REVIEWS OF Ogunquit Museum-American Art IN Maine

Wolfgang Koch

This relatively small museum has plenty of parking, so if parking in Ogunquit during the summer can be a headache overall, it is unlikely that will be the case here. The exhibits are reasonably interesting; and, since I know they vary, any one visit can only tell you so much about the overall quality of exhibits. You may find yourself approached by a docent asking you what you think of a specific piece. (In my case, it was about a certain video installation, which I actually found kind of "underwhelming.") The museum comes with a garden, which is diligently maintained, and includes a couple of interesting sculptures. What I found most impressive, though, was the view of Perkins Cove from the garden. Here are a few sample shots.

The sculptures are terrific and the setting is beautiful! It had fewer works of art than I'd anticipated. But I'd visit again to see the sculpture garden.

Joe Malinowski

A true gem. Received passes from a friend of the family this gear. After a number of summers in Maine where we flew by on Shore Road we stopped to visit. The exhibits we're gripping. Powerful photographs and narratives documenting struggles of the recent and not so recent tlmes. The grounds were meticulously maintained and the views outstanding. Will be sure to return on our next visit.

The Ogunquit Museum is one of the great small museums in the US Northeast, and is a beautiful showcase of the long, rich tradition of significant 19th and 20th century artists who've made the Maine region home or placed it at the center of their work. My wife and I make a visit (or two) a high priority when we visit Ogunquit in the summer, and never fail to come away grateful for the experience. And that's to say nothing of the beautiful setting and view. The shortcomings of a volunteer museum docent or a volunteer desk attendant on a given day can't be written off, but at the same time, the museum experience itself should not be condemned because of that. Otherwise you'd have a heckuva time finding a museum of any stature anywhere in the western world that hits the perfect mark 75% of the time. And if someone's four-year old can do the equivalent of half of it, there's always the other half to enjoy and learn from.

This is a beautiful museum planted on the edge of the sea with gorgeous gardens and fascinating sculptures in the garden. One room inside is devoted to changing exhibits. One room has an exhibit on Hemingway and other authors of the period. The art is generally local but of high quality. You can park there, but you can also follow the trail that leads from downtown Ogunquit that offers wonderful views of the sea. The trail is around a mile I think.

Megan Keough

Davi Smitti

A small museum with a good focus. The grounds are stunning--water views, gardens and statuary...we go at least once a year.

Andrew Lagomarsino

Nice mix of outdoor sculpture and indoor exhibits of photography, water color, marble, paint works by local artists. Old, scowled-faced lady (volunteer?) guarding the marble exhibit is a battle axe Marxist-feminist. She is unintentionally hilarious. Worth going just to experience her hateful, knee-jerk, PC rantings. Great museum store. Visit.

Great exhibits but... so not friendly to anyone who cannot climb endless stairs. as i was bringing my 91 year old dad through the front doors NO ONE helped us. The woman at the door just stood there as I balanced. Never would I recommend anyone going there.

Half of it my 4-year old can do. I don't care about the artist expressing themselves through their phony "art"... just give me excellence, not crap that passes as art.

This is a unique place to experience Art. We stopped here for my consumer to see some amazing art. And he was not disappointed by no means. The curator was kind out going and very professional. She had a wealth of information and knowledge of each piece of art which was displayed though out the gallery. A time to really appreciate great art. Please take your family, loved one or date.

Stumbled upon this gem quite unexpectedly while vacationing in Maine. Four galleries of distinctly unique paintings and sculpture. The works of the 2 currently featured artists spoke to me. The grounds around the museum showcased several beautiful sculptures, each ensconced in its own lovely garden, while still leading you on to the next one, all culminating in a view of the ocean at the back of the museum. We met a wonderful docent who shared insights on the artists and their works. Do not miss this treasure.

A fairly mediocre museum collection that's important just because it's in a small town. One warning, there's a prissy staff member who's really rude to visitors. I wish I knew his name.

Bob Wiles

Very peaceful place

Zach Foote

Great spot for local and not-so-local culture.
