The house and grounds are breathtakingly spectacular. And remind me of the gap between "them" and the rest of us. It also reminds me that women of that class could/did make a huge difference for those of us who followed. The Guilded Age UberRich women understood more than they're given credit for knowing.
It's stunning! Peek into the lives of the Vanderbilts during the Guilded Age. If you are interested in women's history and the women's suffrage movement you will love learning about Alva Vanderbilt!
Wore Gloria Vanderbilt jean capris to see her childhood home... Spectacular
I enjoyed the audio tour and the house was cool. The marble was pretty awesome and the rooms were ornate. But the Chinese tea house was a little underwhelming
No line to get in. Very well preserved. Interesting audio tour
good place to visit but pricy
The self-guided tour is available in a few languages, we chose American English, and is really well done. In addition to the overview of the mansion and each room, there are (optional) background stories to listen to. Staff/guides are accessible for questions/audio directions/information. The Chinese Tea Room, behind the mansion, is worth the short walk. Not only for the architecture, but for the view. The gift shop had a nice selection and moderate to expensive price range. We enjoyed the Marble House tour.
The definition of "Conspicuous Consumption", but a wonderful step back in time
It is such a elaborate and big beautiful house. It has been well taken care of over the years. The house has so much marble and husband designed to such great detail. It is one of the other mansions to visit in newport. I would plan to spend at least an hour or 2 here if you want to take the audio tour and enjoy everything.
Nicely preserved and a great lunch at the Japanese tea house. I miss the live tours though.
Great audio tour. Nice staff.
The mansion tours are great and a lot of fun.
Was a beautiful place to visit .
I loved the house it was beautiful but the "art" randomly placed through out the house was just weird. One of the rooms was a beautiful gothic room and then it was just a giant foot in the middle of the room it really took away from the house and the beauty of it
Absolutely beautiful place, as everybody says - the best mansion to see in Newport. Stained glass windows are incredibly beautiful! Chinese tearoom behind the palace is stunning. Wonderful views from the back of the mansion. I'd say it's a bit overpriced, but if you buy a 5-mansion pass, it's a good deal.
I visited Marble House on a free day for Newport County residents which saved me a few dollars however I would have been happy even if I had paid for my admission. One of the "smaller" of the Newport mansions it is no less beautiful or awe inspiring. The gothic room is incredible and in my mind truly stands out among the numerous elaborately designed spaces. Also of note, this mansion has a more personal feel than some of the others and you get a real sense of the people behind the architecture and interior design. I'll definitely revisit here in the future!
Gorgeous mansion with breathtaking artworks inside and out.
Nice place but the older lady at the front was rude, and distracted from the overall experience. The older bald gentleman upstairs was rude as well. A lot different from the other houses on the tour.
I think this was my favorite mansion. I love marble. I put a bid on it to buy, but considering the taxes alone are more than my salary I don't think it will be considered.
A taste of what an overabundance of money will achieve. ..awe-inspiring in one way..but really highlights the disparity of life...I appreciated the kitchen area for its warmth and simplicity. .imagined the massive work there...wished there was more insight into the servant's quarters. .tour is well-prepared and informative. This 'cottage' is just a taste of the wealth of the Newport
Growing up in Newport I took the mansions for granted. It has only been as an adult that I began to tour them in earnest whether showing them off to a friend, or just going on my own. I joined the Preservation Society so whenever I am home, I can pop into the mansion of my choice and just wander. I really enjoy the audio tours and the added information you can get at "the touch of a button." Marble House is just lovely.
This was truly a Marble house, one of the most decadent homes of the Newport Mansions, I recommend everyone to come out and see these homes and learn about the guided era. This was not only very educational but a pleasure to the eye, great day trip!
Awesome place to visit in Rhode Island
Such a spectacular location. The attention to detail is superb! Enjoyed a beautiful dinner under a beautiful tent in the back. And the Pagoda is such a special treat. Thank you for allowing this beautiful house to be open to the public. I especially loved the spiral staircase. The guides were very well informed on the property and were able to answer any questions. Thank you for a wonderful experience
The marble house is a good mansion to visit, takes one back in time. There is lots of old times art work here as well as they try to feature some pieces by newer modern artists, which does not necessarily go with old times art and decor (for ppl like me it is hinderence really). China tea hose is great, now its turned into a cafe (which felt a bit weird to me). View from the china tea house is really beautiful.
It's called the marble house for a reason! Loved visiting it, and would definetly recommend it to anyone who's debTing between different mansions to tour. We've been to most of the mansions, and this is for sure a good one.
Come here to learn about crazy, rich, "summer cottage" living. The audio tour was more enjoyable than expected. Don't come here if you want to stop on and take pictures from the staircase. That's not allowed.
Worth a visit due to its architectural views inside. Takes you a world of royalmess with exquist living . True to its name, marble is in full display in the form of floor and walls inside the building.
Loved going there. Such a nice place to visit all the rooms and history is amazing. Cant wait to visit this place again.
Very interesting place, would like to come back and see it again
Fascinating journey through the life of one of the first women Suffragettes and the coming of age of her daughter. Life was hard for women once, but this home also stands as a testament to their power and personal agency. Alva Vanderbilt was a trend setter to say the very least and it is reflected in the various Marble finishes throughout her glittering home.
Very wheelchair accessible . Went in my power chair no problem.
A very interesting historical house. Beau6decor and Gardens. A must see.
Wonderful and refined place. Must see. At one point the most expensive house in the United States.
This is an experience! I loved it!
Beautiful structure, great history of the guilded age and how people of means lived at the turn of the century. Smaller mansion.
Luxurious and royal..I loved the way it's organised for visitors. The audio tour was very informative.
A great day out!
Great preservation of a beautiful piece of history
Just incredible...the audio tour is well done and the grounds are well kept.
A true representation of summer home opulence in history. Gorgeous views.
The audio tour is great. Didn't like the modern art exhibit placed in the rooms. I guess that is temporary. They are out of place...
Definately worth the trip to visit such marvelous places. The tour is individualized with ipod system and different virsions such as adult or kid and languages such as english french and spanish. The mansions were beautiful
So beautiful. Lots of money to build such an elaborate place.
Magnificent place. You've to be here. Purpose to make the visit.
The house is really nice, the only downside is that they close too early. A little bit more time open may do the experience better for people driving from other states.
View is awesome but only able to drive by.
Would give 5 stars normally but the temporary modern art exhibit that weaved through the house felt to me a great detraction from the beauty of the house itself, but you should be your own judge. Otherwise, really like the tour, carefully curated explanation and tour was fantastic!
Visiting a Mansion from the 1800s and getting to experience the way of life from forgotten years was truly like traveling back in time. A historical throwback.
What a beautiful mansion. It's not the longest tour but it's definitely worth your time. My only regret is going on a day when it rained and missing some of the beautiful view and having to enjoy the grounds in the rain. Unfortunately you can only access a bathroom before or after the tour, but this beautiful house has a sassy story and is worth your time!
Found Marble House while looking for something to see while in Rhode Island. Gorgeous mansion full of story and history. Regular self-guided tour was well done and admission is reasonably priced. Be sure to take your time and try to go on a cool day. House was built in the late 1800's so there's zero air-conditioning.
Love this mansion. One of the best out of all the mansions in newport. Definitely need to go if you are in Newport visiting mansions. You won't regret it. Amazing and huge rooms, the history of this mansion is amazing. They are self guided tours so when you go there they will give you a headset and ipod and as you walk through the mansion on your own at your own pace you get to listen to the story and history of this great mansion. The art work is unbelievable and if you get a family pass its good for everyone in your home and you can go to all the mansions unlimited times for an entire year and the membership cost less than if you pay to have 4 people go to one mansion one time. The membership also is hood for discounted merchandise, discounted tours and even some free tours are included has well.
The tour of the property is very good but do not eat at the café as the sandwiches are awful.
Amazing display of craftsmanship and a glimpse into another world. Guided audio tour was very informative and easy to operate.
Magnificent mansion!! Gorgeous ocean view, beautiful Chinese Tea Room on the grounds, where you can get coffee, tea and something light to eat.
It seems in Newport Rhode Island in the 1800's there were some very rich people. These homes are magnificent works of art. It's hard to believe people lived in such massive homes made of gold and marble
We stopped by the breakers and marble house on a family road trip with the kids, ages 16, 14 & 10. Everyone of is loved it. They give you a cell phone type of device with head phones to listen to a pre-recorded audio tour. Your can stop, pause or replay any section at any time. It was fascinating to see and hear about the lives of the families who lived there. After we toured both houses we did the Cliff Walk, which was also very cool.
One of my all time favorites. Have been here three times over the years and it never disappoints.
Aside from The Breakers, Marble House was my favorite of the mansions we toured. Spectacular display of wealth, fine tastes, and excess. From marble to gold, the materials used in this home are so impressive. It’s hard to remember that these mansions were summer homes! Beautiful a small remarkable. A must-see. The audio tour included with admission is so well-done.
Amazing views. Scenic location.
The Marble House is another wonderful Mansion to tour and I loved it almost as the breakers but I really would have liked to have an actual tour instead of the audio tour because I had so many questions!
Being a fan of Downton Abbey, I felt like I was thrown back in time walking through this mansion. You get an audio guide which let's you explore the place on your own. The audio guide can give you a quick 40 minute tour or if you want to get into more details, it has little snippets of information regarding each room as well. It takes you through the story of the Vanderbilt Family and their contributions. They have played a major part in women's rights to vote, world of sailing and multiple other fields. The house is build on the inside mostly in marble and it looks absolutely majestic. There is also a Chinese tea room just outside the house where you can get refreshments.
The tour is self guided through a headset. Marble House is amazing. It is truly a one of a kind house. I enjoyed the tour and seeing this amazing home up close. I feel it was worth the money to see.
This is my favorite home in Newport. Exquisite is every way. The $80 membership for 2 people is the best deal and you get to see all of the homes or $55 for individual membership.
Amazing history behind one of the richest families in America
We had a blast! Great exercise and experience. Beautiful sites and breathtaking views.
Covered with marbles, this mansion has was worth visiting, particularly enjoyed the audio program.
Marble House is a Gilded Age mansion in Newport, Rhode Island. Designed as a summer cottage for Alva and William Kissam Vanderbilt by the society architect Richard Morris Hunt, it was unparalleled in opulence for an American house when it was completed in 1892. Its temple-front portico, which also serves as a porte-cochère, resembles that of the White House. Located at 596 Bellevue Avenue, it is now open to the public as a museum run by the Preservation Society of Newport County.
Just beautiful.. the staff were very nice .
Very interesting. Free parking across the street. Headphones and tour devices are provided, which is very nice. There is a lot of extra information you can listen to on the devices. Photography is permitted as long as you don't use a flash. Unbelievable opulence.
Amazing architecture with awesome views. There is great history to the house with an amazing story to tell. It also has a tea house in the design of a Chinese temple out in tbe gardens overlooking the Newport Harbor. If you are doing the mansion tours this should be your first stop. Its a must see.
Original furnishings. Beautiful marble. Audio tour a must.
Passed this on the cliff walk ..it was beautiful you can do a tour but we didn't have time
An amazing house and grounds. Well worth a visit.
It was beautiful, but pouring down rain for pictures of the water.
Good audio tour. Beautiful place.
All of the mansions on the tour are great, wonderfully preserved examples of a great era in American history.
Wonderful example of the Golden Era...I wish there had been a family tree somewhere to understand how the line of Vanderbilts progressed during time...lots of names to remember
It was poorly lit, which gave a gloomy cast to everything. The madam had poor taste. Her selfish desires in decoration were downright ugly, only in the great hall, are you able to appreciate the beauty of the marble.
Extremely unique compound...beautiful
It was good. Over price. $18 for an adult. It’s not worthy for such a huge price.
Fantastic furniture and outstanding architecture.
It is absolutely gorgeous .The decorations of the place is Luis IV style, very oppulent and gold gilded. Great place for a party.!
A lovely place to visit while being in Newport. You get to see the extravagant life rich people live during those days. Its small nice for a quick visit. Shouldn’t take you more than a couple of hours or even less.
It was spectacular! Really had a good time visiting. I highly recommend visiting the place when you happen to be in Newpor,RI.
Was there 10 years ago and forgot how beautiful it is. It's a Must See.
I really liked my visit in the Marble House. The architecture was beautiful. Once you have your ticket, you can get an audio guide for no additional fee. The audio guide itself was very helpful, being available in a couple of languages aside from English, including French. Overall, I recommend visiting this place if you like gorgeous houses and architecture. My only qualm with this one is that during my visit, there was modern art alongside the original setup of the mansion, made by a contemporary artist. With its flashy colors and rather...bizarre artistic expressions, it really clashed with the rest of the house. Other than that, the visit was quite enjoyable.
The mansions are beautiful and the history of each one is great to listen to as you walk through the mansions HOWEVER, I was extremely disappointed (and disgusted) that the headphones were not wiped down once handed back to staff. The sanitizer was sitting right there when returning your headsets but not once did I see any of the staff wipe one down...in any of the mansions. With everything going around nowadays, it is SO important to try to be as sanitary as possible, especially with that many people coming through in just one day. I understand that wiping each one down would be time consuming but there are inexpensive, *disposable* foam covers that can go over the ear piece. Shoot, I would even buy a pair if you sold them in the front before walking in. Just my .2 cents.
Beautiful mansion made of marble. Seaside view is the best. If you are a magnet collector like me..this is the place.
Great time always. Fascinating on how the rich and famous lived back then.
Interesting but less than jaw dropping!
Nice but I like the Breakers better
Beautiful! The audio tour is excellent. Gardens are lovely. A great value, less expensive ticket than The Breakers.
One of the top 4 from the gilded age. Great that it's a self guided tour so you move at you own pace and interest level
Admission was $18 a person and the building was small enough that we decided not to go inside. The outside was quite nice though.
nature all around inn all its beauty
The Marble House is a must visit in Newport. The house is very well conserved, with a careful decoration and furniture to reproduce it's original atmosphere. Also, the audio guides included with the tickets provide and excellent description of the period when the house was built and it's original owners.
Love hearing about Alva Vanderbilt. A little gilded age drama.
Tea house had great views and the house was just stunning. May want to rethink the shoulder to shoulder urinal situation...
Great experience and just wow, you have to visit this if you are coming to Newport. We did the two house tour which is breaker and Marble house totally worthy he 32 dollars.
Excellent example of a gilded age home and the lavish ends to which the rich would go to show their wealth and power.
Nicely maintained. This place has great views. Quite a big property.
Wow! I was blown away by this gorgeous mansion. We visited when they were decorated for Christmas and I highly recommend going during this time! Stunning
The Marble House is a must see if you are limited to a number of mansions to see on Bellevue Ave in Newport. The audio guide is great. If you are visiting with a child no strollers are allowed so you might have to carry your little one for about 45 minutes. The more mansions you are planning on visiting the cheaper each entry is, I recommend buying the 5 property ticket which has the best value if you have time to visit at least 4.
One of our favorite summer "cottages" in Newport to visit. The marble is exquisite. Grand and simple at the same time. Several different styles of decor in the same house.
I believe this house was made of marble, proper expectation set.
If you haven't visited the mansions of Bellevue Avenue, you are missing out. This jewel of Rhode Island is a window into the lives and lifestyles of some of the richest people in the world. For some, the architecture and art is what it's all about. To me, it's a bit of everything PLUS the understanding of how the USA came to be the country it is, with its best and worst attributes. The palatial homes of Bellevue are well worth the visit.
It's so much art work and the detail in craftsmanship it's mostly seen in Europe. I didn't know we had such jewels of beautiful work in USA. I know what you all maybe thinking, I should get out more.
Preserved very well. The history behind it is very interesting as well.
I love history and really enjoyed the other historical society houses however I didn't enjoy this one as much. With the odd decision to include modern art side by side with historic furniture and decor it seemed to shatter the historic immersion. Still fun to see but not as good as the others.
Amazing home, you really need to see it in person
Strange modern art display throughout the mansion kind of ruined the experience here. Separate room for this type of art display would be more appropriate.
Very similar to The Breakers in format, what you get to see, and what is preserved. That said, it's unique, and especially interesting if you've been to The Breakers already so you can see where one of the children went. Each room has it's own style here in a way that even The Breakers doesn't match.
This mansion was filled with marble. This one is a must see. The tea house in the back yard was great. You will not be disappointed.
Another in one of many great properties to visit in Newport. As the name suggests this house heavily features marble stone work. As with most of the mansion properties you can tour this one offers a free audio tour to guide you through the house. Be sure to check out the tea house out back by the water after your tour. It has sweeping views of the ocean and neighboring properties. It also has some light snacks and beverages.
Beautiful house with interesting history.
Marble house is one of the beat mansion. I loved this one better than Rosecliff and Breakers... Very nice view in the back sides... Nice interior. Must visit mension.
The audio tour was tough to follow. I had a much better time viewing the rooms on my own path. Loved the pagoda and the front fountain/entrance.
Really nice place to see. Lot of amazing house
The modern art placed throughout was very well done and added a sense of whimsy. Beautiful home you could see yourself living there.
Beautiful, historic home available to tour. Outside Japanese structure is also a place to eat a salad and have an iced tea before venturing to the next home. The property has stunning views of the Atlantic coast and the Cliff Walk. The Gift Shop has alot of items on the suffrage movement and historical women.
What a fantastic place to see. I would recommend getting a multi mansion ticket and checking out more of the Newport Mansions. Each of the Newport Mansions is unique in its own way and quite historical .
Amazing to see how the other half lived
This is an incredible monument to conspicuous consumption. They lived here only a few weeks a year and had several other houses. Definitely fun to see. The docents and wonderful. On the recorded tour, don't skip all the little side tours.
A beautiful built ornamental house.
Fantastically fantiscal! One can only dream of living in a place like this! Not very handicap accessible.
A well restored house witch represents a small peace of United States history, and represents a big part of the Vanderbilts life, power and wealth. Wort the Tour, prices are a but to high for my own preference with costs of 18$ per person.
Very interesting to see how the rich lived back then. It was a huge house and a alot of walking. I like how you had the audio tour and you could pick and choose what you wanted to learn about in each room and had the option to go more in depth if you wanted.
The mansion was built as a summer "cottage" between 1888 and 1892 for Alva and William Kissam Vanderbilt. It was a social landmark that helped spark the transformation of Newport from a relatively relaxed summer colony of wooden houses to the now-legendary resort of opulent stone palaces. The fifty-room mansion required a staff of 36 servants, including butlers, maids, coachmen, and footmen. The mansion cost $11 million (equivalent to $307 million in 2018; $660 million in Gold-dollar equivalence (1890 $20 Double Eagle)) of which $7 million was spent on 500,000 cubic feet (14,000 m³) of marble. Vanderbilt's older brother Cornelius Vanderbilt II subsequently built the largest of the Newport cottages, The Breakers, between 1893 and 1895. When Alva Vanderbilt divorced William in 1895, she already owned Marble House outright, having received it as her 39th birthday present. Upon her remarriage in 1896 to Oliver Hazard Perry Belmont, she relocated down the street to Belmont's mansion, Belcourt. After his death, she reopened Marble House and added the Chinese Tea House on the seaside cliff, where she hosted rallies for women's suffrage. Alva Belmont closed the mansion permanently in 1919, when she relocated to France to be closer to her daughter, Consuelo Balsan. There she divided her time between a Paris townhouse, a villa on the Riviera, and the Château d'Augerville, which she restored. She sold the house to Frederick H. Prince in 1932, less than a year before her death. For more than 30 years, the Prince family carefully occupied the house during Newport's summer season, taking special efforts to leave the vast majority of the interior intact as the Vanderbilts had originally intended. One notable event that occurred in the Marble House during the Prince family's residency was the famed Tiffany Ball in July 1957, sponsored by Tiffany & Company and held to benefit the relatively new Preservation Society of Newport County. Continuing late into the early morning hours, the ball welcomed guests with long national and international pedigrees, such as then Senator John F. Kennedy and his wife, Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy; Mr. and Mrs. E. Sheldon Whitehouse; the Astors; Count Anthony and Countess Sylvia Szapary of the Vanderbilt family; and hundreds of other luminaries. During their summer occupancies, to help preserve the integrity of Marble House's famed interiors, the Princes primarily resided in smaller quarters in the building's third floor, which had formerly been used for servant housing during the Vanderbilts' time. In 1963, the Preservation Society of Newport County purchased the house from the Prince Trust, with funding provided by Harold Stirling Vanderbilt, the Vanderbilt couple's youngest son. Through the Prince Trust, the Prince family donated virtually all original furniture for the house directly to the Preservation Society. The mansion was added to the National Register of Historic Places on September 10, 1971. The Department of the Interior designated it as a National Historic Landmark on February 17, 2006. The Bellevue Avenue Historic District, which includes Marble House and many other historic Newport mansions, was added to the Register on December 8, 1972 and subsequently designated as a National Historic Landmark District on May 11, 1976. The mansion still stands in great visible condition and is used for many things such as guided and non-guided tours, as well as hosting various special events, parties, and weddings.
What can I say? I really liked this place! Have been there twice and I am always amazed to make new discoveries at every turn!
Its a brilliant place , it one of the must see , when you visit Newport
One of the best Mansions. I liked it just as much if not than the Breakers.
An incredible experience, must see in person
This much marble can't be missed. Highly recommend if you have a multi-house tour pass. The massive front door-gates and marble throughout are stunning.
So eloquent with a lot of charm!
Everything was great except they added these modern art statues everywhere. They really ruin the look of the building and make getting a nice picture of any the rooms near impossible. If they got rid of the statues it would make the experience much better.
Nice place to visit, very interesting history, nice property. A bit too dark for picture and very hot inside. While they had fans, it was stifling at times. The audio tour was excellent, working, easy to use.
Phenomenal place, a must-see while visiting Newport!
Very nice experience, good for culture attractions. Outstanding customer services
Beautiful building on the coast of Newport Rhode island with a classic car show on-site
Awesome house to tour when your in the area. Unique displays of antiquities and craftsmanship are within and out of the mansion.
Interesting place to tour.
An amazing example of Gilded Age architecture and luxury.
Exquisite! Gorgeous place
Informative tour. Takes you back to those good old days and the grandeur of the place left me breathless
What an amazing place, we spent about 2 hrs exploring this beautiful marble mansion built for the Vanderbilt family in 1888, totally lost track of time in the tour just amazed by the uniqueness of each room and the history behind the creations. The staff on site was very knowledgeable and friendly, a must see while your visiting Newport RI for sure.
Beautiful mansion. Great day in Newport for Newport Wine and Food Fest.
One of Newport mansions. Beautiful architecture.
I enjoyed the self guided tour. The house and property was pretty neat.
Very nice. Get the $36 pass. They are all very cool mansions.
Cliff walk is really nice, bring water to stay hydrated
One of my favorite mansion tours
Beautiful building and location. Important to the history of the women's rights movement.
Enjoyed this self guided tour, interesting and informative.
Best of the great house, especially at Christmas. Newport, RI see you again next year.
Incredible architecture and decoration. Thanks for the tremendous effort of saving these wonderful buildings
An amazing place from a time that is no longer. No expenses were spared to design and furnish the mansion. From today's perspective, it is probably over the top, and it probably already was 130 years ago. Visiting this ultra luxury place takes you on a very unique journey.
Brilliant. Never seen so much marble and gold leaf. There isn't another house in America with so much marble. It's on the floor on the walls and up the stairs! The story of the Vanderbilt family is fascinating and the self guided audio tour is really good with lots of information about the house and the people who lived there. Well worth a visit.
