We were amazed to find this building open on a Sunday morning! We pretty much had the place to ourselves! Only disappointment is we couldn't shop in the little gift shop and there was no one to answer our questions. However, we did a self-guided tour and explored many areas of this very unique building. I loved searching for all the little blue tiles!! Also enjoyed the walk around Capitol Lake and the drive past the Governor's mansion.

The SD State Capitol is a beautifully restored state capitol building. Downstairs there is a small gift store with many local items. The building is open to the public most days, and you can use self-guided tours or tours provided by capitol staff to explore the unique and beautiful architecture of the building while learning about the state government that functions within it.

Beautiful building in a great setting. The city is beyond charming and the people are very friendly. Overall, it is far from the interstate, but I would highly recommend traveling to Pierre and seeing South Dakota's State Capital!

Nice building to visit. We didn't get to spend a lot of time as we were on our way to Rapid City. We did get the boys capitol books stamped but almost had to run to another location (luckily found someone willing to go behind the desk and get the stamp.

Great place. Pierre is such a quiet and simple city. When we visited here the Capitol dome was under repair work. But the experience of being there was superb enough to make us happy. We walked in the nearby areas and took some pictures. The nearby areas are also quiet and not too much traffic and activity there. We liked the atmosphere and our visit to this great location. There’s a church nearby and right in front of the capitol there is a Soldiers and Sailors World War Memorial Building.

We detoured off of I-90 to visit this State Capitol, almost on a whim, and we are very happy that we did. This is the most beautiful State Capitol building that we've every visited. The people working here were also wonderful. If you have the time, don't miss this jewel.

This is an amazingly beautiful example is an old capital building. I was fascinated by the casual, relaxed atmosphere and the accessibility of the political representatives. There are wonderful murals in various areas, and a quaint gift shop in the lower level that's worth a visit. Well done South Dakota!

Nice place. Unfortunately our fellow citizens voted in Kristi Noem as the governor. Kind of demeans the place. Guess I expected better. At least Pierre is nice. Thats why I gave it 4 stars.

Its been an amazing week spent here in Pierre SD, the town and the Capital they are so beautiful... love it here...very educational town statues almost every corner, lots of history, The Missouri River and the Louis and Clark trail, which we walked every night , even got caught in a down pour..lol loved it....

Why do they write SOVTH DAKOTA on the state capitol building? I think they don't know how to spell SOUTH at the time they built the building. Anybody know why?
