Disappointing that the manager(s) is not learned about the California Vehicle Code 27465.
I called first and asked if they could balance ONE tire. I knew the weights fell off so I knew it needed to be balanced. They did not tell me about this tread depth law on the phone. If they did, I would have checked first.
I drove there - 20 minutes travel.
I spoke with the counter man to start the work order. We compared prices to balance the one tire or do all four. It made sense to do all four. He then went to check the mileage. I knew something was up when I saw another guy walking around looking at all four tires.
The service man then said that they cannot do all four tires because of the minimum tread depth law. By the way. The other guy NEVER used a gauge. He simply looked at the tires by eye.
Then they acquiesced and said they would do the one tire that need the balancing.
After a 20 minute wait, I was told that on 2nd thought, the manager said they would not balance the tire due to the minimum tread wear law (CVC 27465).
Okay, so I left having lost an hour of productive time (I'm self employed).
Here's some facts you should know:
1. My Jeep has 30k miles on it. Original Goodyear tires.
2. The LAW says that the minimum tread depth can not be less than .032" on ANY two adjacent treads anywhere on the tire.
3. Minimum tread depth per the law on my tires is between .040" and .065" which is ABOVE the minimum law requirements.
4. Therefore, my tires were within the legal requirements for repair by their company.
So my warning to you is, they are in the TIRE SELLING business. Not the tire repair business. They are using this law to coerce the uninformed into buying new tires.
What is truly sad is that I asked for a quote for four new Michelin Premiums. Over 1200 dollars. Dollars they will never see from me because of their greed and lack of informed law enforcement.
Hopefully, this message will resonant to you, the unwitting customer AND to the management. Hopefully they will get online and do the same research I did and find that they are wrong about how the law is applied.
