REVIEWS OF Montezuma Castle National Monument IN Arizona

Jason Osterman

It was just okay. I mean you pay a good bit to go see a building in the side of a mountain. Cant go in it, you can only see it from a distance and this was all there was. Place was really nice and clean but we stayed for about 30 minutes and left. Nice for a good picture but that's about it. Spent 20 years in Europe and have seen castles, to me this is no castle.

Frederick McConnell

Fantastic Museum area. Great accommodations to view the cliff dwellings. Staff were very nice. Highly recommend going to see.

Steve Boger

A very small but very interesting park. The Adobe was abandoned 600 years ago, so access is restricted. Ok, in reality there is no access. You can walk 150 yards our so and gaze at the cloud face and buildings. The rangers do a good job of bringing it somewhat to life. And the local playing the native American flute creates a beautiful time for the afternoon. you'll only be there for an hour most likely.

Victorian Abdul-Aziz

Short 20 minute tour. Just enough to spark your interest. Its history, so if your not into that it's not for you. I loved it!

Anthony Vu

It's neat and educational. It's fun to go look at and learn about the people who lived there. But it's not somewhere you'd spend a whole day. And pretty expensive for groups. But not something you'll see anywhere else.

Karen Fleck

Not to be missed. Ancient cliff dwelling Pueblo Indian village. There is a fee if you do not have a national park pass. The walk from the parking lot is easy. Allow 30 minutes to read everything and view the village build into the rock.

Martin Player

Saw the signs for this place while camping up in Coconino National forest and decided to stop to check it out. I liked that it was a fairly short hike on a totally paved path to the cliff dwelling from the visitor center. Not as impressive as Mesa Verde but still pretty cool. It's a quick hike to walk the entire trail. 30 minutes to an hour depending on how often you stop for photos and to read all the information plaques along the trail.

Marisa Thomas

Very interesting! Love the history! Definitely worth the visit!

Thomas Hatch

The $10 per person was a huge turn off. It was cheaper for our family to see the Grand Canyon which was much more interesting.

Chris Torrance

An easy stop off Interstate 17. An interesting place to see Indian ruins. You can spend 30 minutes or 3 hours.

The Skull Man

If your coming from Tucson and love the natives it's a short visit due to the area being so small, but it is a very impressive sight

Petrona Zickgraf

Short, quick visit. It's helpful that they don't charge for anyone under 16 years of age. Not a whole lot to keep you long, but it is a valuable piece of history.

Michael Verhoest

Another amazing place in the Arizona wilderness! I wanted to climb up to the castle and check out the inside. The don't let. ☹ still a great spot. Highly recommend!

Pamela Weir

Very interesting and enjoyed the experience. Loved that it was pet friendly

Maiden Laura

Astounding! How these were built in the mountain side. The castle is the largest of these, but the rest are like apartment buildings. They are all on the side of the mountain and you can feel the hustle and bustle of the people from days past.

PAtricia Autler

This place is an amazing place to stop at just to check out. And the Flute player outside the door makes me want to take lessons to learn how to play that beautiful sound!

Bradley Rahmoeller

A short walk on a paved path, leads to a glimpse of the past. Imagine living on the side of a mountain, as you gaze up to this historical landmark, Montezuma castle. Historical fact, the name of this landmark has no connection to the people who lived here. For more information visit this site and talk with the wonderful park rangers on staff. They are knowledgeable and friendly.

Lyndal Bernhardi

.6 mile loop back to Visitors Center on paved trail, with benches along the way, as well as informational plates on surrounding plants and about the Castle. Free with Annual National Parks Pass, otherwise fee needed. We enjoyed our 1st trip there, lots of interesting info inside the visitors center too.

George Mavridis

Great. Loved it. Being there gives you a feeling of being back in time. If you are into Native American history, this is one of those places you have to visit. Amazing !!! In the middle of nowhere there was civilization. Will definately visit again.

John Barfield

Badass little spot to check out. Pretty short walk, and the guy on the flute outside sets the mood. Good stuff!

Cletis Henderson

Interesting historic point visit Montezuma Well in the same area about 7 miles north of Montezuma's Castle. Nice places to visit on a road trip.

Erica Lucci

An amazing national site reminding us that many people came before us. If you have kids, ask the ranger for a junior ranger pamphlet. It kept my kids highly engaged and we loved the badge/ceremony they earned at the end.

Yule Rage

Very green for Arizona. It’s a neat place to stop. Unfortunately you’d have trouble finding more than 15 minutes worth of stuff to do. As for the monument itself, it’s neat to look at, but you can’t get a good view of it or even get near it, so if you’re here to explore you’re out of luck. 100% of the land around the monument was closed for re-vegetation, so keep that in mind. When you visit, you’ll be standing in a line of tourists to snap a few photos then leave

karen cunningham

Absolutely fascinating and very powerful spiritual place. If you want to experience the tranquility of this very special place, go as early in the day as possible. I can only imagine what it was like to live there. Incredible monument to our Native American history

Liesbeth VanderWal

Fantastic national site! Well maintained and foreseeable. Easy handicap access

Diane Melde

Nice, peaceful spot. The ruins can only be viewed from a distance as they are up on a cliff, but you can still imagine daily life there many centuries ago.

Jim Minkel

Great place to visit to see unique features from the past. It is a National Monument with a day use fee. Not very busy which was nice. Staff very helpful and answer any and all questions. Short walk to view points. Floral and fauna can bite so use care. Can't get close because others in the past have taken artifacts. It is a short visit but well worth it. Kids like the prickly pear gummy bears.

Earl Reagan Jr

Visitor center & monument easily accessed, just off I-17 exit. Wide & gentle sloping concrete pathway to monument viewing.

Melanie Lane Mitchell

Very cool place and super interesting. Concrete pad to walk on. Can push someone in a wheelchair/stroller to go see it. Takes about 30 minutes to go through and read everything. Nice gift shop. Bathrooms were clean.

dnm Cruiser

Place is in desperate need of a clean up . there is dead brush throughout the walkways it doesn't appear that there is anyone who maintains the appearance of this place. Just figured you have to pay an entry fee to see the the small cliff dwelling, you would think it would be better maintained.

Karol Gawrych

A short walk here is the perfect start to any adventure. Although there is no hike, there is plenty of history to learn and the majesty of the “castle” built into the nearby cliff. To witness and hear about the ingenuity of the indigenous tribes is wonderful and well worth your time.

Ivan Racic

A great short getaway from Phx heat either on the way to Sedona or Flagstaff. Experience the history of Arizona native nations first hand. I wonder if those trees could speak what would be the story like...

Dan Wilding

This was a really interesting place to visit. The "castle " is carved right into the sandstone cliff. Additionally there is a nice gift shop at the entrance. This is a national park, so there is a charge for entrance. Parking is easy. The walk to the castle is only a hundred yards or so.... it's paved the whole way, so it's quite easy for all abilities.

Richard Nance

Good history on the Hopi (and other) Indian tribes who lay claim on making stops at what is now called Montezuma Castle. (Although king Montezuma never came near the area) Neat to learn that most people never really made the cliff dwelling a permanent home, but like a hotel, stayed long enough to refresh then move onto more hospitable lands. There had to have been a few people who stayed around to fish, make clay, harvest the many plants (including cotton) , and upkeep the cliff dwellings.

T F Sakolsky

This sight offers great information on the rock dwelling as well as a lot of the surrounding plants and trees. We were glad to make this stop on our way to Sedona. We also appreciated the 1/3 mile walk to stretch our legs before getting back on the road.

Robert Adcock

This is a great place. It has a nice visitors center and lots to see and learn. The area is teaming with wildlife so, bring your camera!

Mardi Gras

Very interesting. We didn't have much time, but we wanted to stop. The trail is very easy, no hiking skills necessary. I recommend this sight. We will be back when we have more time.

Dan Grimes

Short stroll on a paved path takes you to the remains of this cool place. Informative place st the start and good signage makes for a great stop!

Robin Glover

It's neat and educational. It's fun to go look at and learn about the people who lived there. But it's not somewhere you'd spend a whole day. And pretty expensive for groups. But not something you'll see anywhere else.

Rebekah Anderson

Awesome vibe and stories here, the park rangers or whatever their title is are super friendly and very helpful too!

Bonnie Koppelmann

I've been here a couple times. Once as a family with my young daughters and once as a couple with my new husband. It's cool to think people lived like that...but is also just something you look at from afar...so...

Josh Baker

Great place to visit a lot of helpful staff and you can learn a lot here..

b merical

Another awesome place to checkout!! Was quite informative & unbelievable how they built it and it still stands the test of time

Don Swailes

Great place for a quick and fascinating visit. One of several sin aqua native American sites in AZ. Have been there 3 times and always find something I missed in previous visits.

Judy Smith

Very beautiful place with a fascinating history. We loved it! Great for birding, too. We saw a Great Horned Owl and it's near to fledging Chick at the top of the main structure!

Dora Bustos

Place is naturally beautiful. The entrance fee is a NITEMARE!! ITS A TRAP. $10.00 a person!! Trail is short but there are No Guides!! What a damn ripoff!!

Margaret Belle Mendoza

It is amazing to see. They have nice smooth paths for accessibility. It was busy but worth it.

Janie Guetzow

Super fun and interesting trek for young and old! Though hot, it's a short hike with plenty of interesting facts about the indigenous people of the area! I'd go again!

Eric Eisberg

A great, quick stop on a road trip. Very cool

Tara Price

Love it! Beautiful area and the castle on the side of the limestone mountain is amazing. Cute visitors center with really friendly patient ranges. My 4 kids loved learning about it with the junior book. They love to earn their badges. The walk is beautiful near the water and mountain.

John Cody

It was very interesting seeing this live and in person after seeing it on TV and movies for so many years.

Susan Botts

Another hidden gem that is worth a brief detour off the interstate. You will not be disappointed, unless you hate history :) Learning about the Sinagua people who inhabited the cliff dwellings is a bonus!

Jody McCasland

Wow. Just Wow. They said it's one third of a mile and I was not prepared.... I was looking at a tree and then looked over to see something that just awed me. The Castle. And then I read how they created it and that you can still see their handprints in the mud. Definitely a must see if you are in the area.

Bill Coyle

It used to be free but now cost 10 bucks. I am happy to support any park. It would be so much cooler if the dirt trails wasn't closed. We could only walk on the concrete path.

Bill Ryan

Wonderful site to visit. Everyone who works there were very helpful & open to questions & conversation.

Ryan Forbes

As a fan of history, I normally find this kind of thing fascinating, and historically, it is. However after a recent trip to the spectacular Grand Canyon for only $35 for 7 people in a vehicle, paying $40 for 4 adults to see this tiny park seemed ridiculous. The staff was great, but there really isn't much to this place. Totally worth it if you have an annual pass, but not particularly worth it if you're just paying to see this park alone.

Jeremy Rogers

Cool National Park to stop by if you are in the area. The America the Beautiful pass got us in for free. It would have been a much harder pill to swallow at $10 per adult. Cool to see how people lived 900 years ago.

Mindi Gusman

Awesome place! Awesome people! The people who work at this park really do it out of love. The flute player adds a really ethereal quality, making you feel like you're back in time. And the store has so many awesome options!!

Steve Mills

This is a well preserved cliff dwelling that shows the history of the early Southwest region of the US. The cost to get in can be steep for a large family but if you purchase an annual pass to the national parks you can get in for free as well at other parks in the area such as the Grand Canyon, and Petrified Forest. There are smooth paved walking trails to see everything so access to the park should be easy for most anyone. The park rangers and staff are very friendly and willing to help out.

Chris McKinney

Very interesting visit. However, I question the $10 per person price tag. Thankfully, the ranger was kind enough to use our previous Grand Canyon National Park entrance receipt and allow us to upgrade to an America the Beautiful annual pass. The monument is interesting, good for about a 30 stroll around the grounds and museum. The museum also has a very good junior ranger scavenger hunt for the kids. I wouldn’t quite rank this a must-see if strapped for time in the Grand Canyon area, but fun if you have the time.

Nick Meltzer

Very short walk but interesting historical information and well preserved ruins.

Brad K

History and Beauty all rolled up in one. Defiantly a must stop on your trip. First of all, hard to believe there were people and communities that lived and existed like this at one time. Standing below this wall had me mesmerized right where I stood. Then to learn about the history on this what made it come to be was completely mind boggling. There are a lot of signs boards to read as you walk through but it would have been awesome to have a ranger there to tell the history and be able to ask questions to. Non the less, if your passing close by, take the time to stop and take it all in.

Pete Stevenson

Absolutely amazing! If you're close to this area in your travels it's worth a stop.

Jeff White

Quick easy National Monument you can stop at right off of the interstate. Nice little visitor center and nice sidewalk around to the viewing spots.

Joelhagraphy

I was disappointed that I couldn't go in the castle, until I got there and saw the crowds. All those people inside those little corridors would be a special kind of hell. I wonder if you can get a permit to see inside it. I had a Parks pass, but I would've been bummed if I paid for this. The castle is far away and there's not much in person that you can't see in a photograph. Just being honest

patricia wells

My favorite place. Very Spiritual feeling when viewing and walking this trail. Ruins are amazing, lots of info on reading plaques thru out your walk

Rick Nelson

It's a beautiful area and one of the park rangers that was there has been around quite a while and has been up in the castle several times. He related to us what it was like when you could go up there, which I believe has been discontinued for about 30 years. The knowledge he had regarding how it was built and the upkeep that was done on it annually made it much more interesting for us.

Lynda Fulks

Very informative and awe inspiring. A great quick stop to see one of Arizona's unique peices of history

Kristin Hargrove

Nice, quick self-guided tour to see these beauties! Lots of history to learn as you walk along. The trees and flowers were beautiful here! Check out the well nearby too!

Diego Gonzalez

Great condition is a small area but there is alot of history and the monument gets it out

Mike La Verdi

Got a greater appreciation and understanding of how the earlier Native American Indians lived... way way before white settlers... Very interesting, a must see if in area.

LIla Van Horn

The most amazing place! I would recommend it to anyone. A good glimpse into the past & so interesting

Bea Tobol

Beautiful and very interesting place to visit. It’s a short walk to see places with informational stands on the site. Visitors center nice and cool. Restrooms, filling water station. It’s useful to have a National Park pass , otherwise it’s $10 per person

Chelsea Roberts

Really neat place but it is a little pricey. 10$ a person is a lot for a 10-20 minute walk.

Shayden Landis

This castle is an awesome location with lots of history, indian items and artifacts. Lots of cool things to see if you walk around the trails. Its best to explore in the spring, fall or the minimal winter Arizona has to offer.

Tiffany Wilson

Beautiful place! It still looks the same as when I was a little child coming here on field trip. If you are interested in the history of the Verde Valley this is must stop. It won't take long and your entrance fee works for Montezuma Well and Tuzigoot as well.

jo. bowerwright

Amazing how much you can learn about other people from another time lived and survived, it's great to see history preserved for the future

Teresa Tucker

Very beautiful. Best time of year to visit perfect weather. The sound of the water in the creek just added so much to the atmosphere. Plan on going back. Even enjoyed the drive there.

Laschell Crook

Free National Park Day! How do you beat that? This is a hidden gem and not only are the cliff dwellings a sight to see but the change in flora and fauna is spectacular. That was a bonus. The sycamores are pure art.

Caleb de los Angeles

Lots to see and read. Lots of trees and a light breeze blows through the trails of the viewing area, so even on the hottest days, this visit is bearable. Do note that this place isn't free. You will have to keep in mind of the prices of visiting national parks.

Linda Evans

There with sun making it a glorious experience. Wondering why all the people disappeared and where they went? Do stop!

Alicia Peycelon

Visited on our way from Flagstaff to Phoenix. Surprising little gem of a place you'd never know was there if you stay on the highway. Small but well executed visitors center and short but pleasant walk to see the ruins and nearby creek. Plan for an hour visit.

Milton Barr

A wonderful monument to the cliff dweller culture and a great venue for tourists to walk where they walk. John the Park Director walked and talked with tourists explaining many details first hand. A great experience. Highly recommended.

Matthew Burtis

Beautiful monument, tons of interesting information available, cool gift shop

Sushi King

Lil tourist trappy, but still really cool. There are products in the giftshop that say "indian"

Heather Marek

This is a great stop for anyone with kids. The walking trail is fully paved and wide which was great for our stroller. There are a lot of places to stop and rest in the shade. The park rangers were all very friendly and had a scavenger hunt for the kids to do on the trail which made it extra engaging for them.

Alex Wattay

This is a “Must See” if you are exploring Arizona back country right off highway 17 about an hour north of Phoenix. If you like Native American history you won’t be disappointed here. Easy walk around the location and great park staff!

Cortney Furrow

Beautiful and very informative of the history it holds. Not a big hike, all paved and pretty even. Easily accessible for wheelchairs also. This National Park has a Bark Ranger program also!

Kleone Deehr

Beautiful, interesting monument. It's an easy, tranquil walk. Allow at least 30 minutes to read all the pertinent, informative material at the visitors center and on the trail. Friendly rangers make the experience fun for the kids. Buy a national park pass if you plan on visiting more than one site. They're good for a year and cover more than one person.

Robin L

Our family stopped here with the grandkids. It was very interesting. The Park Rangers were very nice and knowledgeable. The hike (walk) was easy and I would recommend checking it out. The kids were given a little booklet to cross off things they see on the hike and then at the end the Ranger gives them a Junior Ranger badge which really made their day. Glad we stopped by and checked this out. Amazing!

Rick Nobers

I like visiting national parks and monuments so here we are. I don't like the cost to visit this one. Dwellings in the side of a mountain and a well is further north. All these are in the Camp Verde area. These are cool to look at and peruse. I believe these were created by the original indigenous folks living here (Hohokam?) like in the 1200s. Could have my dates wrong.

Ben Mark

Hike is really short so don't go if you're looking for a hike, Castle is cool and info in the gift shop/history museum is neat. Didn't stay more than an hour, though.

Tami Williams

Nice walk. Amazing structure. Even in the heat the trees around the patches made nice shade. Walking not strenuous at all.

Deborah Nelson

I'm so happy that i finally got to come and visit this wonderful place. I had an amazing time visiting this place and learned a lot. We came right when it opened so it wasnt busy and we were able to go at a slow pace and get some great pictures.

Samantha Hobbs

A quick stop is worth it! Seeing a different way that Native Americans lived is enlightening. It's inspiring how people lived off the land and, in this case, in the cliffs. Very cool!

Jay Bingham

Nice place to visit. Rangers are friendly. There was a rattle snake lecture while we were there. I touched a rattle snake.

Hunter Smith

Great place for a quick family trip. Not something I would go very out of the way to go to, but definitely worth an hour of your time. My family was traveling from Phoenix to Sedona for the day and although we were exhausted, we decided to take a stop here. Price was not bad ($10 per person) and the gift shop had inexpensive novelty kind of things you’d find generally at a National Park gift shop. Signs were very informative and everyone was very respectful of the culture and history that were on the grounds!

Judy Genao

This is a neat find, nestle in the mountains is an abandon Indian village. The park is great to come and spend the day, beautiful Arizona white sycamore trees with a creek running along the property. My tip would be go earlu and bring a picnic with you because the area is that pretty. I would not say this during the hot months since I have discovered how hot Arizona heat can be in June. The ticket is about $10 per person and its free parking, only keep in mind the parking lot fills up fast.

Colin Thomson

Great to visit this place to learn more about Native American history and traditions. I only gave it 4 stars because you can easily see everything there in under an hour.

Benny Chupinij

Must visit when in Arizona and going to the Grand Canyon. Breath taking historic site. Great for all ages and people all obey the world to see. The park employees are friendly and knowledgeable. Be sure you take in all the history with out being behind the camera or cell phone. You can soak in all the history with the views here. A very important tip is to make sure have enough water when thing into the park. The walk isn't that far but with the heat and the time spent looking at everything, water is a must.

Mike H

It's okay. Not worth the $10 per person. Definitely worth seeing once.

Linda Monterroso

Love visiting places like this. $10 per adult, it has a small but very informative museum before you head out. Beaver river is nearby and can hear it as soon as you step out of your car, no access to it though. The people working and park guides are amazing. The walk around the park takes about 15-20 minutes.

Erik Greenlee

It's a quick trip visiting Sedona or heading to flagstaff from Phoenix. I only spent about ten minutes there but I love the history so cool to see how they built back then. And the fact it has held up this long is impressive

David Kravetz

One of the top class National Monuments in the country. Perched up high on a cliff, it provides a fairly close up view of the life of these ancient folk. If you are going to Sedona, take a detour to this place. You can thank me later!

Mary Kylee Smith

A very nice place to visit. Makes you wonder how people used to live in the past. Things were harder and easier back then in different ways from today. The history is rich. Wish there was a guide out talking to us about the site. For $10 fee per person to walk around a small loop, it was a bit pricey. But I hope the money goes to help keep this monument and history going.

canucks3322

The pictures online don't look like much but once you get down there it is pretty mind blowing when you realize it was all built without modern technology. Definitely worth the visit.

EZJ Medical

Cool ruins in the middle of know where. Visited here after meeting up with Graham Hancock in Sedona. If you like these stop in Globe they are bigger & silver city they are better & you can climb them.

Ashley Le

Very short trail, but the history of this place is amazing. Staff were very friendly and nice. The place was easy to find. Trail is flat, and easy for all ages

Gary Turner

This was a most awesome experience! What a riverside paradise the inhabitants of the day enjoyed. Not hard to understand why they chose this site. If you have the chance to see it, do! Very easy drive. Paved and mostly level walking paths make this special place accessible to most everyone.

Andrea Davis

This was a nice stroll Outdoors and they have a visitor center but it's really small. This is a good place if history buff or if you want to do something short with your family takes less than an hour to go to. If you go during hot season make sure you take water bottles with you no food there aren't many trash cans. Also take a camera that zooms for photos. you cannot get into the runs anymore only look. Also there are no tours but there are signs that detail about the area. It's a self-guided tour. The well and other paths are separate from this area.

Jessica Sumner

Pretty impressive. I spent the time there daydreaming about a day in a typical villagers' life on a typical village day...super dreamy to me. It was like looking at an ancient version of the "Boxcar Children"

Chris Angus

Great national Park, friendly rangers, knowledge volunteers, easy parking, great for young kids, has picnic tables in the shade

Kerrin Lowder

I think maybe 5 dollars a head or a car is better10 a head dwelling is cool tho

Sumiko Dowling

Well run, visitor-friendly National Monument, adjacent to additional sites that are National Parks & Monuments.

Michelle Squyars

I'm glad the family took the time to go out and visit Montezuma Castle. Although you can't walk into the ruins, the view from the valley floor is spectacular. The staff in the visitor center were so helpful and nice. They're was even a gentleman playing the flute. And for those who are worried, it's a super easy loop trail that is paved.

Gary

Wonderful piece of history in a beautiful location. Enjoyable stop that doesn’t take a lot of time. We were there about an hour and that included eating our lunch in the picnic area. Places like this make the National Parks pass worthwhile.

True Myth

Very cool place to visit! Handicapped accessable. Walk is short. Friendly staff at the visitors center. Only complaint is that it's $10/person for such a short walk.

Thomas Luikens

Excellent National Park Service experience. Accessible, historical, interpretive, magnificent. Exceeded my expectations.
