I worked at Cooper Spa for a few months this past year and throughout the holidays season. The spa is great and the massage therapists and estheticians are for the most part very professional and kind. However, the front desk staff is a mess. The lack of professionalism from most others was an issue for me from the get go. The staff gossiped non stop in front of customers and I found myself constantly embarrassed by how unaware of their surroundings and the blatant lack of customer service skills some of the girls presented. I pride myself in doing a good job regardless of the situation and I felt very alone in this regard. Knowone seemed to care and it shows in their interactions. The real issue lies in management. Erica, the spa manager, is an amazing, genuine and patient woman. She is welcoming, understanding and kind at all times regardless of the stress/busyness level. She truly was a great manager. The real issue lies with Lisa the relatively newly appointed Spa Director. She presents herself to others as arrogant, cold, disinterested and entitled from the get-go. She seems to have zero interest in making her staff feel valued and would ignore us much of the time. We would go shift after shift and never see her set foot out of her basement office. I understand designating duties to Erica but Lisa had near to zero communication with her staff except through email. Her lack of communication made the customer service issue go unnoticed. Erica was constantly pulled in numerous directions since she appeared to be compensating for where Lisa's management was lacking. When I brought concerns of mine to Lisa's attention, she became defensive and replied with an excuse for each thing I mentioned. She then went as far to call me insubordinate and not a team player all for voicing the issues at hand. This and her disinterest in her staff, and lack of professionalism, was nothing I had ever experienced in a work place. Seeing no timely resolution ultimately lead to me quitting. I personally believe Erica should be in Lisa's position as she works twice as hard as Lisa, is kind, and interested in her staff. I have hopes that Lisa is a good, genuine, and interested person and that upper management is just not suitable for her personality or skill set.
