REVIEWS OF Hole 'N' The Rock IN Utah

Tarl Lambson

I've seen a few rocks with holes in my time, but nothing compares to the wacky, off-the-wall adventure that awaits for those curious, thrill seaking travellers who dare stop at Hole 'N' The Rock! The whole experience (pun intended) may be something you'd come to expect straight out of a National Lampoon's Vacation film, but they also feature handmade pottery from a local artisan that is nothing short of incredible. So pull on your cargo shorts, jump in your flip-flops, don your nicest Hawaiian shirt, and stop in to treat your eyeballs to an experience that is uniquely - Hole 'N' The Rock!

Mallory Lyman

We went soon after they opened in the morning and the animals were very interactive. We bought the bucket of food and our kids loved feeding the animals. The home built in the rock is really interesting and our tour guide was very knowledgeable about it. It was also fun to look at all of the unique items around the property.

Jason Flores

This place is very unique! Lots of very interesting things, ideas, and props, alot are funny but also have to do with history. Can go on a 15 min tour, or just walk around, lots to see, has a zoo for the kiddos, gift shop to buy souvenirs, and also quench your thirst! Some handmade crafts are totally awesome, someone or somebodies have a very unique talent! Worth the time to stop and just take in the scenery and stretch your legs.

Donald Thurlo Jr

Great place for Adults and kids to visit and explore

Mindee Brewerton

If you are looking for something a little different this is it. Short tour of a house built into a rock. Petting zoo but you have to pay separately, so we didn't do that. However house tour was cool. A lot of cool things around to look at as well

Mark

After 12 years of driving by this stop, my daughter, wife and I finally stopped. It didn't let us down. Really cool, kind of cliche roadside stop, but I enjoy these types of places. Awesome staff, and a lot of other things to look at besides the house. They even had a petting zoo and store. I may even go back a second time.

Shane Plunkett

6.25.19 at 2pm we had just finished a tour with a nice lady and were browsing the gift shop when a man whom i suppose was the manager, who had just come in from smoking a cigarette next to the door, starts chewing out his employee at the cash register and kept saying the same things over and over as we are standing ten feet away. I intervened and told him this is not the place to have this conversation and he argued back with me that this was his place and hed do what he wanted. We paid for our things the kids picked out to not upset them and he continued to say things sarcastically under his breath. We dont reccommend this place with service like that. We would love to talk to an actual owner, this guy definately wouldnt be running my business.

Donnie Chester

This place is cool. Nice history behind it. Its amazing the way they dug this place out into a home.

Papahouse Grandma's house

My grand kids loved it now they ask if we can go every time they come to town

Shyloh Meyer

Super cool place, we stopped just because we were passing through and needed to stretch our legs, ended up staying over an hour!

Dan Collins

Kids and I loved petting zoo. Other stuff, not as much.

Brian Young

Well worth checking out take the tour it's well worth it

Brent Moser

It is a hole in the rock! But it was still a fun stop, the zoo was super cool and the random art was fun, if you are driving by ,its worth the stop , our second time !

Michelle Massee

This place is AWESOME!! A must see if traveling past.

Jodie McNutt

What a neat place and story! We enjoyed it. Nice staff too. Gorgeous backdrop of natural scenery. Wish they had picture souvenir books to purchase, because no photo taking in the quick tour.

Cynthia Hausen

Really cool place. More people should learn about it

Jolayne Thompson

It’s incredible.. a place you must stop at.

Edward Fierro

Awsome liked very much

Pieter Saris

Fun place, lots of interesting things here for an hour or two of time. Not super expensive and not cheap either... (would give 5 stars if tours and zoo were both Included) Small Petting Zoo was under $30 for a family of four with a bucket of food. (BUY TWO OR THREE BUCKETS) it is really fun to feed all the animals. Very memorable.

Fabe Medeiros

A cute little place.. Has a pet restroom area..

Michael Gennaro

Very cool, lots of old furniture and history. And a creepy horse.

Tarna Jones

Decent pit stop. It was close to where we were. Lots of interesting and cool odds and ends. The "zoo" was less than I expected and a little sad. Would have been satisfied without visiting the zoo. Also did not tour the house, but all the cool stuff outside was free for the kids and I to walk around and look at. And THAT was worth the stop. Wouldn't go out of my way, but if you are in Moab vicinity anyway, worth a visit! The stores (there are 3) have neat stuff too!

Antonio Aguilar

Awesome little spot to check out if you are in the Moab area.

Parker Goodwin

Such a fun place to stop on a road trip. Take the time to go through their little zoo. We paid extra to feed the animals and interact with them. As an adult I felt like a little kid trying something new. The staff are nice and helpful, animals happy and healthy and the facilities are well stocked and clean.

Harry Grace

Your typical American road trip tourist trap. Nice people.

Armando Garcia

Such a cool place to visit with alot of history and a awesome story it's a great place stop by on any trip.

Alyssa Malan

It was incredibly boring, and you are not allowed to take pictures, you have to buy pre taken photos. everything was over priced. And why would you by arches national park things there when you could just go about 25 miles, get the same thing for less, and that money goes to the park instead of back to whoever owns this place.

David Pazoff

Very cool, eccentric tourist trap. Interesting history and TONS of trinkets and souvenirs to pore over.

Johnny ????

Cool place.. the kids loved it!

kim anglemire

Way cool place to check out. The tour is only 12 mins. But you'll be amazed and want to know more.

Joseph Whetton

This is a great place to visit well worth the time to stop and have ice cream and look around

Stacey Mitchell

This was such an amazing place! We found it by accident just driving down the road on the way to the Mesa Arch. The outside has neat old stuff all over. You can walk all around and look at everything. There are a couple little gift stores. The real exciting thing was seeing the 5000 sq ft hole in the rock that is a house. We took the tour and I would really suggest taking the tour and seeing the inside of this house made from blasting out this rock. It was $7.00 and lasted about 11 minutes. It was an awesome tour and the girl was really knowledgable about the house. The stories were all so amazing. The only thing I thought was odd was that when she started to tell a story of how the husband painted a picture of Jesus, she stopped herself and just said her husband painted "this picture" for his wife. She was very religious. We weren't sure why she didnt say "Jesus". It was a picture of Jesus. Everything inside was left exactly as it was in 1974. They dont allow you to take pictures and I'm not sure why. I bought their little book that tells the story of how this rock became a house. It's just a little paper, black and white book. I found some pictures online to post because I thought if you saw these amazing pictures you would want to go see it even more. It is so worth it!! We spent maybe 30-40 minutes here.

A J

I think it was really cool for young and old

Kip

Great little place! Interesting and the grounds are beautifully kept!

Ronald Prothero

This is a nice place to stop and take a look while you're taking a rest from traveling. I gave it 5 stars because it is a good stop and everyone should see it. We have been making this stop for many years but you can see that it has got ran down a bit and is in need of being freshened up. It's amazing to see the inside the living area of the rock (hole in the rock) a d how this was dug out and maintains a comfortable temperature inside.

Lone Eclipz

AMAZING! Absolutely amazing! The area is absolutely historical and the petting zoo was fun too. Albino Raccoon was adorable. Fun place to take the family for travel. If your any where close GO HAVE SOME FUN!

Victor B.

Great little place to stop by for a break on a long road trip. Zoo is small but kids loved it and it's pretty inexpensive.

Hilary Burgess

Love this place. They have really made it nice for tourists. There are so many interesting parts to the property. The gift shop is standard fare but worth the stop. They had peeled off the Sell By dates on some food gifts, so watch that. I bought some Tom Selleck magnet thermometers because they cracked me up. Good family stop and cheap.

JEWELS Healy

Hole-in-the-rock was an adventure I love looking at all the little statues and signs and funny little puns and things around the park we didn't go into the zoo but the people coming out said it was fantastic that had small children you can feed the animals I believe the food is included in your ticket price for 4:50 it says come feed us so you go in and you feed the animals they have pot-bellied pigs amused you're not a giraffe a llama they have quite a bit of animals that are that you can Feed & Pet in touch and look at the house tour was amazing if you've never been inside the Christensen home do yourself a favor and go to war it I don't want to say anymore cuz I don't want to ruin it for you definitely worth the six bucks the shops are fun to

Brandyn Parker

Awesome spot when you want to get out of moab! Magical atmosphere and great staff. After you check out the hole in the rock go see lori at the petting zoo. It's clear these people truly love the animals!

Wanda Soel

Loved coming here every time I would visit my Dad

Marisol Sosa-Vigil

Shawna was awesome! Tour was short but very interesting. I enjoyed it and it was so adorable in there. May the Christensen's RIP! The animal farm is a must. Get alot of buckets to feed them :) so much fun!

Rhonda Stephens

This place is neat and has a very interesting history. The original owners and builders are buried on site. 5000 square foot home literally in the rock.

Amy Davidson

Definitely worth stopping at. Cool place!

Von Neilson

Always a fun tourist trap to visit. Don't need to spend money of you wish.

Journey To Whole

Very interesting and fun place to see. You get a tour of the home that was built inside the rock as well as a fun little petting zoo and three gift shops. The people working the tour new a lot of information but it would have been nice to have a bit more hospitality.

Richard Frame III

This place is truly unique! A home that was literally built inside a mountain.. who does that?? Well, apparently these folks did.. and in fine fashion.. if you go, take the 12 minute tour.. won't set you back much.. also, there are no photos allowed inside

Jake

Do the tour! It's worth every penny. It's amazing how the house was built into the rock. We also loved all the trinkets and folksy stuff around the property. Great place for a rest, to relax, get a snack, and take in the scenery. And the house tour is amazing!

Ruben Martinez

Ahh nice place to take the family. Lots of pics.

Deborah T

Petting zoo,ice cream cones,so many unique things to see and do!!!

Pamela Chandler

I have been here many times. It is a cool place

Margie Olivarez

Perfect spot to rest.. shop and learn about this place. . I found it very interesting..and ifnu have time take the lil.tour through thier home.. a place well worth the 4dollars. I even bought the book..

Debbie Ricketts

A quirky little stop. Enjoyed looking at all the yard art. Skipped the house tour.

Victor Olvera

Not what I expected. The tour was really fast. It was def unique, but I don't think it's worth the tour cost.

Christopher Brooks

I thought some of the gifts in the shop on the left (the hole in the rock shop) were very reasonably priced. Overall a really cool stop Edit- I thought some of the stones I was buying were local to the area...only to peel off the price tag at home to discover a ‘made in Pakistan’ tag. Maybe some are local, but not what I bought.

Andrea Smith

I love the animals at the zoo, they are so cute and friendly!! The store and tour were great.

Neil Cooper

Nice tourist trap ok for a walk around get some photos and move on

Karrie Meacham

This place is so cool. Been there a few times and always notice something different every time. So much to see.

Sharina Cluff

Recommend anyone who has time to go. Very awesome!

Cody Hartman

It's a neat place to visit, the zoo was fun and the animals were cute.

Brandon Groce

Totally campy and cheesy but kind of what I was looking for. Zoo was fun. Didn’t pay for the tour.

Perry Trujillo

Great little area to pull off and stretch your legs if you are on a road trip through the area! They have a ton of neat art in the area and it's set up like a cute little town. They have a few shops and a ton of different souvenirs if you are looking to pick one up! I have been stopping here since I was a child and it has evolved nicely. A cool landmark with an interesting history.

Kimberlee Lanae

Fun little place to stop and see. Definitely a tourist trap and will charge you for the tour to see the actual home. Has a couple little shops and a zoo. Thought it was fun seeing it for the first time but I dont think its something you really need to do more than once every 10 years.

Jenna Prizer

Awesome ice cream and cool history. I think the tour is not a good price, but it is a good pit stop.

Kristen Robinson

You got to stop. It's an odd place, pay the $6 fee and see the house. The guide doesn't really allow you too take a deep look because he has to get it done in 12 minutes.

Ashley Douthit

The Hole in the Rock is a cute little Place to explore, they have a petting Zoo with quite a few little animals and a 5000 square feet house in the rock which you can tour in about 15 minutes. Very unique little place. Bring some cash for souvenirs, petting Zoo and the house Tour

Kevin Hadley

Very interesting tour and cool people

Rob Bassler

It was a great place to visit on a hot day!

Victoria Snow

This place is wild, a good old fashioned tourist trap definitely worth talking the house tour just to see the taxidermied horses and the zoo is great for kids

Devin Abbott

Freaking cool place. The house is built into a rock. The staff is really friendly and the tour is a lot of fun. It's about 12 min. Definitely a must if you are in Moab. It's only 16 min away.

Ashley Melton

I like the story behind the hole in the rock and the memorial on the rock. I also liked that next to it was a little zoo with ice cream.

Chelsea Seigneur

This used to be a great stop on our way to Lake Powell every summer as a kid but it seems like it's really fallen into disrepair and not much to the gift shop and zoo. Overpriced for what it is.

Michelle Fradella-Barfuss

Interesting place! The gift shop needs to update their merchandise, though.

Marquita Gallegos

2nd time there love this place. The tour guide lacked knowledge of the historical facts couldn't answer questions.

Stacie Fleischer

This spot is pretty fun to stop at, especially if you have been in the car for a while. The tour of the hole in the rock is nice and short and pretty interesting. Not a whole lot to do here but still a fun little spot to stretch your legs and learn some history.

Steve Mcc

It's a pretty nice place, but remember no pictures inside the gift shop.

Kerry Morris

LOVE! This is an absolute must see! Don't just drive by, be sure to stop there is so much to see it's so interesting and so awesome I loved it

Kathy Ausmus

This is a fun place. All kinds of old Western objects with a gift shop and small petting zoo. There is a tour inside which shows how it was made and who lived there. One little place as a must see.

Amy Diesen

Very interesting history! Loved the house tour!

Eric Garza

Pretty cheesy. Not worth the stop. Hoped for better.

Karoly

Nice place to stop by and spend some time. Kids will find funny things around and you can take some photos as well. They have a 12 minute tour inside the built in rock house. Use the souvenir shop to attend it.

Jane Kemner

My husband's family is from a nearby town. On our way back home we stopped here and had so much fun. Hole N" The Rock is definitely worth going too. I love the house. The creativity of a home in a cave inspires me. If the home were for sale to live in I'd try my very best to convince my husband to buy it:)

Jamie Gray

Very touristy, but worth the visit. Cute shops, awesome sculptures and exhibits outside, which are free. You can pay to take the tour of the house inside the rock and visit the petting zoo.

Erik Edge

Such a fun and quaint place to bring my daughter! She absolutely loves to go there to see and feed the animals and have an ice cream!

Mary Post

Amazing history, Gorgeous views, many trinkets and gifts for the area. Small petting Zoo for a nice little change on the trip. Definitely cannot miss it!!!

ruby flores

Cute spot.. the animals are even cuter. Great stop

Daniel Turnbow

Great place to hike and get some ice cream

Andrew and Morgan McAllister

Neat stop for us. “Touristy” but it was a nice change of pace. The tour could have been more detailed I think, but it’s supposed to be short.

Amanda Rivero

I've being looking at a post card of this place for over 30 yrs and have always loved it. Finally as an adult I was going. I and had my kids & jumped on the opportunity to take them. The House is Awesome 5 stars on that!!!! So neat and cool with a great tour guide. However I think it's absolutely crazy you cant tak pictures in the house or gift shop PERIOD!!!! Ummmm.... I paid that much to not even have a picture of the experience. I dont understand what that would hurt. You go to The Mesuem of Natural History they doen prevent you from taking pics? In this day & age me posting pics of my experience will encourage others I know to take the time and stop to experience it. 2 other things for only 3 stars.... I think their gift shops need more stuff & better quality items. Lastly... we loved the look of the property & took pictures. However that's a windy area and a massive wind storm came through the center gulley by the jail. They have a bunch of cactus' and the wind just impaled my kids with thornes everywhere. I hate pants and a top on that protected me. But my kids were in T's & Shorts. None the less not a fun Mom/Kid moment, but we still loved this place it just needs some help is all.

THE FLAT - SPOT

This place was pretty entertaining. It's worth a stop and take the tour. The lady running the tour was pretty board with life but the house is pretty impressive.

Eddie Salaz

If you're in the area, its worth the quick stop.

David Bullock

Nice place to stop. Great people there. Perfect place to pick up a moment of your trip.

Jason Ford

This is a very cool place to stop and see all the amazing art work

Michaela Goyen

Quick tour but worth it!

sarah jessica

Awesome spot to check out! Cute little general store and a yard full of vintage memoribilia.

Lois Miller

Cute! Not the friendliest staff though.

Mark Petersen

This is a fun place to stop and take a break.

Frank Button

Gift shop lacking. The price for the tour a little high but it is neat glad I went

Patty Briant Elliott

This was interesting, I enjoyed the tour through the 5000 Square ft. House built under a huge mountain of rock.it had no heating system or sir conditioning because the type of thick rock it was built under keeps the temp between 65F and 72F year round. The tour runs when they have sold three or more. No long waits to take a tour. We did not eat there. Service we did experience was good. People were friendly, nice gift shop too.

Jean Drejø Hansen

Amazing experience that you should not miss going by on the highway to Moab. The place is a nice rest, where you can buy refreshments and souvenirs and even a nice cup of fresh coffee. But most of all, don't forget to take a guided tour of the amazing home and former restaurant which has been drilled and blown into the rock. This is something you don't see anywhere else. Don't miss this experience! It's worth your time ❤

Denetria Penfield

Cool little stop. Fantastic ice cream. Neat little petting zoo. Great place to stop and stretch your legs during the drive!

Celeste Ruppelt

Hole in the Rock is an obvious tourist attraction going north on US Hwy. 191 just past La Sal Junction. I was a bit curious so we decided to stop, hoping to find a shady place to have our picnic lunch. The story is quite interesting: This historic 5,000 square foot home began taking shape almost a century ago by the Christensen family. It began as a small cave alcove for their young boys to sleep in at night, and grew into a man-made engineering marvel 20-years in the making. What evolved grew into a complete underground home, featuring items that one would not expect to find in such a place, including a fireplace with a 65' chimney, 14 rooms arranged around huge pillars and a deep bathtub built into the rock. Although both Albert and Gladys are now deceased, their original furnishings, Albert's paintings, Gladys' doll collection, and many of the tools used to create this home are on site. In a 12-year period, Albert excavated 50,000 cubic feet of sandstone from the rock, building his home and also working on some of his other works of art, including the FDR bust on the home's exterior wall. Albert died in 1957, but the home was not quite as he would have liked it. Gladys, in keeping with his wishes and lifelong dreams, continued to develop the property, opening a gift shop and giving tours of her home until she passed away in 1974. Gladys and Albert are laid to rest in a small cove within the rock near the home. The is also a petting zoo, a gift shop, and a small store. There is ample, but sun scorched parking. We did not find restrooms or a place to enjoy our picnic, and after we learned about this cave home, we decided to not pay the $6.50 per person admission for the 10-minute tour. I think young children might enjoy this.

daniel lefevre

Great place! worth the stop and even better if you do the tour! After all it's a tourist trap but again worth it and worth dealing with the traffic and all that goes with places that are popular. Plan ahead and pack /bring a lunch .

Loriann Lorik

Cool, but not worth the tour fee.

Tamara Hatton

Great place to visit, we loved the zoo, but everyone else that worked there had poor attitudes.

Roving Nomad

Clever place... No one around to service customerss.

Barbara Clark

This is a unique place to stop with all the many outside exhibits. The rock house is really cool. My rating of 3 is because the 12 minute tour....although it gave information on the husband and wife who worked hard to make the house....was less than 8 minutes and very rushed. The girl who gave tour moved us along too quickly and wouldn't let us look around after rushing us. Ended tour by throwing pointer stick on counter and said..."if you liked tour I gave, there's a tip jar" Improved customer service/professionalism would have rated this a 5

Cindy Carpenter

Awesome place but bummer you couldn't take any pics inside the house. Im guessing it's so you would buy their book afterwards. Very unique experience though.

Frankie Gibson

Beautiful Visitor Center lots of neat stuff

Travis Elliott

5000 square feet of housing blasted out of a rock cliff. It's fun and take the tour.

Joshua Pearson

Great touristy place with fun and interesting stuff, junk art, and history to check out with the family. I don't like the huge white letters painted on the beautiful rock...but would recommend a stop here to check it out.

Cassidy Holdaway

Took the tour of the house love the preservation of how it was and our tour guide was awesome. Highly recommend.

NetuserLC NetuserLC

Neat place to visit. Very unique.

Lorrie CV

Fun place to stop and stretch your legs...lol lots of fun things to see

chad palardy

Kitschy as all hell. Our guide was so bland in his tone... but it was perfect for the humor that went along with the tour.

David Roberts

Neat home carved into sandstone.

ElectricDragon

Very interesting. Cool in the summer Warm in the winter.

Tela Todachinnie

Loved the gift shops. It's been forever since I've visit hole 'n' the Rock! Fun! Fun! Fun!

Leticia Hernandez

The best childhood menories come to mind.

Robert Ramsey

What a unique experience! We have taken the tour of the home built into the Rock & found what a fascinating way to live. It is fun to walk along the paths to see how creative some people can be. I know travelers will enjoy this gem in the desert. I hope you stop & discover the many wonders of the Hole N The Rock.

Carey Myers

Good old fashioned place that takes you back in time petting zoo really nice also.

Darron Fick

If you have 12 minutes do take the tour. "Memorable"!

Diane Salazar

Worth the stop! Have passed it for years and did not pass it again. Tour was great!!!

James Talbert

Cool place to stop and look at things

Curtis Boswell

Very touristy but fun, they have a little zoo and you can take a tour of the cave house for $10. Gift shop was cool too.

Obi Ron Kenobi

Very interesting curiosity stop with lots of little wonders.

Jet Smith

Cool place, but the owners seem to be stuck in the past... No dogs allowed anywhere, and they don't allow photos to be taken of anything. Which is a shame, because the house is pretty impressive.

D Sanchez

If you need a break from the monotony of driving, check this place out! You will easily spend 1hr here without even trying.

Jeff Davis

Kids loved feeding the animals. Kept thinking about the movie the cars.

Antonio Salce

The place doesn't allow dogs, which was a complete deal breaker for me. If you don't have a furry companion and just have kids or are human, it looks like a cool place to stop and check out.

Kerry Brock

Just what you expect for a tourist trap. But a good stop to stretch your legs, use a restroom and buy that Moab shotglass.

Ashlynn Martinez

The women in the gift shop was very rude.. I brought my sister in-law but since we weren't doing the tour she basically made us feel in comfortable even being there... I use to love this place growing up..

Karlee Aire

Very nice and relaxing pit stop

Cissy Hill

You have got to stop here. Check out what the family did to live in the rock. What a fantastic idea. Check out the grounds, the gift shops and their quaint little zoo. My son loves it and he's 10.

Jack 'n Karen Bowden

Nice shops with reasonable prices. Zoo and antiques to see. Fun stop.

Kai Turner

It really is a cute roadside attraction. I have driven by several times and decided to stop and take 30 minutes to walk around. I would say stop and take a break there if you need to stretch you legs other than that you can keep moving

Larraine Hill

Great place to there, but not pet zoo.
