REVIEWS OF Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site IN North Carolina

Frances Covey

Beautiful place. There is a walk up hill to the homeplace but not too bad. Did not tour the house this time. Had done that several years ago. Interesting. Love history.

Katy Beebe

We loved the hikes and meeting the goats! The rangers/staff was so friendly and informative. And we didn't go on the house tour so it was totally free. Great day!

Pam Helland

The hike up to the house was energizing. The tour of the was interesting and the cost was reasonable. I would recommend a visit - even with children. Even if the children aren't interested in seeing the house, they can visit the goat barns. One can feed and pet goats and run around the expansive grounds. It's worth a trip.

Nancy Jones

Beautiful! Take a hike & make sure u go into the book/gift store! All money goes for preserving the home and land.

Xavier Green

Wonderful hiking trail with the family. Educational with the history and interactive on the goat farm. Bev sure to reserve the home visit early, especially on holidays. Also, bring bug repellent.

Shawn Watson

Very nice grounds. Relaxing walk on trails and visiting the goat yard is enjoyable.

Kitty Hoover

Great historical display and significant information from that period Well done!

Gary Hildenbrand

Neat place but long walk uphill to the house & goats.

Jo Peterson Gibbs Landreth

We take our seventh grade students each year, and they love it! It is the perfect balance of activity and learning: genetics, cuddling with baby goats, learning about Sandburg through the observation of artifacts, poetry writing, hiking, and poetry performance.

Ann Hoffman

Finally lucky enough to get a tour of the Sandburg home! Thank you to our amazing Guide Sandy! She made this unique part of our history and the incredible Carl Sandburg and family come to life.

The trails are very well maintained. And really enjoyed myself. If you like solitude get there early, as it starts to get busy on the trails around 11 AM. I will say, all the walkers and hikers that I met were very friendly.

Thomas Cera

Beautiful place to walk and take in some culture and history. Beware that it is a climb to get to the house.

kay beach

We had a lot of fun visiting here. It’s a lot of walking tho so be prepared. The grounds are beautiful and the goats are oh so cute! We spent several hours just walking and sight seeing around the grounds. It was a nice leisurely way to spend an afternoon.

The house tour is fine, the real treasures are the hiking trails and the goat barn. The baby goats are so darling and full of life joy.

Megan Hicks

Kind of a let down. To be sure, it's a very pretty estate but for me it had an undertone that left me mildly sad when I left.

Teresa Farver

What a gem! Great place to take the grands for a few hours of great fun. We visited the goat barn and the goats are awesome. Going back soon. Loved it.

We spent the day walking the nature trails and having a picnic! The trails are clean and easy to access and so is the picnic area!

Beautiful estate and the sweetness of their lives represented well. They finally finished renovations and the tour worth every bit of the $5! The hike to Glass Mountain was cool and shaded and beautiful.

David Bestys

Love this place. Free. Great hikes. Quiet.

Susan Dye

Great tour. Call to accessible access and avoid walk up the hill. Gotta see the goats.

Tim Ruff

Beautiful grounds, easy walk. Loved the petting farm and the baby goats.

ryan jordan

One of the most beautiful places on Earth. I could have stayed here all day. The hills, the grass, the goats, the lake, and the house are just fantastic and peaceful. There's plaques by all the small houses giving bits of history. I did not take the house tour because we were on a slight schedule and spent too much time taking in the beauty of the land.

William Schaub

Great hike in a lovely setting. Make sure you see the goats, but watch your clothing and where you step.

Lee Worsham

Good short hikes, very nice property. Didn't go in, but will next time.

Justin Taylor

The grounds are amazing, just enough history detailed on various signage, but nothing to overshadow the peace and quiet Carl Sandburg sought in residing here.

Mishelle Gray

Our tour guide was AWESOME and made our first tour memorable. A beautiful National Park. Lots of walking. But totally worth it. Baby goats, too!!

Dakota Anderson

I love the Sandburg home. Been coming here since I was a child, now I bring my children all the time we walk the trails and around the lake. See the goats. Its a great place to go and just sit and take it all in also

Katrina Reeves

My husband and I have wanted to visit for years, and this weekend we finally made it. It was absolutely beautiful. Seeing it as if the family had just stepped away for the moment lent a keen insight into the the interests, inspiration, and energy that was Sandburg. From the snowdrops just emerging in the secret garden to the forsythia blooming along the path to the Wordsworthian daffodils by the goat barn, the flowers welcomed us. A cat-footed fog enveloped us on the walk up, its quiet insulation making us feel as if we were the only ones visiting. Magical, peaceful, beautiful. A definite return trip!

Kevin Kitchen

Good family outside activity. Good hiking, and educational of local historical figure. Always baby goats in the spring.

Anne Mehrling

You feel you've met the Sandburgs after touring the house.

Yvette Sanders

Nice to learn a little history and visit this home about a famous American writer while taking a break from outdoor adventures with the family. Free 30 minute play at 10:15 a.m. was cute and family friendly.

Robert Hunter

Great property with a wonderful history. There are several hiking trails and the main residence has been restored. They recently added a stage area too. Don't miss this one national treasure.

Sarah Joy Albrecht

Beautiful place and wonderful history.

Stephen Heeney

Place is ALWAYS a fun place to go. Kids love the goats

Robin Gowin

nice place to walk and learn about history

John Jimison

Learned a lot I didn't know about the man, and it was a good place to hike.

Varrick Nunez

Outstanding monument from one of America's great authors, a wonderful place to learn more about him, his farm life. Lovely hike up to Glass Mountain, a mostly bald top with excellent views in several directions. Free to visit grounds, house may have a fee to tour. Parking can be full at times but overflow parking at Flat Rock Playhouse across the street. Handicapped shuttle available on request, my Dad really appreciated that.

Benjamin Raske

Definitely worth a trip for the out of town-er. Great walking trails, fun history. They have a show that is popular with the kids.

Penney Douglas

I loved walking the trail. It was uphill in some places and challenging, but the trails have steps cut into them and sturdy wood keeping the steps solid and secure. It was beautiful. There were benches set where you could rest. There were stations around the pond where you could help them test the water quality. There was a lot more there to do relating to Carl Sandburg that looked very interesting. I would have liked to do more but only had time for the walk. They have a goat barn that I would have loved to see.

Shawna McAlwee

It was beautiful there. The goats were cute. It was very educational. Love it.

Michael Patrick

Great trails. Clean restrooms. Not much parking. Short but strenuous hike up to the house, but there is a shuttle to the top for those who need it.The goat barn is a lot of fun for kids. Everyone is allowed to go inside the fence and pet the goats. Parking, hiking and the goats are free. There may be a fee to take a tour of the actual Carl Sandburg home.

Kimberly Pierson

It is beautiful. The goats are so cute.

Maggie

Beautiful home with history and a great property for exploring

Wendy Wyatt

Loved this visit! Great guided tour of home, sampling of goat cheese, and able to pet goats!

tellthtmick

very beautiful place to walk around and visit the goats. also very cute cat named josh

Nick Doriot

A nice stop to get a glimpse of history and some hiking. You can visit for free and walk the grounds during their open hours. If you would like to see the house you can pay a small fee for a tour. There is plenty to do and see without going in the house however. They have several out building and barns as well as a goat farm where you can pet the goats. There are also several miles of trails to explore and enjoy.

Timothy Mutambuki

It's a lovely place. The goats are pretty normal but there one huge one with a name that makes it absolutely worth it. The story of Carl Sandburg is also quite enchanting. The guides are also very eager to show you around and answer all your questions.

Casey Robinson

So beautiful, nice staff, & we loved the goats!

J D

An inspiration for anyone who wants a big yard. A gem of a time capsule property. Quality trails with moderate challenge.

El Viejo Cabra

Great place to visit. Bob Dylan dropped by in '63 to say hi and stayed for about 15 minutes. At which time Carl said "Well I have some work to do, thanks for stopping by." True story!!!

Robert Gaydos

Great tour. Guide was very 8nformation on the life and career of Sandberg. Original artifacts in the home. Super to see period pieces

Jane Burrus

A

Michael Racine

Great fun for the family. Historical, literary and goats!

Emma Beichner

Very beautiful to walk around and interesting. The goats are so cute and friendly too! I've been here twice and I've loved it both times. The first time I went I did the tour of the house and our guide was amazing!

Jennifer Pratt Mead

I have visited at least a dozen times- and toured the Carl Sandberg home once. The Connemara estate offers varied walking and hiking trails, including two paths to reach the top of Glassy Mountain. Visit the goats, check out the new amphitheater, and know your leashed dog is welcome on the trails.

illona lipovsky

Great walking trails. Petting and learning about the goats was interesting and fun. Good place for dog walking too.

Diana Brown

Free and beautiful. Lots of walking trails. Makes for a great day Outdoors.

Marie Duncan

Excellent tour!! Filled with history of both Mr and Mrs Sandburg.

Phill Henry

Very educational. Good parking with nice trails to walk... Will visit again

Katrina Davisson

Steve was a most excellent guide through the Sandburg home. We also enjoyed petting the award-winning goats who were lovingly cared for by the staff.

Cheryl Mullenax

I worked here on a summer teen program 42 years ago and loved it. Not much has chamged; thankfully!

Tonya Miller

Be prepared for the up hill walk from the parking area. May be difficult for those pushing strollers, smalled children and folks with difficulty walking. They offer handicap 'rides' up, but for those not quite handicap, but just old and slow like me, you may find walk up hill challenging. But back down is a breeze and you can look forward to that.

B G

The house is beautiful. Love to visit even if just for a walk through the woods!

nations 1018

Very beautiful and fun place to visit. I particularly love the history of it.

Anthony Piferrer

The Carl Sandburg home is such a magical place and every year for four straight vacations we make it a point to visit. There is a little of everything here to enchant the soul: the lovely home of a famous poet with all its history, the charming goat barn and its furry inhabitants grazing on an idyllic mountain pasture, and mountain trails that take you to a truly peaceful place. You cannot visit Flat Rock--or this part of NC, in general--and not stop by this landmark.

Daniel Overstreet

Great hike. Really nice people.

Lauren Berry

Lovely place for a day trip! Very interesting and educational. The property is just gorgeous, and the goats were delightful. We were able to see two that were just born! They were so cute in their little sweaters! We also picked up some lotion and goat milk fudge from their store. We will definitely be back for a full visit.

Carrie Breen-Fuller

This was a great tour. The history and walk of the park was amazing. Our whole family enjoyed the experience.

Erin Syfert

This is one of our favorite places to take the kids and stroll. We can walk a little ways up the main hill and see the goats (we love the babies in the spring!). We can hike back into the woods and take a longer, slightly hilly path around the lake without feeling we have committed a huge chunk of time to the outing. We can also hike to the top, get a great walk, take a lunch and spend a long time enjoying the view.

Jerry Adams

Very interesting beautiful setting, tour was good.

Dan Brinson

Beautiful grounds, very peaceful setting, easy to see why Mr Sandbugh loved it so.

Lindsay Mixon

They have goats!

Alissa Meredith

We love it. So beautiful and peaceful. Thanks for saving this lovely place for us all to enjoy.

lisa morse

Beautiful and tranquil. Can definitely see how he got a lot of writing done. The goats are adorable!

Mark Farver

The grandchildren loved visiting the goat barn. They had babies from two different breeds there to pet as well as lots friendly adults.

Leather wulf

Goats nice folks and free water.

Olivia Palmer

Can be very busy and parking can be difficult, but well worth it. The hikes are beautiful!

E Cohan

We love to come hike on the trails surrounding this historic house. The view from the top is worth the climb and a big rock nice for picnics! Also, stopping by the barn to see the goats is a must. Love it when there are baby goats there!

Random Weekend Project

A very nice old place full of history and love it is truly amazing and a wonderful view of the mountain. It also is a great hiking trip. I recommend wearing layers because it will be very cold and you might get hot from the hikes.

Rich Windsor

Very good for a day trip. Parking was tough but we were within walking distance of our room so decided it was easier than trying to drive. Onsite guide was excellent and the price is very reasonable.

Daniel Walker

Always enjoy coming here. You can get a good walk in and enjoy the garden, the goats, and the woods. Too bad the fish pond is not still in use. Modern bathrooms are very convenient.

M Blevins

Loved the tour, the house is fascinating! Even if I didn't know much about Sandburg it was worth the trip. Totally affordable and the best part might have been the fact you could pet the goats. Loved our tour guide and the team of volunteers could not have been more helpful and friendly!

Jamye Sanders

This is a lovely place. The parking can be difficult as the lots are spaced out and on a busy road. You can easily miss the turn into the parking lot. There is a short hike to get to the house which can be difficult for those who are in advanced stages of pregnancy or have health issues. The house tour is very informative. The hike to glassy mountain is worth it for those who have the stamina to do it. It does have a some technicality to it, so go prepared! This spot does get busy, even during the week, but especially during leafing season for those who come to watch the leaves change. Really enjoyed this!

JONATHAN TEAGUE

It is a great place to visit and awesome views of the Mtns. Very good author when he was alive.

Linda Papagan

Beautiful, peaceful grounds and hiking trails for all level of hikers. My favorite part was the goat barn.

Tonya Watkins

Enjoyed hearing Carl and his wife via video. Loved visiting Paul's goats.

Danielle Hoffmann

Always a pleasure to go for a walk here. My kids love visiting the goats and chickens.

Anne Rose

Gained a more in-depth understanding of Carl Sandburg. The trail up to the house is a bit of a hike but well worth it. One "warning" for those with mobility issues, touring the house involves climbing stairs.

Wyatt Reeves

Such a gorgeous home. The tour was simply divine. I love old homes and architecture, and this place does not lack.

Robert Eddy

We have never toured the house! We go to walk and see and pet the goats. It is free, can't beat that. Lots of hiking available if you are up to it.

Patricia Beaty

Ever so peaceful! Hiking for hours on lovely trails. Great gift shop. House was closed for reconstruction while I was there so you didn't get a chance to go through the home. Will definitely return.

Jessica Johnson

The staff close to the goats were sweet as pie and super informative. My 6 year old and I had a great time meeting the goats and learning about them. My daughter even got to feed the chickens.

Luc Benjamin

Great service for you want a home game is a good idea to get a free pass on my phone was stolen by a few weeks work and I can go back home after school if you don't know what I mean it is the same time I was going through the same thing you said no one to me if it looks cute cat like a full size woman who 7th grade

Pat Adrounie

Beautiful farm and main home. Also a small number of dairy goats you can meet. Staff is very friendly. Definitely worth the the uphill walk from the parking area.

Jeff Easler

Beautiful land and friendly staff. Loved the goats.

Cherie Miller

It's a beautiful place to hike and just wander around with the goats. The volunteers and workers are very helpful and friendly, too. We had a great time. Everything is free, unless you'd like go tour the home. Then it's just a small fee that goes towards the upkeep. There's also a lake with a hiking path around it. Nice clean facilities and even a water fountain with a water bottle refill option.

Kristin

Nice location for an easy (and pretty) walk. Well maintained.

Christel-Jana Cooper

Seriously lovely place and the baby goats were so sweet! The staff were so kind and helpful to a bunch of mamas and their little kiddos who came for a visit.

Matthew & Sarah Plyler

This is an amazing place! It is calm and quiet and so pretty. The goat farm is fun, and the main house is beautiful. We hiked up to the top of the Glassy Mtn trail and the view is well worth the hike up! Had a great time and will definitely be going back to enjoy the scenery again.

Angie Smith

This place has such a breathtaking view. You can understand why Sandburg fell in love with it. If you like history, this home is filled with it. Most items are left exactly as they were and it is like stepping back in time 50 years. Neat!

Todd Touchberry

Cool place but a hike up the driveway/trail.

Sandy Gates

This place will make any bad a great one! Peaceful, serene. The main home of Carl Sandburg sits on top of a hill so it is a bit strenuous with stairs in the trail. But well worth the climb. He was a an incredibly creative man who I believe his home must have given him inspiration! Many trails to explore most on the hilly side, an interpretive center and loads of informative signs. I'll be returning for sure!

Allison Washington

So wonderful. Rich history, amazing people, beautiful grounds and house. Tour of the house is only $5! Unbelievable. Amazing. Gorgeous.

Kylen Sneed

I learned a lot about Carl Sandburg with my class it was great it has good people taking good care of a good house...i recommend coming here because I love it and I hope you will love it as well...it has goats, pond,a buteful house,a garden, and it's kidfriendly so you should take your kids or your parents your siblings and you can take your pets but not in the house son hope you like it.

Michal Dennis

Very disappointed to get there and then find out we'd have to wait almost an hour and a half to take your, so we just visited the grounds and gardens

Carmen A

Carl Sandburg is a beautiful place for a day with your family, or a nice place to go alone and still feel safe. There is hiking/walking trails for all levels & ages. The goats are fun to watch and friendly towards visitors. There are tours of the home available.

Stephanie Schulz

We paid the small fee for a guided tour and it was wonderful. We learned SO much there. BEAUTIFUL grounds with 5 miles of walking trails. We even spent time with the goats from Mrs Sandburgs original breeding stock. Nice gift shop too. Clean bathrooms. No snack food there so bring water. NOTE: If you need handicap accessibility you need to use a call button and arrange for pickup from the parking lot. No elevator in house so second floor is inaccessible to wheelchairs.
