REVIEWS OF Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument IN Montana

This was a little stop on our road trip. The museum has some wonderful displays. Lots of information on the battle. It was nice to see that the Native American view point was somewhat included. I feel that the timeline represented on the wall should be removed and replaced with one that has additional Native American points (preferably without the printed tape additions). The grounds of the park are beautiful and the memorial stone is cared for. The addition of the Native American memorial was nicely done. There is also a National Cemetery on the grounds as well. Very somber but well kept.

Mike Privette

This is a must do for any American! Very sobering....placards give you a narration via your phone as you wind through the battlefield. Absolutely beautiful scenery. You can imagine what it must have been like. There is a nice museum to tour with very interesting artifacts.

Karen Tesch

It was a beautiful place with haunting history. We listened to the Park- sponsored lecture and the gentleman who gave it (230 pm Saturday) was like a professional storyteller! He was amazing! Great presentation to listen to before going on the Battlefield. This was so worthwhile to spend the time here!

Ann Wright

It was an educational experience for our family. It was also sad to see the amount of lives lost during this battle. We walked through the Veteran's cemetary, gift shop and Information center and drove through the battlefields. Placards are placed along the drive and give information about the battle.

Erlinda Demeterio

The Park Ranger narrated an updated historical account of this battlefield. Do enjoy the interactive presentation!

Deb Wilson

Very cool place. Interesting information. Definitely worth a visit.

Coley King

Absolutely worth the trip. One can almost "see" what occurred here. It is well kept grounds of the history. Take the time to do the walks if able, you get a much larger feeling of what happened.

Rosilee Garcia

Custers last stand. It was nice with a small museum. Interesting.

Dave York

Knowledgeable Park Ranger with a great way to tell the story. Solemn place. Please be respectful. Not pets. Audio guided tour if you like. They also give a bus tour. Free if you self guide. Bucket list item for me.

Russell Owen

One of my favorite stops on our trip. Historic site of one of the most famous battles in our history; great presentations. The battlefield talk is the best; professor is terrific.

Jason Boardman

It has a very interesting story and the tour guides help bring it to life showing where everything happened during the battle

Erin Nichols

Great self guided walks, monuments, cemetery, and restrooms available as well. Seeing the landscape and reading the markers help to immerse yourself in the battle and understand it more. There is also a film and talk available. Notice the coins and stones left on headstones and read what the tradition is all about before going.

Tia Faulk

There's lots to look at, and so much history...it was neat to see the grave markers showing where some of the soldiers and civilians died during the battle. I personally liked to see the horses on the side of the road.

Robert Sean Yates

Awesome place. Ranger talk was very informative. Battle didn't happen like Hollywood depicts. Recent archeological research and evidence has changed the narrative somewhat. But Custer still stood his ground til the end.

David Brunmeier

The history presentation was so different then school. Great visit. The tombstone battlefield markers were fascinating drive the tour road!

Shannon Arnold

Awesome place very educating an very emotional after you here the story the place is worth the visit

Anita Paulson

Took my breath away! Lots of history and always an opportunity to learn something new! Definitely go if you have a chance. Family of 6 and it took us 3 hrs, walked some drove some of it and did the museum. Worth the time

Patricia Strub

There was a great history presentation. Then we visited various sites on the grounds by car.

John T.L Hulstine

I went here while I was writing a research paper about the battle and found it very helpful in my studies. At the time there was a park ranger who gave a presentation on how the battle played out and it was very entertaining. The ranger was very knowledgeable on the subject and would make a comedic comment every now and then. It is one thing to read about a battle field and quite another to go there and see the terrain. It is also enlightening to immerse oneself into a dark period of American history, had Custer somehow won that day he likely would have slaughtered a great many women and children like he had at the Washita river.

Don Chase

Fascinating. Attended a talk, the drive and did some walks. Prepare to spend some time there. It's all so interesting. Plan to spend at least 4-5 hours there and get out and walk.

Steve Borgmeyer

Enjoyed Ranger talk re the layout of battlefield area and the history of events leading up to the battle. This made visit much more interesting.

Michelle Everson

If you do not know about this place, read up on it. This is an important part of U.S. History. I don't know why more schools don't teach children about the battle of Little Big Horn or "Custer's Last Stand" as it used to be known.

megan ailey

If you love history you need to visit this place. It is haunting and somber experience with beautiful landscapes.

Sylvia Y Durant

Awe inspiring. If you ever get a chance to go you see it. Spectacular!!!

Steve Foskin

A powerful and moving experience at another impeccably managed National Monument. Makes the historic victory of the Plains Indian Nations over the US Army's 7th Cavalry at Little Big Horn come alive. As expected the narrative is far to sympathetic to United States and Westward Expansion coming at the expense of North America's indigenous people and this reviewer sees it as the narcissistic Custer getting what he had coming to him. But of course in typical fashion a disproportionate response by the same US Army slaughtering defensless women, children, and old people at Wounded Knee shortly thereafter. If you want a far more balanced perspective I'd suggest following up with a visit to the private Custer Battlefield Museum just outside the monument.

Bart Hansen

We ended up getting to the park a little late in the day so we got in for free so we looked at everything we wanted to see we learned quite a lot about how and why the battle happened, basically Custard’s arrogance got him and his men killed it was really kinda sad. Well worth the time to see everything

Rick Kloock Sr

Interesting historical site. A lot bigger area than I imagined from reading the history books.

Kaweka Stoney

I found this place to very interesting in that it showcased a very dark part of American history with pints of view from both sides of the conflict. It is hard to imagine a very beautiful area had so much death. The white and red markers of the cavalry Soldiers and Indian warriors bring a solemn awareness of battle that was waged so many years ago.

Suzanne Funesti

We visited on a cold, rainy day, but the Visitor Center, with an excellent video presentation & informative, interesting & well balanced exhibits made it well worth the time. There are gravestones placed across the battlefield where soldiers and Indians fell - presenting an especially moving scene. You can drive around the battlefield which helps one picture the action. A National Cemetery is also located near the Visitor Center which is also very moving. This is a must-go to help understand US history.

TIM Heck

Incredible history! Incredible place! I've been here numerous times, but enjoy it immensely each time I return. Took the bus tour, twice. Love the history center, displays, and book store. Indescribable love for this place.

Mandy Shepard

I had no idea what to expect of this as we were just driving by and made a quick decision to stop. I'm so glad we did! Very educational! I didn't know this was also a National Cemetery as well. A well kept Monument worth the stop.

Shelley Perry

Walking tour was great, very informative. Seeing the marble markers scattered across the hillside when the soldiers and Indians fell painted such a vivid picture of how this battle came to be. The driving part of the battlefield area was very informative. Rangers on duty and the museum show both sides to this story. The monument to the Indians who fought was exceptionally beautiful and poignant in describing their defense of their way of life. Such an important part of our history. Dont miss this historic battlefield

Gary Simmons

Interesting place and the history and artifacts are great. Schools should teach more history like this.

Anne Simmons

Very interesting with lots of history. Great hiking trails throughout the battle flield and auto road as you learn. Very informative. Beautiful but sombering cemetery.

Julie Phillips

Much more than we expected. Drove the entire loop, reading all the signs, and amazed at the huge size and terrain of the battle field, surprised to find many beautiful horses roaming there. Tombstones everywhere, a horses graveyard, a mass burial tombstone, and a military cemetery used for military burials. We had a personal presentation by one of the employees, the museum and gift shops were interesting. And our senior lifetime national park pass got us in free. We definitely recommend it!

Priscilla Leonard

What a great experience to come here. I am so glad that we made the journey up here. Such a beautiful place to see and learn so much.

Shaunn Munn

My family visited on a cool summer day, early in the morning. We love history, and had the place to ourselves. As we visited the sights we tried to put ourselves in the footsteps of the participants. Not the big wigs, but First People women, children, boys too young to be warriors, old and worn out men. Being startled by the bugles, gathering loved ones, remembering Washita, watching the men racing to battle. Then we thought about the lowly soldiers. What did they think of Custer? Were they apprehensive? Cocky? What were their thoughts as they began to realize they were doomed? The cool breeze rustled grasses as we tried to picture how it was. We did not want to see the exhibits, and tried to ignore the markers, imagining how the events unfolded. No photos. It seemed a sacrilege to pose on hallowed ground. All consigned to memory, hoping to return. Only after we saw more people arrive did we take in the exhibits. Was very glad we did. Please try a visit this way. Be sure to have a good map & read up well before coming. We think you'll be enlightened and appreciative.

Kat Dok

A lovely park. Very interesting and informative visitor center. Worth a visit if you are in the area.

Kirk Taylor

Amazing and awe inspiring place. The layout of grave markers where each individual fell is a mesmerising way of showing the heat of final battle.

W. S.

I have wanted to visit this battlefield all my life and finally got the opportunity to do so. It is set up so that you can use your cell phone to call a number and learn about points of interest at different locations throughout the battlefield. There are pathways you can follow to various points of interest. You will need to take your car the four miles or so to Reno Hill where the battle concluded, but there are numerous stops along the way where you can access more information via your phone. My visit was well worth the wait.

Garnet E Cook Jr

We were there a few years ago and are going back this September. This is a very interesting and historical site . The Park Rangers are well versed about the battle from both sides of the story . Well worth stopping .

Pete Morgan

A truly haunting and spectacular historic site to visit. You just do not realise how big the site is until you actually visit it. The visitor centre is quite large and very well stocked with historic artefacts and information panels. There is also a very full gift store. The restrooms in the car park are very clean and smart. I would highly recommend the talks that take place outside. The one we listened to was around 45 minutes and very interesting and informative. The way that the to stones are positioned in the fenced off area gives you a much better idea how just how chaotic the battle must have been due to them being erected in the place that they originally found the bodies. This place is a must see for anyone with any interest in American history.

Dan Wilding

This was well worth the stop. Parking is easy. There is a wonderfully informative visitors center / historical center. The views of Little Bighorn are wonderful. You'll find easy walking paths to tour the formal and informal grave markers. I found this stop exceptionally interesting. From the top of the hill you can see for miles in all directions.

Vanya Karouna

This place is beautiful. We took a hike along the trail. I felt like I was walking through time. I wish we had more time to really see the place. It was our last stop before heading home.

Neal Matzkin

Add a star if you are a US history /military and or American Indian history enthusiast. Subtract 1or 2 if you don't care. If you are into this stuff can easily stay an entire day. Small ranger building. Monuments, see the Indian one, grassy balltefiled. Saw a decent film. Are also ranger talks, Crow led tours, 5 mile paved road with signage and many walking trails. A lot has been in investigated so there is a lot to see if you care. Was 40 min away, was worth the detour but not a special trip unless you add a star or 2.

Scwagen G

Nice. Clean. Large open area with great views. Smooth roads, little narrow to the next site but free range horses were fun to take pictures of.

Gene Thompson

It is difficult to adequately express in words the feel of this monument. It is truly a place that needs to be visited to grasp the history and people involved in this famous/ infamous battle between the U.S. Cavalry and the combined members of several Native American tribes. The cemetery with the row upon row of headstones is sobering as is the scattered headstones on the battlefield marking where various soldiers fell. Many are unknown. The markers showing where tribal leaders sat observing to battle and signage on the vehicle tour showing the sequence of events and where various groups were during the battle is invaluable in getting a better picture of what took place here.

Dawn Meade Geppert

This national park service attraction was right off the interstate and had good access for large vehicles. Lots of parking and a very interesting and informative visitor center. Park rangers are on hand and imparting their knowledge of the property, the national cemetery, and of course, all of the events leading up to Custer's last stand. This was a great app!

L. Patrick Gray

Beautiful place. Good 360° view. The visitor center and gift shop also house many nice museum pieces, displays inside. I enjoyed watching the documentary about the details of Custers last stand. I really liked the Indian history and displays of authentic handmade clothes they wore during the time of battle.ts worth the $25.00 park entrance fee

Sue Ballew

We took the guided bus tour and loved it! Our guide was very pleasant and knowledgeable. Would definitely recommend it!

Grant Corley

We visit the site after an antelope hunt and found it very interesting. I took some great pictures on the site easy to see why it's called the Big Sky country.

Debbie Riley

Anybody that is a history or just wants to see a place that you've read about or heard about in history books or school, this is a place that makes history come to life. A somber place, indeed but we must never forget the lives lost on ALL sides, American, Indian, foreign born, civilian and women and children. May this never happen again in our lifetime.

Andrew Nash

This place is excellent. There is so much information that it's difficult to absorb enough in a day. It's apparent that in recent decades there has been great efforts to balance the narrative with both sides sides of the battle. I really appreciated the respectful atmosphere. It was very dignified and informative. The perspectives of both sides were explained and the warriors and soldiers who fought and died were honored.

Jeff Buel

See what our heritage was. Lots of walking with lots to see. Has a short movie and a park Ranger giving a narrative of how it was during the battle. Then off to see the headstones. After that you can drive into the park further and see more placecards. At the end of the road another walk with other sights what was going on during the battle. Give yourself @ 4-5 hours to check it all out. Maybe bring a lunch too.

John Adkins

Awesome place. Good too see a crowd at such a monument. This was my third time their and I continue to learn something each time. I've been to many battle fields and one can only visualize the events that took place. The bravery of the men on both sides. I will be back again.

Denise Zbozny

Spectacular views of this historic area. I had chills it was so moving. Took my 2 dogs with me and they stayed in the car as per the instructions. We did the auto tour using the CD I bought at the Visitor Center. We got there right after opening at 8am so it wasn't too hot yet. Best of all, used my America the Beautiful pass and was able to enter without paying a fee. If you are a history buff, put this at the top of your Must See list. Enjoy!

schjoeke S.

A place that completely silenced me... First time visitors from Belgium and though my expectations were set pretty high in advance, never thought it would leave me with such a deep impression! Firstly by seeing the vast and huge landscape : nature there is one well camouflaged hiding place as though you may 'think' you can see far - which in a way is true - you wouldn't notice a sniper laying down in the grass 10 yards away from you! So that alone made me think of how it must've been like during the battle. Secondly, the museum (visitors center) is so interesting and has a very good collection of original items. What completely surprised me was reading that a certain Musket was made in Belgium!! Never knew this... ☹️ Belgium, a tiny wee country obviously having had its hand in many negative, historical happenings. Shameful. And so is the fact of the American politics at the time...slaughtering Indians to near extinction for a handful of gold and land. Custer had it coming!

Viola Wilson

This park was so much more than I expected. It was a history lesson that came to life and I will never forget. I hope the park will expand it's lecture room or provide a microphone so that more visitors can hear the rangers talk about the history. The markers in the battlefield really brought the event to life along with the beautiful Indian memorial.

Gianna Barrow

The video presentation is informative and compelling. So much to see and there are great paths to take to grave sites in the distance. Wear appropriate footwear! Moving experience. National Cemetery, too.

Peggy Fletcher

All I can say is wow. The tour guide and driver were awesome. It is always sad to hear about history when there is loss of life. This is a stop one should stop at. Be prepared to spend a couple of hours here. The rangers were great with the kids in our group. Very educational.

Casey Fletcher

Very cool experience for those that love history. A bit pricey at $25 per car. All the parks are too pricey.

Jim Carr

Obviously a national park that is well worth the visit. The phone guided tour is awesome. Make sure you get there for the park ranger Battle talk.

ShirlzDaGirl

Take the tour given by the Sioux Tribe members, the tour was a highlight of the visit. We learned so much more information, especially about the Native American viewpoints.

Denise Craigen

This is our history and you must learn it. We have to learn from the tragic things of our past. They do a great job of presenting both sides here. Watch the movie and attend a ranger talk and get a deeper story than what you can absorb from reading all the displays and signs.

Jc Kretchmer

Spectacular and amazing hospitality- the park rangers and tour guides are just icing on the wild flowers and scenery.

Ferris Hancock

This place is amazing! It is the embodiment of two completely different lifestyles collided and the result of that collision. One side just wanted to live free. It is a beautiful place.

Kelly crowe

Great place to learn. The staff are excellent at explaining the history of the battle.

Robert Jones

I have never been to a place quite so eerie as the Bighorn monument. Over 100 years later, this place feels haunted. The strange emotional pull is quite something and the small tombstones to honor the native Americans who died here are twice as touching as any monument to those that served Custer's egotistical campaign. Regardless, I came to mourn all the men who fought for what they believed in, or what they were led to believe in. I don't recall every being moved to tears so quickly for something I had no part in. It's an incredible memorial and everyone should visit it to learn the painful lessons of narcissistic leadership. I can't recommend it highly enough. A must stop.

Marisa DiGiallonardo

Always a place of learning and reflection. My family and I consider this a very sacred place too.

Jeanne Griffin

Very interesting. Staff was very informative. Learned so much about the battle.

Sheena Bavone

The driven tour is gorgeous. You get to see the battlefield but also have unparalleled views

Deborah Patrick

I love history so I always am glad to have the opportunity to see sites from American history. Although seeing battlefields and viewing where the carnage took place is very sad, it helps me to get a better understanding of what actually happened rather than just by reading a book. I saw the strategy of the battle, the positions of the warriors and where General Custer took his last stand. There are many myths about what happened but these mysteries are being solved by finding and analyzing artifacts. This peaked my interest and I plan to do more research on this subject.

Patti B Johnson

This place was so interesting! The history there is palpable and the Rangers and staff have so much knowledge about the peoples and events, it's like you were watching the battle.

High Desert

Absolutely worth seeing in person. Way different than reading about it. Driving tour was good, visitor center was interesting. Probably need at least 2 hours or more to experience it

Nicole Bennett

Amazing views. Great history. $25 admission is a bit steep and the drive in is less than pleasant.

Mark Hopkins

I showed up just in time for a talk by a ranger, it was very informative and I would suggest it to all who have an interest in the battle. There are informative placards along the road and a really nice phone app for points of interest so you can "self guide" I also achieved something that Custer could not; I have been to the Little Bighorn twice!

Kasey Raia

What a neat stop on a road trip. We really enjoyed walking around inside and outside, reading the history and seeing such a powerful location in history. The way it is laid out is really neat, making it easy to visualize exactly where and how the battle went down.

Mandy

So much history, beautiful memorials, and lots of things to do. Plan a whole day to see it all.

Catherine Hufnagle

Very nice enjoyed the walk up to last stand hill. Museum was. Nice lots of info

Barry Hill

My favorite part is the National Cemetery. The battleground is also interesting. The displays in the visitor center are excellent and honor both fallen soldiers and native americans.

C. T. Gauthier

Interesting place altho not much to see. Rangers make it worthwhile.

Zach Morris

Small and off the beaten path this is a great place to look back at mistakes and glories of the American Battlefields.

John Saenz

The battlefield is well marked and the self guided tour provides a lot of great information about a complicated and mysterious battle. Take time to read the information and drive along the battle field tour. It is an amazingly emotional place. Both the Calvary and Indian Warriors are memorialized very well. It is well worth a few hours of time.

Mark Middleton

There is so much to learn about Little Bighorn that my review won't do it justice. Well worth a visit. Easy to get to...right off of the interstate. Plenty of parking. Visitor center, battlefield, monuments, staff presentations, photos etc. Excellent vacation stop.

Vanessa Miller

Historical places speak for themselves. I really enjoyed the museum too.

Kathleen Levine

Great museum. Sad location but good educational experience.

Rick Hollebeke

Great place with lots of history. The Rangers were well informed and knew the history of the battle. Easily spent a few hours here.

BLT Clark

We made a special trip to come here since it's off the beaten path. It was more interesting that I expected. The weather was not great that day and we appreciated the drive through tour with cell phone narration paired with the information on the map.

Brent Knobel

We stop by not expecting to learn as much as we did about the success and failures that cause the out come of this event. I would recomend doing the bus tour to learn about the park. We got a lot of insight about the events and a good picture painted about what happened here.

Vanda Arcand

This is a great educational experience for young and old alike. Lots of trails so wear good footwear. Rangers are very knowledgable and willing to answer any and all questions you might have.

Sean Thurston

Interesting to see where the battle took place. Gravestones mark where General Custer and his soldiers fell.

Tim Butler

Very informative. A very interesting memorial at the site of Custer's last stand. The details of movements, strategies, and mistakes of the various companies of the 7th CA. More than 250 white stone pillars mark the site where every fallen soldier was found. There is also a military cemetery on site. Highly recommended for every American, especially anyone interested in military strategies.

Sabra Gerdes

A well preserved peice of history! Great place to get out and walk and see the beautiful historical site. Lots to see!

valerie v.

National cemetery on grounds which is cool. Presentations by national park ranger is good. Don't miss the movie, it is very informative. Walk the grounds, they have placed headstones where fallen soldiers and indians were. Newer to grounds is the exhibit honoring American Indian chiefs, it is a must see. Good couple of hours here in the beautiful rolling hills of Montana.

Roberta Russell

Sad, but an amazing part of American history. As a person with a small amount of Native blood, it was very sad from both sides. Just imagining the battle on that landscape of absolutely NO cover was horrible. The history part was very interesting, and I was glad to see the historical aspects from both sides

John Cooley

Great visit. Must see. Packed with history. Don't miss.

Pamela Stemmerman

Loved it. Narrative by the park ranger was very nice and informative.

Linda Merck

Very nice place. We were pulling a camper so we really couldn't stop at the pulloffs. But other than that good.

Anna Stevenson

An amazing historical site! A great visitor's center and well marked trails to all the important points, as well as an 5 mile interpretive drive with audio from a free app. You can almost hear the war cries, bugles, gunshots, and arrows whizzing thru the air... this is a must see for anyone interested in America's past history... the good and the bad.

Colin Nelson

Everyone knows the story of Custers last stand, but NEVER did I think it would be such a honor to visit the battlefield and learn the details of this tragic place. Visit the museum and watch the 15 minute video. It is totally worth it.

Leo Orenstein

Most informative national park. You don't know, or appreciate, anything about Custer until you visit here. WOW!

Beverly pickett

I took the drive-on-my-own your. Read the markers and viewed the area. Nice your. Enjoyed the place very much.

Leighann Breeze

Looked nice - we were told to stop by here while moving across the country because we already had a national park pass and the views and history are amazing, but once we got into the parking lot we saw signs that dogs are not even allowed outside of cars. So we moved on. I'm sure if I had been able to explore more I'd have left a better review.

Thom Estaff

Would have liked to spent more time to see video presentation and to hear entire historic presentation.

VK GMAIL

A sobering yet beautiful presentation of a significant slice of Western history. A 5-mile drive from the entrance/visitor center/Last Stand Hill along the Little Bighorn river to the Reno battlefield is highly recommended. Appreciation of the site is greatly enhanced by viewing readily available documentaries of Custer and the battle before visiting.

Dennis Dugan

Great for the history buff. Good inside to trooper & Indian culture

JM Rowe

Went on a wet and windy day but still cool.

Derek Smith

Sobering, informative, and a real piece of history. The depictions, orations, and artifacts inside the visitor center help recreate the scene of the battle. Then, stepping outside and walking up that desperate Hill peppered with graves, one can fully imagine Custer's last stand. From that vantage point, the breathtaking vista is laid out before you and it becomes easy to see why the Plains Indians fought to defend that land and way of life.

Mona Bond

History at it's best. Great place to take family. Highly recommend the visit

Dirk Koenig

The Apsolooke led tour was well worth the time. Really gave a good perspective of the events of the day.

Nick Ligon

Very important landmark in our history. The park is very beautifully laid out. Truly makes you think about what we have done in our past and how maybe we haven't really learned that much as a nation when you look at how things are today. The only odd thing was the crazy amount of bugs that did not stop attacking once I got out of the car. These little creates hopped all about on the sidewalks and others kept ferociously swarming.

Tod Cowper

I very much enjoyed my day. The Battle talk by the Park Ranger is a must, very informative! Very well done!

Shawn Ta'

We learned so much listening to the tour guide. This is a great stop on a road trip.

Adam Swallie

A sombering and surreal place to visit. I stood here as the hot summer breeze quietly swayed the prairie grass and felt a moment of awe that such a quiet and peaceful place could have played host to such an intense battle. Plenty of artifacts in the visitor center and a surprising expanse of battlefield to see.

Judy Shirk

A great inspiration in the history of our Nation and the chance to walk on these "holy grounds"! The Park Ranger told the story of how the " last stand" came to be! Very easy to visualize the battle & its ultimate results! RIP !

Wayne Peck

Very historic location. Staff give a balanced story of the battle that occurred here, including the politics and peoples of the time. The visit gave substance to the well known (but possibly inaccurate) history we all think we know. A good educational experience in a beautiful location outlining a tragic and meaningful part of our US history.

Robert Bogan

Leeland gave a great presentation about the history of Little Bighorn. Definitely worth a visit. If it's summer, be prepared for the heat. ;-)

William Bracken

Great sight and a place to reflect about the decisions and mistakes that were made here. War is so wasteful and counterproductive. Glad to see the Indian's side of the story is being represented now. Take the tour bus. Very educational in entertaining. Worth the price.
