so peaceful! The minute you get there I feel like I time traveled. People working there are so friendly, very helpful, and very educated.

We loved our day visit to Colonial Williamsburg! Our children, ages 7 and 4, had a great time learning, playing, and exploring. They claimed the brick-making, play yard and theatre production to be their favorites. We also did the Jr. Ghost Tour and thouroughly enjoyed the stories and history we took from it. Everyone from ticket sales to costumed characters were polite, helpful and genuinely enthusiastic about the town. We can't wait to go back!
