REVIEWS OF Fort Delaware State Park IN Delaware

Pea Patch and Fort Delaware are ripe w history. Money is tight for Fed Parks, it is preserved as much as possible. I feel they do a great job. Plan or call before a day trip. Negative reviews are folks who see open in April on a Saturday and think it's parade weather. Spring, Summer is ideal for park visiting. Simply contact them first, a lot of week ends have re-enactments and time-dressed vollys. To visit off peak expecting bells and whistles is ridiculous. It is a beautiful area to boot and running a ferry(fuel, staff,INSURANCE) isn't cheap to cost complainers. Plan and enjoy a really cool day trip. *Hours posted on google. Weekends

What a wonderful place to visit! The history is captivating. One of the best features is that there is wheelchair access for the boat, tram and tour. Never have we found more convenience or welcoming for our 2 wheelchair-bound sons. Thank you!

mary elise

Awesome fireworks!!! Thankyou to my friends Sheri and Carl for inviting us!!

If you have an opportunity to spend the day at fort Delaware, I highly recommend doing it. There's so much history here. The reenactors that are there can teach you so much. Plus the ferry ride to and from the island is very relaxing.

play this place is closed during the week after Labor Day no signs you have to get all the way up to the building to find out nothing on any of the websites very disappointing can't see the fort real well from the shore typical

My Great-Great Grandfather was a Confederate prison held at Fort Delaware. Captured at the Battle of Wayneboro he was held from March 1864 until June 1864. 51st Virginia Infantry. It was eerie walking the place that he was held at 153 years ago.

dj buckner

We've lived here for 35 years. This was our first trip to this park. There are boats that take you to the prison. You need to buy tickets. There was a great ice cream place across the street.

I went to the POW event weekend & they have a lot of civil war reenactors. One part of the fort is for only bat tours. The rest of the fort you can walk around & you can use the stairs to get on the top. You can see the bay from the top. The fort do have cannons. There is picnic tables but you will have to take the trash with you. We paid $24 for the ferry for 2 people to go to the island. The ferry ride is around 10min from & to the island.

Great place to take the kids for a day! Had fun looking for ghost, like on Ghost Hunters. Hiked the nature trail biting flies, but a good walk! Kids learned a lot about the history! Been coming here since the1970's before they had electricity in a lot of the areas! Had several scouting events here, everyone seemed to have a good time! And more of the fort was opened to public than now, but still a very good place to come back to! Hard to believe that if you live in, Delaware mainly in New Castle region, and you have not been there to the island you really need to go! And not to forget the boat ride experience! Can't wait to get back there!

David Haring

I went there on Tuesday for a fifth grade field trip. The reenactors there stayed in their role and made it feel like 1864.

I have been to Fort Delaware many times over the last few decades. It is a great day trip. Is not very expensive, there are a lot of people that work hard to keep the place preserved and are very generous with their time.

Sorry we missed this on our trip North. We missed the ferry opening by a week. Hope to get back to see the fort where many of our ancestors were held as POW's during the war.

I love food

I went to Fort Delaware for a field trip and it was absolutely amazing! I got to see and experience how life was back then. This trip made me love history! The best part of my trip was going on the the ferry to arrive, and to head back. I hope I could go back again!

This was an excellent overall experience. I have two teen daughters that learned a lot and enjoyed themselves. All the staff were very nice and did a great job at showing my girls history alive. Definitely will be going back.

Very nice town. Sitting & looking out at the water, taking a ride on the ferry, or just walking around is very peaceful. Their July celebration is very festive. I enjoyed my visit.

Drove all the way from Dover on 4/19/18. Came in at 10:30 am. Google says they are open. We got there and they were close. What gives?

Stl Tour Couple

Very well preserved. Bill did a great job with overview. Note: lots of walking from dock along pier. 2.5 football fields in length

From the description on the parks website, I wasn't sure what to expect. I was very pleasantly surprised to find interpretive guides in period clothing who played the parts of soldiers and laborers at the fort during the Civil War. Most of them were very good, a few were excellent. They await your arrival at various places throughout the fort. I really learned a lot about the fort and the people who made it home, during my 3 hours at the fort.

They have everyting closed off and their attempt to preserve Fort Delaware is lackluster. 1/5 stars.

I went there for my daughter field trip she a bzllbut it was really cold

Theodore Bloemendaal

So far not happy. Was told by the staff after we purchased tickets at $12 each to be here at 11:20 at the ferry for it to leave at 11:30. We got here at 11:20 and the ferry was pulling away. Super cool. They told us after the fact that they combined the 11 and 11:30 ferry's but left at 11:20 and not 11:30. Now sitting here waiting for the 12 ferry. Hope it shows up. Note no food is available at the visitor center and the town only has one expensive restaurant; so bring food and water.

Jeff H

Really fun day exploring the fort (unguided)

Great little trip over to Pea Patch Island and the fort. Ghost tours are awesome.

Evgeny Filimonov

The fort is on the Pea Patch Island. You'll need to take a ferry. The cost of the ferry is $12 for adults, parking and entrance to the fort are free. Take with you water, bug spray, sunscreen, maybe some food (you won't be able to buy it there). About once an hour they they have great educational, very interesting programs. Overall it is a great experience! I would definitely recommend to visit the fort!

Nice day trip topped off with ice cream in Delawar City.

Lucas NG

Very interesting place if you like history and weaponry. The building itself tells a lot about the American civil war and also about the first and second world wars. The staff is helpful and knows lots of historical details. They show in depth how each weapon works and what was their role in war. The ferry is also really quick and it is really easy to park around the pier.

Frank Baier

Overall, great experience! It's started out a little rough when the ferry left early; however, the staff handled the situation perfectly. The ferry ride was great and definitely added to the experience. On the island, we paid $5 extra per person for the inside tour, which lasted about 2 and 1/2 hours. The guide was excellent and very knowledgeable. Also, we got to see parts of the fort that aren't included in the regular admission. One important thing to note is that this is a "leave it as is" site; therefore, any trash must taken with you when you leave the island and food and drink options on the island are very limited. Highly recommended!

Decently organized all the things. Some part of the fort are not maintained at all. Still good place to spend a day.

My experience here was both educational and entertaining. Reenactments were pleasantly accurate as well as their willingness to teach about the islands history. I love going here and will continue to do so for as long as i am in Delaware.

Eleven of us took the ferry to get to Fort Mott on a four-day bike trip. Our leader had called ahead and spoken with the ferry captain, who agreed to let us take four bicycles on the ferry because it would be a slow day (weekend before Memorial Day), and the rest of the bicycles had to be crammed into/onto the sag vehicle. Staff at Fort Delaware State Park didn't know about our leader's call and told us rather firmly, "No bicycles on the ferry", but acceded to the captain's dominion over the ferry. Getting the four bikes on was a tight fit, and forget about tandems, trikes, or recumbents. The moral of the story is to call ahead and seek special dispensation if you need to get bikes across the river. The nearest bike crossing upriver is the Ben Franklin Bridge between Philadelphia and Camden, NJ. If you have a group, try to book a group outing on the ferry. Also, don't rely on the ferry schedule posted on the park web site -- call the park and find out what the real schedule is.
