Historical attraction that brings back to life an important and often neglected part of history...maritime history. Where would we all be without the brave sailors who made world travel possible? Today it is a rare occasion to ride on a tall ship from centuries past. True she is a reproduction but a fine one with knowledgeable crew. I highly recommend!

Beautiful place! Inside the contemporary and immaculate building, you feel like you are a part of American history with the collection of photos and pamphlets within immediate view as you walk around the inside of the building. The enormous and famous Kalmar Nykel ship rests silently upon the Christina River for all spectators to see. There a tours and rides given. I am not sure about the prices, but the Kalmar Nykel is truly representative of Delaware history.

A sailing experience like you'll never get anywhere else!!! The Kalmar Nyckel allows passengers to participate, haul on lines, set sail or be supervisors as passengers would like. You also learn a lot of interesting things about the history of the ship.

Attended the pirate fest offered Today. They did not have enough food vendors to meet the needs of the people. Lines were long and many of them ran out of soda/water along with product. In addition, the staff running stations seemed stressed and weren't all kid friendly. One volunteer yelled at kids for touching a rope instead of asking them not too. In addition, they did not have enough craft items for all kids to participate and make the advertised crafts. I was left with gold coins that I could not get a refund for, even though I couldn't spend them due to them being I'll prepared.

A great ship full of great crew and a wonderful way to spend a day with family. The history program is amazing and provides knowledge to those who seek it. Best way to get hands on training on a tall ship.

We didn't sail with them but we visited their on-site museum called Copeland Maritime Center, which I thought was a good way to spend an hour (and the $5 we paid for admission). The museum has some really cool exhibitions, such as a roomful of ship models from many parts of the world, vintage photos of Wilmington in its heyday as an industrial center, and a log cabin display (apparently, a Finnish export). Also, don't miss scenic views of the Christina River at the back of the museum! The staff at the museum were very welcoming and passionate about sailing and history. One of them gave us a quick tour and patiently answered our questions. There is a small gift shop for those interested in souvenirs.

The best of Wilmington! A beautiful recreation of the 17th century armed merchant vessel that brought settlers from Sweden who founded the colony of New Sweden which is Delaware. The ship is available for charters, local day sales and educational sails, as well as corporate events and weddings. The maritime center hosts a collection of over 70 watercraft models from around the world, as well as a three quarter size model of the Kalmar Nyckel where students and visitors can learn how to fire a cannon and set and douse a sail.

I'm a bit biased, in that I was former sailing crew, but very good place to learn and meet new people. Crew is all volunteer except for the main Captains and officers and executive staff.

I volunteered to help them with the Pirate Fest event. I had nothing but positive encouragement from them. They were very kind and looked after all their volunteers. The foundation is great, doing their best to preserve the origins of Wilmington. The ship itself is absolutely gorgeous, and the museum area is chock full of information about the early sailing ship the Kalmar Nyckel and other ships like it that form the earliest settlement of Europeans in America. Tucked away on a little known tidal peninsula right here in Wilmington, the Kalmar Nyckel is a faithful reproduction of an early 1600s sailing vessel. They offer tours, cruises, and full on classes to learn how to sail a square rigged tall ship. The Kalmar Nyckel Foundation is a non profit, operating on a minimum budget. If you have some time to donate, and you love all things ships, boats, and/or sailing KNF is the place for you! P/S I joined KNF as volunteer just 2 days ago. I had a blast, the people there are great. So, my point is that this review is not a shill to drum up new members. I sincerely think this is an excellent organization, and they could use your help too. They are very low pressure, and they truly appreciate any help you can give.

Very disappointed. Scheduled a trip on the Kalmar Nyckel for my Birthday. Picked a date and time that my son could go with me, I paid for the tickets online, and was ready to go, it's something I wanted to do for along time. A couple of days later I received a phone call from them saying there was a scheduling conflict , and ask me to change my time. Because my son had other things scheduled that day we could not change. I m not sure how there could be a conflict when they make up their schedule several months in advance. Maybe someone booked a private trip so we got bumped so they could make more money.

Happened here by a pirate fest held at the dock. Very educational experience for ship lovers, with a passion for hands on. I learned more about smithing from thier demonstration then I ever learned from a college course on metalwork. It's the kind of educational, volunteer-driven foundation worth checking out!

The Kalmar Nyckel is a very special place... It is both an amazing piece of local history, as well as a wonderfully educational experience! Knowing the Captains and some of the volunteer staff, these are people who truly love what they do and put everything into making your time with them wonderful. I highly recommend visiting them for any of their educational outreaches, day trips, festivals, and events!

There's a great mini museum of ship history inside. It's a must see for history buffs if you're in the area.

Where else can you go sailing on a replica of the tall ship that brought the original Swedish colonists to Deleware in 1638!?! Full disclosure- I recently joined the volunteer crew that helps maintain and sail it - but you should too! What an opportunity to sail on a sweet boat for free! (Well, the cost of your time) and the people are fantastic, and the organization is top notch. Either way, come sailing with us!

Awesome place to taking kids who love ships, history, and the sea!

Museum, public and education sails. Drift back to the 17th C on this recreation of the ship that brought the first Dutch and Swedish settlers to what is now Wilmington, De. View the Wilmington Riverfront on a public sail on the Christiana River, or enjoy a trip to Old New Castle after sailing on Delaware's Tall Ship!
