If you wanna know where we hid the Navy during the cold war, check out the Idaho high plains. When this baby finishes resurfacing the parking lot will move.

This a great preservation of the Hawkbill sail! And the nuclear power museum is amazing! Make sure you see Clay. He is a wealth of information and an extremely great guy!

Neat history. We came off season so the museum was closed and guides were on call. Posters in the gazebo were faded and difficult to read.

Jim Kerr

My second visit there and as a submariner I find it interesting. It is well worth the time.

Take the time to get out and read. This is a bonafide sail from a sub with some serious history especially in the arctic.

Debbie Reiter

The science museum building was not open. Many of the information boards were faded and can barely be read.

Lots of history in this little town..

Weird.. I was back in town to get propane after camping in the desert overnight, and low and behold there was the sail of a submarine seemingly sticking up out of the ground.. I had to take a closer look.. Submarines are usually not found in the middle of the desert but here it was, and with such an awful number 666.. I took a few pictures and looked around at the exibits, before going to find propane. Interesting is all I have to say..

You wouldn't think you would see the conning tower of a submarine here, but you do..

knowltk

"The Devil Boat" is the conning tower of the nuclear submarine USS Hawkbill (SSN-666). The nick name was inspired by the hull number. This is sort of an unusual site, it is in a small local park with just the conning tower sticking out of the ground. They also have a torpedo nearby. There is also a very tiny museum which was closed. I'm not sure when it is open. If you've never seen the conning tower of a submarine, you should definitely go (if you're in the area).

So cool!!!!!! Arco Idaho and the devil boat are beyond interesting. Completely worth the detour drive to check this place out.

Kieran Kentley

Amazing guide! The man there, I think his name was Derry, was extremely nice! He answered my questions and gave me a tour around the sub, the missile, and the storage container for nuclear waste. I signed the guest book, and checked out the museum as well. This is a reason to come to Arco. Enjoyed it immensely. - Kieran Kentley

Fun little detour, shows how big submarines are.

It isn't the devil boat. It's just a number the religious fanatics hate. The first ship to the south pole. Nuclear operated. History made.
