I was honesty impressed. The interactive displays kept almost every visitor engaged as they walked back in time. To be totally honest, I only went to see and honor my father's presence in the museum but left with an appreciation of so much more. Well done!
While I am relatively new to the state of Mississippi, I am quite familiar with the history of the struggles people of color have waged (and continue to wage) for equal rights under the law. My experience at this museum yesterday afternoon was insightful, educational, inspirational, emotional, angering at times and yet powerful beyond words. There is simply too much there to internalize in a single visit and I will be going back. The museum directors have done an exceptional job of organizing a phenomenal collection of local Mississippi knowledge, insights and historical artifacts under one roof in a very impressive facility. It is difficult to understate the centrality of the state of Mississippi to the experience and history of African Americans in this country. I also look forward to visiting at some point the other museum right next door to better understand the way the curators may have presented any intersectionalities among the two collections of historical perspectives. Additionally, I want to commend the museum staff for being incredibly helpful, friendly and professional. I stumbled across this museum while out for a Saturday bike ride and since they didn’t have any bike racks on the premises, the security guard was kind enough to allow me to keep my bike in the vestibule while I visited the museum. (Incidentally, since there are new bike lanes springing up all over downtown Jackson, it appears there is a movement to make the city more bicycle-friendly. What better way of reinforcing this theme than to have bike racks located at civic institutions all over the city?) Finally, perhaps my most personal insight from this first visit stems from the recognition that such a museum needed to be created in the first instance—and make no mistake about it, this museum NEEDS to exist. This reality alone speaks volumes about society’s ongoing ‘three steps forward, two steps back’ approach to progress in fulfilling the original call of the founders for ‘a more perfect union.’ I’m a new fan of this museum and will support it going forward!
Was very emotional. My 11 year old boy cried and left the museum. Educational but painful.
Great place of MS history I recommend it for every race and especially now with all the crime and hatred going on in black communities because they didn't die and sacrifice their lives for nothing
Left the museum with a different level of appreciation for what Mississippi has gone through and represents in U.S. history
Great place! Lots of history! I think everyone should go at least once!
Loved it! A must visit.
Love the display n how they had the little room for different events. Very educational n informative. Quick easy way to tell children n ppl with short attention span a lot of history. Well informed info n impressive. Can't wait to bring my grandkids n my other family members.
It's definitely an eye opener and educational. Truly a worthy tour (take time viewing each area). Hope schools incorporate history tour for students. It also yielded a wide range of emotions!!
One of the best things to do in Jackson you need a full day to enjoy everything it has to offer
I learned a lot visiting the museum. I think the layout of the museum is great. Very educational and would be great for a family outing.
Informative, modern and interactive. Visual showstopper. Visceral and emotional. Well done, Jackson!
I was honesty impressed. The interactive displays kept almost every visitor engaged as they walked back in time. To be totally honest, I only went to see and honor my father's presence in the museum but left with an appreciation of so much more. Well done!
I was so emotional walking through the museum but I learned so much
This was my first trip to the museum and will definitely return on my next trip to Jackson. The people were extremely friendly, the exhibits were very detailed and well done. There was a good mixture of 2-D visual and videos. The atmosphere was good and I enjoyed the layout of the museum. I can’t wait to return so I can take more time to read.
This is a great museum that highlights the violent and brutal history that Mississippi had just one generation ago. The museum itself is very thorough starting with a brief overview of the transatlantic slave trade and then jumping into the Civil War and Civil Rights movement right after. I always go here when I'm in Jackson and I personally think this is the best one.
The museum was wonderful! The exhibits were great and very informative. It's a great place to take the kids.
Very, very imformative. I was impressed with the settings in which the videos took place. I WILL be back!
The BEST civil rights museum period. Covers every area of the state in civil rights history. I advise two days to fully take advantage of both museums.
So RICH IN HISTORY AND KNOWLEDGE
The museum is a valuable resource to the community and nation. The curators and benefactors have done and exceptional job with the collections, videos, and features! The MS Civil Rights and the MS History Museums were absolutely amazing, informative, authentic, and educational!
This museum is state of the art and very detailed. The security at the door were very friendly as was the rest of the staff. All the exhibits are detailed with dates and facts. It was clean with a solemn atmosphere. My boys are 13 and 10 and they loved learning about a part of their history. I can't wait to go back and do it again. Next time I'll wear tennis shoes.
Very exhaustive and informative. There were amazing displays of the actual events that took place in history. I enjoyed the journey of knowledge.I highly recommend it .
Absolutely a must see for everyone of every background. We learned a lot about Mississippi's civil rights history, and therefore the country's. Unfortunately, it's not a good story, but one that needs to be told.
Its a good place for adults and kids alike. It teaches about the struggles and accomplishments of the negro people. Outstanding!!!
A thoughtfully crafted museum that explores not only the past but how we can move into the future. The exhibits do a good job at immersing you in history so that you can easily imagine what it felt like to live in those times. There is also a good variety of exhibits which keeps you engaged throughout your visit.
Very informative, inspiring, intriguing...heart tugging
Always a pleasure to visit.I had a wonderful experience and an emotional one. A beautiful museum. There were amazing displays of the actual events that took place in history.
There's nothing that can prepare you for what this museum holds. I recommend that you take your time, read everything, watch every video, and never forget because we still have so much work to do, especially in Mississippi!
This part of the two museums complex. One covers the civil rights movement with a strong focus on the events in Mississippi in the turbulent 1960s while the second museum covers the history and development of Mississippi from territory to state through to modern times. The civil rights museum is compelling and uses multiple story telling techniques. There is video from the time – used for example to tell the story of Medgar Evers a civil rights leader who was assassinated. Also lots of audio clips from people in the past and display after display with photos, storyboards, and newspaper clippings and other memorabilia and artifacts from the time. This is a violent story, not least being the Klan’s killing of three activists in 1964 and the subsequent national focus on local events. Fascinating, interesting, compelling and relevant still.

Everybody need to go to this place once in a lifetime great experience
Well gained so much insight and respect on this valuable piece of American history. We are enriched by the time we spent in this well thought out experience. Thank you!
This was a great a much needed experience. A very honest look into the Civil Rights movement in Mississippi.
Excellent history demonstration in a tastefully organized mesium
It's an excellent museum. Has a comprehensive walk through the African American experience in Mississippi. I love to be thourough at museums and it took me about 4 hours to get to the end. The half dozen short films in the museum are well worth the admission.
I had a wonderful experience and an emotional one. A beautiful museum. Can't wait to visit again.
A wonderful museum! If you go on a free day that is even better :)
Enjoyed the experience.I enjoyed the journey of knowledge.Such a wealth of information and history.I recommend it highly!
I took my my mom, aunt and two young sons to these museums while visiting MS. I enjoyed the exhibits, as well did everyone else. Cafe within the museum is another topic - it was highly overpriced and the food was subpar.
I was impressed with this Museum. I think the people responsible done an excellent job on this Museum. Very insightful and I did learn a lot. There are two museums at this location. One of them is Mississippi history Museum and the other one is the Civil Rights Museum and there is a separate charge to go in each Museum. It was a light day when we was there and we did not have any problems with parking. Overall very good experience and the Personnel were extremely helpful. A must see if you like museums. If you decide to see both museums you need to do the Mississippi History Museum first and then the Civil Rights Museum second.
A very well done museum that strikes a great tone between reading and watching media. Extremely interesting and informative and well laid out. Combined with a trip to the History Museum of Mississippi, it is a full afternoon. The price is reasonable, $10, or $15 for both. There may even be a special exhibit that you can also add on. Given the subject matter, this may not be appropriate for younger children. There is also a lot reading. There are many spots to watch videos, but don't estimate the amount of written material. We have been to many museums all over the world and this museum would compete with the best of them.
Not a good place if you are in a hurry. SO Much to take in. Very well done! Center atrium is beautiful space to reflect. Exhibits concentrate on what happened in MS. We went at end of day after going through the adjacent MS history museum (also very good) and were a bit overwhelmed. I would like to go back again and just take my time and take it in slowly. Very important place to visit for people of all races.
Always a pleasure to visit. I don't care how many times you visit you're going to always learn something interesting and new.
Great interactive museum. First rate!

The best place ever to learn about how far history has changed
Exceptional! Very impressed. Looking forward to visiting again. Request that Mondays soon will be an option to enjoy the museums.
Very well structured place. Lots of history. I was a little teary eyed but I got through it!!! Glad there is finally one in Jackson.
Wow, it's like drinking from a fire hose. The history on display is both instructive and horrifying, but important to know. I kept asking myself what would I have done if I were in their shoes. How do we keep these injustices from reoccurring. Should we, and if so, how do we compensate for the sins of the past.
If you love history it's a must go
There were amazing displays of the actual events that took place in history.
Civil rights affect all of us! Must see! Very well presented!
If ever in the area, do yourself a favor and please visit this place. Was overwhelmed with how much content there was, as well as how history was back then. Very informative and enlightening...
Very interesting and heart touching museum. Lot of reading but also nice movie. Staff are very helpful.
Very well done. Emotional. Plan to be there several hours to see it all.
Phenomenal Experience. All the data, artifacts, and information has truly encompassed the state of that time period and how it has shaped the world that we currently live in.
All I can say is the knowledge just so much to take in. I will definitely go back.
Omg! What a wonderful place with so much knowledge to share to the world for all ages. For those who can't read or are sight impaired they can hear the testimonials. For those that are hearing impaired, they can read. Oh, it was wonderful. I went twice in two days and plan to go again within the next month. Awesome experience!!!
We love this museum. It's worth every penny if you're into civil rights things related or museums in general. Enjoyed the experience. Be prepared to walk around for 2 hrs to fully see everything inside.
Such a wealth of information and history. Spent all day absorbing civil rights history. State of the art and immersive.
It is very nice.A lot was put into it. Very educational. Enjoyed the visit. Learned a lot.
I love it, Jackson is my home visiting here from California. Reliving the past, I do remember the 50 and 60's history.
Wonderful place to experience civil rights movement.....absolutely loved it!
The Mississippi Civil Rights Museum was both enlightening and igniter of what needs to happen. Although it's the 21st century, there is more to be done for Civil Rights of everyone. Each one reach one and teach one. It will take all of us to make a difference where we all benefit.
It is a very informative place that presents his purposes very well
A long-awaited, highly-anticipated showstopper and MUST-SEE for any visitor to Jackson or any Mississippi resident or native. Extremely well-curated, narrated, and designed, with superb presentation and narrative of struggle for Civil Rights and racial justice. Truly a museum that Mississippians can be proud of and a unquestioned gem of American and regional culture and history. Accessible to people at all levels of familiarity with American and Southern culture, and extremely moving.
Much larger than it appeared outside. Exhibits were very informative and engaging. Great museum!
This was a wonderful way to spend the day. Kudos to the Strategic Planning Committee! I enjoyed the journey of knowledge.
There was SO much to see...to read...to learn! I'll have to return to finish. My ancestors went through such abject humiliation...such dejection...what a mighty people I am from! WE MUST BE OUR BEST, BECAUSE WE ARE NOW ABLE TO!
It was an enlightening experience.I enjoyed the journey of knowledge.I recommend it highly!
Very exhaustive and informative. Definitely worth visiting.
Wonderful experience! Very well designed museum. It's definitely an eye opener. A place that every single person need to visit.
As a native English speaker the museum is perfect. We however did have one person from Germany and one from Mexico on our trip I feel they would have greatly benefited by pamphlets or headsets to help explain some of the displayed facts. So I did mark this with 4 stars because the museum could be more inclusive for all visitors.
Great place. Enjoyed tour, outstanding information about African American history, however was not able to look at lynching room, great tour guides and discussion with staff. Spent birthday with family there. A great addition to the city's cultural environment. Also, enjoyed History Museum.
The best museum I've ever been too
Wonderful experience! Very well designed museum. It's definitely an eye opener. A place that every single person need to visit.
It shared so much about our history, it was interesting and exciting.
The magnitude of education and rich history of these museums honestly shows how far we've come and how much more we have to work on.. Mississippi we are blessed to have this gem of archives..
I enjoyed this museum ALOT. It was a lot to read but it was very interesting. I learned a lot of my stated black history. They also have videos to watch as well. We plan to take our 2 children the next time we go.
I loved all the interesting things I learned. It is a very good thing to do and very informative. I went with a group so my time was limited and didn't even get to visit the other side of the museum but I will definitely revisit on my own time. FYI every 3rd Saturday of the month is free admission so beware of the crowd on that day but other than that I highly recommend going to this museum.
Outstanding. You need DAYS to explore.
What a magnificent Museum! The displays ... the videos ... the historical truth ... the purpose of why we still seek freedom today ... it's all right here!
Wow. Don't know where to start. It is such a beautiful place that is perfectly executed. There are amazing ultra interactive exhibits that will teach truth from the past and the present. You leave somber but hopeful. My favorite room was the This Little Light of Mine room, where they have stories playing of the civil Rights movement as well as voices of people singing and a beautiful light fixture in the middle. Go with family or friends, or alone. You won't regret it. And take your time. There's a lot to process.
This museum was so perfectly laid out that the two hours we spent here seemed to fly by as we became immersed in the history. I highly recommend every one (with the exception of under 8) to visit this period of history in our shared experience of working toward “a more perfect union.”
This museum is beautiful! I'm an emotional mess each time I visit. But I read or remember something new/different each time. It's a definite visit.
Very well done. So much to read. You need several hours
Truly fantastic museum- so incredibly moving and very informative.
So much information.......grest rescource of our history.
Excellent museum that really opens people's minds to the reality of Mississippi's history ...particularly it's past in regards to civil rights. I highly recommend everyone visit the two museums!!
It was very interactive. All of the displays was filled with great detail and was very informative. It also had a cute little store and a small cafe inside!
This place is awesome! You will need at least two days to read and grasp the movements. I must go back soon.
I went with a school group of 4th graders. The curator for each museum led the groups around and explained different exhibits to the children as they were exploring. The children were very curious during the Mississippi History side there were a lot of things good and bad that were shown. The civil rights side was a little disturbing for the more sensitive students but the graphic footage such as Emmitt Till have warnings so you can be proactive. We didn't get to finish the civil rights side but the students were very immersed with the interactive displays and videos. If you not going with a school group, plan to be there for at least 2 hours each side to get the full experience.
This experience will change your life. We must value all life's because greatness comes in every ethnicity.
A good place to learn about Mississippi history
What a awesome experience. A must see. It was a family affair. #WEATHERSReunion2019
The museum is very well done with historical facts, pictures, films and artifacts. Experiencing this with family members was a bonus. I highly recommend everyone take the time to visit this museum.
A good place to know the history of missisippi and slavery in US but seems little expensive for the price paid. It was 75$ per family for free visits in a year and being a small museum I would think this is expensive. Do not waste tickets for the one in 2nd floor as they dont have much. You can just visit missisippi history or civil rights based on your interest! There is ample free space parking and calm location.
Loved it but I didn't get a chance to finish touring. I can't wait to return.
Such a wonderful addition to the city! We enjoyed the few hours we had to spend there. The stories are so artistically presented in a timeline format. We could have easily spend another day viewing all that we missed on our first visit. A must for anyone interested in what really took place in history.
This is a must visit place. The plain truth can be profound.
One of the best museum I have ever been in. It's great for history and show the true light what happen in that era.
I really enjoyed the quilt exhibit, as well as the moving information presented in the struggle for civil rights.
Not to be missed. Impossible to give a higher recommendation.
I was there for my Great Aunt's 90th birthday. It was such a moving experience, so accurate and so eye opening. If you thought you new African American history, this will make you rethink what you thought you knew. Get in early, it takes time to absorb what is presented.
Eye opening experience. Need a while day to walk through the museum and take it all in.
Amazing.. so much information on Civil rights and our History
Great place to visit. Be prepared to get emotional.
Everybody should see this. Especially if you are white and grew up in the south as i did. I thought i lived through the Jim Crow era, so i should not be surprised by what i learned. It seems i didn't really know as a child. I was profoundly moved. All white people would benefit from being "woke" by this experience.
I really don't know what to say this place really touched me more ways than one To say what people really think about my kind and the way they were treated and tortured really stirred something inside me I'm grateful for their sacrifice. Educate yourself. Twitte this.
I went to the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum in early January and I loved it, this museum not only pushes you from your comfort zone by its own design but it makes you realize that the history you're learning about IS American history! My favorite exhibit had to be the 'This Little Light of Mine' sculpture in the main gallery, sitting there and listening to the music near brought me to tears. If you ever have the chance to go there I would highly recommend going, I had a limited time there because of how long I was staying in Jackson but if I ever get the chance to go back I definitely will!
Great place to visit to learn some history.
Great museum. Free parking available on site.
Great place. Enjoyed tour, outstanding information about African American history, however was not able to look at lynching room, great tour guides and discussion with staff. Spent birthday with family there. A great addition to the city's cultural environment. Also, enjoyed History Museum.
Great knowledge and experience there with knowledgeable and real people that been through it all
This was a great learning experience in history a lot of things I did not know.. Excellent...Highly recommended
Was really impressed with amount of Mississippi history in building and how much the state is the focus of so many of the exhibits.
Make sure to check out all the exhibits. A very sobering experience.
Beautiful museum. They have a banquet hall for events. Nice room! Event planner for the museum is awesome.
Americans, this is a must visit museum to learn firsthand how other Americans were subjected to brutality, neglect and denial of basic human dignity but persevered despite it all. It is a somber reminder that at our core, we are all humans whose experience of America, although different, wish the best for our fellow American and must never let our minor differences lead us away from making this land better for us all. There should be a day dedicated to the collective thanks, recognition and appreciation for the brave people whose lives are chronicled here and those who sacrificed so much so that the images and exhibits seen here are never repeated any where on this planet.
It was my first time going to the museum. I was there to screen a documentary on the James Meredith's admission to Ole Ms in Oxford, MS which was very well done, by his wife l must say. It is a lovely space. I'm so looking forward to going back to see the full museum and it's exhibits. Great experience.
History in one room. It's so emotional but well worth knowing the history of my people and state.
This place is great, you will leave here enlighten. The experience is so real, it may cause you to feel emotional but you must go and see this place. To truly appreciate it, it may take a few hours to go through it all. So please take your time and educate yourself
Great experience and so much valuable history!
Phenomenal experience...learn the history and change our future based on knowledge not racism.

What a great museum! This place is so very nicely built and has so much valuable information! I would recommend that you visit if you’re in the area! Truly a special place!
Powerful and moving museum that traces the history of African Americans in the South through the importance of Jackson and other Mississippi locations to the Civil Rights movement.
First off, 3rd Saturday each month is free admission to all. Be advised the free day is ver busy. 2/16/19 was my first visit. The museum is very nice & informative. There is a (free) parking building right beside the building. The museum is self guided & will generally take 1-2hrs to tour depending on how quickly you cover the material. The information is very eye opening and pure. I really enjoyed the historic aspect of the material. I would recommend this to everyone both young & old. It's only a few miles off the interstate so anyone passing through should stop by.
Chilling. Very well curated museum, a must-visit in Jackson.
This was an extremely moving and very well designed museum. One could easily spend 2-3 hours here. Being from out west it really opened my eyes to a whole new light of what it was like in the South.
Great information it still left out alot of information! But it was good...a must see
I was a chaperone for my daughter's class, and I absolutely LOVED it! The trip was only around 2hrs, so I truly feel that I didn't get to appreciate all that it had to teach and the exposure it gave to such a critical time period. I'm definitely going back, very soon!
My God!!! So emotional. This was an unbelievable realization of Civil Rights and the Passage.
One of the best museums in the country in my book
Very educational, would recommend anyone visiting the area.
It was an enlightening experience. I highly recommend it .
Yes, yes, yes!!!! My wife and I love museums and travel to see them. Hands down this museum is one of the best, if not the best museum we have been too! We can't wait until we get the chance to come back!!!
Loves it and learned some stuff i didnt know even after 55 years of age.

You need to visit Mississippi's history. I learned a lot visiting this place
EXCELLENT!!!!!! Must go! Incredibly informative, lots to look at and experience. Really gives you a better and deeper understanding. Easy to navigate and be able to take everything in. There is usually someone there that was involved personally with the Civil Rights movement to talk with and answer your questions. Love that!! There is a cafe for lunch available.
Best Museum I've ever been to.
I was just there for a field trip on April 5th it was a very good experience for me and my class to see what slavery is really about in to see Mississippi history I am so thankful for the opportunity of you guys invited me in my classmates there 2 line what history is really about the museum is very nice in the inside very nice people all of the people together represent a wonderful family they all love each other and they all work hard to get where they are now Mississippi civil rights Museum in Jackson Mississippi is the best museum I have ever been to in my life
When we know better, We do better!
I really enjoyed taking some kids to see what happened in the past and teaching them about the past and learning about all of our heritages. They enjoyed the guns and weapons.
Great History lesson. This is a must see for anyone who cares.
This was a very excellent Museum, so much documentation of history
Important information, well done. The mini movie documentaries in particular are wonderfully put together.
Excellent, thought-provoking museum. As a local told us, its sort of surprising Mississippi built a museum like this. The exhibits tell the story of racial oppression and the struggle for equality. A highlight was hearing the guides, docents, security people (I couldn't quite figure out their role exactly) who were willing to answer questions and share some of the own stories. One man, Hezekiah pointed to his picture which was on the wall in the gallery of Freedom Riders. Our students realized these events really weren't that long ago. If you are in the area, visit.
Wonderful museum! A must visit while in Jackson, MS!
Amazing place to explore history. Plan sufficient time (approximately 2 to 3 hours) to be totally captivated.
Absolutely fantastic museum! Easily one of the best I have ever been to. They tell it exactly how it was. There are some more intense and/or graphic parts of the museum. I will definitely be back. Very powerful exhibits.
This museum was very well-thought and organized. My wife and I have also visited the Civil Rights Museum in Memphis and we agreed that we enjoyed this museum as much as it - taking into consideration the difference in scope. Would highly recommend this museum! As a note, it's text-heavy, so if that's not your thing I think you need to know.
A real eye opening moment of how far we've come in society today
Great place for a high school history field trip.
Good place to take the family for a history lesson. It's a beautiful place.
Good and accurate of the black struggle for justice and equality and a good lesson to teach all about the past and the present
The museum is a great place to visit. There is a lot of wonderful information there.
Great museum! If you go on a free day, be prepared for the crowd. Bus loads of people. I love how the museum is divided into years. There is a ton of history and they have a lot of very insightful pieces from the time. It's a must see for all races! I believe everyone should go at least twice. It's too much to see in one visit. The museum helps show how things have changed, yet also shows how things are the same. In order to truly embrace racism, we must learn about each other to rid ourselves of the fear that ensnares us and keeps us viewing others differently or beneath us. We are all humans first, separated by our history.
An AMAZING EXPERIENCE! I recommend it highly!
Get place to visit and learn about all history
Excellent. Best museum I've seen in years
The civil rights museum is an awesome place to visit. It was very enlightening on what our ancestors went through. This is a great place for schools, churches and families to visit.
Terrific installation. Heavy duty history, over all well presented. A touch overwhelming for my 9 year old, but still good for him to learn about it. He preferred the Mississippi History Museum right next door.
Sad truthfully educational clean Friendly
