As you know, we do not usually stop to give tatings when they are correct and we usually do it only if we've had a problem or incidence...
This Tourist Attraction is included in the category of Wildlife refuge.
Loved it, although the fox did NOT say a single thing....
Great place for bird watching, mosquitos and green head flies. We decided to stay in the car, windows up after being attacked by a swarm of them after only a short attempt at a hike. May be better during the early spring or fall after the bugs are gone. Was able to see many species of birds from egrets, blue herons, a bunch of smaller species I'm not aware of the names. No eagles or Hawks in this trip though
I didn't know what to expect as this was my first visit. There is a couple of walking trails which we did not take as there were signs warning us of ticks. We were not dressed appropriately for that. There is a fairly long driving trails that go around marshy areas. There we found many aquatic bird species. You could stop at anytime and observe and take pictures. The ranger lent us a pair of binoculars when we payed the $4 dollar entry fee. All in all it was a fun experience. They also offer guided tour excursions.
Beautiful even on a cloudy day. Plenty of wild life.
Took my wife to Bombay Hook for her 1st time. She saw a bald eagle live for the 1st time in her life on our way in. She was ecstatic! We went in to the refuge and saw a fox, bluebirds swarming around our truck eating mosquitoes, a swan, geese, ducks, squirrels, egrets, a great blue herron fishing and then eating, vultures dinning on fish, and so many other birds and animals I can't list them all. We Will be returning. She won't be able to stay away!
Nice loop, saw many different kinds of birds and the purple martines where amazing.
Get out of your house look breath and smile !
As beautiful as beautiful gets beautiful as God created gorgeous
Having lived there most my life, I can say this is one of the few truly beautiful parks in Delaware. If you happen to be in the state for some reason this is one of the places you should definitely go. Just watch out in the summer, there are tons of bugs.
It was a lovely warm day in late February. Nice to take the boardwalk loop and see/hear the birds that believe it's Spring! Also always good to see the fiddler crabs sneaking out for a little sun - if you are very still and quiet and it's low tide.
Very peaceful. Beautiful. Make sure your car can handle rocky dirt roads.
Specially good for wildlife photographers who would want to catch glimpse of several birds having habitat here. For others who are just curious to see a bit of wildlife and trails, it may be a damper. There are a few trails which appear beautiful even in this pre-spring phase, I guess it would become even better in Spring and Summer. Ok for children. It has gravel roads and a lot of dust - anybody having dust allergy should be very careful while visiting here. There is a $4 fee per vehicle entering in the park area, that is deposited in an envelop at the entrance - keep cash for the fees.
Finally visited here on a recommendation from some friends, completely unaware of its existence for years. Well worth the trip--an untouched and beautiful area in DE that costs almost nothing ($4/car) to explore. Even in early spring, it was great to walk around and see.
This place is absolutely gorgeous and so easy to get to. I just recently discovered it after searching for other natural areas to explore in Delaware and I'm going back as soon as I possibly can. What the park maps and sites don't tell you is there are tons of smaller towers all throughout the refuge, I'm assuming for bird watching, that offer "off-the-beaten-path" breathtaking views of their own, but the main towers are truly second to none. I spent about 4 hours at the park and that's a long time to spend on a several mile drive track with few and very short trails. It's a lot to take in and you'll be spending your time looking at the same sights and pieces of nature tens of minutes at a time. It's a beautiful place! Check it out if you ever have the time!
Greatest wildlife refuge in Delaware!
Nice place
Great place for bird watching!!
OK, I came for the 12 miles of gravel road experience on my motorcycle, but the wildlife was spectacular. Bird watchers were happy to explain what they spotted, and share their telescopes. I watched bald eagles pluck fishes from a lagoon, and saw the close-up replay on a photographer's screen. In the attached shot, 5 eagles are fighting over a fish on a little island. Best $4 spent lately.
Plenty of birds. Too much flies
Bombay Hook's driving route takes you to fresh and salt water birding areas. Most of the East Coast migration routes pass Bombay Hook.
This is a great park to do some light sightseeing. The entire road trail is about 12 miles long in a one way route which you can simply drive from point to point where there are several stops along the way you can get out and have a short hike up to some specified point or lookout, or you can park at the entrance and ride a bike through and do the same. The entrance fees are very cheap, $4 for a single car, or $2 if you are biking in (for your entire group). While you will mainly see birds of all sorts, varying by the season, you can also see deer everywhere or even foxes. During the short hikes or even along the driving path many foxes popped up around and seemed to be comfortable with humans about, but would never get too close. The lookout towers offer a unique experience to go above everything and understand the scale of this refuge and we will definitely return many times more in the future.
Use to go me & my sister as children now we both take our kids & nieces & nephews it's so gorgeous year round
the workshop on Birds of Prey on Nov 18th was Great
This is a fabulous wildlife park. Great views. Nice roads and a lot to see. Great friendly man inside with information.
HAD SUCH AN AMAZING TIME CANT BELIEVE HOW MANY BALD EAGLES WERE OUT THERE, AND IF YOUR ON DISIBILITY I DID NOT KNOW THIS BUT YOU CAN GET INTO ANY NATIONAL.PARK FOR FREE WITH A CARD A PLACKERT THEY GIVE YOU I CANT WAIT TO UPDATE MY LENS SO I CAN COMPETW WITH THE BIG BOYS OUT THERE... CANT WAIT TO TAKE MY WIFE AND KIDS BACK THERE
BIRDS, BIRDS, BIRDS. You want em'? This place has got em'.
This is a US Fish & Wildlife Service fee area that is famous for observing water fowl and shore birds. Substantial driving areas with easy pull-off areas, with a few trails and observation platforms. There is also an interpretive center with restrooms.
Beautiful, wide open marshlands. Today, most birds are still vacationing in warmer climes.
Beautiful birds!
Nice staff, winter is probably not the best time to visit, not too many wildlife to see.
Good and quiet place ,,, good for birds photography
Absolutely perfect for birding. From raptors to herons/egrets to small insectivores, this place is fantastic. The birds are also pretty comfortable being observed and having cars go by, so no need to use camo or a blind. That said, the horseflies and deerflies are vicious, especially by the boardwalk trail - they don't even care about spray! Wear long pants and a field shirt if you want to avoid being eaten alive, plus a headnet and gloves if you need to be able to stay still. Also, high numbers of ticks here even in the grass along the roadside. Tuck your pants into your socks and your shirt into your pants, try to stay out of brush especially in/near the forest, and check yourself/eachother before you get back in the car.
What a place! All sorts of waterfowl, numerous species of avian Raptors, a must see, & only $4.00. A very good deal.
Great scenery
Loved it telling everyone,,so much to see and take in
This is a fantastic area for birding. We love it.
Amazing place, can use all the help you can give
Nice drive, and easy walking trails.
Beautiful place, staff very helpful and pleasant
Always enjoy hiking in the Refuge. Lots of options, lots of wildlife to see, enjoyable every time I visit.
The peacefulness of it. And the bald eagle I saw made it more awesome.
Exceptional wildlife and birding opportunities among the lakes, marshes and deciduous forest. Solid short hikes and plenty of observation towers.
Awesome place to see birds and wildlife. Best thingis you can drive inside the park. In winter this is awesome.
Saw a lot of herons and egrets, turtles, 1 large hawk, on a beautiful afternoon
Awesome place to bird, though I must say, the green flies were TERRIBLE! On my last visit we saw over 60 species. I was particularly fond of the little Marsh Wren, and I got to see a lot of him.
This is a fabulous place. A meeting of mature and immature eagles today, more than 13. Fantastic. There are a few potholes to navigate through.
Parked and walked the park. Saw water snack sun bathing, fox taking a morning stroll, and my favorite Delaware bird, Great Blue Heron.
A lot of birds with low price(4$ for a car), the only this is that there was a lot of biting flys and we didn't leave the car at all , otherwise beautiful
There's always something to see there! Today we saw a bald eagle working on a nest, swans, herons and four different types of ducks.
Just gorgeous place, wonderful scenery and quiet. If you are riding a bike through here I recommend 38mm tires minimum, knocked up my road bike rims quite a bit LOL!
Such a beautiful and enjoyable place! Can't wait to go back!
Great place to visit. Was able to drive through because the insects were swarming it would otherwise have been a great hike. Lots of wildlife. Herons, Egrets. Really beautiful. They were having bird identification and a photography class while we were there. Absolutely worth the visit
I was looking for an outdoor adventure along the coast of Delaware and decided upon this National Wildlife Refuge. Inexpensive at $4, $2 for bicyclists. Immediately as I drove in after the visitor center, my open windows were bombarded with swarms of bugs. I closed the windows to drive through the site and hoped it would clear up along my way to try hiking the very short distance trails. I attempted Parsons Point Trail after dousing myself in bug spray and I was still being swarmed and bitten. I decided to enjoy the views from my car and I am grateful to have seen Egrets, Grey Herons, Terns, Red Winged Black Birds and a couple other birds I am unfamiliar with. The pools are beautiful, and the signs along the road are informative. An inexpensive experience worth giving a shot — likely much friendlier to outdoor enthusiasts looking to walk or cycle.
Bombay Hook is really beautiful. But this time of year it's really not walkable because of the flies. So today was a driving only tour. Saw about a dozen types of beautiful birds.
Great fishing location
The bugs are so bad here which means that you can’t get out of the car at this time of the year. The ranger tour we took added no value, was badly driven in a bus with ineffective air conditioning. Earlier in the week we had been to Black Water NWR which was very pleasant with a great visitors centre, nice walks and a much more beautiful drive.
Bombay Hook has both an auto route and walking paths to observe rare and common migratory birds on the Atlantic Flyway. The visitor center near the entrance often has programs, so check the website or stop in to see what is going on. They also have binoculars and bird guides for you to check out if you don't have your own (or forgot them). Pack snacks or lunch to enjoy, since there are no concessions on the refuge.
Awesome refuge!! Dead of winter and still non stop wildlife multiple harriers and eagles. Waterfowl everywhere
A gorgeous place to visit. Beautiful vistas over the water. Take your time around the driving loop, feel free to stop frequently and take photos or walk the trails. The only downside is the mosquitoes. They are HUGE and they will swarm the cars without mercy so that you can't even roll down your windows. It's like something out of a horror movie. Try going in cooler weather and early in the day to avoid them.
One of our favorite stops,. See everything from , ducks, egrets, heron, eagles, owls, foxes, turtles and more with out having to leave your car. Different species ate there different times of year.
Great place to explore nature.
Very nice and relaxing place to visit.
If your interested in birds go visit
Karen Dever was super helpful at the visitor center. This park has a full drive-through path. You don't need to get on foot to enjoy the birds that frequent these swamps and ponds. If you're going to be here in the summer - plan to carry a LOT of bug spray and wear long sleeves and pants. The mosquitoes, gnats, flies are incredible in both size an quantity. You will get welts the size of small marbles and bleed from their bites. They can even go through thin cloth - so be warned! If you're not prepared - don't plan on stepping outside your car or opening any windows as you drive through. That being said - don't forget to grab a pair of free loaner binoculars from the visitor center if you don't have your own. Its costs $4/car in cash to visit Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge park.
My kind of place to let the bombardment of society ebb and flow away. Wildlife & Nature.... it's all there.
A first class spot for bird watching. I'm from Annapolis, so this is the spot for many hard to find waterfowl . It's a federal reserve, so a small fee is involved. Bug juice required in the warmer months.
The variety of habitats lead to lots of wildlife.
It's a beautiful drive. Bring binoculars and and camera ☺
View is outrangest..
Beautiful ride, great place for nature photography or just getting back to nature for a little while. You don't even have to leave your car if you don't want to, but the views are worth taking the trails.
I love the fact that you can ride around the 12 mile trail. It's very beautiful and the wildlife is awesome. Can't wait to go back!
I love this place because it is beautiful and a wildlife refuge! Driving tour and walking trails give you different habitats in the same day! Birding photo ops galore!
Excellent wildlife refuge, drive through and you'll be able to see everything from birds to fox to deer
One of my favorite nature spots on the East Coast. Head to the Visitor Center first and they’ll help you get around. I personally go birding here about once a year and it’s one of the best places to see a variety of species during migration.
Amazing wildlife refuge. We saw a few bald eagles while we were there.
Tons of wildlife to enjoy. Bring bugspray!
This is an awesome place to,see many types of flora and fauna all year round. Today was no exception!
We had a wonderful time here. Plenty of waterfowl and birds to observe. We also saw a few turtles sunning themselves.
Relaxing
This place is amazing! It's tranquil yet full of life.
Beautiful place was a great time.
Wide variety of birds congregate in the tidal pools and other areas of the Reserve. Good looks and plenty of time to study the birds before they move on. Need to have bug spray to repel the May Flies and other biting pests. Bring your own water when you visit. It is one of the best places around and we'll worth the visit.
Extremely peaceful, beautiful wildlife. Watch out for mosquitos and ticks in the summer.
Absolutely love Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge if you're a birder photographer or just a naturalist it's a great place to see and View and photograph Lots different wildlife.. best part is its a drive around!! You can get out of your car and set up a tripod or go to different viewing Towers!
Amazing place to view wildlife, enjoy nature and photograph birds. Best of all the ponds are surrounded by roads so it's easy to set up your photo equipment. Beautiful Bayside panoramas
This place is amazing with the huge amount of wildlife your sure to see that bald eagle or that fiddler crabs
Great place if you like to bird watch. We saw ducks, geese, blue herons, great egrets, a bald eagle, a swan and a bunch of other neat birds. It's a very relaxing drive around the refuge and there are lots of trails and look outs.
Quiet place, in beautiful wetlands. lots of avian wildlife, and some furry critters, too (fox and deer, mainly). If you want landscapes, there's a nice view inland across one of the ponds. If you want bird shots, better have a long lens. Still, it's a nice, peaceful place to go, generally speaking. Support our National Parks.
Nice place to stop and take a walk
Well maintained trails. Saw many Great Blue Herons and a Bald Eagle.
Beautiful and peaceful drive
Some times of the year Bombay Hook is plagued by biting flies. Try calling 1st or going in the fall and winter. For some reason, the flies can be very bad at BH and no where to be found just up the road at Woodland Beach which is very natural and unspoiled. Without the flies BH is a treasure.
Great place. Saw eagles, owls, snow geese, bufflehead ducks, and many other birds. Not crowded and no bugs this time of year.
A beautiful and stunning place to visit for bird watchers and nature lovers. Watch out fit the bitting flees in summer though. Great for photography. Entrance fee is nominal.
This place is really nice and great way to spend a day without spending a lot of money. The trails are great and the viewing towers are even better. The only thing bad I will say is that there is no where to get drinkable water on the refuge. The gift shop and education center doesn't have any food or drink concessions, no vending machines. Take a cooler with you.
Love this place never know what wildlife you will see in the park
Best birdjngaandbature place in Delaware. Often equal to Ding Darling. Hi need. To exit car.bug spray advised .
Fantastic place if you enjoy nature Take insect repellent!!!
Vast, gorgeous marshland teeming with herons and cranes.
Bombay Hook is a great place to bring the family. We see something new each time we go. The kids love the ranger led programs. The visitor center allows you to check out binoculars if you need them for the day as well. While you are here, check out the several trails in the refuge. Parsons Point Trail is a family favorite as it brings you by the remains of a WW2 tower on the way to Shearness Pool.
Great place for nature, birds watchers. I will be back soon
Loved my visit. Can't wait to go back..
Great place to reconnect with nature. You can stay in the car and just drive through slow, and if you want you can get out and walk some short trails. Lots of birds and other animals to see.
Loved visiting here. It's about a 2-hr drive from the DC area and well worth it. Apparently, there are birds that migrate through all season long. My girlfriend and I (both in our mid-20s) found ourselves surrounded by retired folks carrying high-end binoculars and telescopes around. Luckily for us, the visitor center was kind enough to lend binoculars and the "regulars" would sometimes let us look through their scopes. The refuge itself is a nice drive. You can stop wherever you want, get out, look around, snap photos, and then continue along. You can also bike. I would recommend going between winter/spring or fall/winter seasons to get a decent amount of warmth without the bugs.
A wonderful place. A very peaceful atmosphere and many birds to observe.
Very nice place to drive around and see the wildlife and scenery. One of the best birding areas to go, we always see something amazing, unusual or rare. The visitor center is nice inside. Best to go when the bugs aren't swarming or else your stuck in your car. We couldn't get to any of the towers without getting bit up, it's expected this time of year. Definitely will go back in the fall.
They have areas for hiking, but also a drive around the park. Very relaxing drive. We've stopped on the drive to view the wild Life.. very nice.
A couple of thousand acres wetlands, lakes. Beautiful wildlife refuge PL.
Bald eagles, Turkey vultures, snow geese,...and patience
Great place for cycling, walking,or driving through.
If you love watching birds, this is the place to go! So many herons, egrets, geese and lots of Eagles! It was amazing to sit and watch them all.
This is a nice off the beaten path place to visit. We were hoping for more opportunities to get out and walk but there weren't many.
Nice mid-Atlantic wildlife refuge. One may see great blue herons, great egrets, snowy egrets, anhingas, night herons, ducks, geese etc. A fall attraction is the thousands of migrating snow geese.
Peace, beautiful day.
Not much seen this day as I believe it now time for the birds to start Migrating in. Needs bathrooms (even a porta potty would do). Would help if it had signs with pics of the different birds and animals to look out for especially for the kids.
Great for American eagle seeking
Nice place reach with birds and wildlife
First visit was in the rain, and we still saw all kinds of wildlife. Beautiful place, plan to return soon
If you like nature and or photography it's a dream come true.
Great place for Snow geese migrating
We absolutely love this place. We go a few times a year and we always see something that leaves us feeling happy.
What's good: Absolute paradise for Bird watchers in Delaware. Best season to visit is in the fall when the place is crowded with water fowls and herons. However the place won't let you down anytime of the year, you will get pretty much something birds around. What's not : The place is in pristine natural self and park authorities have not made much human structures and roads. If you have a truck or SUV it's fun, otherwise ok. Carry insect repellent, apply with generous doses and mimosas nature full clothing to cover yourself else be prepared for the onslaught.
We went in November and it was overcast and windy but there's no bugs. We saw a lot of geese, ducks and a red fox. We had a wonderful time.
What can I say? Some excellent birding and views of a marsh. Highly recommend the boardwalk.
Beautiful views. Wildlife. Lite hiking. Bring your water.
The combination of woods, fields, freshwater, tides, marshes, etc. creates a natural wonderland for observing flora and fauna.
A great place to see native and migratory bird species. Herons, egrets, goldfinch, indigo bunting, geese, terns, and even a red fox makes the rounds and poses for pics. Yes, during summer there are lots of biting flies but around August they start to die down. We wear long sleeves and a hat to step out of the car and snap photos. Very friendly people here that are usually happy to discuss birding and sharing photos.
Too many mosquitoes, ticks and flies, but the place is awesome! Bring repellent if you plan on visit
Great place
Wildlife viewing opportunities abound. One of our favorite National Wildlife Refuges on the east coast. You can follow the roads through many different habitats or hike one of many trails throughout the refuge. There is always a wide variety of birds including shorebirds Bald Eagles, hawks and Snow Geese. You may also see fox, deer, turkey, raccoons, owls etc. They have a small visitors center with a little gift shop. The restrooms are accessible even if the visitors center is closed. We often spend 2 days at Bombay Hook NWR. We stay nearby in Dover.
Best place for me to see wildlife from the car (handicapped).
Absolutely beautiful, a Delaware treasure!
Always a calming experience
The location of Metropolis in the Superman comics story!
1st visit. We will return in the summer.
Incredible views without even leaving your car. A solid 12 mile trail that's very easy to drive along, tons of wildlife to see, but definitely don't want to leave your car in the summer cause of the bugs. But why even bother when the wildlife drive is already so nice.
Amazing place to drive around and look around, $4/car. Could take from 30min to 3 hours depends on how much you want to see or take some trials (most of them are round trip about 0.3-1 mile). I saw wild foxes and eagle.
Hidden treasure in DE. Helpful and knowledgeable volunteer on site made the visit more enjoyable. Bug spray will be useful in summer.
This place is full of ticks. We could hardly come out of the car. However serious watchers had come prepared.
Lots of wild life to see and trails to walk bring bug spray in summer
We stopped here the end of July after a rainy period and found the roads to be in excellent condition. There are many different habitats within the refuge providing a great opportunity to see birds of different types. I found it particularly interesting that there was a children's learning area at the visitor center that I have not seen else where.
Always worth the long drive to see the great variety of birds!
Our travels took us to Bombay Hook on a blustery weekend in March. After paying a nominal entry fee ($4?) to enter the park, we wandered around the driving-tour roads that circled ponds, small rivers, and fields. Most of the side-hikes we walked were around 0.5 miles round trip and offered varying views of vegetation and wild life. All in total, we probably spent 2-3 hours at the park photographing the wildlife (excellent for birds) and meandering the trails. Will definitely visit again for more photographic opportunities!
Nice to be able to drive and still lots of places to see lots of birds!
Even in late March on a cold day we saw wildlife from wood ducks to fox and so much more! What a treasure! Plan to drive slowly on the full 12 miles!
Great drive, if you're there at the right time there are so many birds to check out.
Absolutely gorgeous! This was one of my favorite spots when I vacationed to Dover, DE. If you're ever in the state, go here. There are some amazing opportunities for pictures of the breathtaking views. And, at $4/day, you can't beat the price.
When you go in, you pay outside. But, you can pretty much drive the whole way around and park your car where ever to sight see or bird watch. Theres more then enough space to park and view. I love that its dog friendly.
A wonderful place to visit. Lots of nature ...changes with the seasons. A must see!
A must see, felt like we were in a different place! Great views of wildlife all around. FYI, there are so many bugs to explore.
Tranquility personified.
Large saltmarsh refuge. Great for bird watching and for long walks. Being your sunscreen. Loads of native and migratory bird species. Herons, egrets, gulls, geese, ducks, red fox. There are ticks here, of course.
The Boys Scouts enjoyed their time here. Amazing scenic wetlands.
So breath taking...I love it there!
Absolutely beautiful national Park and part of the east coast migratory bird highway. You can see tens of thousands of bird fly through here if you are lucky. Really brings you back to nature. Lots of different paths to drive along and some people here taking photos are definitely professionals. Just don't block the roads, and don't make any noise. Absolutely do not honk your horn, you'll bother the birds.
We had a great time birdwatching at BHNWR. We hoped to see a rocket launch from NASA Wallops further down the Eastern Shore.
Great place to see wildlife and some nice little hikes as well. Bring your binoculars. This is where I bought my Senior's National Park Pass. Quite the good value, that pass...and we've used it extensively.
Love it here
