A shop is really only as good as its artists. And while the artist needs to be proficient in their art, a big part of what they do is how they treat their customers. Lefty and his team are solid on all fronts. I've been getting tattoo'd by Lefty himself for over a decade and have never left the shop(s) unhappy. He's a happy-go-lucky guy that makes you feel at home and welcome even if the shop is swamped. One of my favorite things about him is that he values your experience, and the art more than he does profit. He constantly recommends "newbies" to visit various shops and find an artist with a style that fits their needs/wants. He doesn't belittle other artists to try and "steal" customers. He's truly passionate about tattoos as a whole, which is awesome. Every artist at this shop is constantly doing what they can to improve their craft, traveling all over the country and working with other top-tier artists. They don't let ego get in the way of becoming better than they are, that's difficult in most fields let alone art. If you're thinking about getting a tattoo, whether it's your 1st or 40th, you owe it to yourself to at least speak to this man. I've never been disappointed.

I had a tiny tiny four letter tattoo on the back of my neck.. I inboxed Troy on my fb because he was already on my friends list.. I messaged him showed him my itybity tattoo and told him that I would like a cross and had $100.. he said he was booked but one of his workers could help me.. ronnie.. so I get there and freehand draws my tattoo and finishes the tattoo. I was happy with my work and left.. later on my sister told me it was lopsided and enlarged on one side.. I didn’t pay attention until other ppl who asked to see the tattoo just went silent after wards.. then I’m like oh no something is wrong and I actually took a picture.. so I contacted Troy and he said come in..but later on commented on my fb page after I made a status saying I was unhappy with my tattoo he stated that the tattoo was only $100.. I told him he could have told me they didn’t do cheap tattoos.. I didnt have a ride but when I was able to get one I went 4days later due to the weekend .. they guy admitted it wasn’t his best work but when I came in he was very rude and immediately got defensive and just told me he could fix it.. but I felt like I shouldn’t have to get a cover up to cover a cover up I was given my money back

I have been to Lefty's twice in the past month for different tatoos. I have never experienced a more laid back and personable tatoo shop as this one. Every time I walk in, it's like I've been a friend for years. Very clean, very reasonably priced, and my personal favorite, is the artists truly care about their art. They are very honest about your choice and will even add their ideas as a spin on it....LISTEN TO THEM! They are all great people, but I have to give a big shout to Ronnie, as he did a phenomenal job on both my tatoos I received. He is truly passionate about what he does, and a great guy in general. I live in Omaha, NE, but work here in Cedar Rapids each week.....no matter what, I will drive back here for my next one any day. I'm not an individual who typically writes reviews, but I couldn't refrain as there isn't a group of guys of who deserve it more......keep doing what you do gentlemen!!

Ive always received exceptional customer service at Lefty's. I'm always greeted promptly when walking in and never left waiting long to go over a brief consultation. The atmosphere of the shop is friendly, laid-back, and not to mention the best decorated you'll ever see. I've gone to Andrew for about 11-12 hours of work including a half sleeve of custom, original artwork. He's very receptive to my input, and customer satisfaction of the work is clearly a high priority for him. Andrew far exceeds my (high) expectations with every visit. I've since moved out of the CR area but I don't hesitate to make the two hour drive to come here for my inking needs. If you like the work you see, I can easily recommend any of the artists here.

I have never been tattooed by Lefty, but the next one I get, he will do, I've seen his work. I am here to comment on the man's character. I met him via my in-laws a decade ago, and always enjoy time with his family camping when he can get away. My favorite story with Troy is the time my then 3 year old daughter crawled up in his lap and tried to peel/pick the 'stickers' off his head. I think he laughed harder than we did. Troy and his family are some of the best people I've ever had the pleasure of knowing.

Was super apprehensive about getting a cover-up tattoo, visited other local tattoo shops and was not treated well, thought it would be impossible to ever fix a 26 year old mistake....decided to go online and see if anyone else had great work and found Lefty's (they are super talented). I met with Ronnie who was so incredibly nice, accommodating, reassuring, and kind. He worked up an amazing cover-up, the procedure was relaxing and comfortable within a clean, interesting, and above all...welcoming atmosphere. His artwork is impeccable and now I have something I am proud to show off. I highly recommend this business for your first tattoo...to your last.

Ronnie is the man to see other than the owner himself not that the others arent spectacular. Ronnie is super nice and helpful came in with an idea and he shaped it and gave me a better understanding of what I was thinking of. He right off the bat gave me EVERYONES card not just his and told me to check everyones work out instead of trying to sell me on working with him. Ronnie showed me his work on his Instagram where he posts a lot of his masterpieces and boy are they amazing the attention to detail is unreal. He said he thinks the small details is what makes the world go round and as far as tattoos goes I could agree more and that's why Ronnie is my new go to artist. If you are on the fence for local artists leftys is the place to go. The atmosphere there is great and the people, even better. They have earned my business from here on out.

Surronding the store is a kind of sketchy area, but as soon as you enter the building I got a different vibe. They were really nice there and Lefty is AMAZING! I got my first tattoo there because I had heard good things about Lefty, and my parents had gotten their tattoos done by him. He gives you exactly what you ask for, and likes to add a little of his own flare to it too. My tattoo ended up being perfect, it wasn't raised up ande it wasn't faded. I would recommend seeing Lefty to get your tattoo done, he is super nice and makes you feel comfortable.

I was skeptical of coming here at first, being that I'm from out of town and have no friends or family in the area, I went in here blind. When I first walked in the door, I walked over to the fish tank, and noticed how dirty it was. That threw up a red flag for me. But I continued anyway. I was greeted by one of the artists' shortly after. I cannot recall his name, but it was not lefty or Steve, and he was very polite, and pointed me over to the photo albums of everyone's work. After shortly looking it over, I decided to book an appointment for the following day. Based on my first impression, I would rate 4 of 5 stars. Appointment day: I walk in 10 minutes early, to be greeted by my artist Steve, who had tried calling me to let me know I could come in later if needed (I had skipped out of class to meet my appointment). Great customer service. 5 of 5. As I'm waiting for him to setup, I am watching closely to see what kind of prep and cleaning procedures they use, as i have gotten infections from previous artists (NOT AT LEFTYS); and had seen it very thoroughly cleaned and sanitized. 5 of 5 for cleanliness. During the tattooing, it took a little while to get the stencil correct on my hand. Nothing Steve could've done to make any different. The lining was very sharp, and not anywhere near as painful as I was anticipating. Steve was very light on the lotion and (I can't think of the name of it, but the stuff you put on a towel to wipe the area clean with, which also adds a cooling sensation.) i wish he had added some but I continued anyway. After we got to shading, it started burning up a little bit, and he did start using the mystery cooling liquid. Tattoo quality 4.5 of 5. Reason being, one area was shaded backwards, from what I believe may have been caused from me bleeding a bit more than usual. Steve made me feel very comfortable, and as soon as everyone started talking made everything a lot friendlier and time started flying by. Before I knew it, I was all done and time to leave. I could hang out here all day with these guys. It was a pleasure coming here. Positves: great customer service, great artists, fun and friendly atmosphere, very welcoming, very very clean, and modern equipment, including a comfortable tattooing chair! Negatives: could use a little cooling gel, the fish tank may drive away customers who look for cleanliness, the front set of seating could be updated a bit. Summary: I could a great piece for a very fair price, I had fun, it's clean, and I enjoyed everything about going there. I would absolutely recommend this shop. 4.5 of 5 all day long. I have known of Lefty for many years. He did my first tattoo and someone else who worked for him has done my foot tattoo. What I love best about this place, is the family atmosphere. They treat you more than a customer. I have also not ever met a person that is always looking for room for improvement. Lefty is versatile in his work and is always working hard to become even better. I have smaller tattoos but I have had no issues with them fading or in their appearance with how they look over time. It's been since I was 18 and now I'm 29. Another thing I love is his willingness to rectify an unhappy customer rather than running away from it. Looking for honest recommendations and feedback with great work, I would suggest Leftys.

These guys may very well be great for tattoos, but not so much for piercings. I got my nostril pierced by them and they gave me a surgical steel (a metal heavily advised against) screw with a far too tiny gem—which sunk deep into my nose and was a great hassle to remove. The piercer has wonky hours that didn't real work for me, and the aftercare advice they gave was outdated and incorrect. Five days of pain and suffering later, I finally removed their screw from my nose and put in something better (titanium with a massive gem so it won't sink in), and my nose has been doing exceptional since. I am perfectly willing to attribute their lack of communication and whatnot to human error and to the fact that they were moving to a different site, but overall I disliked the area and the service I received.

I absolutely love this place. While I have yet to get a tattoo here, I've been pierced twice and each time was better then expected. They take the time to listen to you when you're a big baby like myself and really go into the care of your piercing. Their prices aren't cheap by any means but you pay for the quality and I have yet to have any issues. Their jewelry is awesome too, not some cheap crap that turns your skin green. Their shop is clean and professional, you walk into a warm environment with professional artists who clearly love the job they do and are extremely talented. Anytime someone asks me where to go for a piercing or tattoo in Cedar Rapids Leftys is always at the top of my list (:
