I believe that background is one of the main reasons his tattoo art is so superior...so incredibly amazing. Prohibition Ink is a fantastic place to get a tattoo! Relaxed atmosphere with amazing artists, especially JJ! A little background...I waited until I was 36 to get my first tattoo and luckily found JJ. He worked with me on what I wanted with some back and forth on the design, and when he unveiled the stencil on the day of, it was perfect! Perfectly clean and sanitized office with great attention to professionalism throughout the tattoo experience. I was so happy with it that, less than a year later, I traveled cross country to get my second and third tattoos (each one more amazing than the last one)!!! Going from no tattoos to three large ones in less than two years is all because of the excellent experience I’ve had with Prohibition Ink, and especially with JJ. I’ve even got an appointment for my 4th, 5th and 6th tattoos already scheduled and I CANNOT WAIT to see what JJ comes up with! If you’re looking for a tattoo place that’s laid back, has a good atmosphere, no pretentiousness, and really cares that you’re happy with the end result then this is the place for you. You owe it to yourself to check them out!

JJ is by far the tattoo artist I am most comfortable with the idea of returning to and whose work I am happiest with the result of. I got a cover up 3/4 sleeve done by him over the course of 18 hours in total. I constantly get compliments on the vividness of the colors and the uniqueness of the design. There are a couple minor spots that I wish were slightly different but with such a large piece being so gorgeous, the imperfections are so minor I doubt anyone other than myself would notice them.

Got a small piece done here by rat, it was a bit overpriced but the work was amazing and it has kept super well. Definitely a good place to come to get some ink on you, the artists are very talented, even the apprentices!!

I am blown away by the detail he got on the peony tattoo on my chest - every time I see it I can’t believe it’s on me! All together now I’ve been tattooed 3 times at Prohibition, once by Rat and twice by JJ. I have a lot of work done previously but my experience at Prohibition has always been incredible. JJ has an attention to detail that is hard to find in an artist, he has done a Goat head and Gaboon Viper head on me and they both look spot on. Rat did a small Star Wars Slave I ship on my hand and absolutely nailed it, I will be back for my Milennium Falcon soon by Rat and I already have 3 appointments with JJ booked! Positives and negatives can be said about my experience at Prohibition Ink. I did a lot of research and JJ had an impressive body of work. He had done a few geometric tattoos and they looked fine and all his other art was so amazing, I reasoned that it would work out. I asked for something similar to the butterfly tattoo but with an owl. I wanted some delicate sacred geometry behind it. He didn't show me the geometry design till I was at the shop ready to get tattooed. It was much blockier and heavier than what I had originally intended, but I thought the darkness of the geometry might help offset the owl and make it stand out more. The tattoo experience itself was good, he was a good conversationalist and we chatted the whole 3 hours. I did find him pretty cocky, but a nice guy overall. Once he was done, I still wasn't crazy about the dark behind the owl, but figured I'd grow to like it over time. It wasn't until I took off the wrap and really looked at it that I realized that the geometry is very sloppily done. He said that he used a single needle instead of a shading needle, for the texture it would give it. It gave it texture, but looks like it was colored in with a ballpoint pen. It's very patchy and the geometry design itself is completely warped and not at all precise and clean. At the time he said I could contact a few months after for a touch up, but I'm going to another artist, who specializes in geometric designs, to see if she can clean it up and add to the design to make it better. I'm happy with the owl, but not with the geometry at all.

JJ and Darlene made my first tattoo both memorable and comfortable. When I showed up to schedule the appointment, Darlene was attentive and interested in my ideas, and we chatted for a while until JJ had time to take a break. I had anticipated a surly artist who would want me to lay out exactly what I wanted, as that is what I experienced at other shops in the area. JJ was interested and willing to come up with a novel piece that portrayed my love of cycling with the canyon I ride the most. My appointment ended up taking 3 hours, JJ was attentive and offered ample breaks and warnings about areas that were going to be a little rough. I can't wait to schedule my next piece with them!

Rat helped design a beautiful tattoo to my husband's specifications and talked us through the whole process. Reasons why we chose here over other parlors: - Excellent ratings compared to other parlors (seriously, go look at the statistical distribution, I'll wait) - Their website has the best, clearest, most detailed instructions of any I found for what to expect and how to care for your tattoo after. They also gave us additional instructions while we were there. Glad we chose here. :)

100% would reccomend to anyone. Rat did such an awesome job with matching tattoos for my boyfriend and I. It was my first tattoo and he had me totally comfortable. He was SUPER sanitary which was awesome, took time to make sure we were 100% about the design and placement- he offered his own ideas that we ended up having him do, and they turned out awesome. He told us what to expect, before, during, and after, and answered all our questions. Also, he was the only one working, and handled every curve ball super well. 10/10. Will be back soon!

This was my second tattoo from Rat at Prohibition. My first one was simple, but I loved the way the shop made me feel welcome, so I came back for a second more complex tattoo. I'm not artistic at all, but Rat worked from my description and some photos I sent him to design something unique and personal for me, and I completely love it! He and JJ also worked with me on placement to get the look I wanted. It was a sensitive spot, but Rat made sure to check in with me and we took as many breaks as I needed. He and JJ were both very encouraging, especially at the end when it was most difficult for me. Bottom line, I love this shop, and will keep going back to them for all my tattoos. Highly recommend!

Rat is AMAZING!! I first contacted him on Instagram and he was super quick in responding and getting me in for my consultation. Once my appointment came around he was extremely prepared with my dogs paw all drawn up and ready to go. Once he knew I loved it he walked me though step by step of how the appointment would go. And within the hour and a half, I now have a beautiful forever pawprint perfectly done. I couldn’t thank Rat enough! One great thing about Rat that I truly appreciated when he was speaking to my boyfriend about a potental tattoo he wanted, Rat said that his ideas were a little out of his reach, and suggested to go to another artist at the shop. For me that gives me an extra boost in confidence with Rat, knowing he will never do a tattoo that he knows he can’t make look the best. JJ is overly confident and under qualified. I showed JJ an image of the tattoo I wanted during my consultation, I thought I could trust him to follow my directions for my tattoo. When I went in for the tattoo he didn't have the elements I'd asked for on the stencil, he told me he was going to add those later.. I told him a dozen times I didn't want it solid black and that I wanted detailing. When he was finished I saw it was solid black and it didn't have any of the elements I'd asked for and he said "It looks better my way." - that's fine if it's your own tattoo JJ, but for my tattoo on my body I want it done the way I asked... JJ obviously doesn't respect his clients or their wishes, he doesn't respect the art, he just wants his money. I now have a hideous tattoo that is nothing like what I asked for and has what I specifically said I did not want. I hate this tattoo so much, I'm embarrassed by it, I can't stand to look at it and I have kept it constantly covered up - it's not even a week old and I have already scheduled a laser removal appointment. Don't be deceived by JJ, his portfolio clearly doesn't represent his natural style. He's severely lacking in creativity; when I gave him direction for my tattoo he didn't draw an original image himself but copied an image he found online. He doesn't take pride in his work, during my tattoo he said "I'm not excited about this, I feel like I'm just doodle-ing on you." When I met JJ, a man in his 40's, I thought I was paying for professional experience, it wasn't until halfway through my tattoo I learned he's only been practicing for a handful of years and he said he's "faking it until he makes it". I wish I'd had the courage to walk out when I could see it wasn't going the way I wanted, but I kept hoping he knew what he was doing and it would come together in the end. I've had six other tattoos and each time the artist gave me exactly what I asked for - even if the artist would have wanted something different for themselves. This is the first time I've ever had an artist deliberately go against my wishes. This was such a terrible experience I will never get another tattoo again - Thanks for that JJ, you ruined tattoos for me. Now, I apparently didn't do my due diligence in researching my artist, my only hope is this will save anyone else from suffering what I've been through. To sum it up, if you just want a tattoo and you don't care about quality JJ is the artist for you; if you want a specific design and you want it to look good, DON'T go to JJ.

JJ has been my artist for a few years now and I can't imagine letting anyone else tattoo me ever again. him and his wife are both incredibly knowledgeable and hilarious, and they have one of the cleanest shops I've ever been to. I've never had a bad experience, never felt uncomfortable and am at the point where I just throw half-assed ideas JJ's way and let him work his magic, and I'm always stoked with whatever he draws up. I think I've only asked him to redraw two stencils out of the dozens he's drawn up for me. plus, the atmosphere of this shop is so calm and welcoming. it makes the experience of getting tattooed *almost* pleasant.
