REVIEWS OF Whitney Plantation IN Louisiana

A great plantation tour! We had tour guide Jim Kelly, he was really passionate in sharing his knowledge. He researches as well, to add to the plantation, this man truly is dedicated. Compared to the Oak Alley plantation tour, leaving the Whitney plantation I actually felt like I learned and gained more about its history. I also love that they gave us a souvenir lanyard to keep.

Crissy Bushman

Truly a story that needs to be heard. The tour was so moving. Many things were hard to hear, but it is important to not only hear these stories, you need to learn from them. Being faced with the statues of children in the church nearly caused tears and I was definitely in my feelings. Our tour guide was wonderful. He could compassionately tell this story and answer all of our questions.

Just Me

This can be a hard place to visit. There is a lot of difficult history explored here. The atrocity of Slavery is not a pleasant subject. Some of the tour was kinda hokey, and our tour guide -- who claimed to be a history expert -- did not know as much as I hoped he would. Also, he was pretty arrogant, but I am guessing his arrogance was a product of his youth and inexperience as a guide. Still, I enjoyed it greatly.

Abby Aloni

Only educational, seeing monuments, very little tour through actual plantation structures. NOT for kids

jocelyn williams

I had a great and enlightening experience touring the Whitney plantation. Ali was an informative and exceptional tour guide. He kept the audience interested and engaged. I learned a lot about the history of New Orleans slavery and society.

DeAnna Sanders

Very good information! Our tour guide was excellent!

Elizabeth Ybarra

Extremely informative and humbling. The 1st hour, I simply had tears rolling down my cheeks.

Dee Barbour

The tour guides are very passionate about the history of the plantation(s) around Louisiana not just this one! The plantation itself provides umbrellas and water misters around the property with the visitors and their various health conditions in mind. You can learn so much about the main crops of the South, the history and current circumstances surrounding the experiences that transpired for many with African lineage on this plantation and others. There is a gift shop with restrooms snacks beverages and items from Africa that you can purchase. I was hoping to meet the Professor associated with this plantation however he was not available. There is a beautiful memorial and there are testimonies of adult captives who spent their childhood and young adolescent lives on Plantations. Many of the items and quarters are from the actual historical plantation itself and the guides go into great detail to help you understand how things would have realistically looked in the past. I will go again. You can learn something new each time.

Brianna Hammond

I loved that this museum is based around sharing and honoring the personal stories of the men, women, and children who were apart of slavery and not JUST the owners. Cheri did a fantastic job at guiding us around the plantation and shared LOTS of historical facts and knowledge that are not commonly told or spoken about which I think is very important. It was very informative and respectful and I would most definately recommend this over the other plantations.

Sharon Robinson

This is the most humbling and emotional plantation tour I've ever been on. If you're ever in the area drop by, you want be sorry. It's truly step back into time.

Phil Luqutte

Be prepared to have your emotions stirred. Very well done tour and facility. No holds barred history lesson. A very moving museum.

Dee Deigh

This tour was very educational and informative. I was moved by the artifacts and details relating to African slave trade. Definitely one of my best tour.

Benjamin Krishna

We spent five days in New Orleans, one of them visiting the Whitney Plantation. I wish I had written this review at the time while I still remembered the tour guide's name, as he was incredible. The place was as powerful and emotional as any war memorial I've visited, and we all learned a lot about the history of slavery. Everyone in the area should visit

Lady Michelle

This trip to New Orleans was very special for me. Going to Whitney Plantation was my #1 destination. The vibes walking into this amazing piece of land was incredible. Our tour guide was very well educated on the plantation and also on slavery in a whole. I'm so glad that I got a chance to visit and learn about my ancestors.

cynthia thomas

The experience should have been wonderful, I left as many hurt and confused from the words and attitude of my tour guide . Beautiful place if you have the right tour guide.

Claire White

I've wanted to go to Whitney Plantation since it opened. As a museum professional, I've heard such wonderful things about it, and I was so excited when I had a chance to go this past May. The tour was disappointing. The site prides itself on its honest and eye-opening interpretation about slavery that places individual slaves at the forefront of the narrative. Unfortunately, I did not see or hear that on my tour. The tour guide devoted a full third of the tour to contemplative time reading the many plaques and memorials for slaves. That's fine, and I'm not opposed to memorialization, but I do not go on historical tours to practice group memorializing. And the worst part is that it was sorely lacking a human element. There was a lot of general discussion of the lives slaves endured, but absolutely nothing about the individual slave families who lived on the grounds. What were their work hours? What was the average family size? Were these American-born, African-born, or Caribbean-born individuals? None of those questions were answered by my tour guide. We do not develop empathy by learning about a phenomenon, we develop empathy by learning about the actual minutiae of suffering, but whoever is in charge of the site interpretation and docent training somehow did not impart that information onto their staff. Honestly, the Laura Plantation, which I visited in 2013, does a much better job of contextualizing slavery and making you feel deeply for the horrible conditions and inequity endured by slaves.

LaToya Kimble-Cooper

An amazingly eye opening experience. I highly recommend visiting. If you're in the New Orleans area it's about a hours drive away. The visit to the plantation is well worth it. Purchase your tickets in advance because it sells out. We had an extremely knowledgeable guide, Ali.

V. L. Mason

We visited the Whitney Plantation and Museum on Friday and three days later I am still processing the information. The story is told from the perspective of those who were enslaved on the land. The plantation wasn't a charming little farm, but a land of raw industry cranking out sugar for various products and churning a practically 24/7 operation of pure profit and wealth creation, without the encumberance of labor costs. The life expectancy of a slave held here, 7 years. Today it is hollowed ground beautifully maintained and walkable. The guides bring history to life. A must visit if you are in the New Orleans area. Worth the drive. So incredibly well done.

Stephan Richardson

This place will have you to really think how things where back then.

KK 11

This was by far worth going. Our tour guide was so informative and knowledgeable about the history of the Plantation and history of our enslaved ancestors. It was very emotional. So glad I was able to make the trip

Doran Reed

A must see.... if you go, definitely have Ali as your guide. He was great and explained everything with such depth and detail!

Corey London

Jaw dropping history that I didn't realized happened so close to home. Our tour guide was great. My 13 year old daughter said it was an incredible history lesson.

Adrian Williams

Although slavery and its aftermath are America's greatest sin, the information provided was not sugar-coated but very descriptive of plantation life from a slave's perspective. The inhumanity forced upon other human beings was at times difficult to digest, but history cannot be rewritten.

A Edwards

This is a must see when visiting New Orleans. It is less than an hour away from the city. The drive is easy. Our tour guide was Sidney and she did a wonderful job illustrating the history of the plantation.

Marc Gagnon

Wow! A moving and thought provoking tour! If you haven’t had the opportunity to experience, listen and learn from this tour - would encourage you to do so! Told from the perspective of slaves, it offers a glimpse into the politics, economics and greed which drove, fostered and sustained the slavery trade. Our guide was informative and was able to draw parallels between the past and current socio-economic realities. Be prepared for some raw and emotional stories. Be prepared to learn. Be prepared to question.

Kevin Nesby

Great experience here the tour guide was great and informative and I love all the different areas and stories you can visit on the grounds Best plantation in southern Louisiana

Ian Hubbard

I have visited several plantations and this is one of the best. Very informative museum and great tour. Highly recommended.

Lara Hall

As an historian and museum professional, this is one of the most powerful pieces of history I’ve ever experienced. Ali was an amazing guide and did an awesome job of helping an incredibly diverse, international audience make real connections between the past and present. It’s been two days since our visit and I’m still processing it all. I was impressed by how well the whole tour came together. And I thought the use of the WPA slavery narratives was so well done; they really gave voice to those whose stories are so often overlooked.

Dana McElveen

Absolutely amazing. The history they inform you on is the best. When you visit Louisiana near New Orleans please stop by the Whitney Plantation. You will not be disappointed.

Deborah Doyle

The tour was wonderful and very informative. Our guided was the best.

Richard Bunce

This is a powerful experience - worth the effort to get to, just an hour outside New Orleans, but in a class by itself - skip the plantations that fuss over the furniture and the lifestyle in the big house and go to the Whitney for the history of slavery that you won't find anywhere else. Our guide, Ali, was warm, inclusive and a brilliant explainer. This is less about exhibits and more about the astonishing stories of the people who built the South and the system that controlled them.

Jessica Naquin

This place was awesome our tour guide was Logan and he was awesome we learned so much about the families that lived here as if they were here with us today.

Joslyn Lampkin

My friend and I recently visited Whitney Plantation while on a road trip. It was somewhat claustrophobic driving between sugarcane fields and man-made levees( that we later learned were built by slaves). Upon arrival simply exiting the car was a surreal experience knowing that this is the same earth that the enslaved tread across. The guided tour is approximately ninety minutes long, but we were allowed to join another group for a longer look at certain exhibits. The tour consists of a freeman's church, slave quarters, overseers cottage, a slave holding pen, blacksmith shop, detached kitchen and big house including dovecotes. There are also memorials dedicated to the enslaved, including quotes from some. And one dedicated specifically to children who did not survive infancy. At the visitors center you are free to look around the exhibits housed there. While there learn that through share-chropping people continued to live and work in near slavery conditions until the 1970's. Our tour guide Susan was very knowledgeable about the plantation and although is Caucasian, did not sugar coat or gloss over the horrors of slavery. No one on the tour was made to feel uncomfortable or responsible for slavery. Slavery in America is a HISTORICAL FACT, and it should not be portrayed in a romanticized light! No one thinks of Jews being happy to be at Auschwitz. I came away with a new prospective, and I think that anyone of African descent should make a pilgrimage to Whitney Plantation at least once in their lifetime.

Arthur Doran Reed

Fantastic tour and our guide, Ali, was absolutely amazing! Highly recommended! Friendly staff, nice indoor museum and reasonably priced gift shop!

Alondrya Richardson

Such a beautiful and educational place to visit. Be prepared if you visit. You'll leave with more than you arrived with

Andrea Turner

Such a humbling experience and the tour is told from the Slaves' perspective unlike the other plantation tours. The grounds are beautiful, and our tour guide did a good job.

Imogen C

Our guide Andina was excellent - incredibly knowledgeable and engaging. It was brilliant to have a tour focused on the lives of the enslaved people who lived at the plantation. Harrowing but very important. The whole thing is done very respectfully as a tribute to the enslaved people and the suffering they endured. They also have a lot of both original buildings and replicas to show what the place would have looked like at the time. Would highly recommend to any one looking for a real insight into what life was like at a plantation in that time period.

Anthony Jung

Extremely insightful. Learned a lot about the history of slavery that took place at this plantation and all over the country at the time. A very heavy and well done tour and exhibit that makes you think about our nation's sad past. The tour guides are volunteers and do an amazing job. You get to walk the grounds and see the entire plantation property.

Sonya Braddock

We had an amazing tour guided by Ali. A wealth of information and very engaging. Definitely worth the trip from DC.

Evan Kase

Great guide, deeply meaningful visit and concept. Guess expectations had been raised to expect just a little more.

Brynna Graham

Our guide was fantastic and I loved that he emphasized the importance of education, history, and cultural identity! I really appreciated that the tour relayed the history of the plantation from the slaves' perspectives and believe all plantation tours should be conducted similarly.

Kirk Chantraine

Brilliant tour that is informative and respectful. Our guide had grown up in the area and had been working there something like 20 years. Candid, helpful and brutally honest. It was humbling.

steve tuck

Wonderful experience. Highly knowledgeable tour guide. I woukd go again.

Greg Bailey

This was a great educational tour... I would recommend it for everyone..

Shawna Patterson-Stephens

I am seldom interested in engaging plantation tours because they often fail to capture the magnitude as to why plantations were built in the first place--to enslave and exploit people, Black folks in particular. However, I learned this particular space centered the narratives of slaves and felt compelled to visit. The tour was powerful, painful, and well-constructed; most importantly, the museum that now lives within its walls pays homage to the lives of slaves in a manner that is careful, intentional, and respectful. I highly recommend, and I support their efforts to engage in honest dialogue on a glaring issue that still impacts us today.

Nelson Taylor, Jr.

I wanted to write a the most high praising review for our tour guide Mr. Ali, but as I have discovered, others have so brilliantly conveyed my sentiments about this gentleman. I had the privilege of having Mr. Ali as our tour guide during our family reunion. Mr. Ali provided the most knowledgeable, insightful, and passionate tour I have ever been a part of. He tapped into all ranges of emotions. I am sure that the other tour guides do a fantastic job as well, but Mr. Ali is truly something special! I have recommended this tour to many other people, and you can be assured that it was principally due to Mr. Ali. I am truly grateful to have met him.

Aba Amprofi-Halm

Great service. Our tour guide was incredible. She is full of knowledge and one could tell she loves her job. Very informative and I encourage everyone to pay a visit...it's an eye opener tour.

Everett Knight

I've visited multiple times. Amazing tour and amazing history put into a perspective that doesn't generate hatred but really teaches you how life was for everyone involved. For the best experience please request Ali as your tour guide!

Brent Williams

A great place to visit. Our guide, Harriette did a wonderful job telling the story of slaves and slave children who lived and worked on the plantation. She was knowledgeable about the history of the plantation owners, the authenticity of the artifacts and buildings and had a personal story that was heart warming. If your in NOLA, definitely worth a visit.

Deidra Thomas Richards

Cannot express my gratitude enough that we got to experience the Whitney. Our tour guide was amazing. It was obvious she was passionate about her job and that she put a lot of effort into learning everything she could about the plantation. I appreciate how seriously it was taken and the history that the Whitney provided. I would recommend this tour over any other. Truly and touching and unreal experience.

K. Michael Rowley

Phenomenal plantation tour experience. I’ve visited multiple plantations on my six trips to New Orleans and this one is the best. It provides the most real and accurate portrayal of what plantation life was like for those who lived and worked there. I highly recommend it over Oak Alley or Laura Plantations.

Mini Ellis

A must visit. Our host was passionate and knowledgeable about the history. A great informative and emotional visit.

Denise Duncan

I learned so much. The historian who led the tour Jim Kelley (sp?) was a so knowledgeable and open. This is history we hardly hear, but all should know.

Holly M.

I cannot recommend this enough. I have been to many places and been on lots of tours, but this one may have been the best. Our tour guide, Ali, was exceptional. He explained the history of slavery not only in Louisiana and the USA but on a global scale with excellent story telling skills, depth and poignancy. He offered some historical sociopolitical commentary that really encouraged visitors to think deeply. He was friendly and welcoming while taking his subject seriously, and you could tell he really cared about and believed in the mission of the Whitney Plantation, which is to commemorate slaves and share their history so that it is not to be repeated. The Whitney Plantation is not an intact, preserved plantation but rather an outdoor museum/memorial where buildings have been moved in or reconstructed from other nearby areas. If you want to see a fully intact plantation, Evergreen next door is beautiful but the tour is not to the same high quality. We did both and felt this was a good combination. The grounds of Whitney are beautiful. Our only wish was that we had more time to fully explore the area on our own. Once you complete your 1.5 hour tour, you can read indoor exhibits but are not really encouraged to continue walking the grounds. The really interesting thing about this plantation was that they have worked to preserve and display slave experiences in their own words. They do not hide the horrors of what happened, but also work to explain how slavery was a global, long-running operation with many many parties at blame. They also provide a good look at the history of Louisiana as a whole. This experience left us with lots to think about and the 2 hours we spent here flew by. And the admission cost was very reasonable. I would strongly encourage any families in the area to visit.

Leonel Morals

Love lots of facts real history very memorable Never forget

Amanda McCombs

Very informative! The guide was amazing

Andrea Brown

A very well told truth that needed to be heard.

DeLora Randle

My family and church educated me all of my life about slavery, Jim Crow era, Civil rights movement and their personal life experiences being African American (black) in America. However, when I visited this plantation, I had a surreal experience. I was especially moved by the monuments of the slave names and testimonials. I was brought to tears. I encourage all people to visit this historical site. The restoration was beautiful also.

theniceone06

What an awesome history treat. This is not your "run of the mill" plantation tour. You will learn about the slaves who lived, worked, died and were sold there. Great experience. Shout out to Ali our tour guide for being informed and not afraid to speak the realness and answer the hard questions

Tracy Banks

Very educational and informative. Tugs at your heart. Historical place.

Dapo Iluyomade

The story of the people who created the wealth and prosperity of the Whitney and it's families possible -- their slaves.

Meghan McMahon Johnson

Man! This is one place you must visit. The way the story of plantation life is told, is beautifully tragic. They so masterfully tell the story of how life was for the enslaved. It was heartbreaking but all I could do was listen more intently. I wanted to hear more.... learn more.... experience more. It's a true walk through the life of the enslaved. I'd go back again and again- take my future kids and friends.

Georgia Thurnblad

This was quite an eye opening tour. Very different from what I think of as a plantation. A lot of emphasis placed on who the slaves were and life on a cane plantation.

W.C. Jr McCullars

Rich history. My tour guide, I can't remember her name but she just graduated ... She has so much knowledge.

Nicholas Moeai

Best and most informative plantation tour. It's focus is on slave life throughout the years and is very educational. If you can only do one tour and you interested in learning something, this is it.

Emily Kartchner

Plantation focused on the slave experience. So important to learn this part of our history. Beautiful area, knowledgeable guides, very informative

Chelsea Ebert

Oh man, what a way to kick off our New Orleans trip! Ali was our guide and he was amazing!! Very knowledgeable and passionate about what he does. We got a lot more history and stories here than at Oak Alley, although both were great. It's a sad part of our history but needs to be remembered, and I'm grateful to Ali for sharing his knowledge with us.

Rasmus

This place is a must, any plantation would do. The history and lives shall not be forgotten. The tour were very informative and the place is very beautiful.

Shawn Williams

Imagine setting foot on a plantation and being able to think of anything aside from slavery. A lot of the low star reviews are because there was too much talk of slavery. Shame on anyone who thinks like that.

Tin Nguyen

The entire tour was really educational, our tour guide was the grand daughter of one of former slave at the plantation, so it was pretty cool. Expect to be walking around the plantation learning about history. Overall, its pretty morbid learning about the history of slavery, back in the day.

Yinka B

Visited in August 2018 from the UK . Our guide, Ibrahim was so knowledgeable and really brought the slave experience to life. Very informative trip, worth every penny!

T Johnson

Must visit! The reality of life on a sugar plantation cannot be made pleasant. The story of the African's continents genocide that the world must be shown to prevent it from happening again. I'm going to return. It must be given the proper quiet respect.

Mehret Aberra

The most in depth historical tour I have ever been on. Our tour guide was so knowledgeable. Let us learn to live with love, tolerance and forgiveness

Derek Kearney

Whitney Plantation is simply an amazing and very real experience of what slavery and the plantation business was all about. The details that were laid out to learn the real history of the economic machine slavery was and the extent that the southern region of the United States did all it could to maintain it's economic windfalls from free labor was all so very eye opening. I can share that it is quite emotionally moving and our guide Ali was the best.

Harrison Pinckney

The Plantation and the history is outstanding. However there's a young woman that is one of the ture guys that is extremely rude, abrupt, no manners at all, demeaning, speaks to adults as though they are children, and prideful. Someone ask a question, her reply would be hold on you'll get your little $23.00 dollars worth. In other words the true is worth every penny, however if you get stuck with (Cindy?), get a refund and reschedule. I was there July 20 at 2:30pm.

Ravilan Gabriel

I came here to learn history and this was on point. Our guide Holly was knowledgeable. Do it! For here for history and culture. It show dark past of America and Louisiana itself

fbueltable

My tour was worth every penny to find out more history. Jamie was our tour guide and she is extremely knowledgeable and was patient with all of our questions. Will be visiting again.

Carla Giordani

Very informative. Ali was great!

Seraj Dosenbach

The experience is a must for all Americans as a sobering reflection on the countries past. The stories I heated here and the sights I saw made me appreciate the pain and suffering that a whole population was made to endure. The plantation was well curated to tell the story of the enslaved people on the plantation, a perspective often overlooked or forgotten. This was an experience I will not forget.

Jeanne Barnes

Great tour: informational & educational, family activity. They have umbrellas you can use as you walk the grounds as well as water misters throughout walk

Kristina Parsons

I can't find the words to describe this place! The tour guides are great and knowledgeable! If you want to hear none sugar coated history..come here!

Marielle Peters

Here they tell the real complete story of the plantations. A very special moment, a good lecture a passionate guide with historical knowledge! Our most intense experience in America.

Daniel Gormley

Visiting baton rouge, we stopped at a few plantations. This is the one to visit. From the visitor center to the guided tour by an excellent well informed guide, this place offers great insight into the lives of people nearly forgotten and too long ignored. Don't miss it, you owe it to yourself and to them. I promise you will learn a great deal, whether you're already a scholar or don't know much at all, this is a must see place to understand America and Louisiana.

Anissa

Absolutely phenomenal experience! It was a thought-provoking and informative tour that I will never forget. Ali, our tour guide, was so passionate and knowledgeable about the grounds. A true plantation tour that gives you the hard-to-swallow truth about slavery and so much more.

Joanne Haskins

Going to the Whitney Plantation was a very educational and emotional experience for me and the family. Our tour guide gave us a lot of information, and he was very detailed and well spoken. Great spot to take your children

Thomas Lichty

Absolutely phenomenal. A vital piece of American history that everyone should experience. They strive to educate and encourage community growth: two things I can get behind wholeheartedly.

Nicole Wood

Loved the guided tour. Wished that I had more time to explore. Will go back and explore on my own.

Heather Clancy

Our tour guide, Ali, was knowledgeable and engaging. The museum and tour were a breath of fresh air when it comes to historical interpretation of slavery. The content was definitely intense - I would save this visit for students fifth grade or older.

Kenan Jugo

This plantation and its story is an overwhelming experience. The tour guide was magnificent in the way he compared life today to the way slavery was. Go to Whitney plantation when you get the opportunity because it will certainly touch you and you go from there richer than you arrived

Eva Moore

What an amazing experience. Our tour guide was awesome, so knowledgeable and friendly. I feel like I learned more in this 90 minutes than I ever did in school.

Gloria Maddox

Good history of slavery in New Orleans, got a chance to see and enter some of the houses. Very nice "memorials" of some of the slaves they were able to find records of, to include one especially for the children. A must see if you're down in New Orleans.

Matthew Cloke

Would not recommend. Tour was all about how hard it was for the slaves and how hard done by they were. They for get how hard it was for most poor people in those days anywhere in the world. Go somewhere different if you want to experience a plantation tour.

Susan Williams

Great tour guide who really knew his history and the plantation enslaved the workers. Highly recommend..very important to educate people on what happened during this period. However as you can only go inside on a tour there was not enough time to read all the quotations on the memorial wall. We really wanted to soak them up

Jennie Hedrick

A must see/do tour for anyone interested in the real history of New Orleans.

Chishimba Simutowe

By far the best and honest representation of the slave narrative. But be warned. This plantation tour is very uncomfortable. It's a tour that depicts a very important part of American history. I've met a lot of people who walked away from this tour angry. Claiming that their vacation was ruined because what was said during the tour was unpleasant. Well, there's nothing pleasant about this part of American history. Our tour guide Shirley is a local who grew up a few miles from the plantation so she was able to share some insight into what life for slaves was like. You'll leave this place with a heavy heart and but hopefully you'll also walk away with compassion.

James Morris

A truly eye opening experance. Thoroughly educational and vee well run.

Myra Stuart

We took a tour of the Whitney Plantation during our trip to New Orleans. It was an amazing place with so much history. This plantation is dedicated to honoring the slaves. The information they give you is from the slaves perspective. Our tour guide was excellent. He really took his time and made the plantation come alive for us. After your visit to the Whitney plantation or before if you have the time make sure and stop at the Fee-Fo-Lay cafe. It is just 1.5 miles from the planation. Best beignets and T-cakes ever!

Tina Edwards

Very enlightening from a child's mind. I recommend everyONE visit this site!!! Thank you Brian from Cresent Tours for taking us at the last minute!!!

Stacey Delight

We were blessed by the universe with our tour guide Cheryl. While there are more than enough books, documentaries and movies that depict what slavery was, there is a stronger level of sensitivity when standing on the grounds. As a woman of African descent and from Louisiana, visiting Plantations isn't "something to do" for fun. The presentation was extremely truthful which typically hurts depending on what side of history you're on. We were able to visit all of the plantation grounds and encouraged to take pictures and ask as many questions as possible. The grounds are preserved extremely well. The acknowledgment of the fact that America was built on the backs of slaves and the emphasis placed on the children (they have no light in their eyes as children should) at this plantation was appreciated. What I appreciated the most is that the tour focuses on the facts vs guests level of comfort taking the tour. There was no misleading illusions that slaves were "workers" that had a decent life as many other plantation tours suggest. Cheryl I'm not sure what the future looks like at Whitney Plantation but I'm certainly happy that I visited when I did and that I had the pleasure of experiencing you as my guide. Thank you.

Vin Man

The Whitney is a must see of one has the time while visiting New Orleans. The presentation is from the perspective of those held as enslaved on the industrial complex of this former sugar plantation. Their seven year life expectancy at Whitney and surrounding plantations helped fuel the requirement for the contiunued resource of human chattel. 45 min from New Orleans. Fantastic.

Jessica Monette

Great place for EVERYONE to learn the true history of this country. A must see! Great selection of books in the gift shop as well.

Emilie Abblard

It's the one plantation tour that narrates exclusively the history of slavery. Our guide was excellent, knowledgeable and inspirational. The grounds are superb and the memorials very moving.

Crystal

Came here really expecting a much better experience based on reviews. Maybe I had set the bar too high but I was so disappointed in our tour. It began by walking to the church, which was moved there and not original to the plantation, watched a short movie. Then walked over to see a couple of memorial walls. Our guide told us two very short stories relating to names on the walls. No other info provided other than 2 quick stories. We looked at the slave quarters which again were a couple rows of houses that were moved to property and not original. Then went to the big house which you can only view the downstairs. When other guests about how the slaves were treated and for further details our guide simply stated "bad. They were treated real bad." Now while gory details weren't necessary I think we were all expecting a bit more. Or at least a better history of that exact plantation. It was just disappointing overall. I certainly didnt have the deep moving experience others have expressed in their reviews as we got no information other than what we already know. Hopefully the guide was just having an off day but I felt pretty jipped as I could have walked around and viewed the grounds without her and left with just as much insight.

Firefly Princess

All I can say was This place was an amazing Humbling experience! Pls go! Pls pls please go!

carole jolicoeur

A must see! I didn't leave feeling angry. Well done. Do the legacy tour. Tour guide was great; forgot her name but she has family link to the plantation.

ted pederson

We recommend everyone to see Whitney Plantation, Our guide (Ali?) was unbelievable. So knowledgeable and sincere. Could have listened for hours and hours. Best plantation tour there is. A highlight of our trip

Vikzul X

Good amount of time spent walking around and looking at the various items within the plantation. Viewing is mostly from the slave perspective which is informative.

Stephanie Lamphere

Incredible and moving experience. The tour guides are very knowledgeable and capable and really bring history to life. So thankful to have had the opportunity to visit and learn.

Shannon Guerra

One of the best Plantation Tours that I have ever been on. Our guide was very knowledgeable and kept us engaged. It was a hot day and we were given umbrellas! Please go and visit when you are in the New Orleans area!

Ylanda Lindsey

I loved the historical tour and the information that was given. It was an enlightening experience about the lives of slaves that resided in the area during that time period.

Joseph Connor

Very moving and educating experience. Well presented and informative. Moves at a steady but leisurely pace that allows for periods of rest and relief in the heat. Very well spoken guide.

Dwight Leblanc

Hi,today was my second time visiting Whitney and I must say I'm even more impressed with the entire tour.I intend to keep coming back each time bringing with me another family member or friend.Today at the 12:15 PM tour our tour guide was so impressive with her Knowledge of history and her delivery was excellent.Thank you for the umbrellas in the hot southern summers. My only suggestion would be if u could have a free standing cooler set up at the middle of the tour where there is cold bottled water to keep your valued customers not only appreciated but safe as we visit your historical site. Thanks to all for a job well done!

Laura Torres

Best plantation tour for accurate facts and hard truth.

Stacey King

A truly eye opening, incredible experience. A necessary experience for us all. Visiting other plantations afterwards that emphasized only the experiences of the white slave owners felt wrong after this.

Yolanda Hill

Whitney Plantation tour will not disappointed you! If you in New Orleans please try to attend this tour. You will have time to look around more after your tour is over. You can't do social transportation from the location. Gray Line tour is a great option for transportation there and back.

The Whitney Plantation was one of the highlights of our family roadtrip. I haven't been to a ton of Plantation but from research that I've done, their tour seems to be on of the realest and most transparent tours that you could go on in the southern US. There's a lot of truth to learn here for both children and adults.

Sue Smith

Absolutely wonderful..The tour focused on the economics of slavery. A lot to think about. Beautiful grounds and great bookstore. Don't miss.

It was an excellent experience!! The tour guide was extremely educated on the horrors of slavery on that land. He was welcoming and very nice. I'll tell everyone I know to come visit at least once in their lifetime.

Sandra Elliot

We were so grateful for the experience of this tour and the information our guide brought to our group. A sad and painful reminder of what has passed and what could be again if we are not respectful of one another. Thank the heavens that this group is willing to go to the dark places rather than simply show us the surface stuff, like architecture and trees. These places are still speaking to us and it is important we listen. I highly recommend this tour.

Andrew Riddle

James, our guide and historian was awesome. He was easy to converse with and had a solid insight to the treatment of the Creole from before, during and after the emancipation.

We drove to the Whitney Plantation from New Orleans, which took about an hour. Once we arrived, staff greeted us warmly. The reception area features a small gallery with important historical background, which one can stroll and read on their own. We followed our tour guide Sydney, who is super charming, knowledgeable, passionate, and friendly. Her explanation greatly facilitated our experience and understanding of the Plantation and the history of the area called German Coast. Sydney guided our group through the major landmarks on the Plantation at a comfortable pace and left plenty time for us to explore the site after on our own. The facilities on the Plantation are well-maintained, which gave us a rough idea of how hard and harsh life on a plantation could have been back in the day especially under the grilling August sun. We want to thank all the staff, particularly Sydney, for their excellent work and for providing us with such a profound experience!

Eddie Majors

A real eye opener. The tour was excellent. Really makes you think about the evolution of this country and how far it still has to go. Our ancestors didn't deserve to be treated that way.

Courtney Fadis

The Whitney is the only plantation tour in Louisiana focused exclusively on the lives of the enslaved. Every person withing the African diaspora should come here. I cry for my ancestors. Seeing where they lived is a heartwrenching yet vital experience.

Noelle Pike

Wow! This is so worth the money. Such an amazing experience to understand the history of the south.

Nicole Burt

Very emotional but definitely worth the visit. Put it to the top of your list

Erica Hollins

I enjoyed the tour of Whitney Plantation I will visit again with my grandkids. The tour guide was very knowledgeable .

Richard Smith

The guide was so knowledgeable and engaging that I wanted to record it and replay it. He was remarkable and that made the visit so captivating. This was an education on the history of slavery in early Louisiana on Whitney. Great visit.

Emma R.R.

This is one of the best tours I've ever been on! It is extremely impact and educational, all the guides are very knowledgeable and can answer your questions. My first time going with Ali, and he was absolutely amazing. The second year going I had a woman who was also amazing, unfortunately I dont remember her name. I've gone on other plantation tours after this however they usually focus on the slavers, rather than the people who were enslaved, mistreated, and often burried on the plantation. I cant go to any other tours at other plantations, none of them will be this good!

Vanessa Bryant

My experience here was very touching! Lots of history here. We learned a lot and was glad we went! Surreal experience!

Josh O'Keefe

Beautiful property but you HAVE to get a 90 minute guided tour. Would be nice to have the option to just walk around like almost every other plantation. When you see so many in a day you won’t have time to do all the tours. However, this is the place to get the tour or Oak Alley.

Nicole Lash

This is a lovely piece of history. The tour guides are packed full of knowledge and information. My only thing is that the tour runs almost 2 hours and we were on a tight schedule with the tour group and ended up only having an hour at our next stop.

betty simpson

The tour was very organized and very informative, it was a lot of walking but they included rest stops , some with a mist to cool you off ( I thought is was awesome that they thought to do that). The tour guide was very knowledgeable about the history of the plantation.

Samantha Hughes

Ali is extremely knowledgable and passionate! It is in your best interest to have him conduct your tour.

Michael Wolfe

This is the first plantation tour I have visited that focuses on the slave narrative. It is excellent and helps all visitors understand the harshness of sugar cane slavery combined with international slave trade. Highly recommended.

Graham Finlay

Not a typical tour as it focuses on the awful experiences of the slaves but very good and worth a visit. The tour guide was great but more investment is needed in the plantation itself and hopefully will come in time. There was limited access to the old house which was a little disappointing.

doris lapoint

Will recommend this plantation to anyone. My husband, our 4 kids and I visited the whitney over the weekend. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable of the history, and answered all our questions. The only small downside was that it was a little expensive for our family of 6. Definitely not too bad to get in, but was a little more than we had expected or anticipated to pay. So we couldn't tour as many plantations as we intended to do. But I'm glad we visited this one.

angela chesnutt

This place is emotionally gripping! The figures placed throughout bring the history to life. I will go again one day. If you love history, you must come here!

Erez Zevulunov

Amazing history lesson and reflection. A little out there. The bus ride was hard to get to but it was worth the trip. Amazing lessons and visuals. Great people work there. A must if you are going to NOLA.

Faith Lew

Questioned whether I could emotionally handle this. So glad I didn't back out. Very moving and can't describe in words the experience. The staff were great and our hostess or guide was so knowledgeable and graceful in pulling us into the experience. My only recommendation is to go early instead of late. It's so much to take in. I just want to sit longer in the chapel or under the live oak for reflection, prayer and stillness. No fault of the plantation but only a recommendation for those that go in future. Very moved by the varied ethnicities visiting; young and old. An extremely significant narrative to American history.

Matthew Smith

Amazing. I'm a huge history buff, but there is so much I learned about the lives of the slaves who worked and died in the Louisiana swamps. I highly recommend visiting.

Ida-Johanna Lundqvist

Such an important place to visit, this is what everyone should learn about in history class. Amazing, well-informed guides who are not afraid to answer hard questions. The tour is super organized and interesting although of course heartbreaking. Bought several great quality books from their shop. Would recommend this to anyone living in the US or traveling through.

Sebastien Tanguay

I would’ve loved to visit this plantation, however we got turned away because they were « sold out ». They favour selling all their tickets to tour groups who bring tourists there by the buss load. It was an interesting fact that I couldn’t visit the place for 23$ if I drove up there on my own, but I could’ve gotten in if I had gone with a tour group for 59$... we ended up going to see Oak Alley Plantation down the road instead and had a really good time.

Barbara Malbrue

It was a sobering but informative visit. The plantation is based on the life of the slaves not the owners. It is something all teens who are connected to their cell phones and electronic devices should see. Life was not instant back then and life was harder than they can possibly conceive. Our guide was very informative and the property is well maintained. The tour takes about 90 minutes and there is some walking for those who might need assistance. Well worth the drive.

Cornel Peters

We visited on June 21st 2019. It was pretty good but I didn't understand why they didn't show us the memorial for the 1811 revolt. They put heads on stakes all down the river as a warning to other slaves and we had to ask about it. We checked it out after the tour and it was very impactful.

Cheryl Wells

Ali, our tour guide, was awesome. I love the way he made his presentation. Whitney Plantation is a great place to visit. I highly recommend it for the education of slave life on a plantation.

Naree Viner

Not at all your typical plantation tour, the Whitney Plantation tells the truly compelling story of the enslaved people who facilitated all aspects of life on the plantation. Our guide Danielle was knowledgeable and presented a complex history in an accessible manner. Make the trip out to experience this for yourself. I took a Gray Line tour; Huey our guide and Reggie our driver, were both good-humored and professional.

Jay Crumble

American History happened on this plantation. The artifacts are chilling. The stories are real. To tour the grounds is a eye opening experience.

RMS Michael

Very nice for groups! Organized and fascinating!

G W

A wonderful old plantation chock-full of history since its building and of the surrounding land. Terrific photographic opportunities abound throughout this entire plantation. If visiting New Orleans, this is definitely a must visit. Highly recommend!

wigster25

Unbelievably touching experience. Very well presented and the tour guides are so knowledgable and passionate about what they're doing. Cant recommend highly enough.

London

I recommend everyone to attend this tour. It's nice because it also exclusively focuses on the lives of enslaved people. It was very informative and everyone can benefit from attending this.

L Smith

There's no way to describe the value of taking this tour. The grounds are very well-kept and the tour guides are knowledgeable and have a deep respect for their responsibility to speak for those whose stories they tell. I took pics but left with such a great sense of the sanctity of the grounds that I feel they're too sacred to post. A visit should be on the to-do list of anyone who seeks truth and believes that with truth, there is wisdom.

LB

Of the various plantations in the area, I urge you to visit Whitney. To have the emphasis placed on the plight of the slaves rather than a tour that parades the grand home and/or lives of the slave owners makes Whitney an essential and important site of memory to visit. A special note to the guide who showed us around; she did not shy away from the difficult points of such a tour or shirk awkward questions. As an "attraction", if it's appropriate to call it that, it is very well laid out and visitor friendly.

Tegan Fellows

Loved the tour round this place, the guide was knowledgeable and it was amazing to be soaking in such rich but harrowing history

Corey Doyle

Very eye opening (educational). I would recommend this tour to anyone interested in history or slavery. Ali was excellent

Lauren Washington

Very informational. Our guide was very knowledgeable about both New Orleans and the plantation itself. This is not a great place to bring kids though, especially in the hotter months. They provide you with umbrellas to block the sun, but it still gets really hot and there are no bathrooms throughout the tour. However, it's an important piece of history and all the locals say they bring all of their visiting friends and family, so it is definitely worth it. As long as you're ready to reflect internally and learn, this is a great opportunity for something different during a visit.

Ravyn Williams

A really great place to learn about the lifestyle amd history of Louisiana slavery history. Some of the exhibits are indoors and outside so prepare for the heat. There is also a nice gift shop and mini museum.
