REVIEWS OF Desert of Maine IN Maine

The grounds are beautifully natural. I brought my 3 children ages 3-9 and they loved it. Starting with the natural playground, we found a nice picnic table to enjoy lunch in the shade. Our tour guide Thomas was fantastic. Great with the group in keeping the information short and sweet along with humor! He led the kids to the best spot to search for gemstones which they enjoyed the most! A great experience. We will be back!!

Patrick Thomas

A great historical oddity

Karen Antworth

Lovely campsites nestled in the quiet, private woods! New bathhouse with best showers we've ever had. Complimentary tour of the Desert of Maine was informative and enjoyable with Thomas as our guide! We will definitely be back when we visit the area and the future!

This place is weird but in the best way. Definitely worth the entry fee if you're into ecology and nature as well as history. Staff are super knowledgeable and friendly, DEFINITELY would recommend the bus (?) tour

Matt B

Soft open, full price. Under new management they are in disarray. People loved the tram tour, the walking tour is not the ideal alternative. At the very least, lower the price to explore what amounts to being your backyard and pay extra if you want a guided tour. At least I still have my memories.

Cheryl Larson

Very interesting. Would have been nice if the gift shop was open.

Jennifer Jones

I love the Desert!! Amazing place!!!

Simon Kohnstamm

We absolutely adored traveling to and staying at the Desert of Maine. The grounds were well kept, tenting area spaces were spacious and comfortable, bathrooms excellent and the desert is absolutely beautiful. I would highly recommend this as a weekend outing to anyone interested in having a fun, wholesome weekend with loved ones!

Karen Russell

Very nice campground, we enjoyed it. The new owners are very nice. Restrooms very clean. The whole place was clean. It was a nice get-a-way to camp & close to LL Bean cool desert tours are given too. We wish them the best. If you want a quiet place this it.

This is an interesting stop if you are visiting Maine, but don't make the mistake I did. This is not a state park. This is a private attraction and will cost money to visit.

I went here with my family and my friend. We all thought this place was boring. With the old owners they had a tram ride that bought something to the place but with the new owners they have nothing exciting about it. They need dune buggies or bring back the tram. The old owners had gem finding which the new owners "brought back" They really just scattered 50 cent gems around the desert. So overall the Desert of Maine was boring with many projects going on. If the owners bring back the tram and so dune buggies I might come back.

Pretty disappointing. We went on a hot day assuming it was still a guided tour by buggy. On foot only so we just wondered. Looks like a lot of projects going on but I’m not sure what we paid for. Cafe closed, Museum half way emptied and a petty sad gift shop. No activities like looking for gem stones for the kids. 3 stars just because it is a great price of history. But as for a paid attraction I sadly think this will be our last time visiting. Best of luck to the new owners and the projects going on, whatever they may be.

The Desert of Maine has always fascinated me, even though I spent much of my childhood at the end of Desert Road, less than a mile away. My mother worked there as a teenager and her three siblings were photographed in a donkey cart, which was sold as a postcard in the gift shop for decades.

This place was super cool! It wasn't open when we visited but we still got to see the dunes!

Andrew O'Dell

Really friendly staff.

Nate LaClaire

Fascinating experience! This takes an hour or two to get a guided tour of the dunes and then walk through the nature trail. Whether your interest is historical, geological, or you just need something to do for a short time, it's a great place to check out!

Ruth H Jones

So fun...interesting to hear the history ...we walked the dunes on a cool day...not sure what it would be like on a sunny day. Do take a picture with Sandy

Lynn Tuck

Tour guide was very knowledgeable

Nathan Ralston

I'd like to go back. I didn't really get a chance to explore. It is the first place I have ever seen fungi growing out of ssnd., That was amazing.

Jan Davis

The young couple who have been renovating this campground have done a terrific job! The campsites are level; the campgrounds are quiet. Good value for money with elec and water at the sites. Most sites are small for tents or small campers. There's a nice playground for the kids. The desert is small but fun to walk through and see what nature has done. I've never seen such nice bathrooms, kept spotlessly clean around the clock. They've renovated the barn onsite and had their first concert and barn dance last Sunday night. What a great venue for it!!

Richard Baker

A hidden geological gem. Worth a visit. Kids would really enjoy it

Lisa Pantaleo

Had a great time walking around the desert. It's a one of a kind experience.

David Howatt

I'd heard it was just a big sand pit. It was not. Glad I finally went to see it. An interesting place and very dog-friendly too. I'll go again.

Graham Klein

Great history lesson with a beautiful natural setting. Original barn, still standing! Can take guided, self guided or app guided tour. Gift shop and camping supplies store, dogs welcome on a leash. We took our dog and she loved rolling in the super fine sand. Unique maine experience!

alison winfield

this was, to date, the absolute coolest attraction my family has visited on vacation! our tour guide was knowledgeable, friendly, and hilarious.

Katie Grillo

Such an interesting and unique place. Highly recommend a visit

Under New Management for 2019. The Desert of Maine offers a very interesting landscape and some fun activities for children, such as a play structure and treasure hunting for gems. There's a gift shop and campground on site for overnight stays. It's not a large area to explore, but worth a visit for those who have never been. Currently, Freeport residents can get in for no admission fee, but that may change beginning in 2020.

Donna Horton

Been there previous. Still nice, a little hit off the beaten path. But enjoyable.

Heidi Allen

Very cool. We were looking for a place to camp for the night and arrived at dusk. They were closed for the winter. There was a sign that said it was fine to stay and or look around, but please leave a donation. We had no idea where we were and it was too early for bed so we explored. It was well into dark when we got back to the truck. We had alot of fun using a flashlight doing our little self tour. I would recommend it as a fun stop, especially with kids.

Jacob Stoll

Pretty cool place to visit. Price was a little expensive for what it was.

Joel Kozek

although i was a little skeptical at first, the desert of maine was 100% worth it. the staff really seemed to know information about the land and were eager to answer any and all question! a unique and exciting way to appreciate the natural beauty of maine!!!

brett saltzman

New management and they are super nice. We are very happy we decided to stop by and take the tour.

Janine Lagundzin

It probably would have gotten a higher rating if it was open. Lots of information signs around the sand dunes but I was left with a lot of questions.I found old pictures in the original barn. The barn looked decorated for a wedding or some event.

Rachael Coleman

Attended last performance of the season at the barn. Excellent, Joe Walsh and Finn Magill. Ample parking, great music.

Patrick O'Leary

Exploring a Desert on a very sunny day. Taking my shirt off, going to get sunburnt today. Oh well. The Desert Of Maine is location in Freeport Maine. This used to be a tourist trap. But Now this place is under new management. So now you can do a self guided tours. It’s 10$ a person, and you can walk all around this desert. It’s totally a beautiful place. Everyone should go check it out.

husband and wife

Was fun for the whole family

MB Davidson

Desert of Maine has new owners. They're making it a venue for music and other events. Definitely keep an eye on them.

michael kornmuller

Sand where sand doesn't belong! Guided tour was cool.

Callahan Bryer

Was closed when we got here, but informational signs still made sure I got the picture. Love the scenery, geology, and history of the area and will come again with friends.

Diane O'Hara

The history is amazing. Very knowledgeable staff. Thomas was energetic and informative about the place
