I've been having my vehicles serviced and repaired at University Tire for the last 10 years. Over the last couple of years I've seen a decline in service but nothing like yesterday. Knowing their first come first serve policy, I arrived at 7:10 am, told them I needed an oil change and state inspection and would wait. There were 2 young ladies ahead of me for inspections and I was told it would be about 2 hours. I thought that was reasonable and said that would be OK. After 3 hours, my vehicle had not been taken in, I inquired as to how much longer it would be and was told about 10 minutes they were just finishing up. Almost another hour passed and my vehicle still had not been taken in. In the meantime I step outside several times and observe the inspector walking around repeatably under the same SUV never touching anything and shooting the bull with the mechanic in the next bay. I retrieved my keys and left. No wonder I keep seeing advertisements on NBC 29 for help wanted all locations, managers, service writers and technicians. Never again!

My experience at this location has been horrible on TWO separate occasions. First, I took my brother's car in on a Saturday to get his car inspected. I sat and waited for two whole hours and when they said the vehicle was ready, they actually did an oil change on the car instead of inspecting it and then made me pay for it! And then I had to wait another WHOLE hour to get it inspected only to be told that it did not pass! Now today, I called because I wanted to get tires for my father's car and it's closer to my dad's house. I placed the call on Monday, July 29th and was told they had to order the tires and would call me back when they got in so that they could give me a total amount and set the appointment for Saturday. Well I never got a call and called today on August 2, only to be told that the tires were not ordered and no one seem to know what I was talking about! I looked through my call log just to make sure that I had the right branch, and guess what it was! This branch is HORRIBLE!! I will NEVER use them again! Makes you think if they can't even get the simple things right, imagine what they are doing to your car!!!!

I had a mixed experience. I needed a simple repair: replacing a valve stem on a wheel, and remounting it on the vehicle. Normally this should cost less than $20. I waited 2 hours for them to do a 15 minute job (busy Saturday I guess), and in the end, they actually didn't charge me for it, so basically I just paid with my long wait time. Overall I'm happy enough with that transaction that I would give a 5-star rating if the story ended there. However, I found that they rifled through a bunch of stuff in my car, and there is no way that was necessary for putting a valve stem in my wheel. I didn't find anything missing, but it was highly disturbing that they went through my stuff and moved it all around for no reason. Based on that I would give a 1-star rating, so I guess the average between 1 and 5 stars is 3.

This place usually is pretty good, but don't rely on their shuttle service. Most of the time when I call earlier in the morning, they don't have a shuttle driver. Today, I dropped off my car at 12:30pm. They told me it would be 4 to 5 hours because they were backed up. I said that was fine because I didn't leave work until 4:30 or 5. I made sure that they could pick me up when it was done, waited a few minutes for them to get the shuttle around and they took me to work. I called at 5:30pm and they said my car was next in line. I called back at 6:15pm. They said they were finishing up on the car and that I could start that way. I told him I was promised a ride and he said he didn't have anyone to come get me. He said he would try to find someone and call me back. At 6:35pm, he called and said he had someone on the way. I like and trust this company, but the shuttle could be more reliable.

They are VERY busy so plan accordingly. I came at 7:45 after they opened at 7:30 and was told it would be 1.5 hours for an oil change. So I made an appointment for later that day at 3:00. Showed up at 3 and waited and it still took 2 hours after he told me when I arrived that may car would be in the shop and started in 5 minutes. I know it always takes longer than expected in auto shops, but really? I probably won't be back.

Absolutely the worst car service I have ever received. Despite being on a roadtrip, they consistently put off service on our car, forcing us to find housing and spend money on a rental car much longer than anticipated. Every single time we called for an update, they were not straight forward with us. Our car was 4 hours later than they had told us it would be...after already being a day later than originally estimated. When we finally left the shop, the check engine light was on. Will never return or recommend to anyone.

I'm giving University Tire two stars because of my 2 hour wait time. If I would have been a walk in, I would have understood, but that was not the case. I made an appointment for 10am a week prior to bringing it in. This is not an exaggeration when I say I waited two hours! My receipt states they were finished with my vehicle by 11:51! At 10:40, my vehicle was still out on the lot so I went and asked how long it takes to have tires changed and made a remark about how they must not honor appointments because my car was still sitting outside! Do not take the time to make an appointment because clearly they don't honor it! On top of it all, they clearly don't know anything about customer satisfaction because they never offered to make it right! I'm mad I gave them my business especially since I had all four of my tires replaced!

went to have new tires put on, in getting the tire off the car they broke 2 lug studs, and then wanted to charge me for the replacement. after telling them why thats not right. then they said that they would cover it. Yes they replaced the lugs but then put on 2 bolts that where an odd size and did not fit. this could have really made for a bad daay if i had broke down on the road. it also took them over a week to replace the lugs too. dont go to this place. i will trust walmart over this place

This place is horrible. The guy in the front has a terrible attitude. They tried to charge me $155 to change my blinker lights in the front of my car and tried to justify that outrageous price by saying he had to take my headlights off the car. I have never worked on a car in my life, but it literally took me 20 minutes to watch a YouTube video and change the blinker lights myself at home. NO I DID NOT HAVE TO REMOVE MY HEADLIGHTS. I know that the shops don't make much money off of state inspections, but it is completely unethical to lie and attempt to cheat customers out of money. I will never come to this place again, and I would steer everyone I know away from this place.

Just bought a car last year new tires breaks and they try and say break's need 400.00 worth of work due to them trying to rip local cville residents took car to another location they stated they agree this business are crooks and do this to everyone unless you know owner direct stay away and beware of there taticts.

Would NEVER go here again. I went in for an inspection in the morning, they told me my car was going to be ready in a few hours so I have someone pick me up. Day went by and no calls.. Called them and they told me they never got to it and they'll do it tomorrow.. um what? I have a job and you're just now saying my car won't be with me until a day from now? Long story short, they failed me for no reason! I believe they put a hole in my tire because they were pissed I called. The car was brand new. Picked up my car and they were acting like they knew something I didn't. Don't trust them

Be careful - these guys will likely try to overcharge you. They told me that I needed a radiator changed and that it was going to cost me ~$1,000 (600 for the new radiator, 200 for the labor, and 180 to flush out the system and add antifreeze). Looked up radiators online and they run from $150-200...and they tried to charge $600. They didn't really have an explanation when I mentioned this to them. Went to AutoZone to see if they could diagnose the problem, estimate the cost, and could refer me somewhere to fix it. I mentioned that the guys at University Tire & Auto had quoted me at such a high price, and they said "not surprised. Unfortunately that's a regular occurrence over there."

I was in Charlottesville when my oil light came on (I'm from out of town) late on a Friday afternoon. Even though the place was quite busy and I had no appointment, Travis offered to take a quick look at the car for me. I'm ashamed to admit it's been so long since I personally checked my oil that I was reading the dipstick all wrong. He pointed out that even though there was oil on the dipstick that it was essentially bone dry. He then put in some oil I had with me, and when that still didn't fill it, added more from the shop's supply. He then pointed out that the battery that AAA had installed two days earlier was the wrong one for the car (the posts were in the wrong place), which was causing issues with the placement of the rod for my hood. Anyway, this was valuable information that I'll be using to get my money back from AAA hopefully. In any event, Travis kindly did all of this without accepting payment from me. I was extremely grateful for the help, and wanted to let the folks at University Tire & Auto know that his courtesy was very much appreciated (especially after just having been given obviously bad service by AAA). I'd recommend them to anyone.

If you pass your inspection they’ll get very pushy with suggested services and then they’ll get very rude if you decline. Everyone should just go to Total Auto across the street. Faster service and much better customer service.

I wouldn’t go to this place again. The front desk person was rude and unhelpful. I had an appt and was told I would have to wait behind another car. I had an appt for 7:30 and the guy told me by state law they’re not even suppose to make state inspection appts until 8am? So why the hell did you make my appt at that time and not relay the information earlier? They have no idea what they’re doing at this place. There are other better places to go in Charlottesville don’t waste your time with this company!

Called to get state inspection and was advised to come in at 7am the next day as they are first come first serve. Arrived at 7 and was told I would have to leave my vehicle and they might get to it same day, or possible next. When I stated I couldn't leave my vehicle for possibly two days for a state inspection, I was told I shouldn't have waited until the end of the month due to them being so busy. I advised they shouldnt tell people to arrive at 7 for something they cant address for days. Employee was rude and unprofessional.

I went in earlier this month to get my car inspected. After over 2 hours of waiting, the guy at the front desk (who was nice, but kept trying to upsell) said that my car wouldn't pass inspection and needed almost 700 dollars worth of work done to it. So, I went to get a second opinion at a different (and trustworthy) shop, who not only noticed that pipes looked like they had been loosened intentionally, but quoted me 200 less than University Tire. So, please heed my warning. University Tire on Pantops is a scam and waste of time and money. I highly advise against giving this location any business.

University Tire on Pantops worked overtime to help get our truck on the road...they were thoughtful, thorough, caring and professional. They found a problem that another mechanic overlooked and corrected it giving a smooth, tight ride with no front end issues. Jamie, the manager and Travis have been especially kind and helpful. Further, I was quoted $110!! And then $65 for a standard oil change by two other local mechanics for my Fiat 500...University Tire did it for $18! Lastly, one day while having my car serviced I left my packages by mistake at UTire from shopping...Eduardo called me at home and told me they found them...then he waited after they were closed until I was able to come and get them just to make sure I had received them safely!! These guys have my vote, hands down!!

I had to go to the shop because my alternator gave out while traveling on the highway. I told the guys at University Tire that it was probably the alternator, which it turned out to be. After they looked at my car they confirmed that the alternator was shot, but also the BG air induction must be serviced ($169) along with cleaning four other sensor services at cost of $50 a piece. I ask him if it was essential and if so would I be able to conduct the maintenance. I let him know that I have more time than money right now, and if I could take care of the services myself I would prefer that. He made me feel that it was absolutely essential that this stuff get taken care of and that it was extremely difficult. After getting home and checking on how to do the procedures on the internet (youtube), all of the cleaning services could be completed with very little supplies, experience or tools in probably under 30 minutes. By doing this I could have saved myself over $200. They also tried to charge me $39 for environmental disposal and shop supplies. Knowing that they only supplies they used was mass airflow cleaner ($8 for a bottle that probably would service 10 or more cars) and that they more than likely got paid to scrap my alternator, I pushed back and they decided not to charge me this fee. Previously I have had a good experience at another University Tire (Seminol Ct.), but I really feel like I was mistreated and taken advantage of at this University Tire and Auto (Pantops). I would be very wary about any extra services that they recommend.

I have nothing but wonderful things to say about University Tire and Auto Center !! Was very pleased with my service today and I will be returning with my business as well as referring friends here. I called today at 12:30p.m. and spoke with a kind gentlemen whom I explained my situation to that I needed an alignment, tire rotation as well as an oil change, ALL BEFORE FRIDAY. Anywhere else you would have been told it would be days before they could do all of that work, however he said bring it down on your lunch break, we'd be happy to drive you back to work and it will be finished when you get off work at 5:00. Everything was completed perfect and in a timely manner. Thank you everyone at University Tire and Auto on Pantops for making my 2008 GMC Yukon a happy vehicle.

I've been taking my car here for 2 years, and they always do good work. I came in at 4:50 on a Tuesday because my tire was rapidly losing pressure. They had my tire fixed in less than an hour AND didn't charge me a cent. Definitely recommend. (See picture of the screw they pulled out!)

I dropped my car off for inspection in Feb. 2015. I was informed the car had a power steering leak and would need a new rack and pinion for $1400 to pass inspection. Also 2 new belts were recommended for $600. Luckily they couldn't get the rack and pinion that day and I had time to get a second opinion. I took it to 2 other places, both said the rack boot had a small tear, which was required to be replaced for inspection, but there was no leaking power steering fluid like University stated. I had a quote of $180 at one shop, $160 at the other. I ended up paying $260 for the new rack boot and 2 belts at another shop. I had the oil changed the same day at University, and then noticed a puddle where I park my car. I decided to look under the car and discovered oil running down the filter. The filter was loose! That is completely unacceptable. How could this mechanic continue to have a job? This could have ruined my engine if I didn't catch their mistake. Do not take your car here. Go to Peacock, By Word of Mouth, or Tuffy Muffler

After $1,400 worth of work, wasn’t quite a good experience to drive off the lot with 4 loose tires! Made it about a mile and had to turn right back around. The mechanic who did all the work tried to convince us it was just the 2 new tires. After arguing that he needed to take it for a test drive, he did ... and felt sorry when realizing he had not tightening the tires!! Up on the lift the front left was so loose it was easy to move back and forth. Wow. You can imagine I have very little faith that any of the $1400 worth of work was done correctly. Will never return and caution others as well.

Absolute worse. Purchased a tire from there 5 months ago only to find out that they put the wrong size tire on my car. If that's what they specialize in, why did they not check to make sure it was the correct size? Make matters worse, he acted like it was partly my fault. I go back and was offered a $50.00 credit, really!? Keep your $50.00 credit that won't even cover my oil change. How about reimbursing my credit card that I used to purchase that tire...I hope no one ever asks me about them because I have nothing good to say.

I went in for a deal on tires that was advertised on the internet. When I called to schedule the appointment the day before they said they had the tires in stock. The next day they waited until my car was apart to tell me they were out of those tires and I had to choose another set at regular price. Last time I go to this place for anything. Feel free to roll the dice on your car but you're betting a couple hundred dollars on one roll.

I brought my car here for inspection, and I chose this location because they told me there was a shuttle. Turns out the shuttle would take at least a half hour, for an hour and a half inspection. I stayed and waited that hour and a half, to find out that the car wouldn't pass inspection without over $400 of work, including a "broken light" and "loose exhaust." I took it to a local mechanic that we trust, who found out the light was not broken (the light cover was cracked), and the exhaust wasn't loose but had a hole that was leaking CO2 into my car! This inspection was apparently thorough enough to warrant $400 worth of repair, but actually inadequate for keeping the drivers safe. Unsafe, exploitative business practices.

CAUTION. THEY WILL SCAM YOU. They failed my van for state inspection due to a "power steering leak." When asked to show us the leak, they were unable to. And STILL would not pass it. We had to get the Virginia State Police to come and ORDER them to pass the vehicle. Unbelievable. Thanks to the VSP for their time and assistance!

I brought my car in to have the air conditioner charged. I was told that it couldn't be charged due to a blockage and that it will needed diagnostic work done before it could be charged. I enlisted a co-worker's husband to see if he could charge my air conditioner. He did and it took less than 30 mins. I contacted Bill the manager and told him about what happened and how disappointed I am. He apologize right away and said he would refund my money. He did exactly that, now I am going to be very skeptical about taken my car there for other car care needs.

I WILL NEVER GO BACK!!! I went in to get a state inspection. I knew my car was in good condition and that I would pass. After waiting they told me in order to pass the inspection I needed back brakes and rotors. I was surprised because I had that done a few months ago. He told me they would put a rejection sticker on my car if I did not get the repairs done that day for almost $400. I said no and got the rejection sticker. The next day I had my father take it to a different University Tire location and it passed the inspection! They told him my car looked good, no problems! I was in total disbelief because they tried to get over on me at the Pantops location. Was it because I’m a young women?? When my father took it elsewhere it was perfectly fine! This goes to show how mechanics stereotype women thinking we have no idea about our cars and they try to take advantage of us!!

Mother went there to have tire repaired. First the gentleman at the counter said they wouldn't plug it if it had already been plugged. Well the plug that was in it was something we did and was NOT in right to begin with. Was still leaking air but made it there.We could pull it out by hand. After waiting over an hour they took vehicle back to inform her they didn't feel "comfortable" because it had some dry rot around it. FYI inspection is only about 2 months old. Backed the vehicle out was not helpful one bit. Wasn't any " mam you do have a spare tire we could put on for you." Not very good customer service and apprently no knowledge. Two too many reasons why they couldn't do it....

Around 3 months ago, they changed my front brake pads during state inspection and since then there was a weird noise coming from my brakes. I went back there twice to get them checked and they couldn't hear the noise, but they replaced the brake pads without any charge at the end. Now it's all fine. I'm only giving 4 stars because I still think that the initial issue was because of something done wrong in the first place. However, they fixed it without too much trouble. Thanks!

( 10 plus years Customers) My sister had her transmission flushed there. Once she drove it home she noticed the truck had a bit of a jerk to it. She took the truck back to them several times questioning the jerk every time they so called checked it of course nothing was wrong after driving it for a few months and going back for them to look at it several more times now there's a problem now she need to replace the transmission of course it not their fault but they are the ones that has ever worked on her truck/transmission. Do not recommend them for service on anything. ** Update so my sister spoke with Dave she sent him the receipt of the new transmission work like he requested, she is not pointing the entire blame on UTAC but if they had looked at this issue when she kept saying something was not right after the transmission was flushed, it could have been avoided thousands of dollars later. So at this time of course no one has gotten back to her to see if they are going the help come up with a solution to this problem, other than the response below, that they have been in contact with my sister. If you are not going to help just say so instead of avoiding this matter.

I had a very bad experience , . last year they changed two tires , at that time they were very friendly. , last week I tried to open the tire to check my brakes it was impossible to do it with any wrench. it was externally tight. I return to shop and asked them to loosen it a little, it was a 1 minute job but I waited 2 hours without any result, next day I returned again but the manager told me in a non friendly tone, that I should wait 5 hours.It was very bad experience, I do not recommend anybody to go there.

I took my vehicle to get an inspection. They rejected it saying the front and rear brakes were wore out and the rotors all needed replacing. The quote was over $800. I told them to put a rejection sticker on it and took it to another shop. All wheels were taken off and the brakes checked and they were not even half worn and nothing was wrong with the rotors. University Tire is a rip off. I will never go back.

I had to repeat my service requests multiple times before the guy got everything and then he still missed the full diagnostic test (which costs extra and I specifically said I'd pay for it); on the paper he wrote something like, "customer asked to look the car over". They had my car all day and didn't call me when it was done; I stopped by when I got off work and apparently it had been done. When I left in the car it was definitely better than before but still pulled to the right (after getting 2 new front tires and an alignment) and not even a week later the car was shaking badly and I could feel the front passenger tire wobbling. So I had to take it back and miss more time from work - I work in sales so my vehicle is my livelihood. I was told it would only take half an hour so I decided to wait instead of going to the office so I could at least get some work done; it's been over an hour now and I'm still waiting. Needless to say I will NOT be coming back to this location, which is very unfortunate because it's closest to my office. The only reason I gave 1 star is because the gentleman who drove me to my office was so pleasant! I was looking to replace 2 tires on my truck and called for prices. The shop manager Brandon helped me decide what tires I needed and was able to schedule me for later in the day. When I arrived, the service was fast and the people working there were very polite. I will be bringing all my vehicles here in the future when I need service!

BEWARE: Do not go there ! I got the worst possible estimate for repairs to be done for state inspection. They have a 100 percent markup on parts and want to replace whole exhaust system because of one bank Oxygen sensor failure. Then they have the gall to want 89.00 for a diagnostic charge included after false diagnosis of catalytic converter clogged so they want to replace whole exhaust system ? Thieves they are ! I'll never ever go there again. Brain and Dale are no better than snake oil salesman ! 1360.00 bill for repair work not needed ! BEWARE UPDATE: I have had the repairs done for 600.00 and did not need half of the repairs or parts Brian said I needed. It was all a scam and I am a disabled Vet. on a fixed income and carrying an oxygen tank and to be treated this way is irreprehensible. I feel like a good ass beating is due for these guys !!

my fiance made an appointment today for an oil change for 11:40 a.m. when I got there at 11:39 I talk to a gentleman about my appointment for the oil change and he said he had no idea what I was talking about. He went to go ask the other guy that was working there, he also acted like he had no idea what I was talking about. I waited until 1250 a whole hour and 10 minutes for my car to be serviced and it wasn't even serviced so I left, I left very unhappy I'm never going there again!

I have to give University Tire Pantops a 5-star rating for my most recent visit. I usually get my oil changes there and I had been having problems with the back tail light, so while my oil change I asked Asst. Manager Alphonzo to check my light. He did and they accidently cracked my light. When I spoke to the Manager Dave about it , he said "No worries, I already ordered another light and we will let you know when it arrives". Alphozo called and I have a brand new tail light, that works just fine. Thanks to all of the guys there!

Awful. Dropped the vehicle off the night before to be first in line for next day tell them to give us a call if they need anything. Called the next day at noon and find out the car hasn't been inspected because they locked the truck and didn't have the keys to get in. No phone call no nothing to tell us this happened and for us to come out there. They ended up calling a lock smith to get into the vehicle and was told we would be next in line for inspection. Came by an hour later and the truck had just been unlocked and we were next. Go get gas and come back an hour later and still not inspected and a different car in the bay, and we were told we were next. We go out to eat and go to a few stores come back the truck still not inspected and another different car was getting inspected. I ended up being dropped off at the location to ensure it would get done and no more run around. Will not bring mine or my wife's vehicle here again.
