An amazing museum featuring the work of Walter Anderson, whose art was expressed in media ranging from watercolor, block prints, pottery to murals and wood sculpture. Presently, an excellent exhibit of creations from Shearwater Pottery shows the creative links among members of the Anderson family.

Loved the location of the museum and the place itself. The inside is clean and well-maintained. Front desk workers were so sweet and helpful. I’d recommend watching the video first before exploring the museum. It was pretty small; I wish there was more to see! My favorite parts were Walter’s room they have preserved from his cabin as well as the community center mural. Walter was a fascinating man- just as interesting as his artwork and hopefully an inspiration for those with mental illness. Be aware that just down the road, you can go to Peter Anderson’s pottery shop Shearwater! I’d also recommend picking up Agnes Anderson’s book Approaching the Magic Hour. For those wanting to learn more about his illness and life, this provides a shocking but beautiful picture from his wife, who suffered much for the sake of Walter’s art.

I use to work in the showroom at the pottery many years ago and it would be quiet & slow on occasion. On those days I would go to Walter’s house and do my homework in the painted room and marvel at the gorgeous artwork that surrounded me. The sunset lighting would bring out all these different colors in that painted room; it was truly mesmerizing. I love that this room is part of this magnificent museum.

Nancy Naujoks

Amazing artist with a timeless style . Would have given 6 stars but many of his works weren't on display on a recent visit, family pottery instead. But the community center is breathtaking, so a stop at this museum is a must.

This place is beautiful and always a pleasure to visit!! We all enjoyed it every time we come!! We do recommend everyone come by and take a tour!!

Daily Regimen

It’s a museum with the sherif from dukes of hazard and a lot of paintings of crabs the community center is worth the money that and his way to ahead of its time painting for the courthouse in Jackson. He was ill but he tried and he treated his kids and and family as best he could he could paint the reflections of light on water he could reduce a moment toe a fractured explosion of shapes that were song and light- seriously its worth the ten bucks or forty the take the kids

Chris Farrell

Really beautiful work in an inviting, simple setting. Staff is friendly and knowledgeable, not just about the work of Anderson and his talented family, but also a out Ocean Springs and the region.

Kristopher Williams

Great museum for a fascinating artist. Make sure to check out the short film about Anderson, it provides some insight into his work. This place is definitely a hidden gem

Lauren Oliff

This is a wonderful museum but was disappointed this visit. The pottery was being featured and most of Walter's work was not on display.

Dustin Lafont

Went to a craft beer tasting here, very cool environment.

Frank Alexander

What an amazing find. The museum offers a rare glimpse into a creative mind. It is open and inviting, well kept and enjoyable. The museum focuses on Walter Anderson but also features a few other local artists of note as well as Shearwater pottery. We went with our toddler who was well behaved enough that we didn't have to yell 'Don't touch that every 10 seconds' but that was on a good day, otherwise I think it is appropriate for ages 5+ if they appreciate the murals and art.

(Translated by Google) As far as I can tell, Walter Anderson lived in the place where I am now a museum. In ancient times they noticed that the earth was clay. Mississippi is a state rich in clay. Using Walter Anderson and his family clay land, they made roughly pottery but they did preliminary work of artistic visuality. Something that can be used as an ornament in addition to being used in everyday life.

Own a condo in Gulfport and been coming here for years, but just paid my first visit to this museum. It is a very well done museum, and I regret that it took me so long to visit. I will definitely be back. The approximately 30 minute video at the beginning is a must, as it will set the stage for what you are about to see in the museum. Walter was a very interesting man, with many issues, and the video does a great job of helping you understand what he was all about. And the gift shop is very nice, with some interesting mementos, and beautiful pieces for sale from local artists.

Angela Ellison

Great experience & very personable service.

Kathleen Buck

Awesome museum with friendly staff

Sterling Arthur

Anderson's slapdash creative process belies his phenomenal talent. The museum, which has expanded its collection is recent years, showcases Anderson's work, his life, his vision for humanity and the future of art. The two mural rooms, one of which became Anderson's private studio, offer an unforgettable experience.

Undine Jost

Amazing art about the MS Gulf coast! A peaceful and refreshing interlude.

Charlotte Faulkner

Inspiring!! If you ever have the opportunity to visit, by all means, do. The staff is very knowledgable and friendly. Couldn't be nicer! I visit every chance I get and am in awe each time. Thank you WAMA!

April Sojourner

Gabe Muller

The WAMA is an absolutely beautiful place to visit. The history and art of Walter and his brothers are truly pieces of pure imagination and beauty. Make sure to check out the actual boat Walter Anderson used to sail out to the islands!

Benjamin Uchitelle-Pierce

A wonderful experience. Totally worth taking a detour if you are in the area.

James Schaeffer

Just beautiful and unique, especially the room from his island cabin that is reconstructed completely in the museum.

I had the privilege of going with my art class, and it was the best experience of my life. Not only the art was amazing but the stories behind them. Our tore guide was also amazing, and I loved that he was so into the art even though he’s seen it all before. Thanks for the great experience.

I recommend visiting this gem of a local artist! A lot of history in one place. Recommend watching the biography movie to learn more of the man behind the art. Also take a glimpse into his inspiration. It is a small exhibit so simple stop in to see it all. It is a little hard to spot from the road. If you see the painted van you are in the right spot and parking is available in the lot.

Curtis Everitt

My wife and I really enjoyed traveling to this location and taking a look at the exhibit that was on display. They must have known that we were coming because we have a great love for cats and that's what a lot of the paintings and drawings were. Really great selection and just generally beautiful building. Good atmosphere

Jack DeFraites

Kate Downs

Kathy Burke

Amanda

Wonderful place to visit I learned so much about Walter Anderson that I didn't know or didn't learn from college art.

Erin McCausey

If I only had one thing to say to any art museum afficiando, do not miss this town. You will have robbed yourself. Do not miss this museum. It is above any expectections and filled with wonder. Ask to see Wama Mama and say Erin McCausey sent you.

Frank Broz

Know Walters Anderson's son Bill he walked us through the museum and told us stories along the way it was a great experience. He was a very interesting fellow a talented beyond belief.

Amanda Watts

Fantastic experience, everyone visiting the area should go to it. I immediately purchased his wife's biography of him when I got home.

Beti Dugard

I have visited the Museum over the years, and I am never disappointed. I even visited it back before the house he painted in was attached to the museum in Ocean Springs. Most of Walter Anderson's work is amazing. I never tire of looking at it. I even have a few prints in my home. What an interesting person he was, and a wonderful artist. You'll never regret the time spent at this Museum.

Me and my husband went on a day vacation to Ocean Springs. A friend told me about this museum and its history. When we got there they told us the video was down but we could join the tour guide Bill and that he knew everything about the museum. He really did! A must when in Ocean Springs. Walter Anderson was not just a brilliant artist and native son, he also gave so much to the community he lived in and loved. Lots to see on the museum side including original paintings, drawings, lots of ceramics, and some cool things like Walter's bicycle, boat and his beat up hat. In the Ocean Springs Community Center that's attached, you can view an incredible mural, in its entirety, that Walter painted for the city. Be sure to watch the 28 minute documentary on his life, very interesting.

Brandi Disney-Kantner

An excellent display of an artist life work. A must see for anyone traveling the Mississippi gulf coast

Lisa Cantrell

Im my very humble but serious opinion anyone within an hour's drive of Ocean Springs MS should visit the Walter Anderson Museum (and go to Shearwater Pottery as well) . Anderson was one of those people who despite what assuredly was a mental illness seemed to have endless artistic talent. He was creative and talented in all different mediums but excelled in watercolors. The museum has changing exhibits but the community center he painted with murals is always there as are his "room" and several other permanent displays. The film offered is a must see to understand what this man did and what it was like for his family as well.

Anthony Albrecht

Always a pleasure to visit.

I had not heard of Walter Anderson but was very impressed by this museum which represents him, his life, and his work. Do not miss this gem. His art is very well presented and his skills exceptional. My visit was enhanced by meeting the artist's eldest son who very well represents the beautiful city of Ocean Springs.

Eric Ladner

Interesting walk down local history. The art on display (including a whole painted room) is beautiful. There are guest artists that change on a regular basis so there is always something new to see.
