Amazing. This piece of history was brought up from the river in three pieces. We are now in a tech age. When you can actually see what these men are out of and the way they groomed it is just unreal to us in this day and age.
Excellent Museum with the actual ship
The history and reconstruction of this remarkable ship are impressive. The setting is wonderful as it is surrounded by one of the most important battlefields of the Civil War. The museum offers a look at how the ship was excavated and …
Assumed there was just going to be an exhibit about the USS Cairo. NOPE. Not only can you see the USS Cairo in all its glory (looking like some steampunk sci-fi/western military vehicle), you can actually walk through part of the boat! Was driving through and thought I'd check it out, so glad I did. The staff at the museum are very knowledgeable and gave great suggestions for things to see in the area.
Nice museum in the park. My first time to tour it. I have been to the park many times. Plan on going back.
Must see. So much history and the ship is incredible.
I had wanted to visit this place for over 25 years and it was fantastic!
Amazing. This piece of history was brought up from the river in three pieces. We are now in a tech age. When you can actually see what these men are out of and the way they groomed it is just unreal to us in this day and age.
Amazing story and artifacts of Civil War ironclad. Very well done.
Small but very informative. Seeing the ship and being able to explore the inside of it was awesome.
My family and I, really enjoyed visiting The Vicksburg Military park yesterday. Loved the USS Cairo and the Museum, True History isn't taught in public schools anymore so I took the time to explain to my grandchildren the true meaning of the civil-war, not the show flake version.
A lot of history, u learn alot about how gun ships played a big part and how they were made.Definately 5 star
Amazing piece of history!! Being able to walk out on the boat gives you such a connection with what it must have been like in it's day. Don't miss this if you're in the area.
Learned a lot about the civil war and the battle of Vicksburg
Relics of a civil war ironside ship. Great to preserve history of old engineering.
A lot of information about the structure and uses of the Cairo is here. Very interesting about things l didn't know about the vessel of this type are here and have a visual to see for your self. Must see if your in the area.
We enjoyed the museum very much The Visitor Center also and the tour however the gentleman at the gate who took our money was rude and refused to explain to us the whole situation I can't say enough nice things about the visitor center people but the gentleman at the gate was rude since that was the first impression we got of the whole experience I would suggest that you do something about that
So interesting and amazed at the size of the reconstructed ship. A glimpse into the Navy's past. The artifacts from their daily life was very well preserved and documented. A must see in Vicksburg!
Visited for the first time 20 yrs. Ago. This time a new canopy protects it. Lots of information about the ironclad and it's preservation.
Impressive!! Visited as part of the Vicksburg battlefields & was just as impressive. A lot of work went into recreating & preserving this piece of history. A must see!!
It is amazing to see the construction of this ship.
This is a nice stop to make on a history trip.
I was very awesome. You get to walk around inside the ship, what's left of it anyway. They were unable to recover all of the ship but were still able to recreate what the ship looked like thru peices of the original ship and new structures as well. I would highly recommend seeing it. The museum/shop was great and is full of artifacts from within the ships quarters.
Must see destination in Vicksburg. Such a cool piece of history. A rare glimpse of an old Ironsides battle ship from Civil War era.we wish we spent some more time around the exhibit but we were on s tight schedule. The rest of the park was also greatness. Let your imagination go wild here as history will come alive!
Seeing first USS' live is impressive. Have a good museum too. Washrooms and airconditioning is right what you need.
Being a navy vet, thought this was cool
What an incredible piece of history on display. The museum and the battlefield were a great way to spend the day.
Really awesome close up experience !
On vacation from Greenwood Indiana heading to Texas this is a wonderful Museum a great part of history when I stepped onto what's left of the ship I had chills go down my spine just thinking of the history that I was standing on
Nat'l Park Service always does a superb presentation. The outline of the proceedings was abbreviated, it does give you an idea of what went on in the spring of '63.
Very cool museum. The ship is really cool to walk through.
Really cool park. Seeing the ironclad and being able to walk into it was fantastic. Would definitely recommend if someone plans on going by Vicksburg.
This is a great historic park. There are lots of monuments honoring fallen civil war soldiers from various areas, and artifacts on display for viewing. There are small reenactments that are period correct, including a canon loading and firing off portion. The video of the ship discovery and recovery is great. Definitely the best Civil War park and museum that we've visited.
We stopped at the Vicksburg battle field to look at the monuments. We had no idea that this exhibit was here. By far the best part of the tour. We loved being able to stand on this boat. The artifacts recovered from the boat were very interesting.
Highly enjoyed the museum, they have lots of interesting artifacts and the USS Cairo is amazing to see.
The museum was amazing. They have a large portion of the original ship on display and they have a large exhibit displaying artifacts that were salvaged when they recovered the ship from the bottom of the Mississippi River. This museum is a definite must see.
Wonderful exhibit. Lots to learn and see.
Great opportunity to learn more about our nation's history.
Great place. Must see
Lots of civil war information.
Amazing to see this Ironclad rescued and beautifully restored and in this amazing location. Visit the whole Military National Park. Eye opener even if you know your Civil War history!
Very interesting exhibit. Walked all around this old river boat. Amazing how strong and well built these gunboats were.
This was a really nice place. So much history. The short movie at the visitors center is very informative.
This was awesome! To see nineteenth century technology up close was inspiring. How could they have created such a huge machine back then? But they did and you can see it up close.
This place was awesome, just wish that the museum and gift shop wouldn't have closed 15 min early. Was really looking forward to that.
The battlefield was something, but this ship and museum was the highlight of my day. Simply wonderful.
Great place to visit. This ship is what makes history come alive. Definitely need to be visited.
Beautiful cemetery. Beautiful ride though history.
Amazing to see this Ironclad rescued and beautifully restored and in this amazing location. Visit the whole Military National Park. Eye opener even if you know your Civil War history!
Great exibit
Fascinating to see the ship up close.
We loved being able to walk on/around the USS Cairo. The museum was a perfect escape from the heat. The museum is perfect for all ages...little kids can't get into the displays. Clean restrooms. Great stop along the tour of Vicksburg National Park!
Boat was larger than I expected. In good shape for being that old. They have it setup nicely, so you can walk all around and see all the parts and pieces. Nice placards all around that tell you what you're looking at. Amazing how much personal items were recovered from the bottom of the River.
Wow! The park service always has great presentations.
Very interesting exhibit. Walked all around this old river boat. Amazing how strong and well built these gunboats were.
Ever since I was in grade school and saw on need about raising the Cairo from the river I have been trying to get the time to visit it.
The USS Cairo is a beautiful piece of history that is lost to the history books. Schools only teach The Monitor and the Virginia nothing else.
A fantastic and informative inclusion with the information from the military park. It really allows you to see and understand the naval elements of the siege that go along with the land based battlefield.
Really interesting to see what existed after so many years underwater
Great place to visit my family really enjoyed the time we spent three.
Could have been better if it had better upkeep. The National Park Service, seems to be interested only in making money, and not spending it on upkeep. You could tell that the exhibits are not maintained, just like the park. The only thing well maintained in this park is the damned monument to the blacks. Political correctness gone awry. We can learn from history, but not if we destroy it's monuments, or leave them neglected. I did my small part and purchased items from the gift shop. I would have spent ten times the amount or more, had the National Park Service kept the Confederate Monuments and Markers as manicured as the Yankee and negro monuments. I won't waste any more money or time here. As usual a once GREAT site sold out and will soon be out of business! Good riddance to bad rubbish!
Great historic display and museum. The recovered boat was huge snd covered by a huge tent. The museum had a film showing the recovery and many articles ftom the ship.
Very interesting place with lots of artifacts, besides it is the only surviving City Class Gunboat in the world from the Civil War.
This is an excellent display of a recovered 13 gun Civil War iron side gun boat. The outdoor display of the boat is impressive and the indoor display of all the artifacts recovered when the boat was found and raised in 1964 are well preserved.
Very interesting!
Wow!! It's amazing, and park is very special to see. Coming from visiting the Gettysburg battlefields, it's amazing , and so sad to see the terrain that the soldiers were subjected to. I was told that nothing compares to the monuments and layout that Gettysburg has, but this Cairo and the entire Vicksburg National Park is just as impressive . Worth seeing!
Lots of good history here learn some things that I didn't know before
Great work restoring the ship! The artifact displays inside were amazing as well. Great family destination.
This was a really nice place. So much history. The short movie at the visitors center is very informative.
Historically accurate and great presentation of facts
If you enjoy history & mechanics, you'll love it! The museum has really cool artifacts and displays that will surely feed the curious side of you! I took time to watch the history video.. I'm glad i did!
This is probably one of the best reasons to visit Vicksburg. The Cairo is an incredible piece of history that you can actually walk through. I love the easy distinction between new and old at this park and the clear interpretation. Take your time here and appreciate that this ship was only commissioned for 11 months. She is a beautiful vessel for the time. Inside the museum are some pieces found inside the Cairo when she was raised. Wow. You're going to be amazed!
This is an excellent small museum for all. The ship is open to walk thru parts and there are information boards. The best thing about this museum is that it gives a lot of information and does not require a lot of time to see it if other members of the party aren't interested in history or if you are under travel time schedules.
Really great place. Loved taking the kids !
Really makes it clear how Union soldiers and sailors had to work
Very interesting with a lot of civil war artifacts
I enjoy this exhibit everytime i come. There is always something good to view. The national park has always soea a great job at protecting and preseving this treasure. Lots of great history here for any history lover.
Wonderful experience! Great museum!
Absolutely amazing! Awesome experience!
This was awesome! To see nineteenth century technology up close was inspiring. How could they have created such a huge machine back then? But they did and you can see it up close.
Fun and educational
Fascinating civil war history and very interesting to be able to walk through the boat. Or what's left of it.
Truly memorable stop. Friendly HELPFUL PEOPLE... TOOK PICTURES FOR US.
Was very interesting and educational. I did learn a lot here
What a treasure! Cudos to those who dreamed, planned, envisioned and worked to get this priceless exhibit on site. This was excellently displayed and has been respectfully preserved
Well worth seeing while in Vicksburg but if you have any walking problems then take a wheelchair, cane or walker of some sort.
One of the better displays I have seen. Gives a very graphic display of what those gunboats were made of.
Love the history a must for all.
Well worth the stop here if you're going through town as there's a ton of history to be seen! They do a great job of keeping this park up and sharing the history with your family
Great place to make sure you visit while in Vicksburg!
Not every day you can see 1860s Industrial Technology.
The boat is worth the price alone...worth the stop.
Cool civil war history stop. Gift shop has the same stuff as visitor center. Should have restored it a little more authentically. No smoke stacks just 2x4's, still cool to see i recon..
Well worth the stop here if you're going through town as there's a ton of history to be seen! They do a great job of keeping this park up and sharing the history with your family
A really cool experience. The ship itself is outside which you can walk through and get an up close look. Then there is the museum building that houses items they salvaged with the ship along with a video of how they pulled the ship out. A definite must-stop during your trip around Vicksburg Military Park.
Really very interesting, from the civil war history to the history of resurrecting the Cairo! We went to Cairo before entering the Vicksburg National Military Park at the main visitor center. Wished we would have started at the Military Park visitor center first due to routing through the park bringing you right to Cairo at the end!
Such a cool museum and boat.
Great opportinity to see what an Iron Clad was like with relics from a real wreck.
Cool museum. The ship and artifacts are amazing
Very interesting
This was excellent. A must when in Vicksburg.
Very informative, wonderful visit.
One of the Ironclads of the war between the North and South. This the only one existing
Amazing civil war relic! Walking in the footsteps of history
So cool. The museum was O.K., little bit if history about it, artifacts dug up from it and a video about how they had to pull it up from the river. But the USS Cairo was really cool. Be sure to look for the hole made by the mine it hit!
That was a great adventure for our family. The walk back into history was quite thrilling. Not only was the massive battle ship amazing, even the treasures/trinkets in the museum kept the grands attention. Worth the stop.
It was very interesting to go to and learned a lot of interesting facts.a great piece of civil war history!
Good story of how it was recovered and how sailors lived.
Great place to take grandkids
Very interesting. Real relics from the past.
Awesome piece of history they've managed to preserve. Amazing to think about how long it sat at the bottom of the river & yet was skillfully reconstructed.
One of the best restorations and historic displays in the country
Stop here if you're in Vicksburg. See a piece of military boat engineering from the beginning of steamships/peak paddleboat
This is a must see especially for History be buffs! You won't find another like it.
EXCELLENT...DEFINITELY Worth the stop!!!
Very very interesting
Make time to see this on the driving tour, nice museum, too.
Very well put together. Amazing to be able to walk through the Cairo.
Very cool museum. Not much on the inside but, still very interesting
The old ironsides on display was interesting and getting to see it up close was a unique experience.
A great deal of work has gone into restoring this recovered warship. It, the grounds, and the museum are well maintained, with the museum containing many fascinating preserved artifacts of the time. The rangers and support staff are friendly, eager to answer questions. There is no additional entry fee; what is payed at the gate to Vicksburg park covers the museum.
Amazing piece of history. Tells the story of how the key rescued the boat. They let you walk through it. Really great.
Amazing to see an iron clad from the Civil War up close and personal - especially considering it's amazing history. Small but interesting museum and exhibit.
The USS Cairo Museum is part of the Vicksburg Battlefield, I did not know this when we arrived. The USS Cairo Museum was the unexpected surprise that make these trips worth their weight in gold. The USS Cairo Museum was an Civil War Ironclad ship. In late 1862, the USS Cairo was sailing up the Yazoo River near Vicksburg, MS when she was suck by the Confederates. Ironclads get their name from the iron plates used as armor to ward off cannon balls. Ironclads were nearly immune to cannon fire, but torpedo and water mines were another story. Apparently this was how the USS Cairo was sunk. Later she was raised and brought to Vicksburg and put on display. By visiting the USS Cairo a person can truly get a sense of how big these ships were. Without any apparent reason I had always assumed that they were on the smaller side. The USS Cairo Museum as part of the Vicksburg Park entrance fee.
Amazing site, amazing museum....
Interesting place to visit if you like history
This was an awesome place to visit. We just didn't have enough time to see it all. This site was on the individualized battlefield tour. This was a part of history of the Civil War I had not be aware of. Park Rangers were always around to ask questions.
It is difficult to believe that seven of these gunboats were built in one hundred days. The workload had to be tremendous. I found the Cairo to be fascinating. To be on the deck of such an important piece of history was awe inspiring.
Very interesting to see a battleship from that time
Wonderful , must see
Unbelievable that this relic was recovered, a must see.
The Cairo Museum is astounding. The mostly-intact vessel is much larger and more complicated than I ever realized. The information plaques provide important details. The indoor museum provides information about the sinking as well as displays of the artifacts that were salvaged. Thanks to the Friends of the Vicksburg National Military Park for their support to keep the museum open during the government shutdown.
This is our history. Very interesting. Very somber
Wonderful. Don't miss if you are in the area. History comes alive
Amazing place to visit for military enthusiasts
Exceptionaly well designed museum with an amazing story. The wheel chair access to all of the features and viewing area took considerable imagination and is well designed. There are two parts to this museum located on an amazingly beautiful and historic bluff overlooking the river bend below. The first is the partial or near-complete restoration of the USS Cairo in all its formal glory. The second is an indoor museum telling the story of the river boat along with a mind boggling array of recovered artifacts. This is a one-of-a-kind museum that is highly recommended for anyone visiting Vicksburg. The fact that it is located on hallowed ground amidst the memorial cemetery is sobering.
Very very interesting
What's left of the ship is in a covered, outdoor venue and you can walk around it and even through it. It's an amazing site. There's also a small, air conditioned museum next to it with restrooms and a gift shop. Parking lot on site.
The museum was the highlight of our trip to Vicksburg. We enjoyed the military park as a whole. It the Cairo was the icing on the cake. So many artifacts, a lot of information, and the restoration of the ship was done in a way that allows you to see all the working parts of the ship.
Very neat museum. Loved seeing the semi restored ship. The museum section was interesting, too! If you like ships, it's definitely a good stop. If you only kinda like ships, it's still worth stopping.
Overall very interesting. Only issue we had was that the other entrance to the vicksburg site was closed and we were hoping to view the rest of the site but decided that since you had to go back into town and then go to the other section was a 20 minute detour that at the time we did not feel worth the time. Fascinating relics from the boat in the museum.
Great bit of history!
When passing through Vicksburg need to check this out it's hard to believe that it even floated.. ??
Awsum display
Excellent history and awesome artifacts. To me, this was the highlight of the auto tour route. And there are clean restrooms at that stop, so it is a good point in the tour for a pitstop!
Impressive museum! Definitely worth the visit if you are in the area.
This was an awesome place to visit. We just didn't have enough time to see it all. This site was on the individualized battlefield tour. This was a part of history of the Civil War I had not be aware of. Park Rangers were always around to ask questions.
Very interesting boat and artifacts pulled from riverbed. Get to go onboard the original boat and see how it operated.
Any visit to Vicksburg national military Park should include a walk around one of the amazing ironclads that were in service turn the civil war. The national Park service has done a great job in restoring this sunken ironclad that was one of the vessels so important to the union victory at Vicksburg. Being able to walk through it and around it was very impactful, and gave me the sense of what it was like to be a sailor on the vessel...
Awesome! If your a civil war buff, you have to visit this!
Pretty cool...lots to see. Love the history!
Interesting, but limited little museum.
Amazing civil war boat. This is worth seeing.
Great example of civil war river ship
INCREDIBLE JOB OF RAISING THE USS CARIO AND PUTTING IT ON DISPLAY.
This is an awesome exhibit and my third visit. When you go, notice the concentric brick paving. Find the center of the concentric circles. This point is only a few feet from the bow of the boat. This is where the mine exploded and sunk the Cairo.
Very relaxing and quick story about the USS Cairo. Very interesting.
Great museum! The best example of a Union gunboat available anywhere.
It is difficult to believe that seven of these gunboats were built in one hundred days. The workload had to be tremendous. I found the Cairo to be fascinating. To be on the deck of such an important piece of history was awe inspiring.
Very interesting exhibit of boat and the museum had interesting artifacts. It is in the National park and was one of the stops we made.
Very nice. Loved information and restored ship
This is a unique museum. You can see the remains of an old iron side ship that was sunk during the Civil War. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing the artifacts they found when recovering the ship. I highly recommend stopping by if you are in the area.
Fascinating relic of the past on display for today. The reconstruction is rather good as the original ship is significantly decayed since it was underwater for a century. The adjacent museum has hundreds of items on display that belonged to the original crew. The Cairo is the cherry on top of a wonderful visit to Vicksburg military park.
Very interesting!
Very informative!
The entire National Military park was surreal. Heart wrenching to know how many died there in one battle. Very informative. Appreciated the phone number to call to get explanation of different areas.
Wow, a must see relic and museum. Super friendly guides
Great historical site to visit. The staff are great and very knowledgeable
This was excellent! It's huge; expect to spend a few hours here.
Pretty awesome close up look at components of the brown water navy during the civil war. What firepower and vulnerability at the same time. It is unbelievable that they ran the gun boats past the vicksburg batteries to ultimately move the union forces south.
