A great spot for a short day hike pretty much any time of year. (Although I'd stay on the beach on a really hot day.) Several trails you can easily cover in two hours. During the cooler months you are likely to see some impressive large birds. We saw two snowy owls up close in February. Great views of Rhode Island Sound, the Sakonnet River, and the Middletown beaches. A fun and informative nature center. Great for a one

The trails are maintained well. The parking lot is paved. There are bathrooms available in the nature center at the main entrance or the side front entrance. The nature center is very nice and the staff is friendly. The trails are muddy after rain or snow melt. Access to the shore, from the trail is clearly marked. The trails are also very well marked. The main trail is very level and nice and wide.

Recommend combining hike with visit to Fieldstones for lunch and Newport Vineyards for a late afternoon glass of wine. Snowy owls show up in January, according to help at visitors center.

Brenda P

This is a great place for walking/ hiking with your family. It has flat, easy trails with benches along the way but you can also veer off and go explore the rocks as well. We saw plenty of flowers and wildlife so it can be a teaching opportunity too. The views are awe inspiring!! Kids will love it and parents will enjoy it.

Elizabeth Seveney

A perfect walk through nature along a path overlooking the ocean ! There was a double rainbow today !!!!!

Rock Jocelyn

Exceptional water views with a Natural reserve. Parking for there only as Zero beach parking tolerated. Several paths which a couple lead to amazing rocks, water side. Do not veer off the path unless wearing skin protection. Deer ticks among others are out this July and August. Cover up and be free!

Marc Bond

I love to go here and take pictures. I was able to take a pictures of a lot of animals including the snowy owl. The hike is pretty good too.

Everett Harman

Right next to second beach in Middletown RI, this refuge is a treasure. There is a total of about three miles of trail along the edge of a peninsula with beautiful views of the ocean crashing against the rocky shoreline. The interior of the peninsula is home to much wildlife, and it's not unusual to spot deer. A variety of birds can always be seen. There is a nice visitor center providing lots of information. You can borrow binoculars there. It's better to bring your own because some are a little out of kilter.

Daniel W

Nice walk good fishibg, just wish I could bring my dog.

I discovered this place by driving along the beach at Newport. The trails are great and there is a volunteer at the visitors center named Norm who has lots of stories as well as historical and geographical perspectives

Jamie C

Sachuest is one of the best places on the island. Snowy owls, deer, migrating birds, and lots of other wildlife call Sachuest home. The trails are well groomed and can handle a durable carriage for the babies. Enjoy, and be sure to bring a camera! Cheers

rose d

Beautiful area right on the coast. Beaches range from sandy bathing areas to pebble to jagged rough boulders. Many scenic overlooks. Had a whitetail deer come up within 6 feet of us and then stay there!

Joe Roderick

Beautiful day here

Alonzo Mosely

Beautiful Vista of the shore with a well kept hiking path around the refuge. The place has a interesting visitor center with spotless restroom facilities. Easy parking and a nice getaway from busy waterfront Newport.

Danny Arocho

Great and peaceful place, I am in love! If you want great pictures THIS IS THE PLACE!

terrence gavan

Sachuest Point Wildlife Refuge is located on the edge of the Atlantic on the southeastern point of Aquidneck Island. The the trails circumvent the refuge. You find natural beauty in the wooded habitat on one side and the surf pounding the rocks on the other side. the distance of the outside loop trail is a little less than 2.5 miles. You'll see deer, rabbits, all sorts of birds and even the Snowy Owl if you're lucky.

Louie Lou

Nice quite reserve with plenty of birds and deer and recently a snowy owl!

Nick Evans

Short hikes, but amazing views. Went in January and saw deer and a couple different Hawks. Would definitely go again.

Beautiful area to take in forest nature and the ocean at the same time. I've seen deer, birds, and the owl that perches on the roof of the center. Visitor Center closes at 4 PM. No toilet in that area, but there are other spots nearby by a short drive outfitted with portapotties.

Leo Mansi

Great views and this winter a snowy owl. Limited parking.

billdelri

Sangeetha Sivakumar

Loved the sunset here

Nicolas Williams

So glad they didn't build an oil refinery here!

Sarah Lynch

Great place to bring kids, even in the winter (though I would highly recommend cold weather gear because the wind can be bitter cold). Trails are well maintained and scenery is breathtaking. There are also beautiful and informative hands-on displays inside the visitor center, including exhibits of the local flora and fauna and even some history of the area. There are a couple telescopes for looking out over the breakers as well. My kids (ages 7, 5, 3, and 1) really enjoyed our visit

Donna Andreozzi

Such a great visit. I was in Newport for 3 days and came here twice to do the trails. Saw so many birds and beautiful plants. Really worth the visit and exploring the grounds! Parking is free and not too hard to find.

Steph Karl

I visit every year trying to spot wildlife and half the time I see some :) staff are very helpful and pleasant! Love it here

john milauskas

Beautiful snowy owl today on top of the visitor center

Joshua Pereira

A little smelly as far as beach's go. But bunny's and birds galore. Trails were clean and satisfying to walk if you are scared of spiders do NOT go down to the rocks.

Heather Zukowski

This was my first time here even though I've lived in RI my entire life. The path was wide and easy to walk, but with places to trek "off the beaten path." The scenery was gorgeous. My kids, ages 4 and 12, both enjoyed our adventure. There are nice bathrooms, water fountains, and info about the native species at the complex.

Matt McIntyre

This is probably the best nature preserve trail that we've hiked on while we've lived in Newport. I love the coastal views, and accessibility to the small beach areas, and cliffs. There are plenty of opportunities to take amazing photos, and observe plenty of the natural habitat and animals. The trails are also very well maintained, and at least 3-4 ft wide along all of the routes, which is wider than many. Parking is also free, but it is not intended for people going to the beach down the street.

Nicole Kirkos

Beautifully kept in the name of wildlife.

Luke Peterson

Great place with a great view but finding 8 ticks on yourself makes you rethink of not going back

Jesse Farias

A really nice walk, well worth thevisit

Shaun Cooper

Great hiking and water views.

Heidi M

It's a nice place for a short run, walk and to tske pictures.

Jay

Great place to go for a walk with beautiful views of the ocean

Daniel Sheehan

This is one of the most underrated locations on Aquidneck Island. Forget the wealthy and material junk the tourist seem to come here for. Forget beaches 1,2, and 3. This place is closer to what God has in mind when he created Rhode Island. Good hiking and not overly crowded.

Todd Burns

Great spot for a walk and quiet time sitting on the rocks on the ocean.

Kurt Olsen

Great shoreline trail for an easy walk or run.

Nick Sanginario

Great place for a walk

Bob Zomermaand

We took a long walk on a loop trail. The birds were singing and the sun was warm. Ahhh. That was good.

Mermaid Masterpieces

I absolutely love going here to take photos, unfortunately staff doesn't enforce rules... for example people that dont know better that approach the snowy owl, or people going there with dogs. It's a very special place that should be monitored outside, not just people in the building. This photo was taken by me, from there.

Deborah Hanson

Great place for walking trails, scenic views and wildlife

Chris Benigno

Quiet, tranquil trails for easy walking and bird watching.

Logan Hansen

I've never been able to get this close to these animals. They always hide. But there is a healthy respect for human and animal shared by, from what I saw, everyone who comes here. Definitely a must visit if you're coming to Newport. Can't wait for warmer whether!

James Frechette

First time here foe a little winter trek. Hoping to see some wildlife and get lucky. Trails are manicured and marked well. Few miles of different tracks. Multiple overlooks of the coastline with specified zones to go down to the water. Deer were everywhere some walked right in front of me. Bird and raptor signage said this spot has some rare visitors to watch out for. I drive a car poor in the snow and sometimes going to these areas are dicey. Roads were nice and paved all the way to the parking lot. There is a wildlife center there opened seasonally that looked nice.

Andrew Brain

Great trail, with lots of scenic views!! We even saw a white tailed deer!

Lynne Ensign

Saw a Snowy Owl there. The walks are very scenic and fairly easy.

Mister Guy

We took a great, relatively easy trail right along the ocean, and we saw lots of wildlife & great views of ocean waves. It seems like a very unique, protected place to visit.

ava bliss

I love being here❤️❤️❤️ No place on Earth like this!

D Bailey

Gorgeous views!!! Great for picture taking!!

S Sealark

Best marked, preserved reserve. Great views and visitor center. Want to borrow a birding backpack next time!

Noah Collin

Poison ivy! Beautiful park, but be careful if you leave the trail. There's lots of poison ivy here. Poison ivy has three leaves, and is often oily and may have a red tint to it. Be careful.

Jacob Galipeau

Great walking on the coast.

Dale Robertson

Nice walk. Beautiful scenery

D C

Beautiful, huge snowy out. Huge!

jay digz

Bring the family. Never know what nature will show you.

Greg Manns

I absolutely love it here. I pretty much had found it by accident while just cruising around Newport and it's to the point where I no longer make travel plans to Newport, I make travel plans to Sachuest Point. Sometimes you'll find an abundance of rabbits hopping about the trails, which are adorable. You can come across a variety of wildlife, hawks, eagles, owls, foxes. A lot of creatures make this their homes, some just for a season and others for longer, so you never know what you'll find. I remember the last time I visited, bird watchers were there in hordes to see an owl that had nested there. It's wonderful to walk around the place, often surrounded by overgrown hedges and whatnot, which are often trimmed outside of the summer season. It's a lovely way to unwind and if you're there during the tourist season and need to get away from the traffic and crowded beaches and shopping centers, definitely make this refuge your temporary refuge.

Jakob Randel

Short, easy hike with a gorgeous view and some good birdwatching.

Meththini Gibson

Beautiful. There are 2 or 3 main paths you can hike. One is along the coast and it's gorgeous. We did that one. Abt 1.5 miles. Or you can merge with the other loop and total will be about 3 miles. The other loop is more inland.

Michael Toppa

Got to see a snow owel it was beautiful!

Phil Buzby

Great day to see the snowy owl

Dave Keatley

Great fishing and Visibility

Catherine Wheeler

Sachuest is a beautiful and relaxing place to walk, run or bike! The sounds of nature, the waves, and the views and photographic opportunities are amazing!! Love this place!!!

Tara Villanova

I highly recommend this wildlife refuge for a beautiful walk by the ocean, and lots of different birds to see, bring your camera or binoculars. It is a nice walk, but no shade on the walk, so be prepared for full sun on a hot day.

Heather Wright

This place is my favorite in Middletown RI. Free parking for only that park, many different trails short too long with signs spectacular view of the ocean & shorelines, Birds, Deers, bunnies, dragonflies. No pets allowed so I can never bring my dog. There no shade so you are pretty much out in the open. Accessible for strollers & wheelchairs, no bikes allowed. Benches and historical signs and tower to check out your surroundings. Theirs one building have restrooms, Museum, gift shop. Trails are easy & well maintained. Certain days there's a nice breeze that helps other times it can get quite hot so bring bottle of water, hats, sunglasses.

Sheldon Snodgrass

One of the best views in RI. And it's free

Jeff Carr

This is a great place to take a hike. The trails are gravel paths. Located at the end of "second beach" the reserve reaches out into the ocean for some amazing views. If you are a bird watcher this place is a must. I very informative information center is worth a visit inside. Restrooms are available. The parking is free but no beach parking is allowed.

Tripp Alyn

A great learning tool for kids of all ages...I learned a lot by reading their display materials and can now identify more native species and how they fit into this habitat...!

Jen E.

Beautiful hiking along the Shoreline. Also many benches along the way to sit and enjoy the view.

Monique Flint

Beautiful nature walk along the ocean! Only about 1.5 miles long.
