REVIEWS OF Edgar Allan Poe House & Museum IN Maryland

Teresa Shaffer

Great place to visit

Marcy Edwards

Love Poe but there are only two reasons to go here. 1) To stand in a space where he lived, though it was only for a couple of years. 2) To marvel at how tiny it is. I mean itty bitty, like "tiny house" trend small, and there is practically nothing in it. Several of the few things they do have may or may not have actually belonged to Mr. Poe. Great photo opportunity out in front of the house by the street sign. Don't mind the reviews that talk about the sketchy neighborhood. It's really not that bad and you'll be there in broad daylight. Cute gift shop with several cool Poe souvenirs.

Megan Ann Miller

So cool to see where Poe lived for a time! I would definitely go back.

Camille Beeler

It was an awesome experience and the tore guides we're very friendly and helpful.

Araceli A

GREAT EXPERIENCE!! Modernization across the street kind of affects the historical atmosphere. But Mr. Poe is one of my favorite authors, and I loved the experience.

Ashley Varnum

I love Poe's writing and was very excited to visit this place. The admission ($8) was a little steep for such a small place and the "gift shop" was quite tiny. I enjoyed seeing the place as it isn't something that you can visit in just any state but I won't be driving over 15hrs just to go back.

carmen ruiz

Doesn't take much time to do this attraction, but definitely one of my favorites. i love Edgar Allan Poe work and if you enjoy museum's you will appreciate these one. don't go without check the Graves, make some extra time, you will not regret it

Rachel Morrison

Worth the trip for any Poe or history fan. Super small so will not take too much time to tour.

Howard Fair

Neighborhood can be very difficult

Hsuan-lei Sung

Really cool place but not so much to see as a museum.

Krystal S.

Great little place to visit. Staff was very friendly and knowledgeable.

Red

Fascinating visit. We were amused that the serious nature exemplified by the writings posted created such consternation by viewers. We understand people of earlier eras realized the brief, dire nature of life, as do we. Then we were treated to the agonizing and complaining of morbidly obese individuals who couldn't fit into the stairwell. Without the rude visitations of contemporary tourists, this was a crisp illumination of life in the early nineteenth century. With the tourists it served as a reminder how soft, and childlike Americans have become. For those of you rugged enough to scale the narrow steep stairway, you may imagine yourself up there, writing to candlelight and wishing time could stand still.

wolf pack

This was a nice place to go. If you like history or Pope himself this is a place you have to visit.

Gretchen W

Great place to learn details about the life of Edgar Allen Poe

Rita Pearson

We didn't get to go in but it was cool to see. Very well preserved. I imagined him sitting at his desk with his pen in his hand in front of the window...

Shawn Winpigler

Quaint little place!

Mary Hendrie

Cool little piece of Baltimore and literary history. The folks who work here are quite knowledgeable and friendly. It's a small house so don't expect this to take up your whole day, but visit Poe's grave after as part of your city tour.

Debbie Trencher

Well maintained, a lot to learn on placards. A little cramped, but just take it slow.

Tara Seibel

Everyone who works there is so nice and knowledgeable. GREAT visit!

Ellie Johnson

Its the original house, so be prepared for tight spaces! I wish there was more history about Edgar's writings here, but a cool spot nonetheless.

Dawn Riddick

Now that they are building New apartments near by and possibly clearing up the area, it may be a nice place to visit

Charles Ogier de Batz de Castelmore Comte dArtagna

The neighborhood is scarier than anything Poe ever wrote!

Jason Sharitt

Was closed when I went. Kinda cool that the house is still there, but it's in a sketchy part of town.

Cheryl OBrien

Very small house, not a lot to look at.

Paula Spence

This place is TEENY, but that is part of the charm. You'll have plenty of time to see everything in 30 minutes or less, including the little shop at the entrance. Buy a little something . . . It helps keep the place open. Worth the trip if you're a fan.

Victoria Whitney

A very well kept historical house with knowledgeable and friendly tour guides. Despite the fact that the house is indeed small, there's enough history and the people there know enough and are kind enough that visits can stretch for over an hour easily. We drove there and parked on the street FOR FREE (I believe it was a two hour parking limit between 7AM and 9PM? locals were exempt). The furnishings are not originals with the exception of a few artifacts that are behind glass, but still all the material in the house is from roughly the same time frame as the Poe/Clemm family would have lived there. I've heard several times over the years that the house is in a "bad" part of town but when we went it was in broad daylight in the middle of the week and my group (two adult women and an adult man) felt perfectly safe. There's a few friendly cats that like to hang around but they're not inside the house so no worries for those of us with allergies. Bonus. it's less than a ten minute drive from Poe's gravesite. Despite being such a tiny little house, they have a mini gift shop by the entrance/exit (front door entry way of the house) with proceeds going back to running the house with as much or more variety of Poe themed things (sorely tempted to get the marble statue) as any of the general gift shops in the city.

stages of life

Poe's fan? Its a must visit. Take taxi!

Susan K

Not to be too humorous about Poe's early childhood but he really did live in the "Poe" section of town. Looks like they built Baltimore's Projects around his house. Didn't get insidecasvitvwas closed when we got there, but please proceed to his final resting place, which is incidentally across the street from his grade school.

Alexis R

Super cool place to visit! I went on a whim with a friend, and it was awesome. I will say though, it is not in the “best part of town.” We walked from about a half mile away, and were cat-called, had things shouted at us out of car windows, and had someone follow us while shouting crude things at us. I would suggest an Uber/Lyft/Taxi for sure. But once you’re there, it’s an awesome place to walk around. The house is lined with lots of facts about Poe’s time there and even his whole life. I though we only walked around for about ten minutes, and when I looked at my watch it had been an hour! Great time!

Eric Trismen

Interesting, but a bit pricey at $8 a head.

DY H

Not a very large home so don't expect to be wowed. There are some of his personal items but most of the home is filled with items inspired by his life. Small fee for entry, reasonable as it is a privately funded exhibit.

Mariana Sbaraini

Great, but little museum. Could have a bit more information about Poes books

Derek Frazee

This is an amazing place where you find all the cultures at a single place. This a huge diversity place.

Bristol Sauer

Went during the Edgar Allan Poe festival so our time was limited but I would love to visit again. Very cool and factual place.

David Poalucci

Just a small row house. Construction in area. Parking hard to find. Very interesting place to visit.

Cassandra Heide

I enjoyed visiting the Edgar Allan Poe House. I'm giving a 3 star rating because in my mind that indicates average. The Edgar Allan Poe house isn't anything amazing that you haven't seen before. However, if you know who Edgar Allan Poe is and you have an appreciation for his work, then visiting his house is a great way to spend 30 minutes. Also, this attraction is very low-cost, so the cost is worth the visit. I'd recommend this to anyone who has an interest in Edgar Allan Poe's life. I enjoyed learning more about his house and how he lived.

allen halbleib

The E. A. Poe house was not at all what I had expected it would be but it was still an amazing experience that I would recommend to anyone. The tour was self guided and fairly cheap considering the tourist packed inner harbor only a couple of miles down the road. There are few volunteers stationed around to answer questions youight have. And a small gift shop at the front room inside the house.

Jason Mills

Very small museum... you can see it all in 10-15 minutes. But very cool to see a preserved house of Poe's from his time in Baltimore and learn a bit about the time he spent in this city. Not too far from downtown, it is worth stopping in if you have the time.

tai_ tai

Great historical place for the family!

kodman15323

I brought my kids there last summer we learned so much. The place was beautifully done . Will definitely do a return visit.

Katie Hunt-Tobey

A little more expensive than expected but has some cool history

Dante Luna

I absolutely love the people keeping this place alive!!! thank you all for giving me the chance to experience this

Abby Podratz

Small. Interesting, but not really worth the $8.

Archit Harsh

For Poe's fans and admirers, this is a must Visit. Great to see the place where some of his best works were penned down. It is a tiny house so be cautious while climbing stairs and such. Overall, decent experience.

Brian Argüello

Wow can't believe how helpful and knowledgeable the staff are here. For such a small and underfunded operation, they are able to make the experience more interesting and enjoyable. Don't forget to ask about the various Poe Places in the area. They make for a great addendum to the museum experience. I highly recommend this place for fans of Poe!

Jason Medina

So cool to be in this historic house, although the rooms are very small.

Cristabel J

A must-see stop for any Edgar Allan Poe fan! Anyone else might not like it as it is a very small museum for the price you pay. With reading everything and waiting to go upstairs to see his bedroom, it was a total of about 30 minutes (maybe less) spent there. They do have a lot of great stuff in the shop when you go in, so if you are only looking for souvenirs/shopping, you can do so without also paying to go into the house. Please support this place with either buying from the shop, paying to go into the house, or with donations! The staff was very friendly and helpful, too! And no, no restroom. Go to Walgreens a couple of blocks down for that.

P Brown

It was very small but they only charged accordingly. Interesting to see how people lived back in his time. So minimal. Interesting facts were available and cute trinkets for purchase.

Dick Higgins

Small but very interesting museum. Truly does have a certain atmosphere befitting Poe.

Sierra Timchula

Best birthday experience! It wasn't much but it was a piece of history and that's all I care about!

Giovana Landal

Very disappointing. Really tiny place, not exactly safe to be inside. Didn’t really have a lot of stuff to see or buy. One weird lady told us everything about his life, but I could have learned about it online, in a comfortable place.

Katherine Lambert

Great place staff full of knowledge a must see for anyone that knows the writing

Diana Magee

Expensive price- not so much to do there on a regular day. House was preserved well and the information was interesting. Short visit.

Christopher Taylor

Very nice house just did not realize that it was in the projects and slums of Baltimore

明けの明星サタン666

Learn about one of Americas greatest poet and then walk outside and score some crack, heroin and even Molly. Name your poison, and sadly, it's available to you right around the corner.

Sybilla Bakzaza

Fantastic staff, AWESOME gift shop that includes post cards, magnets and a graphic novel written by the director. You can actually see where Poe slept. Many fun fact mentions and very accessible. Not handicapped friendly, but that is due to the architecture. They turned us on to his grave down the way.

Kirk Rose Jr

Cool little piece of American history. Staff was friendly and very knowledgeable except for when my wife asked how far from the house was Poe found unconscious lol. Definitely worth stopping by if you're in the area.

Rachel Thomasson

Nothing major in his life.

teresa milano

Very small. Not a lot to see and mostly just information on the walls.

Mila Borich

Eddy wasn't even there, can somebody tell me when I can meet my favorite author, I would love to know when he is available.

Jennifer Tomor

Charming, tidy, and a very kind and informative staff. The gift area was refreshing and parking on the street was simple and ample. The history here will give you goosebumps. Loved our visit.

Benjamin Chartier

cool historical house to check out, with very informed employee. However it is in a rough part of baltimore, and while there is a large parking structure nearby, the walk over was a bit unnerving. Still worth a stop to see the last place Poe lived, although the house itself is quite small. B+O railroad museum is also right down the street!

Jeff Sams

An excellent place to visit, just very small. Not a lot to see inside, but what they have preserved is excellent. I appreciated the helpful guides on the tour.

Kristen Gulish

I’m not a fan of guided tours, but Debbie did a great job sharing all the items on the display and discussing the life and history of Poe. She was so enthusiastic and made it a lot of fun! It wasn’t just a tour, it was a story. Don’t miss out!

Tammy Darlene

If your an E.A.P. fan, this is a must visit.

Brendan Bobylak

Neat place. Smaller than i thought it was going to be but had a alot of interesting info on Poe and his family.

Ravenpuff

Very quaint, great place for fans although very small capacity so you must be patient for your turn

Nicholas Elliot

Very cool! The guides were very polite and knowledgeable! A must see if you visit Baltimore!

Nancy Seate

This may be a fine place to visit, but it has many stairs inside and at the entrance and is not accessible or up to modern standards, partly because of it's age. It is imossible to persons with wheelchairs.

Jo Schmo

Yes it may be hot, but the atmosphere is pretty cool. This tiny historic building is such an amazing and educational spot and is great to bring teens to. The stairs are steep and small but well worth the climb. I seriously loved the entire experience and would love to see more generations visit for years to come

Asia Rena Gillespie

Wonderful piece of history if you are a Poe fan. The folks working there are very knowledgeable and courteous. It is in a sketchy block of Baltimore , however, if your there during the day you shouldn't have much to worry about. Parking is limited so I would suggest a Taxi of some sort.

Brenda Frost

Closed on Mondays but would love to visit

pattimom 555

Tinier than the one in Philly..

Connie Green

The house is a museum and there are diagrams and info about his life in general and how the family lived in this teeny-tiny house. We stayed around 40 minutes. The stairs are super steep and hard to climb even if you don't have mobility problems. It is in a sketchy neighborhood, but even standing around outside we didn't have any problems. Only parking is on the street. Visiting the house gives you an idea of how difficult Poe's life probably was. If you're interested in Poe or history of that time, the house is worth a visit.

Zackary Wood

Wonderful quaint museum with volunteers that have a genuine love for the man and his work.

Judith Steffens

We spent an hour at this museum and learned a great deal about Poe, his unhappy life and his incredible writing. The museum is well organized and contains an eclectic collection of artifacts. The office staff person, Kionna, was welcoming and helpful. We enjoyed our visit.

Shelby Lenker

We went on Edgar Allen Poe's birthday. The rooms are surprisingly small and with other visitors being there also it was a little cramped. The staff was friendly. Lots of things to read and look at though. From there we stopped at the cemetery were Poe is buried. Very Victorian looking.

James Doyle

Although Edgar Allan Poe lived in a wide range of houses from Boston to Richmond over the course of his short life, only three are extant today and all are museums. This particular home dates from approximately 1830 and was rented by an aunt whom he lived with from 1833 to 1835, along with cousins, one of whom he would marry just a few years later. Several early stories were penned here. The house, of course, is very small and historically accurate, so don't expect a lot of headroom or central AC. The value for the visitor is to stand in the same space where he lived and dreamed. There are some interesting exhibits, including items which must have been used by the great writer. The bedroom at the top, presented as his, may not have been. It is furnished with period pieces which did not actually belong to him. Helpful, friendly staff. In total, a 15 to 20-minute visit. This is the maximum you want to stay because there is a real risk of crime on the street and in the larger neighborhood. Nice gift shop. A must-see for any visitor to Baltimore with literary interests. History is indebted to Poe Baltimore, the governing institution, for preserving our cultural patrimony.

Ian Jobling

Worth seeing but there isn't a lot there. Also it's in a dangerous neighborhood so don't walk there alone.

Shahid Naqvi

It was great to see an ordinary 19th century house where a great author lived. Quaint. Hopefully, after all the nearby construction is over, the area would look much nicer for visitors.

B C

It's a great place to see and the gift shop has neat items. It's VERY small, especially the entrance, so if it's filled you'll have to wait outside. But it's worth the wait!!

jpvideo1234

Very informative and the history is amazing. I loved every minute of it.

donald ridley

Good place to bring the whole entire family

christopher pioth

Great place to see!

Justin Worst

The place is really small, there's only five rooms including the entrance so you can see everything in about 30 minutes. There's information about Poe and his family's connection to the house in all of the rooms and the volunteers who work there are very knowledgeable. It's $5 for adults to walk through, I'm not sure about the price for children. It's pretty cool to check out if you're a fan of Poe or historic buildings.

Lori Badgero

An eye opening view into the life of Edgar Allan Poe. Knowledgeable curators and shopping available, easily found with GPS. We spent a generous hour just taking in the basics. One of the most interesting things I have ever done! Discover history not found in History books here. Enrica Jang, coauthor of one of the books available for purchase, is just one person available at the front desk.

Joel Wasinger

First, fragile white folks, the neighborhood is fine. We didn't feel threatened or at all in danger. Good Lord, people, spend a few more minutes away from suburbia; it would do you good. The museum itself is great. Honestly, it's mostly just a tiny house, but the volunteer staff are AMAZING. The tiny house itself, and the various artifacts and the quotes on the wall are cool. But the staff make it worth the trip. They're full of knowledge--including stories much less well known--about Poe and his family. As others have indicated, they also know a good bit about Baltimore and the surrounding area, and gave us some great tips for other sights to see and things to do. And they're eager to take questions and make the experience personal. I highly recommend it. Buy some stuff in the little gift shop too, so that this work is supported and can continue. They've got a good collection of Poe-worthy (interesting and slightly odd) memorabilia.

Kit Bishop

DXB liked the Black Cat. I got a compilation book for only $20. I love EAP!

SDS BEATGOD

History still there but is surrounded by open market drug dealing. You get what Baltimore is really about at poe home. Bmore careful "

Kevin JaXuN

Not a good area but worth a visit if you are staying nearby. It puts a few things into perspective considering the period in which he lived. Not a long walk to the grave site from here (consider the area though).

Aaron Uchytil

Great experience. The writing desk was quite interesting!

Kraig Williams

Lets just say it's not a place to visit if your a person of stature. Low ceilings and very narrow stairs. But if you're a fan you probably wouldn't care. Be safe in that area. It's not the safest place to be during certain times a day and night.

Cristianna Nelson

Parking on the side street is simple and easy. They do have hideous condo's though right across the street though that baffles your mind since everything around it is poor housing that the government doesn't take care of. The house is small and simple but put's into perspective what Edgar's life was like for a little bit. The people are very polite and helpful if you have any questions.

marianne Belcastro

Interesting apt, very small and hot.well maintained..must be very thin or small to climb winding stairwell to top floor. volunteers add to the story. Wish they had adult size tee shirts. Small gift area. We had to wait to be let in..

Darrin McAllister

Quaint and very interesting

Joy Wester

Bucket list item. Lots of information about Poe.

Lauren White

pretty small, but pretty cool visit! cant take the kids until theyre older.

Amy Mason

I think you need to be a Poe fan to truly appreciate this museum, but I loved it. It's rather small, but has very interesting facts about Poe and his works. Great little gift shop area. The docents are wonderful; very knowledgeable and pleasant to chat with.

Brock Webb

Not worth it, go to the grave instead. My kids wanted to look, but they had a reading upstairs and apparently they weren't welcome because (in their excitement) they were talking. Wouldn't let my 10yr old use the bathroom, we walked to the nearest drugstore. So glad my kid got to see guys with guns, a drug deal, step over 'little baggies' and such on the way so he could pee... Never got to see anything beyond the tiny gift shop. We asked for a refund. Will we ever return? The Raven already knows that answer, "Nevermore"

Chris Gibson

Some interesting details about his life there in Baltimore but in all honesty it is a small dingy place with little to offer. Not worth the entrance fee.

Kimberly Keyes

This house is a bit on the small and narrow side. That's because it was located in what was a working class and poor area during Poe's time. It's still worth a visit if you're into Poe.

Tony Plante

A neat find for a little bit of “hidden history.” Glad we took the time.

Zachary Stewart

Is A Nice place to visit when open

Lacie Hinton

The staff are very knowledgeable and passionate about the history of the house amd it's infamous owner. Admittedly, the house is small, but thats to be expected from a house of that time period. They have preserved the house well and will answer any questions you have to the best they can. The house itself is very creepy and gives you insight int the mind of Edgar Allan Poe.

Joan C

The area in which the house is located has got to be one, if not the roughest area of Baltimore. Not very encouraging to go there when the street sorta looks like favelas.

Binary

There is a limit to the number of people due to space constraints. Plan for a wait. There is a cute gift shop to browse

Leticia

I learned so much about poe! As someone who is not a Poe fanatic,I enjoyed the place. It was nice being in the size of house that people lived in back then and imagining how people lived back then. Poe and his talents and life are an interesting yet tragic story but important part of literary history. Glad I visited.

Lorraine Powell

Nice to look at history

orlando brown

Cover cost is $5 to visit with souvenirs to purchase. Very small inside I'm 6'2 so it was challenging. There is also a guide to give you the history about the house and Poe' s family.

Margaret Shrager

Informative and enlightening! Everyone should attend! But beware the stairs--they really are scary.

Toni Anderson

I was so excited to see the home that Poe lived in. It still had some of the original furniture and decor which was awesome to see. I always loved his books with his dark poetry. It's worth the drive to check it out. You can also go from there into Baltimore to see his grave. Get directions from the staff at Poe's home.

mroneil2013

Historically speaking I love it

Jodi Rosengrant

Was hoping for so much more. Narrow staircases, no AC, not a great neighborhood. After walking for miles from where we parked, was hoping there would be spots for guests to sit down. No such area. Gift shop very tiny.

Lisa Ellison

Neat little historic building; very interesting to walk around inside with a cute little gift shop where you can pick up a mourning kit, shot glass, calendar, t-shirt, etc.. No bathrooms. Be prepared to get hit up for your change if you decide to walk around the outside of the place, which is in the middle of an old apartment building (projects, I think). Ugly new gentrifying building project across the street might curb that though.

Kenneth Dunkle

While his more popular writings were not penned here, the Poe House captures his life in Baltimore very well. The staff is so knowledgeable and are wonderful story tellers. The steep stairs and small rooms gives rise the claustrophobia of "The Cask of Amontillado". Just standing where he stood feels special.

Anthony Cancel

Amazing to stand on the same ground of a titan in literature. We were actually driving to Florida from NJ and this was a great stop along the way. Right next to I95 and entire stop was 30 mins

Ryan Cobb

Awesome little museum. Cool gift shop too!

Sarah Joyce

First things first, please remember that this is a historic building. It's very small-- for reference, I'm just over 5 foot tall and very thin, and I fit perfectly in the stairways and rooms without having to duck. You may not be so lucky, but you'll probably be alright if your group is small and you are very patient. It's also not fitted with central air, so when it's hot out you may want to avoid going in. They have fans and such scattered throughout, and I'm used to not having AC, so I was comfortable but another person there got a little ill, so be careful. There's no dedicated parking as it is in a residential area, but you can find on-street parking pretty close with low rates (I seriously have never seen parking rates that low) and the meters accept cards. The place is small, as mentioned before, and so there isn't a lot to explore inside-- but the people inside are so knowledgeable that it almost doesn't matter. There are signs on the wall with very detailed information about the area, what it probably looked like when Poe lived there, and neat insights about Poe and his relatives. The gift shop is so sweet, and it's definitely worth the time to visit if you're in the area or a big Poe fan. Best of all, Poe's grave is nearby. It's pretty much walking distance, and it's beautifully kept. Bring some pennies to leave at his tombstone, but be cautious when walking around because the graves aren't all obvious. The details on many of the other stones, particularly some of the farther back ones, are extremely interesting. Also there are some things in the site that are kind of hidden-- tucked under buildings or obscured by bushes and the like. Definitely a good way to follow up a visit to the Poe House.
