REVIEWS OF Sterling Hill Mining Museum IN New Jersey

Really awesome you get to see antique mining gear and actually go inside the mine. Good for bigger kids who can listen to a guide for about an hour. Very informative for adults though. Also try the pasties at the store, which the miners actually ate, and are also very yummy!

J

It's very cool so bring a sweater. Wear waterproof shoes because there's puddles of water. There's no cell service inside the mine. Bring a flashlight or use your phone's to avoid water. The fluorescent rocks were the coolest parts.

I love rocks and geology so this place was amazing for me. We showed up early and do the rock pile dig which is fun you dig through the piles of rocks that they have can purchase anything that you find and like. We also checked out the display cases that they had in the office. There were many different stones you never really see around this area. Before you actually get to the mine you see there expansive display cases which have hundreds of beautiful gems and stones from across the world. The mine was nice it was in good condition easy to traverse and still had much of the old equipment left for display. The like I'm the mine was beautiful and they still have the set from where the mine scene in Zoolander was shot in the mine. This place is a great time for they kids or any rock enthusiast.

Yosef Bogomilsky

Would not hesitate to go again when the opportunity presents itself. Because the mine is naturally regulated to 56 degrees, its works in the summer or winter.

Amy was an excellent guide, had the children participate and also spoke over children and adults talking during the tour. She always had everyone gather round and asked if everyone could hear her. Excellant tour, Thank you ,Amy!

Natasha Schafer

Such a cool tour, lots of intersting displays, and tons of incredible specimens. Worth going twice.

Alexander L

Nice rocks. Good food. Good place to hold a wedding.

Lisa

So much fun!! Very interesting.

Jessica Rolon-Banker

Very cool mine to tour. The tour guides were very knowledgeable and knew their stuff.

Scott Reynolds

Fun museum and mining tour. This is a great place for kids but be sure they wear good shoes - you don't want to wear flip-flops down in the mines. Our tour guide - Amy - was fun and engaging. She shared stories about the history of the mine and what it was like to work down there. I think the highlight for many of us were the rocks that glowed under the UV lights. Give yourself a few hours to arrive, park, get tickets and the tour.

Lukechard Fud

Great and fun place to visit. Tony is very knowledgeable and it is well worth the admission fee ($12 adult) for the 2-hour tour!

koren suter

My first time visiting was participating in the 5k Mine Run. It was pretty cool to experience. Hope to visit and do the tour soon.

kristine kjekstad

Went during the week when they don't normally do tours, but since there was a lot of people they went the extra mile and gave us a tour anyways. It's a bit long, but it's an overall amazing tour and totally worth the trip. If it's nice out it's also worth doing the pit and searching for some cool rocks to bring home.

Bronie S

Awesome collection of rocks, minerals and fluorescent rocks. Definitely take a tour of the mine since it's the only way to see the famous Rainbow Tunnel. You can go rockhounding at the dumps (weather permitting)

Jeff Leine

The museum is really interesting. There are many interesting rock specimens. I would have liked to spend more time there. The tour is also great. The whole thing is a great value and a nice way to spend a few hours.

Courtney Robb

Friendly knowledgeable staff, informative mine tour, great gift shop & activities. They even have a cafe! A positive, fun experience for the whole family!

Justin Bank

Beautiful property with good exhibition of old mining equipment near the parking lot. There also is a steel beam from the World Trade Center in New York from 9/11 in a nice memorial. The tour takes you into one of the old miner’s locker room buildings, transformed into a large exhibit hall with the communal showers now occupied by a large collection of extremely high-end mineral specimens. There is also a large periodic table display at one end of this building with samples of each element in their respective boxes, with noble gas lamps as well. The tour also takes you into the mineshaft where you can see the rainbow room, where they turn the lights off and turn the UV lights on, and the walls of the mineshaft glow bright red and green, with large boulders of other colors there too. After the mine, you go through the fluorescent minerals exhibit building, where you can view hundreds of beautiful fluorescent mineral specimens from Sterling Hill and around the world. The tour is 2 hours long, with 30 minutes in the first exhibit building, 1 hour in the mine, and 30 minutes in the fluorescent minerals building. Collecting at the mine run dump is okay, though most things are covered in willemite dust, which shows up green under short wave UV. Long wave helps to bypass this, however, long wave is not provided in the dark shed, and it also misses some shortwave-only minerals. I recommend going to a scheduled night dig if it is convenient or a dig where you can access the back area of the dump which is much less picked over. The minerals of the world pile also has some nice fluorescents.

Worth a visit. There are two guided tours of around 2 hrs each 10am-12noon; 1pm-3pm. Quite a bit of walking required - one flight of stairs and a few hundred feet inside the adit level of mine. Expect it to be a little dirty, damp place being a mine.

Maria Huapalla

Had such a fun time with my fiance. The tour guide was very funny and made the experience a lot of fun

Karin Bond

The mine and Museum continue to improve displays and tours. We had a great time at the Scout Camporee.

This place was very informative the tour into the mine was great

Melissa Musto

very interesting. Tour guide gave a lot of information. My 11 year old was very interested paid attention the whole time this place is great wood go back

Les Gesteland

Two lively & enthusiastic docents gave a very informative and entertaining tour of the mining museum, the zinc mine, and the fluorescent minerals museum. A must-see in the mining museum is the periodic-table wall, which provides physical samples of most elements of the periodic table (those that aren't radioactive or explosive). Walking through the zinc mine was an eye-opening experience, letting you see what it was like to work in such a damp, dangerous environment. The Rainbow Tunnel was a delight. It was surpassed only in beauty by the fluorescent minerals mine--three rooms of sparkling stones that are amazing to see. The tour took 2 hours and my teenage sons and me found it well worth our time.

Patrick Kimball

Incredible tour. Our guide Tony was amazing in his presentation.

Amir Goldman

Educational and informative place. My cousins liked here pretty much.

Anthony Sawicki

It's absolutely fantastic

Johnny Kamp

What a fun...beautiful place!!!

נעמה רענן

So interesting for the whole family. It's a guided tour of two hours, could have been nice to have more time in the first part of the museum. Not too cold but lots of water on the ground. Recommended, we'll definitely be coming again

Jerome C

Was a great experience. Definitely worth the trip. The tour was fun and interesting. Bring a light jacket as it can get a bit chilly in the mines. Shoes might get a little dirty and dusty so plan accordingly.

Tony Francovilla

Extraordinary friendly helpful folks.

Maryann

This place is truly amazing! On the tour, you get to learn so much about the location, and how the mining operation happened back in the day. The fluorescent rocks found in the caves, as well as the (several) museums are a must see! The gift shop is filled with all sorts of fun rock samples too. The tour itself lasted approximately 2 hours. The guides are also extremely willing to answer any questions you may have, and if they aren't sure, they will ask some of the other staff once the tour is over. I was honestly too interested in everything going on to take many pictures, but I did take a few of the fluorescent rocks. ☺️

Maria Pough

Informative and my 9 yo loved it!

Nasya Bailey

Great school trip for the kids. It was a little damp inside but I expected nothing less from a mine.

Kevin Scully

Surprisingly fascinating. You should go.

Tal s

The museum is nice the mine- not much to see

Michael Cohen

Unique fluorescent rock formations! Amazing tour!

Kevin Murphy

Well educated tour guides. Fun and exciting mine.

Victoria Karaman

Interesting museum for every age. Never seen fluorescent minerals before. Mine was especially exciting - all these minerals in real nature!

John Walsh

Very interesting tour for all ages.

Pam L.

I found this place by searching online for things to do in N.J. I had no idea what to expect, but it looked interesting. We were not disappointed. The museum held many, many beautiful and exotic rock samples, and our tour guide though the mine was lively and made it interesting. At the end of the 2 hours, I was thinking how fast the time had passed. We brought light jackets b/c of the 56° temp, but many on the tour did not have one and were ok. The walking was easy. Glad to have found this place.

Franches Frotto

Debbie was an amazing tour guide, 10/10 would recommend

Lindsay Stecklein

One of the more unique and interesting guided tours I’ve been on. Miner Ray was a great tour guide, slicing up Puns all over the place. He was super engaging with a large crowd of all ages. Even past the tour, there’s tons of cool things on the grounds and in the museum to discover and explore.

Gregory Sugalski

Very fun and interesting place to visit for adults and kids alike. Went with my kids ages 8, 5 and 2 and they all enjoyed it. The tour does involved a bit of walking but isnt terrible and can be done with a stroller. They particularly liked the rock discovery program after the mine tour.

Bob Barclay

Great place to take the kids and let them explore. The mine tour is great, just be prepared to walk. My kids got tired after walking for a bit, but we made it through, and then they had lots of fun with the rock discovery and the sifting area for gems and fossils from the store.

Joe Alonzo

Great time.. nice museum.. a lot of history and things to do for all ages.. although my sister and myself went at night for a ghost tour of the mines.. which was very good, well organized and very active.. the whole place had a good vibe.. want to go back soon

Matthew Hoy

Went there with our newborn and 8 year old today to escape the heat (the mine is a consistent 56F). It's in the town next to us and we passed it a million times, but we weren't sure what to expect. This place is AMAZING! Our tour guide Amy was so energetic and knowledgeable, you can tell she really enjoys her job! The whole tour allowed us to bring the stroller throughout, and our 8 year old loved it. The mine is pretty damp and cool, but felt good on this hot summer day. No where did it smell of mildew or mold. They have cases upon cases of minerals and mining nostalgia. We learned ALOT! Great for all ages, and very educational. Well worth the price of admission. We would go again in a heartbeat, and would highly recommend this museum!

Елена Якимович

It is such a nice place to visit with your family. Make sure you bring a jacket with you, it is very much needed when you go down to the mine. Kids want to go vack again.

sbrumme99 tt

My wife believes that the mine is the greatest place in the world because 5 seconds of Zoolander was filmed here. I like it because it's entertaining for the kids, lots to see and experience here. They do several special events here but if you don't come for Halloween you're missing out on a lot of fun. I don't know how many actors / volunteers they get for that but it feels like hundreds. By far the best Halloween experience for the money. Other than that.... There's some very nice rocks

John Amosa

Interesting place but needs a little tlc.

Mark Rogers

Really great experience if you like rocks! If you don't like rocks, it's still pretty cool! Very reasonable rates as well.

Noor Q

Amazing mine, extremely friendly staff, great rock collecting, 5 out of 5 stars, met greater than my expectations. This mine is the reason our nation won the war of independence, it’s supply of metals and minerals, such as zinc, manganese, copper, and alloys were unmatched around the whole world. Great mine!

Pale Goth

Drove an hour to come see this place and take a tour, and it was well worth it! Me and my boyfriend had so much fun taking the tour. Our first stop in the tour was in the museum, which was pretty interesting. Next, we went to the florescent rock/mineral museum which was definitely my favorite part! It was so crazy and super cool. All the neon colored rocks and minerals lighting up was very beautiful and really cool to look at. Last, we went through the mine/cave which was interesting to learn about and really fun to walk through it and see the structure of it all. The only downfall was we were unaware the cave was partially flooded during the dates we went, which meant certain parts of the cave we couldn’t explore or see, and we had to do the tour differently then how it usually is done because we couldn’t go to certain parts due to the flooding. We had fun either way though, and were still happy to have went even though we couldn’t see all of the parts of the usual tour. The girl giving us the tour was very friendly, she seemed to know what she was talking about and gave us a lot of information that was interesting to hear about. I didn’t realize that the tour is not only looking around, but we receive a lot of knowledge and information from the tour guide, so it is also a good learning experience. This place is good for every age as well, which I thought was awesome. I saw kids being taken on our group tour as young as 10, and I also saw an elderly couple on our tour wanting to experience the cave as well. So it’s welcoming to any ages and anyone interested in going! The tour is roughly 2 hours long so you get a good experience for your money. Just make sure you go online to check the tour times, because I believe there is only one or two SCHEDULED TOURS most days and you need to arrive before that tour leaves or else you’re out of luck. We almost didn’t know this information and were just going to show up randomly to request a tour, so thank god before leaving I checked the website again and figured out there are ONLY SCHEDULED TOURS so we found out the time that it was so we could get there for the tour. Make sure you know that before going!! My boyfriend and I had a wonderful time there and thought it was well worth the hour drive to go see it! We both took a lot of pictures while there so I’ll post a good amount of the photos on this review, but don’t look at them if you don’t want spoilers!! Great experience, super friendly staff, very knowledgeable staff, fair price, and an overall awesome place for all ages. I’m so glad that we went.

Mike Sanders

Sterling Hill was something a group of friends and I decided to do, not knowing quite what to expect. I assumed it would be mildly interesting, but I can happily say that I was wrong! The tour they run through the mine was super interesting and they have geological marvels on display. I never knew that Jersey had the largest cache of florescent minerals in the world! There was also a very detailed look at mining in the past as well as some of the amazingly dangerous things these men did to earn their daily bread. Our guide, Nicole was super knowledgeable and passionate about the mine, and it was definitely infectious. A great place to visit, if you've never been!

Curtis Kleier

In one word, Awesome! We were prepared to be underwhelmed but they give a great hour long if not longer tour. It takes you through through the mine, the fluorescent minerals and finally into a historical area with various mining and minerals. There is a place to go "mine" for minerals, Do a scavenger hunt for various types of rocks. The tour is long but not strenuous no major climbing and only one staircase which there is an elevator for those who may have an issue. Our 4 yr old son to 60 year old "Geige" had fun. We went early morning and there was one summer camp there but they did a great job of splitting the tours. Yes you can purchase amazing samples for far less but they are still a few hundred for the most beautiful samples. The upsells are worth the effort. If you have older children there is enough for an entire day. If this was an helpful review please give it a

Steve DePoe

Loved it. Great tour and very informative. I can't wait to go again.

Henry Ankner

Very cool

Daniel James Petraitis

great little mine for a day trip to take your family on they have a little gift shop where you can buy rocks and stuff to plus a little area to eat weather permitting in the Summers you can actually go if you have the proper rock hammer and mine your own rocks

Cynthia Voisine

Pretty cool place. The guide was outstanding. The fluorescent minerals were really nice to look at. Great family trip, although I was there with a group of adults and we all had fun.

Gabriel Barrientos

The Sterling Hill Mine brings back memories of when I was a child and going to a field trip and enjoying the rocks that were there it's a great place to go and have fun

Audyn Nieves

We had SUCH an amazing time. My kids are 8 and 9. We started off collecting some samples. Had a snack before the tour and learned so much with our wonderful guide! It was a really great day for all of us. We would definitely recommend it and we will definitely come back.

Carey Anne Bomensatt

Nice place, interesting local facts, will bring my kids back!

abhijit shah

It was good. They offer times tours so check the hours and visit. They have parking. It's a small place and 2 hours should be sufficient for mesuem visit

Rabbi Yosef Cohen

An amazingly fun and educational experience for the whole family. Tour guide was fantastic! Don't wear good shoes, as the mud water at certain spots in the mine will ruin your footwear. Best to wear junky sneakers. Great gift shop too with unique rock/mineral items. There is also an additional rock hunt and panning activities. Highly recommend this place!!!

Kristen Owen

Went on tour with family and another couple. The tour was amazing and well kept. My children especially loved the the hands on and interactive features. Personally loved all of the facts and stories that were shared along the way. I Highly recommend stopping in here if you are in town. Ray was our tour guide and he was fantastic!

Jason Velez

Great time! Definitely a must for all ages!

John Dorval

In my opinion this place is awesome. If you are into mining history, geology or just want to do something new this place is great. Managed very well and the staff is very knowledgeable. Great for kids. The mine tour is awesome! Great museum, keeping the history of mining alive!

R K

Very cool place with knowledgeable staff. Fairly priced for the tour. We plan on going back.

Alan Arnowitz

Interesting tour of a previously operating zinc mine. The end of the tour has some spectacular florescent rocks.

Andrea Alfieri

Interesting mining facility and hands on rock discovery. Great class trip.

Nicholas Schueler

The mine had a lot of interesting history behind it. They had a tour of the old mine and it was very interesting to see how things had run many years ago. They also had an activity where you get to search for certain types of rocks. They had a small gift shop. I went as a counselor for a camp and the kids were always engaged and had a lot of fun.

Jim Brown

Very informative the mine tour was great and we got to take home some rocks.

Helen Morton

Fun and informative tour. Great for all ages.

Jamison Graff

One-of-a-kind natural resource presented with a first rate mineral collection and a unique mineral collection opportunity.

Sneha H S

Specific visit times during the day. Takes 2-3 hours. There's a cafe, a souvenir shop and restrooms inside. No restaurants nearby. The scavenger hunt at the beginning of the tour was fun for both adults and kids. They split the crowd into groups, and our tour guide was not the most entertaining. The visit to the caves and rock displays were highlights of the trip.

Barbara Sahm Benjamin

Great place to tour, but even better place to acquire nice specimen rocks. Love the dig piles and have personally added many times to my personal collection from its stores. Please remember to bring a jacket for the tour; it gets cold in the tunnels.

Elizabeth Romanaux

There is nothing like a cool underground tour on a hot summer's day. We love this and have been several times.

Christina Gonzalez

This was my second time being here, but I was able to enjoy this time around more since it wasn’t a work function with kindergarteners I had to keep an eye on. The staff was really friendly and the mannequins and many old tools make it easy to really understand how that mine operated. Our tour guide Zach was really nice and you could tell he truly enjoys what he does. He’s new so he may need a little more practice, but overall I enjoyed it.

Dakota K Clayville

This was an AWESOME tour and museum! Kid friendly and nice sized gift shop and a cheap place to get something to eat.

James Blackwell

Face it, it's a mine. You can search a pile for fossils and gems, other visitors are a big help., museum is interesting, tour ok if you've never been to a mine, but not a thrill. But go and check it out. Check the site for your times.

Wilmaliz Rivera

Very educational! We loved the tour. To see a part of American history preserved is amazing.

Cybre Oliveira

Wow what can I say!! Amazing time inside the mine! Our tour guide was amazing. She by far was awesome...funny and super knowledgeable (she was in her 20s with a diamond in her nose) forgot her name lol. They bring you into a room where they turn out the lights and put on the blacklight...and WOW you will be blown away!!! Everything glows like the movie Avatar!! Great gift shop..fair prices and just a amazing experience with my family!!!

Alek Dean Maskery

The Blackout Tour is phenomenal! The museum is rich in history and filled with gorgeous crystals. It's a great place to take the whole family.

Ricardo Dacosta

I went there today with my two daughters and a friend with her two daughters. We had a really good time! Carissa, our tour guide, was awesome! Super informative, knowledgeable & well spoken. The gift shop is well stock with a variety of gems, rocks and crystals from all over the world. Great experience!

Emanuel Mercado

Had the best time with my son and the staff and tour guide was great

Jim Vermeychuk

Very well organized museum and tour

Amanda Burnham.

The guide was awesome and full of interesting information. The museum's were full of beautiful specimens. A great pace to visit to learn about the importance of the zinc industry and the perfect geology field trip!

Mikayla DuFour

I was kinda hoping for more examples of the zinc glowing, but there is only so much left in the upper level of a very deep mine so it is what it is I guess. the examples of zinc that DID still remain was very beautiful! the history was neat and the tour showed off a lot. the corn dogs in the snack stand were just microwaved tho 0/5

Brian Joergens

Interesting tour that was fun for the kids. Gift shop is fun too with lots of minerals to collect. Tour guide was fun and informed.

Esther Thurber

Great tour especially on a hot day. The mine temperature stays around 56 degrees. It's a 2-hour tour with educational stops along the way. Wear good walking shoes and bring a jacket if 56 degrees is cold for you.

Arpit Gawande

Nice small museum with many rock types. I was amezed to know that there so many types of rocks. Very good place for Kids to have different experience.

Noelle Leeman

Great little day trip. Wonderful guide and really cool gift shop! We will be back when the weather is nicer so the kids can mine for their own gems and rocks.

Chris D'Achille

Had a great time on the tour with the family. Very informative, and well worth it.

Sharon Kelly

Always a fun outing with or without children. A learning experience with hands-on digging opportunities.

Вячеслав Барсуков

very interesting place, cognitive, fun, very nice

Thomas van Duynhoven

Great place for all ages interested in the mineralogy and geology. The tours are great but the best part for me has to be the dig site. Bring your own hammers and chisels and see what you might find.

orionjr3 myplaylist

The tour was really good. They showed a lot of minerals and black light rocks.

Steve Gyarmati

Lots of fun and learning. They should turn the place in a restaurant also.

adam dick

Fascinating tour of zinc mine. Excellent knowledgeable guide. Extensive museum and glowing rocks !!

Francesco Rando

So many things for kids to see and do I such a small place. Definitely do the mine tour, takes about an hour

Eric Friedland

Great tour given by Tony. The mines and the amount of minerals are amazing. Educational and interesting.

Ed Loz

Good place to learn about mining and how back in a day people were able to mine various metals and stones. I would recommend the tour for kids 6+ and rock discovery for 5+ Lots of information, kind a friendly staff. Please bring worm clothes

John Lin

Just had a tour here. It was awesome! Our tour guide Debbie was great also. Learned a lot here. I will definitely take my family here next time.

Tara Torello

Great fun for family/class/scouting trips. Several hands on activities. Lots of walking. Very educational & fun.

Phyllis Ann

Woowee...go there it is great.

William Biechy

Great tour guide, excellent museums

Lisa Olsen

My husband and I have taken the mine tour 3 times, and we have learned something new each time. It's a lot of fun, especially on a hot day, as the mine is a nice, cool 57 degrees! We highly recommend checking this out!

Dan Goedeke

Good tour. The guide was well versed on the history of the mine She was not only informative, but entertaining too. The tour was well worth the cost. By the way, they do offer a senior discount.

Eric Wunder

Amazing and breathtaking tour of a very old and fascinating mine!

dee Reynolds

Me and my husband won tickets to the mine tour from a raffle. We had never heard of the mine(we live two and a half hours away). But we made the trip up to check it out. I'm very glad we did. We arrived late to the last tour. But the nice lady in the gift shop got us onto the tour. The museum was really cool, lots of beautiful rock and mineral samples and old mining equipment. The mine tour was very interesting with a lot of rooms that glow under u.v. lights. My husband seemed to think the tour is a bit long, but I enjoyed it. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and good with the many kids on the door(I believe she said she was a substitute teacher). There is also a area you can look for fossils and pan for gold and fossils. The gift shop was very reasonable priced.

Richard Cetta

Awesome tour - we drove from the Jersey shore to take it and it was definitely worth the trip!

mary warde

Really interesting and everyone is so knowledgeable.

nathan lottes

Very few places preserve mines. This is one that has done an excellent job.

Adam Zuidema

Great local history, fantastic tour. Kid friendly and affordable.

Ashok Gunasekaran

Good place to visit with kids and family. Nice tour inside the mine to learn historic relevance. Staff were friendly and helpful. Make sure to get a sweatshirt or light sweater before entering the mine since it's usually an hour tour and it does pretty cold inside.

Scarlett S.

Super fun trip! I went here for my Geology class, and it was really cool. There's a lot of different features (the museum, the mine tour, mining area, the scattered artifacts of the mine) and all of them are intriguing, both for the people who know some about geology, and those who don't. Great for kids old enough to walk, and adults. If I was able to, I would've stayed the whole day. (Plus, the whole place is really scenic as well!)

Rita Walker

Very interesting. Great guides

Daniel Flaherty

Nice time with the kids not to expensive

Wendy Glasson

Participated in a ghost investigation here. Fascinating history. Snack bar, store, museum, site dig. The flourescent minerals are amazing. Must take the tour. The mines are crazy...cant imagine anyone working there for years

J. Henry Daggett

Excellent tour for all ages. Easy to get to, friendly staff and a great price for the 2 hour tour. Loads of history and entertainment. Having been on a few mine tours in the past in other parts of the country, I thought it was really neat that this place had stuff in their exhibit from all over the world. Worth the trip!

Odeisa Hichez

Very interesting seeing rock shapes and colors that I never imagined. A lot to see and learn. Go with comfortable clothing and shoes.

Cristina Capocciama LaBarbera

I love this place! I try to come here at least 3 times a year. The kids love the mine, especially the florescent specimens! Every time we visit the gift shop and bring home wonderful additions to our rock collections. A couple times a year they have a handful of vendors set up and sell for a weekend. There are always amazing finds, makes for a great day for the rock hound family!

Gwen R.

What a fantastic outing. Our tour guide was engaging and pleasant. The museum was very interesting and it was fun learning new things. Highly recommend.

sukiru chan

Beautiful place! Me and my class went there for a trip and loved it! Rock hunts, Mining exploring, and everything good!

Kelly Teegan Dayka

Fun tour for two hours- you get to enjoy the mine and see a lot of florescent rock colors underground. The tour guide was knowledgeable and very informative while being fun and entertaining!

scott yarmula

Thoroughly enjoyed my visit to this place

JK McGuinness

WOW the tour was excellent. Very informative and painted a great picture of the mining experience. Highly recommend.

Steve

Family friendly museum based in and around probably the most famous mine in NJ. Been here as a young kid and as an adult, would go back again just for the unique experience.

Susan Ginter

An awesome day trip. The museum was spectacular. Loved the fluorescent stones. The tour was very well done and informative. The guides very knowledgeable. My grandchildren had an awesome time. Not one boring moment.

Dawn Inglis

Great way to spend the afternoon. My daughter 19 and brother loved it, very interesting.

Michael Shevlin

Had a great family outing at the mine today, we were completely impressed by the knowledge of our guide Barry. Great way to escape the summer heat. Plan on visiting again and hope to learn more about the history!!!!

Danielle Breitenbucher

If you get a chance try both their day tour, as it has a lot more information, and their night time black out tour. The florescent rock are amazing to see with the black lights.

Oliver Pope

Amazing. The museum is one of the best things to do in NJ.

Laura Jacobson

Renown mining and mineral museum. People from all over the country come to visit. But still very welcoming friendly staff

Alba Urso

It was a very cool place totally recommend it . Very interesting.

Bruno Godinho

We visited this museum and mine and was really awesome. 2 h tour total

Sandip Ray

I would not give it a five star. The stone exhibits were good but the actual mine tour was disappointing. The mine tour guide was over reacting and extremely boring. Our entire team of 20 visitors were pissed off! Mine does not have any live equipment which is working nor any live demonstration. Century old deserted mine. I felt like the mine tour could have been much more interesting and better with some improved management! Stone exhibits are really worth watching. mine tour starts sharp at 1 pm and lasts for an hour. Free ample parking. in-house cafe was extremely bad, worst pizzas i’ve ever had. It would be almost a day tour so pack you foods with you.

Heather Epstein

The mine tour is amazing. The guides are very well informed and pass on a lot of great information. My 8 year old and I had a blast!

Steven Globe

A very informative Museum that teaches not only about minerals, but also the art of mining. They have lots of old mining equipment and it gives you the sense that the operation could start up again tomorrow.

Nagzzfan 21

I found this place rather impressive! With so many expensive ores and minerals in one place, I didn't want to leave.

Stephanie Kirby Anderson

What a great place!! Nicole gave an awesome tour - was super kind and patient with my kids (3 and 4 years old) she was funny and asked them questions to keep them engage. And her dad worked there when it was a working mine! It says it right on their website to wear closed toe shoes- the mines are muddy and wet. And anything under ground could have a smell. The review below complaining about this is absurd. The pricing was appropriate and the gift shop has some wonderful books. Rock discovery was a steal- it was $4 for the kids to walk around and pick out one of each kind of six different rocks. It really forced the kids to focus and observe. If you are going with you get kids- I carried one kiddo in a baby carrier. This made the walk easier and my little was is a little fearful of the dark so she felt safe this way. Otherwise I fear we might not have been able to walk the mines. We also go there before 10 to do the 10 am guided tour through the museum, the mine and then the rock discovery at 12. I haven’t stoped talking about this place since we were there. We will go again soon.
