Great trip. Get a ticket for free next door and then wait for a nice tour.
Very well restored. The woman who was our tour guide said she'd been studying about Mary Lincoln and would give us a "different" tour then the usual. It focused on Mary Lincoln. Her role as a support to her husband and as a keeper of the house. It was a wonderful point of view that was not expressed at any of the other places we visited. So it was not a repeat of other information we received. I commend her and recommend this tour.
The tour was very short and informative and there is thankfully AC inside the house
Love history, the way they are keeping it here is amazing, it isn't just the home, it's the whole neighborhood.
The Lincoln Home and the surrounding area is brilliant. Hats off to the National Park Service they have done a spectacular job of restoring and saving a real national treasure. The home tour is short, about 20 minutes, but full of insight into Lincolns life prior to his presidency. And the audio tour of the area uses cellphone technology instead of headsets or push to listen recordings. Great for historical insight into America and incredible stuff if your a Lincoln fan.
My 8 yr old son loved this educational visit to Springfield!
They've made a little village of restored homes to surround the Lincoln home. Gives it a charming, and yet sacred ambiance. There's a gift shop to help support the place. Free admission to Lincoln's home thanks to a stipulation of Robert Lincoln to always allow free entrance. Free short tours (10-15 mins). Our tour guide says they give longer tours in winter, because there are less people. The tour guides I met are very passionate and knowledgeable about Lincoln and have read many biographies on his precious life. When you do something good for all people, along with living a private life of honesty and integrity, you are remembered forever- to the latest generation. ♥️
When in Springfield, you have to do all of the Lincoln sites! This one is a nice way to see how the Lincoln family lived, before moving to DC. The home is lovely, and they did a great job restoring it. Our tour guide was knowledgeable and seemed to really enjoy his work. It was also nice to set a few people dressed in garb from Lincoln's time period.
The home tour was short and sweet, and there were a few other people dressed for the period sharing historical stories in the area around the home. Several of the surrounding homes have interesting stories as well.
It was very interesting. I was there when I was 12 for a field trip outing for the graduating class of John Mills School. Class of 1955.
Former President Abraham Lincoln's house & his neighborhood. This neighborhood is kept to it's original state. A beautiful place!
Wonderful exhibits! Fantastic museum!
We got here just after 5pm, so tour of Lincoln Home was closed. Interesting to tour about outside.
This is another beautifully done National Park, a real treasure! Our tour was only of Lincoln's home where he raised his family before his election to the presidency. We were left to explore on our own the rest of the homes and streets, which was fine. Our guide was great, she admitted to being a Lincoln nerd :,-) since eight years old! We chose to park very close to the visitor center. Also, we chose not to walk around the area, like to the Lincoln library. This is because the city seems to turn a blind eye to the large number of people loitering in this area.
We were driving through Springfield and decided to stop. Totally worth it. You can find working for free nearby or simply pay the measly $2 to the park service. The rangers are all delightful. So educational, not just about Lincoln but about restoring old neighborhoods in general. Can be short, can be long, either way this was a delight to see.
I went with a school group. You must have a guide and the guides are very good. The house has an interesting floor plan. I didn't realize how wealthy the family was until I saw this house. Interesting slice of life before the civil war.
The only negative to our visit here was the fact we got there after hours and the visit was short. I'm giving it five stars, because it was much more than we expected as the entire street where Lincoln lived is part of this historic site. We were also a bit overwhelmed at the sense of importance of this spot in the middle of downtown Springfield. Interpretive markers throughout the neighborhood really help you learn about not only Lincoln's home, but also the history of his neighbors.
Thrilling "contact" with our greatest president.
My wife need to go back can take it all in one day . It us a very important place to visit
Incredible place - should be on everyones bucket list
A great place of history. The tour was very fun and informative. Props to the NPS
This is an awesome place to visit. We visited here on the day of 4th of July, US independence day. It was such a great feeling. Got so much information about Lincoln’s Home and that historic period. The home is maintained very well. There’s a separate visitor center too. Parking space is also available or we can also park on the roadside parking places. We took a stroll around the area too. Many nearby houses are preserved exactly the way they used to be in old times. The area is fairly quiet and peaceful. We really loved our visit.
It gets five stars. The city of Springfield, Illinois capitol, should be in better shape. It has the potential, however it is just bleh. No soul. No feelings of inspiration. The little section of Lincoln's old neighborhood is a serene little pocket of history tucked away inside Springfield. You can't help but want to read a book of Lincoln's life.
We had an amazing and knowledgeable tour guide!!! Walking through the house and listening to her tell you the stories almost made you feel like you were going back in time... to see the way they lived, the elegance of the home and the furniture... I was moved!!! Mary Lincoln's bedroom had her original commode!!! A lot of the furniture is the original furniture that the Lincoln's used... you could almost see them, I fell in love with the home. The kitchen although small, was very beautiful. I love it so much I plan on going again.
Very interesting site in the history and many things to learn from Abraham Lincoln!
Great tour, wonderful history, really great preservation and set up with other old homes around it
Free! Go in the morning to reserve your tour, I am told it fills up. Very well done. The tour guide super informative, although perhaps she had a little bit too much coffee that morning. Did I mention.. FREE! Also, more than just one house, but a little neighborhood that was representative of that period.
Enjoyed free tour of Lincolns home. Have to go to visitor center to get tickets. Then go on guided tour. Our tour guide decided to focus on Mary versus Abe and we learned some interesting facts about Mary. Was a nice tour
Staff was great, our tour guide was very informative as well as entertaining
Well-maintained and informative tours are given. You need to check in at the visitor center to reserve a Time and probably will have to wait up to an hour, however there are movies at The Visitor Center to watch.
Wonderful experience with a great tour guide. Tour was paced well with nice snippets of history.
Loved the home and entire area where Lincoln worked and walked and lived.
This was a great tour, and it was amazing to be able to go through Lincoln's home.
Love history, love Lincoln. Our tour guide was knowledgeable and full of quips. Kept it interesting and moving for all ages. If kids are studying Lincoln this is a good way to connect with history. A step back in time, his actual belongings and personal life.
Beautiful! Super cool interactive board inside with info and lights to show different things around the town. Will return for tour(it was full for the day)! A neat experience to walk around and see what it was like back then!
Cool place. Could be a lot better though. Let's be able to go into more houses. Have some actors walking around.
It's a very well preserved part of our important past. Structurally, the home is 80% original. There are numerous original Lincoln artifacts contained here as well. The 10-15 minute tour is not wheel chair / handicap friendly. It's a very old building, so there are narrow halls, and stairs. You can learn a lot about the man, and his family, and their life before becoming President. If you enjoy history to any degree, you will love this.
It was amazing! Being in the very house the Lincoln's lived and loved. Also, the tour guide was knowledgeable and gave lots of personal stories about the Lincoln's. I loved it!
Love this beautiful historical home. Anyone who loves history will definitely enjoy this place. Those wooden pedestrian street and the sand filled old streets are so beautiful and preserved really well. Also, you will see more old houses and other things that are preserved here. My husband and I both loved it so much when we visited it in May and I took my parents last weekend. They also enjoyed it even though it was super hot
The four block area around Mary and Abraham Lincoln's home has been preserved as it was the 1850s and 60s. It was a good place to learn about their life before Washington DC. You could wander the streets which we did with our dogs. It made it a real fun outing.
It was really nice to see some of the original furniture pieces. It was really educational for the kids. The rangers we're nice and informational. Great activity for the kids and adults. Rangers even let the couple of the kids help lock up Lincolns home. A cool story before school starts.
Well managed by park rangers. Staff very good.
Always great! Passed on this time to the 6th generation: Those who truly KNEW & loved Abraham Lincoln--in Postville & Lincoln, IL!!!
A good place to visit. Very well managed. The Ranger guided tour is plus point and it's completely free.
Interesting piece of history in central Springfield convenient and family friendly.
We I go there I really feel presence and followed his steps
Free place to visit makes it an excellent choice of things to do in the area. Lincoln family home is such a treasured historical place. Walking on the same steps, streets and holding the same handrails as Abraham Lincoln was an awesome experience!
Enjoyable & Free We were with a tour to see Lincolns Home...it was wonderful, informative and interesting for all ages. The only drawback was the park was very busy that day (Friday 1:00 ) so it was cramped at times in the Lincoln Home. You can also stroll the 4 block area to see how Abe & his family grew and lived. They have people dressed up in the ERA who were helpful answering questions. Well restored and clean. They also have a gift shop.
Sssooo....much very interesting history! Need at least an hour here and free! Or a small donation.
Clean and the park rangers giving the tours were friendly and very informative.
Wonderful place to tour and it's free. Four City blocks.
Was nice feeling to stand in same house Abrham Lincoln lived. Recommended visit.
A great way to spend the day with children.
Interesting place. Has many historical facts. Has family activities in September.
Very interesting. One more off the bucket list
Wonderful tour of the only home Abraham Lincoln ever owned. Surrounded by his period restored neighborhood.
Loved this place!! Loved the block loved the tour guide John.
I regret not getting our guide to say her name again but she was fantastic. You get to tour the house President Lincoln lived in before he was our president, which is amazing to me. You can also tour two other houses. Everyone was nice and they let us pay for our parking after our tour so we wouldn't miss anything. They take small groups every 10-15 min. It took about an hour to do all three houses. If you have trouble navigating steps it might not be a good fit. Half of the tour is on the second level. Overall I would highly recommend.
Such a wonderful experience. Everyone should check it out when I passing through. And the tour through Lincoln's home is free Peeps! So no excuse not to take a look. And there's other homes etc. to walk through free also. Can't beat Free!
Very interesting walk through history. Beautifully maintained to fully show the era during which President Lincoln lived in Springfield, IL.
The "free" tour was great. Our Ranger was knowledgable and took us through the rooms in the house. The preservation of the neighborhood takes you back in time.
This is a wonderful example of the commitment of the National Park Service to preserve national historic sites. This Historical Site includes not only Lincoln's Springfield Home (with free tours all day!) but the entire 2 block radius around his home. You can tour 2 other homes and walk the streets. There is a free audio guide via your cell phone and a wonderful visitor center showing 2 movies about Abraham Lincoln and his time in Springfield. My girls immediately picked up Junior Ranger books and completed the activities. There are great covered picnic tables. Parking is $2/hour. We stayed 3 hours. Note: if you are interested in Lincoln's time in office in Washington, you will NOT get that here. This site focuses in Lincoln's time in Springfield. Most tours/movies/audio guides end as Lincoln leaves Springfield on a train.
Fun to stand and walk where Lincoln walked. See things he saw. The Park Rangers do a great job bringing you back in time. Ranger Jessica is full of energetic stories.
Nice tour of lincolns home with knowledgable guide .short enough to keep interest of children .also free of charge which is always nice !
The National Park rangers are very informative and entertaining during tours. This was our favorite stop in Springfield!
A walk through history. Ranger talk/guide as usual was very informative. Makes me glad to be in the 21st century
The unique thing about this place is that they preserved the neighborhood around the home, not just the home. So within the city of Springfield, you're able to step back in time and be surrounded by life in the 1800s. This is a fun place to either learn about Lincoln or just sit and relax and have your lunch.
Springfield might be a tad Lincoln obsessed, but that makes perfect sense. Absolutely loved learning a bit more about the home life of Abraham Lincoln. Our tour guide was particularly informative and happy to answer questions from the group. Definitely a worthwhile stop!
Absolutely fabulous setting, and the ranger who gave the tour was an amazing speaker and guide!
A must if you are a Lincoln fan. Other Lincoln attractions nearby so you can spend a day here. Don't forget to visit his tomb and museum.
Very knowledgeable tour guides. Polite, professional and informative
I love how history is being preserved and this great man is being honored.
Wonderfully preserved if you're a Lincoln fan you got to go here that's all there is to it
Mid-day, during the week seems to be the best time to go. However, if you go on a Wednesday, you can also tour the Elijah Isles house. The Lincoln site is open all week long, but the Isles house is only open Wednesday and Saturday for short hours.
Wonderful. Could touch the very handrails Lincoln used daily. Free tours, parking has a cost but you can park on the street. Easy pace. Great restaurant across the street, Carriage Co. Restaurant.
Beautiful historic site! I love that the whole block surrounding Lincoln's home is preserved as a historical site as well. You really get a feel for Lincoln's life and I'm glad the park continues the promise that tours of the home will be free.
The tour was full when i went there. However the house is well kept and in great condition. In national park area it feel safe and clean
Only had a few mi minutes there. Would have loved to have more time & take the tour.
Enjoyed the tour. I'm very interested on history.
The tour was excellent and there is a wonderful 4 block area of restored homes from the period that creates a broader view of the community Lincoln lived in.
Great place for a field trip!
Was a lot more enjoyable than I had anticipated. Highly recommend
Great place and we're going back!
So this place of course is on my list of places to see while in Springfield. This is the home of Abraham Lincoln and you gotta see it. The guides are all friendly and very knowledgeable when it comes to facts of the Lincoln family. They will more than likely tell you that while walking up the stairs hold the railing and that will be the closest you will come to shaking hands with Mr. Lincoln himself. Definitely check out this place. You need ticket which are free but I recommend at least getting the tickets 30 to 40 mins before you wish to go. They have a visitor's center where you get the tickets as well as some stuff you can check out while you wait. My wife and I usually get the 1.5 hours ahead then go eat lunch and then come back. Any questions just ask!
Great history! Most of the furnishings are original. Plus they have a whole block preserved from the time period.
It is just like the original Lincoln Home it is beautiful I love it, a walk back down history Lane
I always enjoy coming here. It's a great way to fill an afternoon. I live in Springfield and so I don't have to travel far to get here but even if you do its worth it. Very interesting and the workers tend to really know their stuff.
Beautiful! The Ranger who led our tour was super knowledgeable and answered all our questions! Great stop if you enjoy learning about our nation's history.
This is a great place to go back in history
Only $2 for parking. Lovely tour! The guide knew a lot of facts.
Fascinating, historical, educational. I was surreal to walk where President Lincoln walked.
I've been on this tour twice. Once with my sister and my father who was in a wheelchair. So yes it is handicap accessible. The next time I was there with my sister niece and my other sister who was in a wheelchair. It is a very nice place. Elegant yet simple. Interesting to see where the Lincoln's lived and raised their boys before going to the White House. I love the wooden sidewalks in this area. But I have the idea that things were going on in other homes in this historic district that we really had no idea of and were much more technologically enabled then what they looked like from the outside.
This is a great park site. The actors portraying President Lincoln and Mrs Lincoln were really fantastic. The tour of Lincoln's home and neighborhood was very interesting as well.
Stopped here on the way back from AL to Schaumburg IL. We really enjoyed ourselves. The tour was interesting and informative. I suggest giving yourself a few hours at least as I didn’t realize it was a whole neighborhood with many, many homes and artifacts. We didn’t have much time as we came late in the day. We will definitely come back with more time to spare.
Abraham Lincoln is by far the best POTUS methinks and I love him! This site shows how he lived as a regular citizen before he became a politician. Before his triumph as a lawmaker, he had struggles here including the tragic death of one of his sons. Take the tour of this historic place and you will learn more about this great individual.
Great president and leader. Amazing to walk the halls and experience a snapshot back in time. This is a must see destination for all.
It's been 33 years, but I returned. This time with my wife, Sally and son Brice. Sally wasn't around back then and Brice wasn't born (yet). It's the same peaceful relaxing throw back to life in the early to mid 1830s.
Great atmosphere and super well maintained. This is an excellent stop for all ages.
We had a fun 1-2 hours here and learned some new facts about Lincoln even without taking the tour. Tour of Lincoln's home is free but when we arrived the next available tour was 2 hours away and we didn't want to wait as we needed to get back on the road. Although we had such an enjoyable afternoon we ended up spending so much time in the area we could have done the tour anyway! We toured the other buildings you don't need a tour ticket for. The area is like 2 blocks of pedestrian only area with 10-12 preserved buildings including Lincoln's home. You can do a self guided tour of 2 of them. Gift shop and bathrooms on site. Parking is available on site for $2 per hour in the honor system.
Piece of history that is not boring and wouldn't take all day.
We had a good time seeing Lincoln's home and the surrounding area. Wish they made the tour groups a little smaller as not everyone could see the rooms while the guide was speaking. Tip: do not watch the theater movie about Lincoln's daily life before the tour, we did and felt like we had already seen the house the guide basically relayed all the same facts from the movie.
The tour was full of interesting details of the Lincoln family home life before Abraham Lincoln became President. During the self guided portion, the guides were still available for questions. All in all, it was a very enjoyable experience.
The Lincoln house was the only house Abe ever bought. It sits in the same place in the same neighborhood that has plank curbs on the street. Very interesting stories told by our guide, and nice displays portraying the history of the era and if course Lincoln's life.
Worth the trip here! The surrounding homes next to the Lincoln home have also been restored to the time period. Many original items to the Lincoln's are in the home. The lincoln tomb is very close and is also worth the trip.
Impressive, FREE, educational, interesting, well presented, well preserved, nice signage, 2 movies and info in the visitors center. Gift shop, but I preferred Mr Lincoln's Gifts one block away. Get your free tickets in the visitors center. You can not get in the tour with out one.
Very much worth the trip. I was impressed with how much original furniture that Lincoln actually used was still in this house. The hand rail going up the stairs is original to the house so your hands are touching the exact same piece of furniture that Lincoln touched all those years ago. I learned a lot about Tad and Willie too. I plan to research them a little more. I never knew they were nicknamed the Springfield Terrors.
Wonderfully set out, (and set aside), area encompassing a number of houses, including Lincoln's looked after by the National Parks Service. Free guided tours to bring it alive, provided by Rangers with both fact and humour. A smart and informative Visitors Centre is a great bonus.
Great visit something not to miss while in Springfield.
One of the best preserved historic sites I've visited. Free admission and located not too far from the Lincoln libraey and museum.
I really wasn’t looking forward to going to this attraction. We were in St. Louis visiting and we’re looking for things to do. I was delightfully surprised with how interesting everything was. I also loved our tour guide he made it really really interesting for us.
Very cool place, lots of info
Enjoyed our time here. The park ranger who hosted our tour was very informed and you could tell had a real respect for the Lincolns. It's great that this is cost free so everyone can go there!. We highly recommend it.
Do not skip the tour of the Lincoln House!!!! It's worth the trip!!!! You will fall in love with the President and his family there.
Very informative with many original pieces displayed. We really enjoyed our visit!
Learned alot that books do not mentioned, very nice place to visit with family and friends. The staff was there to answer any and every question you might have. One thing I didn't see was his momerial ran out of time, if you to see everything get there early.
Wonderful! From Rapid City, SD Mt Rushmore
Pleasant, historic and fun way to spend an afternoon. Plus free!
Just stopped by on our way through and it was a nice little preserved community! Got to walk down the street enjoy the houses and history. The Park Rangers were helpful and friendly.
One of the best places to visit in Illinois
Nice place to visit. Guided tour gave lots of useful information.
Enjoyed the tour of Lincoln's home and the other houses as well.
Why else are you in Springfield? To see where he lived of course. Take the tour, very interesting to learn more.
Great History Lesson. Great experience.
A true historic American treasure. Both place and person. Brought me to tears. Beautiful place that reflects the beautiful people that lived there.
Amazingly restored. Enjoyed the details and the entire neighborhood they have created
Fascinating to see how Lincoln and his family lived. If you go to the presidential library/museum you really should see this too. Plus it’s free (they’ll tell you the story) and the parking lot is free to, in spite of what the sign says.
An honor to visit. Get your tour tickets early!
Excellent place to go. Tour guides were very knowledgeable. Enjoyed walking around and looking at all the old homes and reading the signs. The tour through Lincoln's home was fantastic!
Took a tour of the area. Very interesting facts. Make you feel like you went back in time.
We never leave this place disappointed, today is our 3rd visit! Wonderful history and friendly staff/ rangers! ♥️ The NPS!
Great place to visit and have a look around. Parking Is $2 an hour and we spent about 50 minutes. Had a guided tour around Abe's old house which houses some of his original furniture. Tour and entry were free and very relaxed. Guide was great
To experience Lincoln as the family man was amazing. Our tour guide was great and inspiring. Can't miss this park.
A definite stop if you are going to the Presidential Library and Museum. This is a great guided tour and step back into history. There is some out walking involved, so if the weather is raining/snowing go prepared. You not only get to tour his home, but also other buildings close by, again it is like a step back into old Springfield. Great place if you child is learning about President Lincoln, they get to take what their book tells them and then see it in real life.
So many details of Lincoln's life and thoughts. Loved the neighborhood restoration.
Always a great time going to the Lincoln home and the surrounding areas. If it is your first time coming to the Springfield area, I highly recommend!
I've visited President Lincoln's home all my life! A few years ago it became a federal park they litralely took the home apart board by board and totally restored it to it's original state! Even down to the original wall paper! It's a very special place!!!! It kinda puts a lump in your throat when you walk in the front door and you see his stove pipe hat and Shaw hanging on a hall tree inside the front door!!!!
We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Lincoln's home. We had previously visited New Salem so it was extra interesting to see how Lincoln had moved up in life. Admission was free (parking wasn't) and we lucked out and didn't have to wait long for a tour. It was so cool to go into the house and see each much of the original furnishings. We especially enjoyed the out house outside. The tour you get really depends on the park ranger guide.
While I wouldn’t make a special trip for this, it’s definitely somewhere you should stop if you’re on your way to or from Chicago or somewhere else. You get to step foot in President Lincoln’s house when he was still just a lawyer, not the president we know. And it’s completely free too, though you can visit the gift shop.
What the website doesn’t tell you is that the last tour is at 430, despite the “closing time” of 6pm. As someone who came a decent ways just to see this, and just taking some pictures of the outside of the house, it’s extremely disappointing. Even more so to be told I can’t go in and then see groups who came behind me get a tour.
Very nicely restored plus an informative and fun tour guide. By the way-it's free!!!
It was amazing. I can now know what our 16th president did and what items he had gotten over his life
Major attraction; restored to original condition
The house is all original with the exception of a couple pieces of furniture. Park Ranger was very knowledgeable. Great place to see.
We went on a Thursday--got a 9:45am showing and tour. We were the only ones on it! It was amazing. Completely free. I did do meter parking down the road, no need...there is parking right next to location. We had "Ranger John Wells" as our tour guide. He made the whole experience. How he told us stories, to how he taught us things, showed us things, he really painted a picture for us, of these old stories. Awesome work John, my niece and boyfriend had an amazing time. The last time I went here, they did not have the tours. I think it is a lot better and a way better touch. If you have time for a tour, I highly suggest asking for Ranger John Wells!!! He is AMAZING!
The Lincoln Home Historic site is fantastic. $2 parking fee but the tickets to tour the Lincoln home are free and first come first served for tour times. It isn't a long tour but well done and the house is neat.
It's free and definitely worth the trip. The staff was very knowledgeable and could answer every question we asked.
Excellent tour...Free...Amazing to travel back in time.
I strongly suggest you to visit here because it’s free ticket. :) Before visit the home see the free movie in there theatre. So that you can enjoy lot.The park ranger who hosted our tour was very informed and you could tell had a real respect for the Lincolns.
The home is beautiful and the park rangers are knowledgeable and friendly! It was a great trip for our family!
Wonderful guide Just eight amount of time Great gift center. Thanks.
I am in town on business but had some free time so I went to visit Lincoln's historic home. It was very interesting and everyone was very nice and helpful. The tour was great, and it is free which was nice as well!
The tour guide was very knowledgable and it was cool to see Lincoln's house. Other houses in his neighborhood were preserved making for a cool experience
This place was so adorable and our tour guide was the best. She was excited to see us and loved her job. Very clean and you can't touch anything but you get real close. The your group is about 15 people. The entire neighborhood is cute. You get to enter a few other houses but not all.
A lot of authentic old furniture and original wooding. The tour guide rangers add a lot to the experience with their stories, especially Michael. Thank you for making it a great experience!
Great place to learn about one of the best presidents in history
Amazing, iconic home of the great emancipator and 16th President. Lincoln lived here from 1844-1861. This is the only home Lincoln owned. All of his children were born here. The house has 12 rooms on 2 floors and you are allowed to take photos. The President's son, Robert, donated the home to the State of Illinois in 1887, under the condition it would be open to the public for free. It was designated a National Historic Landmark on Dec 19, 1960 and a National Historic Site on Aug 18, 1971.
Soo cool! We loved it♥️♥️♥️
Love it. But it takes time to get in so prepare to have extra time to uang around. Very good for kids to leatn history. You have to go on a tour. Amazing what you can learn.
