Denied me access because I did not have a “card” for my service dog. It is against the ADA to ask for a card or papers as a requirement for entry. Claimed it was for “insurance“. If that’s the case, then their insurance policy is in violation of federal law. Wasn’t worth the argument or my patronage.
Living off of Kevin Costner's scraps. Cool sculptures, the rest is just souvenirs.
The tour lady was nice and made the information both educational and entertaining.
It tells the real story not written anywhere else!!
Not a bad stop, doesn't take long. The speaker was helpful and educational. The teepees are interesting and the art sculptures stunning. Wishing for more here! Iced tea delicious!!
Learned the importance of the buffalo to the native people.
Beautiful. White people should all see this.
If you are going, you should listen to the presentation and read the information on the plaques. The statues themselves are not worth the cost of the entrance fee even though they are beautiful. You aren't allowed to take in big purses or …
"Walking in the middle of a chosen land", that's how I feel being here. A place to learn, very nice people, beautiful sculpture. I hope tot return one day!
You really should stop in
We had been to Tatonka several years ago and this time brought our daughter with us. It was excellent... again! So worth seeing.
Glad I came worth the trip to take a journey through the story of the bison, nice staff.worth seeing.
Billy was a fantastic teacher at the Tatanka Story of Bison today. Extremely professional, open to answering any question no matter what it is to help us understand his culture even more. I'm from Australia so I didn't have much knowledge on America's indigionous communities before this, but the beautiful artifacts mixed with Billy's lecture helped me walk away with a great understanding. Would recommend to anyone to make a stop here.
Fantastic. Storyteller was great. Very very engaging
The details and information on all of it was fantastic!
Interesting place to visit, the story behind the planes Bison is rich in history
Authentic Lakota Indian presenter and artifacts. Lifelike bison hunting sculpture in middle of prairie. Accessible. Food, gifts, video avail.
very nice but not worth 10.00 or 8.50 for senior
Very informative on the Native American culture, a must visit if in the Deadwood area.
This was a lot more fun than I expected, very interesting & educational.
Don't come. It's great that a place makes women check their bags before you can go in but after you pay
Great place to see
Landscape trees are almost dead . Building in disrepair. When you walk from the parking lot to the entrance stairs, there is a sign "no dogs" "no purses". The sign doesn't offer the cost to get in. No purse=no money. Want to use the restroom? It's for paying customers only. Kevin...be ashamed!
Been here several times. Always a great place to visit. Very informative. A museum with a wealth of history and artifacts.
Not worth driving into...
Great shoes
the current manager is awful she accuses everyone of being a thief.
I just loved Tatanka Story of the Bison Museum, and not mention we also had a nice story and presentation from a lakota lady also a descendant of crazy horse it was awesome!! I definitely recommend it the $12 dollar charge was definitely worth it!!
Very friendly staff. Good concept, but not worth $10
Cool place!
Takes your breath away when you see the status.
Make sure to watch the movie than you will have the sence of this place
This was a cool place to visit. Definitely watch the video!
Such an informative experience to include a video from Kevin Costner, live presentation from a Lakota woman, and viewing of the bronze Tatanka. The fee of $12 is certainly reasonable. I recommend a must on the tourist circuit. Oh and gift shop has beautiful items.
Beautiful surroundings! Very educational.
Beautiful
I had no idea what this place was going to be and I walked away from there at changed human being. Of all the things we saw on our trip to South Dakota, Wyoming and Colorado this was the most moving and amazing part of our vacation. It is a must-see! Kevin Costner is a great man for doing this. Our Lakota lecturer was enthralling and very informative. Very gracious with his time and very eloquent. Gives me goosebumps even now just thinking about it.
Guide was very informative!
Emotional..amazing and very vital to know the history and truth !!!
An interesting stop just outside of Deadwood. Native American artifacts and history definitely worth the fee and you time.
Kevin Costner did a Great job with this.
Learned a lot here. I found it moving.
My family loved learning about bison history. Beautiful location
Interesting exhibit. Knowledgeable staff. Not worth $10
Not a very large museum, but worth your time if you want to learn about the relationship the native Americans had with the bison. Started by Kevin Costner after he filmed Dances with Wolves, it has an amazing group of sculptures outside as well.
Had a good time here. Learned a lot about buffalo and the local natives. Wasn’t overwhelmed with the experience but it was worth the stop. The view is lovely, and the nice people who work here were very knowledgeable. There are no …
Excellent stop very informative!! Wonderful gift shop!
Very nice. Great information.
We enjoyed our visit to the center, especially the interpretive presentation by "Billy". The artwork and displays are beautiful. The bronze sculptures of the bison and the Native American riders were breathtaking. When we think of South Dakota, we will always remember our rainy day adventure at Tatanka.
This was an experience I will never forget! I did have weird experience with 1 of the speaker's there HE wasn't friendly at all. But when you get outside and walk around it was nice. Love the bronze bison
(Translated by Google) Very inspiring place ..... a must see place in Deadwood. Discusses the story of the "almost and almost" eradication of the bison oxen in the late 1800s as well as the true history of the Indians. We heard an exciting …
Loved the information. Absolutely beautiful art in an idyllic setting.
I would not pay $12.00 for admission price. No senior discounts. Not much parking
We love history. So everything worth seeing
Amazing historical perspective of Black Hills Culture & History...L❤VE & WILL BE BACK AGAIN!!
Was given a talk by a young Lakota gentlemen who explained how some of Lakota families still practice the "old" ways. After hearing their story and that of the Buffalo it leaves you feeling rather sad at how badly they were treated.
Not worth it, so very disappointed. They need to put more effort into making it worth the cost.
The womenfolk really enjoyed this I stayed in the car with the dogs.
An absolutely incredible artwork would be enough, but the knowledge of the staff and their willingness to share it make this one of the best attractions in the area. Do not miss it!
Very interesting and nice.
While the space is small, it is packed with so much important history! I'm so glad we went here before Deadwood.
Beautiful setting and outstanding sculptures. The story of the bison is both sad and compelling. If you are visiting in the Deadwood area it is well worth a visit.
Very interesting and touching
You must go, not much to do there but speak to the lady giving the presentation as she was great to speak too you can learn lots about Native Americans.
Just stopped quickly
Very informitive beautiful views.
Mr. Kevin Costner, the actor, was instrumental in getting this display setup. Take the time to watch the video on the history of the work that Mr cosner did and on the work that the sculptor did in making that really nice monument that is to the rear of the building.
Kevin Costners place for his indian buffalo hunters
Awesome museum and history of the Bison. Phil was so informative and his passion was obvious.
Awe
(Translated by Google) The lady at the front desk was nice. That was all. Not to be recommended unless you are a fan. (Original) Die Dame am Empfang war nett. Das war aber auch alles. Nicht zu empfehlen ausser man ist ein Fan.
Very cool!
It's a decent place to spend an hour looking at the indoor museum exhibits followed by the outdoor bison sculptures. The location isn't exactly a museum but more of a memorial to the bison herds that once roamed the Plains. It was interesting and we'll maintained.
Experience of a lifetime.
This place is incredible! Beautiful monument very great view and hands on display! Bought a lovely Bison purse! Must visit to get the whole Native story near Deadwood SD.
Owned by Kevin Costner
Words aren't enough to describe my experience at Tatanka. So emotional. Such an amazing story being told and you almost feel like you are there when you are out at the statues. The music helps take you to that time and place. A must see when you are out that way. I learnt so much and feel so blessed to have visited. The staff are fantastic... Steve the manager, a fellow Australian is doing a fantastic job there, Phil & Billy, the native Americans there are so knowledgeable. I could have listened to them for hours. Luigi the cook... Wow! He is amazing. The food there is fantastic. Don't miss out on visiting the centre. Good luck everyone. Melbourne Australia
(Translated by Google) Slightly sloppy, everything is lying around. $ 12 entry is also a proud price. (Original) Etwas schlampig, überall liegt was herum. 12$ Eintritt ist auch ein stolzer Preis.
Such a peaceful atmosphere. The sculptures are spectacular.
If you're in the Deadwood area, this is a must see. The interpretative center and the larger than life bronze statues are just amazing. I highly recommend this.
Beautiful place
I have been coming to the hills for 14 years. I just found this place and it is my most loved place to now visit!
Wonderful visit, phil was so informative, explained so much , he was awesome. The art work was incredible.. thank u so much
Great lesson
(Translated by Google) Very interesting and the staff is friendly. The view of the Black Hills is overwhelming. (Original) Sehr interessant und das Personal ist freundlich. Die Aussicht auf die Black Hills ist überwältigend.
Amazing beautiful place. The life size sculpture of 3 Indians on horseback herding 12 Bison off of a cliff is breathtaking!
We were so excited to see this museum, but when we got there, the front desk woman was so rude, we walked out. It was all over me bringing in my purse and how we could miss a sign that "is clear to them" that purses aren't allowed. After a 3 minute lecture on how we could miss this sign, we walked out. We just wanted to come learn about the history of buffalos and not how stupid we are for missing a sign.
It has so much potential. However, the depicted bison metal art pieces are magnificent. Never saw something so magnificent
It was more about Costner than the bison but the statue of buffalo jump was interesting
Good presentation of the film awesome statues small walk around but very interesting we bought a whole bunch of items there haven't tried a food but look good will return
Authentic artifacts and background movie make this a rewarding visit. Very reasonable.
Overpriced
Must see if you are in Deadwood or just passing through. Kevin Costner did a great thing here. Be sure to watch the video before you see the sculptures. Awe inspiring...
Well done.
Fascinating. A must see on your trip
Excellent! Don't miss this one. Set up by Kevin Costner, this is an old west and Native-American history center. Our guide was very knowledgeable on both.
(Translated by Google) Interesting tour! - July 2016 Just outside the town of Deadwood, entry is rapid (although output indicated by a broad panel). Large parking, welcome upon our entrance where after payment we are invited to watch a …
Very educational and a lot of history about the Indians and the Bison. This is a must see.
Best experience I have had to learn about the history of the bison and Lakota culture. The story is riveting and must be retold to remind us of the crucial fate that once appeared before thebison
We spent about an hour there. The staff was very friendly and encouraged our 2 toddlers to be hands-on with the museum items. This made it much more fun for them. They enjoyed going in the tee-pees and running around on the lawn. The story of the bison is unbelievable. We easily got in and out with our 25' gooseneck trailer.
Thank you, Phil, for the guided tour you gave our family. Understanding the Lakota culture directly from a descendant, supplemented by the museum exhibit and video, was an experience that enlightened me.
Very informative center, a must stop
A tourist stop that is almost more of a memorial to the bison herds which used to roam the continent, Tatanka was originally intended to be a resort including a railroad spur. When the funding fell through, Kevin Costner had already ordered the bison sculptures and needed a place to put them; enter Tatanka. All of the admission fees go back into further development, Kevin Costner does not receive a penny. We opted to do a self-guided tour and skipped the video presentation. The small museum houses a number of artifacts and they are constantly adding to the collection. The displays discuss the many uses the Native Americans had for the bison, methods of hunting and processing, and the history of the near-extinction of the bison herds. Stepping outdoors leads you to a short walking loop where you see the one and a quarter scale bronze sculptures of 14 bison and 3 Native Americans on horseback. It is a poignant scene, frozen in time as the riders chase the bison over a cliff -- one of the easiest and safest ways they used to obtain enough bison for the tribe's needs. One thing of which to be aware, the admission fees posted on the website may or may not be accurate. When we arrived, we found the admission was $9 per adult instead of the posted $7.50. If this is a concern, call ahead to verify.
Very informative and well worth the trip!
Absolute wonderful! One of our best experiences in Deadwood! Thank you Kevin for this beautiful experience!
beautiful bronzes
I loved the story behind it. Fascinated with the sculptures. I felt in awe.
This was a very nice place to visit . I absolutely loved the information they had and I loved the sculptures they were very beautiful. I would come here with older kids and adults.
It was hot outside but I really did like it it was cool you should go and see it it's amazing.
Very moving place. Such a tragic story.
Meh, save you cash.
It was absolutely amazing. The guide was very knowledgeable and he stayed after to talk with my husband and me and another couple. He answered all of our questions and told us even more about his culture. He made the tour amazing!! We also LOVED the sculptures.
The most interesting part of this was the sculptures outside but still not worth the admission fee. Theres better museums in the area goto the Journey in Rapid or the Vore Buffalo Jump west of spearfish if you want an educational experience and not just a tourist trap..
Was disappointed, very expensive for the 20 minute walk through..
Great place to learn about the Dakota Indians and the Bison.
Very informative!
