REVIEWS OF Croatan National Forest IN North Carolina

Great place for camping trail walking and just spending time at one with nature. Free to use. All they ask is you leave spot clean and fires all the way out. River swimming so water for a good ways is knee deep. Watch for Jellyfish...

I love this Forest. Be careful on Catfish road though, it could get real bumpy. Too bad they don't have camp grounds over near the Catfish Lake part.

Charles Katt

Tony Hewitt

Nice, well kept trail. Bridges through the marshlands.

Amber Blais

The drive in was a little rough due to pot holes but it wasn't insurmountable. We wanted to see the forest so we walked along the road because we couldn't find a trail. Does anyone maintain these things? The road was pretty pleasant and the forest was beautiful. We saw a lizard.

Darren Fulcher

Great for true boondocking!!

Frankie D

It's beautiful. But idk why someone posted a picture of the water near the forest. But both are gorgeous

Mike Smith

Over all a great place to stay need to do some repairs to restrooms and showers need more hot water.

Bruce Albin

This is the dirtiest National Forest I've ever seen. Apart from all the trash then you have the tree management were they clear-cut so much and then if that's not bad enough they have all the control burning which I guess in our areas is a necessary evil.

Randy Harrell

Bueatiful, as a native Californian, I'm always amazed at the Coastal beauty of NC.

Jedediah Seltzer

This is a nice coastal forest with some nice trails for backpacking. The Nuesioktrail is just over 20 miles and nice one night trip if you run a shuttle.

Cecil Verde

The croatan national Forest is just like any other national Forest, great place to go to see nature in its natural form, great place to take the family and friends and be one with nature in its natural form the cost to enter is free

David Stahr

Food was excellent! My daughter and I went and both had very good meals. She had the Cuban, and I the bbq special. Took one star for the delay in getting food. Was not that crowded, but took a long time to get the food as well as the check.

Thomas Buchter

Good example of a North Carolina coastal plain forest.

S.V. Miller

Beautiful park. I do recommend knowing where you're going before you plan a trip here. My husband and I tried to do some backpacking in one of the wilderness areas, and the brush was so thick, we couldn't go more than a few yards. Also, the roads into the park are rather rough, so plan accordingly.

lee sinnott

The Croatan is ABSOLUTELY the BEST. It isn't just a local treasure but a National treasure. I recommend everyone explore our forest. There are many roads a person can navigate easily in their car. Once you find your favorite spot, get out and go explore!! There are many excellent wildlife trails for hiking. Pick up a guide at your local Parks and Rec! Have fun and enjoy!

camorrisiii

I love the Croatan National Forest, I pretty much grew up with the CNF as my back yard, literally my father's property borders the CNF. The forest is well maintained with controlled burns and etc. I've hunted, fished, and camped in the CNF. …

Terry Kostiuk

Gorgeous! Extremely quiet and tranquil!

Ashley

Bring bug spray!!

Christopher Brown

Roads need grading and mowing.

Todd Rademacher

Any national forest is a good national forest.

Katelyn

Great scenery and trails, but the only complaint I have is all the trees still knocked over from hurricane Florence. That isn't a pretty sight.

Baconious

Samantha H.

Love the woods and the beauty it has to offer

Dennis Douthett

Loved the visit to the woods. However many trees are still down from hurricane Florence. Will take many months for USFS to take care of forest roads and trails.

Andrew Hascup

Grew up in the Croatan. Woods is heaven. Towns around it are ran over with drugs.. the local beaches are just condos and expensive parking. But the forest is amazing

Michael Benson

Lots of space to have an adventure!

Kelly Wale

Love looking at the crabs and its clean!

Isaiah Jones

It's a beautiful area

Vincent Meeks

Roads are still fairly beat up from flooding caused by the hurricane last year. In fact, the road at the corner of Catfish Lake road and where the OHV park is closed, awaiting repairs. Most of the roads are in bad shape still. The last time I was there at Great Lake, the catfish were not biting. That was about a month and a half ago. The only thing I caught were some really good naps. Laying there next to the lake on a warm day with the sun on me. Felt good. Be careful with your vehicle not to get stuck in holes or go off in the ditch. The speed limit is 35 mph. Go a little slower because of the road conditions. Very rough on your shocks and tires.

Vincent Rousseau

Awesome place to visit.

Marcus D.

If your a NC local or frequent visitor who loves the outdoors this is a great recommendation.

Txcoinman69

Great place when you have deep thoughts to just sit an watch the sunset, an your deep thoughts disappear just like the setting sun....

Petra Volinski

Love this place. I fortunately they cater to hunters which is less than 30% of population that wants to safely use it year round.

Jack Walker

Nice place. On ferry road. Nature trails on the right, an a day park on the Left. Picknic tables and restroom.

Andrew Servis

Good hiking and camping. Just make sure you have good bug protection those flies are insane.

Joe B

Easily accessible.

Grew up like ole Tom Sawyer or Huckleberry Finn scavenging the forest

Sandra Black

This is my happy place love that picture

Brian Kress

I hiked a portion of Weetok Trail and it was well marked. They have cleared all the large trees that fell from Florence. It is not ideal for a trail run..definitely were pants if running.

ASE TECH

It was closed off, shut down due to hurricane Florence. I hope it will be reopened very soon. It's a beautiful Forrest and wonderful trails and wildlife. Then I'll give it a full 5 stars Friends, just found out there is a current update to relate...found out the Croatan Forrest is now open...A very reliable person who lives nearby there has told me....So if your looking for a place to camp or bring your RV or john boat or kayak,,,it;s a great place to visit, for a day or longer...

no name

Beautiful. I rode through by boat and did some fishing. Very low key and scenic.

Ashley Menges

Lots of closed trails. Good for hunting but would not recommend for much else. We wanted to camp but the trails to the area were either closed or impassable even with 4WD

So wild. Love it

Mick Svoyer

Tall pines and dense under growth, check out the warden station before you go ... Maybe a pass or permit is required to use this place, seems like I get shook down every time I visit this place, John Wayne sherrifs state boys and federalli will make contact with you. Happens every time kinda ruins the experience a little.

Michael Lowe

Decent for little nature walks.

Loretta Mann

It's great.

Alex Trelka

Better than 29 stumps.

Laura Gammons

Awesome...just flew over it!

J W

Multiple long trails, some areas littered with little fiddler crabs. Very neat to see and not dangerous

Ken Fisher

dan byrd

Terrence Greene

Mostly piney flat land but peaceful surroundings

Paul Wilkerson

Beautiful place to hunt if the mosquitos don't kill you. Wish they would do more controlled burns though. Very thick, and hard to see, hike or hunt without dogs. If your deer runs, good luck getting to it.

Plain ole Beth

Nice little place

Dennis Hayward

Trees and rivers and streams, oh my! Eastern North Carolina is beautiful.

Brandon Blackmore

Great terrain, excellent swamps and more plants than you can eat

Michael Hargrove

What is there to say it's a forest but it's a good place to get away and relax and clear your mind

Kristine West

awesome, bug spray is a must have. keep on look out for snakes and biting flies

Rick Nobers

Only entered it from 58 (Maysville) but can be entered at several places along 24 and 70. It is a vast woodland/bog/estuary type thing with lots of trails etc. It's ok.

Michelle Williams

My favorite spot!

Pasquale Caruso

Beautiful Forrest

Travis Napier

Vast space for activities. Lots of trees and water. Dirt roads for miles and even more off the beaten path places to go.

Matt Kreitz

Great place for families

Ricky Lewis

Beautiful wilderness to bad it has been covered in litter.

Pascal Burns II

I plan to take my family yearly.

Bobbie Ebersole

Great place for primitive camping, it also has several normal campgrounds too. Many places for fishing and kayaking. It has several different hiking trail for the adventurer to enjoy.

Daniel Edinger

I love living near the Croatan. So much land, so many opportunities. Sadly, the place isn’t always treated well by the public. At the end of every service road, it seems, is a pile or trash, shot in TVs and old couches. I wish the pubic would take better care of our precious resources. Most of the trash I see could be dropped off at the local transfer stations for free.

Wayne P

Great place to go kayaking or walk along the trail. The trail is we'll kept and there are bridges crossing the marshes where you get fantastic views of the White Oak River, Jones Island and Swansboro. Paddling over to Jones Island is only 15 minutes. Once there you'll find a nice sandy beach where you can sit and relax for awhile.Paddling further around there is an access point to the island. Exploring that entire area is a lot if fun and we'll worth the trip. Lots of photo opportunities also if you're a shutterbug.

William Parson

Almost untouched forest. Great gettaway close to home

Patrick Hall
