REVIEWS OF Mississippi Petrified Forest IN Mississippi

James Lauer

Nice out of the way place to come. Interesting items in the gift shop to buy. The walk was nice and informative

Nate Chertack

Just went back for my second time, had even more fun than the first. Awesome trail, unbelievable mineral collection, and adorable cat. This is my favorite place in Mississippi, and one of my favorite places in the US! Original review from March - "You need to go here. The trail is pretty cool, with a brochure to guide you along the stops to see both living and petrified trees. The highlight for me was the museum. I've gone to a lot of natural history museums, and I can honestly say that they are able to show more with one small exhibit room than many other larger museums. Instead of inundating you with hundreds of similar specimens, each specimen in the museum is unique and different. Many of the items were things I had never seen before, like man-made minerals to rare and interesting gems from around the world. I was amazed by the caliber of the collection and wish I had spent more time enjoying and appreciating all the items. The staff was very friendly and I had an amazing experience. Looking forward to visiting again someday."

Rena' Cain

My daughter and I visited this place and enjoyed ourselves. From the trail, the gems and fossils, I'm pleased. I had to compose myself or I would've easily spent $200. A hundred isn't bad on the 1st trip. I will definitely be back.

Ernesto Sano

Amazing place ,great people, very knowledgeable with everything there ... Trail was amazing,fun,and.interesting...gives you the feel of stepping back 30,000,000 years ago ...the museum of different things around the world was amazing, plus don't forget the dinamite mine and blacklight rock ... Plus the panning for rocks were fun ... I would give this place 6 stars if I could so here's another star

James Lauer

Nice out of the way place to come. Interesting items in the gift shop to buy. The walk was nice and informative

Karen Robinson

One of my favorite experiences is visiting the Petrified Forest. They offer ancient history, an awesome selection of stones, crystals natural jewelry and much more, plus learning experiences for kids. Knowledgeable help to answer questions. We are fortunate to have this in Mississippi. Thank you for a great day.

Aurora Walden

Fun and informative. Very beautiful. The gift store was amazing and good for all budgets. I loved this place!

Dave Cipriani

Very well done. Beautiful views, and many plaques describing the different plants and tree's. Note, if they offer you bug spray, take them up on it. It's free, and very much needed as you walk the trails. Plan on spending 1-2 hours there.

Julie R

We bought petrified dung.

Nicholas Sanders

Great customer service and their trail is absolutely beautiful

Priscilla Arthur

A great place to visit

Libby Stroh

Great stop for our young family on our road trip. Took about 1.5 hrs not rushed to walk the path and sift through sand for gems. Perfect exercise for our 2, 4, and 6 yr olds.

Jim Bingel

Great experience. Camping site was also perfect for us.

John Rogers

Surprising small area riddled with petrified remains. Make sure and pay for the tour. Interesting different petrified wood around the site.

Carrie Faith

Beautiful place to visit. A hidden gem in the middle of nowhere. Absolutely loved it!

Dina owen

Price is kinda high , for as short as the hike is...but I enjoyed it..

Darryl Schmidt

Nice little stop if your in the area. Very peaceful and easy walk. Very informative.

Dasha Peipon

Everyone needs to see this place!! Trees that turned into rocks are so cool to see and feel. The trail was educational. But my favorite part was the museum. They have mammoth remains that were found just a few miles away. And the 1000-year-old petrified lemon was incredible to see. We tried to guess what the petrified things were without reading about them first. The little store had lots of cool things to see. We bought a shark tooth necklace and a beautiful sparkly rock for our kids. Each was no more than $2 or $3. Beautiful earrings made of petrified wood or with gems were only $6-$8 a pair. Great place for cool locally made souvenirs. Tickets are cheap for such a great experience.

Jackie Mitchell

Love walking the trail. So peaceful

Joseph Nance

Excellent time, very friendly staff. I would highly recommend everyone to give this place a visit.

Sridhar Kusampudi

I had a nice time with family. It was a rainy day but time well spent. Don't expect too much from the place. This place has lot of woods may be million years old, fossils etc.

Stephanie Hodges

Wonderful experience in our back yard.

Wendy Boyes

Beautiful place! Bring bug spray!

Natasha Ray

Awesome place

Sue Leuschke

A beautiful natural site with a guide to teach you more about our world

Marissa Oldiges Borrego

It was a fine enough hike, but the petrified wood was almost barely visible because it’s all overgrown. Their pamphlets just repeat the same few sentences about erosion. It’s a fine enough walk and is probably good for children to learn about erosion and such processes, but as an adult it verged on boring.

Deb Serne

Beautiful, with a nice walking path. Very interesting!

Nancy Vansant

Friendly people. Interesting things to see.

Be Phelps

Awesome!

Jeff Belina

Fun visit, neat to see the petrified wood on the trail and a fun gift shop too!

Joyce Humphries Vest

Quite an experience. We were so pleased to discover this forest from information at the welcome center. It was a beautiful stop on our way to Graceland. If you are an AAA member do not forget to ask for your discount like we did.

Mystic Lee

Beautiful park amazing owners

Andy McNutt

Unfortunately arrived too close to closing to go beyond the gift shop, but everyone was incredibly nice and helpful. The location is a nice short drive from Jackson.

Glen McHenry

A beautiful place to visit. You will thoroughly enjoy it.

Walter Erb

We came today and didnt get a spot because of too many residents. This is no way to visit the park

Kelli Sanders

I absolutely love it here! They have an amazing gift shop!

DiDi

Enchanting Forest where giant petrified Sequoia trees settled during the flood years ago. The adults enjoyed its splendid beauty as the children. Marvelous walking tour in the great outdoors benefits the heart, mind and soul with all its wonder.

Donald Leonard

We enjoyed our walk through the woods. There was bug spray available, which was very fortunate. The kids enjoyed finding the numbers in the trees that corresponded to the printed guide. The guide was filled with useful information about what we were looking at and the effects of erosion over time.

C JJ

Had made reservations a week ahead of time but when we arrived, there were no sites reserved for us. We arrived after hours and had to leave with young children to find another place to stay. Looked pretty at the entrance and the staff was friendly over the phone the week before but no contact could be made for help when we arrived. Disappointed!

Tara Cook

Quiet camping. Nice trail. Super nice guy in the visitor center.

It is okay.

Chris Gaun

Relaxing half mile walk through forrest with a bunch of petrified logs from large trees that washed up on the this land eons ago. Dogs are welcome during the walk. Good place to bring kids. All told you will spend a little more than an hour touring the grounds

Tonya Hughes

It is not the same as I remember as a child.

Maryann Doiron

What a hidden gem! The trail is well maintained. The museum is amazing and the owners incredibly friendly.

Angela Sloan

Had made reservations a week ahead of time but when we arrived, there were no sites reserved for us. We arrived after hours and had to leave with young children to find another place to stay. Looked pretty at the entrance and the staff was friendly over the phone the week before but no contact could be made for help when we arrived. Disappointed!

madeline cuevas

We love it. It's relaxed and super easy to bring kids. Best rock shop in MS too. Beautiful trail and neat little museum and fluming.

Mariah West

Wonderful afternoon activity. The whole family enjoyed! Staff was friendly, grounds were well kept. A great glimpse into a past era.

Mary Jones

This place is a family tradition. We love it! So beautiful. Always friendly staff.

Shaun A

The trail tour thing was beautiful but short and kinda dull. However the gift shop/rock shop was to die for. Awesome selection.

Kurt Weber

We thought this would be a snoozer bit found it extremely interesting. Lots of signs along a week marked path explaining how the petrified first was created and how changes in weather and rainfall have changed the landscape over time. Highly recommend.

John Travis

Quaint local attraction. People very friendly. Not terribly expensive either. You should go at least once and especially if you live close by.

Rachel Harris

I always hear mixed reviews on this longstanding Mississippi attraction, but the rock-loving nerd in me LOVES this place. The walk through the woods is so peaceful, and it's amazing to see petrified wood and learn how it formed over centuries. The gift shop has some really neat rocks and gems, jewelry, housewares, and novelty items. My kids love the rock candy, and I love the incense burners and cool one-of-a-kind jewelry. Prices are very reasonable, and there's usually a Groupon to save even more, if you use that service. Allow 1-2 hours to experience this attraction. Tent camping sites also available on-site.

Mark P

Beautiful stop for a day of nature and learning. Made a vacation strictly to go see this stop and it was great. Saw wildlife and had an amazing cat tour guide who walked with us and kept me and my SO company. (We walked in as soon as the doors opened and were all alone.) Great stop if you want to walk a trail and take in the beauty. Interesting array of gems and geodes and other interesting displays they've built.

outside421

A cool little place to take the kids. Educational and dog friendly. The staff is super friendly too.

Tracmae Treasure Chest

Nice trail. Not as long as I remembered. They have a cat at the end though. I'm allergic to cats so I didn't really care for the cat and his little bowls being there. Then in the outside store, what do ya know, more cats. Yuck!

Kathryn Sindt

Tourist trap. Not handicap friendly.

Mohanasruthi Sanku

I love the gem store. I bought so many nice pendants and earrings last time I went with my husband! Added some beautiful unique pieces to my jewely collection.

Gmonee LUCKETT

A perfect opportunity to see the MS at its core...A good family adventure...P.S. Bring a picnic basket...

sally g lebourgeois

Lots of parking. Campground. ...plus oldgrowth forest, gift shop and a sweet kitty, too.

Hockey5211

Don Drury

Never knew Mississippi had such a place. Very interesting, very fun!

Miss Button

Stopped by on a sunny February day. What a pleasant walk in the woods, with a map and numbered points of interest along the way. Great photo ops when the leaves aren't on the trees (long views thru the woods). Take a deep breath of the fresh air and forget your cares here. The gift shop was full and worthwhile, and the museum was like none other with examples of rocks and semi-precious gems from around the world...well-curated. There is a fee to walk the trail so be prepared for that.

Joseph McGriff

A really great place interesting historic a good place to take a girl on a first date because you can walk talk and enjoy the natural beauty of Mississippi Forest

R Whit

Simply beautiful. Can't imagine it took me bringing grands to get here, Love it. A must see place

mark lee

This is very interesting place and sheared some unknown facts.

Tim Rudolph

Step into history, a half mile trail, a gift shop, lots of things for the kids to beg for. The gem flume is, bluntly, a bucket of sand with different stones in it. This is a plus, guaranteed stones and a souvenir bucket. Really a nice self guided tour ending in a gem and fossil display that is really cool. The shop has many reasonably priced items, and some collector grade items too.

Tara Skipton

This is a unique place since you do not see many attractions like this at all. The man working there was very nice and answered all our questions. It was a little buggy outside but they offered free bug spray. The trail was very well maintained and it was easy to traverse through the topography. I really enjoyed the indoor exhibit at the end which showed all these different minerals and other natural deposits. I bought some petrified wood earrings which were made in MS so that’s a cool keepsake to have!

Johnny Meyers

This was a cool location I go into it with more depth on my YouTube channel off the beaten Trail The staff was very friendly the forest was very unique the trail was extremely maintained the gift shop had a lot of unique items this place continue to surprise me at the end of the nature trail they have a unique Museum I definitely recommend coming here with your family it's great for everyone

This is the only petrified Forest in the Eastern US. The folks are friendly and helpful. The pamphlet is very informative when walking the trail. Beware of poison ivy and mosquitoes.

Tanya

My kids and I stopped by when we were on a girls road trip with family. They absolutely loved it. They haven't stopped talking about it and want to go back again. It was a nice place to visit and very educational.

Was a really relaxing. Great educational tour. Not being native to Mississippi, very impressed by the alternative theories not traditionally associated with the Bible Belt states. A must for everyone coming to this area.

If you don't like rocks, you will when you get finished. If you don't know local Mississippi fauna history, you will! Amazing information about fossils and the affects of nature on trees! Employees were friendly helpful, so go and take a stroll through nature and relaxe...

Andrew LaPointe

This is a nice place to see just wish we went on a cooler day!

Such a wonderfully peaceful space. The gift store is full of all kinds of goodies. If you are looking for crystals in conservative Mississippi, you'll find them here!

Very good information, wish it was bigger. RV park is quiet and extremely affordable with full hook-up, pull-through sites. Nice stop to get out and stretch your legs.

There's a nice little trail you can walk to view the petrified trees and related geology, along with a handy pamphlet guide that explains things as you go along. The admission fee was very reasonable, but the gift shop seemed a little pricey.

Frannie Reeves

Alan Reeves

Very interesting place. The tour was just okay (trail with petrified wood and other points of interest) but the gift shop had tons of amazing items. Great looking rocks from around the world.

Caleb Dean

Inexpensive short little walk with some very interesting sights. Brochure tells you everything you need to know at every stop. Museum and gift shop is also heaven for geology nerds like myself. Definitely recommend

James Mccullough

Nice gift shop with reasonably priced items. The actual trail is not as nice as expected for the price, however there is a neat little museum at the end. Makes a good little place to rest on a trip like we were taking. It's just a few minutes away from hwy 49 with nice bathrooms. Pricing was not started 1st grade=Free, 1-12= $6 each, all others $7 each. They have senior and military discount I believe as well.

Orlando Smith

This is a must see in your lifetime

Yuvraj Daljeet

You start your journey in the gift shop where you leave through a back door with a pamphlet that describes each of the attraction that is labeled by numbers. The trail is about a quarter of a mile and is both paved and unpaved. At the end of the trail there is a museum with all sorts of fossils, petrified trees, different types of rocks and other unique artifacts. My favorite part of this attraction was the gift shop they have a huge selection of artifacts, rocks, art, jewelry, and pottery that can be purchased at a reasonable price.

Christian Bach Møller

Lovely place for a walk in the forest where the petrified wood is just an added bonus. The drive was beautiful as well, so remember to enjoy the trip too.

Nick MacMan

Decent entry price with a great gift shop. The trail is very relaxing and true to nature. It is a simple park but was a very nice detour for our family. Kids will love this place.

Gloria Mayfield

For years we lived within a 20 minute drive of this place and never visited. When out of town guests came to visit on a long weekend, we suggested that we try the petrified forest. We were pleasantly surprised and pleased with the natural wonders found and displayed here.

Matthew Sullivan

Super cool shop with a metric ton of little gifts items made of stone and wood.

Rachel Robison

You're purveying and the yard around it is very nice The trail should not be charged for because it is not and I condition it has broken Williams and stops and is not very easy for elderly people are people that are handicap to go injoied the trail someone needs to clean it up desperately

Caleb Dean

Kat Barker

We had such a great time here!!! Lots to learn and beautiful pieces to see!! Even camper lots for travelers!!

Juliann Murphy

The campground is nothing fancy but for $12 rustic that has water, electricity and showers it can't be beat. Quiet, nice setting in the woods with lots of birds singing. Picnic tables could use a good scrubbing but for the price what can you say.

Tony Mullins

Great place to explore. Friendly staff and very interesting walking tour of the forest. Recommend stopping by.

cliff Anton

Fun and educational

Penny Clauss

This is a wonderful place we happened upon as we were in the area. It was worth the stop as the short hike through the forest was beautiful, informative and peaceful. Seeing the large pieces of petrified wood in their natural location along with details from the guide book was interesting. The displays they had indoors are a rich variety of rocks, petrified woods and others. Although they are in one room, I have seen specimens I had not seen in rock collections found in larger museums. The staff are also cordial, helpful and a pleasure to interact with.

Nikki Killian

Very interesting.

David Seligson

Fun excursion. But Flora is a little remote, so you have to be willing to drive a bit to get there. Worth it if you're into interesting geologic inigmas like petrified seqouia trees (i.e., western red woods) next to pines and oaks. Great picnicking area if you have time to hang out.

Barrett McAlister

We saw the sign for the Petrified Forest on our way home from the beach and on a whim, made a quick u turn. It was not at all what we expected, but was fantastic. The kids loved it and honestly, my wife and I did too. Well worth the $6 per person, the unplanned hour stop, and was definitely one of the best u turns I have ever made while driving.

Tracy Barnes

I enjoyed my nature trails walk along with the museum. I recommend going on a sunny day when it is 70 to 75 degrees. I also LOVED the gift shop, can't wait until they have an online gift shop. Thanks for everything.

James Mccullough

Nice gift shop with reasonably priced items. The actual trail is not as nice as expected for the price, however there is a neat little museum at the end. Makes a good little place to rest on a trip like we were taking. It's just a few minutes away from hwy 49 with nice bathrooms. Antomorris Johnson

I loved my experience & the really enjoyed walking the trail...

David Woerner

Super friendly staff. Beautiful camping area. Gift shop is nicely done. Did one night camping on site #6. Just passing through. Full hook ups we're easily accessible. My only complaint is that our site was really muddy and hardly any rocks next to the camp site, mostly dirt. It was fine for one night stay and the price was right.

Endearment Sophia Parker

My family LOVES this place! So peaceful and beautiful there. The gift shop / museum is absolutely amazing too!

Mike Sykes

This park is small. The Petrified Forest loop trail is beautiful, but not well maintained. The museum at the end was interesting and the gift shop was one of the best we've seen at a state park. We had a good time here and we will be back.

Bradley Weeks

Beautiful scenery and great tour guides! They're very knowledgeable and friendly. Great stop!
