Overall great service here. When I first moved to Bellingham a few years ago I went with this salon because 1)They had a photo of a dog on their homepage (Chubs hangs out in salon!), and 2) It's near my house. I got VERY lucky being randomly assigned to Molly. Not only did I find it cool that she's also from WI, my home state, but she does a fantastic job. She listens and gives great suggestions. It's obvious she really cares about her work. She is detail oriented, takes her times, and double checks everything to make sure your hair is perfect before you leave. The Salon itself is great: clean, well decorated, inviting, and overall very welcoming staff.

I went to Sandalwood to have 14" of my hair cut off. I'd had long hair my whole life, so I was a little apprehensive about such a major change. From the moment I walked in the door, I felt totally at ease. My stylist, Jen, took great care of me from the time I sat down to the time I walked out the door. She listened to what I wanted, suggested some things to create a flattering new style, and gave me tips to keep my style looking cute. Everybody says my new 'do is really cute and it looks very natural, like I've had it forever. I'm so pleased with my experience! For the time and attention spent on my hair, the price was right. It's more than I would have paid for an ordinary trim or minor change, but it's a fair price for what I got. I know that at other salons in Bellingham, I would have paid much more and received less attention and care. And where else can you find a salon dog as sweet as Chubb? :)

I visit Sandalwood to see Mikayla every month, and she is incredible. She's friendly and attentive, constantly improving her craft, and always listens very well. My hair never looks as good as when Mikayla does it. She is a hair wizard! The vibe in the salon is luxurious, but I've found the prices reasonable for how much love and time is spent on each client. I could go on and on, but I'll stop here with: 10/10, would recommend. ✨ UPDATE: I have also seen Caitlin for facials twice now and can attest to the quality of this service, too! She is so soothing in her nature and is clearly doing her life's work. The space is comfortable and private, and getting a facial has drastically changed my skin (bye cystic acne)! If you're on the fence, this is your sign: do it!

BEST BLONDE IN BELLINGHAM!! I came in here on the recommendation of a good friend (with gorgeous long blonde hair) after years of merry-go-round stylists, bleached out warm hair and an underdone choppy bob. None of which were a good look on me :( I first waited for Toby to get me in her busy schd (this is who my friend sees) and was pleased to get the most meticulous hair cut I've had in years. Her skill at cut and color is truly impeccable. The color, however, turned much darker than I had expected although it was true to the ash tone I desired. Toby was such a pro and didn't bat an eyelash. She was happy to get me in at her earliest convenience, which was awhile, or have another stylist who specialized in "dimensional blonde" fix me up sooner. I opted for the sooner and am ELATED!! Enter the amazing, the one, the only KRISTIN STEWART, I have been blond all of my adult life and I have never had my hair done so well. She does a combo foil at the root/ balayage towards the ends that came out natural but striking with the brightest pops framing my face. Ah-ma-zing!! The color is cool and pearly with lots of depth. I think she is a relatively undiscovered and it's only bc I book my appts out months in advance anyway that I'll share at the risk that she'll get all booked up. Already referring my local friends too her too. Also, there is no better blond than Aveda blonde. It has the best hue and least damage and I've already been all over town. Go, book an appt today!

Very professional cut and color, but not what I requested. We discussed style and color at length but didn't seem to connect well. Lovely atmosphere. Great products that are cruelty-free and good for the planet.Review is based on just one visit and I'd give them another try with a different person.

I recently moved to Bellingham and I was looking for a new salon to go to. Sandalwood seemed like a really cool place so I called, explained what I wanted in full detail and set an appointment. (Super good service over the phone!) After hanging up I had a moment of worry that I wasn’t clear enough and I wanted to make sure I was booked for the proper amount of time, so I called back and confirmed the time would be adequate. Attached is a picture of almost exactly what I wanted. I currently have 4 month grown out balayaged hair, and I wanted ALL of it to be brought back to my natural dark brown colour EXCEPT for the face-framing highlights (kind of like Rogue from X-Men). I was booked for an all-over colour and flash-foils, which in my head made sense because my whole head would need to be darkened with one colour and then the highlights around my face would need to be brought up and toned. Based on my previous salon experience, I expected this to take about two hours. I know it can be difficult to bring lighter hair down to a darker level, but I was prepared for some initial fading and a second pass further down the line. I arrived for my appointment on time, filled out a form, and then sat down to wait. I waited for half an hour, not a big deal to me as I understand that things happen. Finally I got taken back and started explaining what I wanted and the stylist began reminding me its summer time and I would want to keep my balayage. I said I’ve had it for years and I like the look of long, dark, hair. It took nearly 15 minutes of me being very specific and showing pictures to get us even on the same continent of understanding. While I understand what I was going for may not have been for everyone, I was made to feel very bad about it by someone who wasn’t understanding it. She kept telling me that she could stripe in darker colours in back and I would say “but I want it ALL dark” and she would be like “ok we can dye it dark and then just keep the blonde the way it is up front” and I would say “the face-framing blonde is old and needs to be brought up and toned, which is why I booked for flash foils.” The picture that I have attached does have some balayage around the head and I explained that I saw this in the picture but what I really liked about it was the placement and tone of the face framing highlights. Not even two minutes later the stylist said “look I know you like this picture but in this picture she still has highlights around the head and to do that we would need to do a full balayage.” And I had to remind her that I already told her to ignore that part, and that I wanted no highlights on the rest of my head. Still not understanding me, the stylist began talking about how I should have been booked for a partial balayage but booked for 3 hours, I explained that I had been very clear over the phone and had no control over that and she said “yeah I know, I think one of our newer receptionists booked you.” By this time it was almost 4 (my appointment was for 3) and the stylist said she had an appointment of her own and needed to leave by 5, she started pinning my hair up and I was like “an hour really doesn’t seem like enough time” and she said “yeah you’re right, let’s just reschedule you.” I had given up by this point and my confidence was really shaken and I just wanted to leave so I told them I would just call to reschedule and then left. I had also booked for a bang trim, which I’m sure could have been done instead, but I just wanted out. I have never had an experience like this before as I really respect the craft of doing hair. I did not think I was asking for something crazy or asking too much, and I even almost did it myself but I didn’t feel confident enough with getting the right tone of blonde. Sandalwood seems like a cool place, but they need to book their appointments better and fully listen to clients, I was really shaken by the experience and it was sad to walk out with the same hair I walked in with, I was ready for a change.

I have been going to Toby (the owner) for years now. She does a great job trimming my hair to a style that works with my hair. Her coloring skills are amazing. I always get lots of compliments on my hair. The salon is beautiful and they use Aveda products.
