As a bodybuilder who trains five days a week, I’m in need of massage therapy to ease sore muscles, speed recovery time, and avoid injury. Having recently relocated to the region, I was relieved to find Washington Green Spa, which hosted several 5-star reviews. Sadly, this was not my experience. During my first session with Kristen, after informing her I had tightness in the top of my trapezius (muscles of the upper back), she stated the problem was my glutes and instructed me to completely disrobe. I was alarmed: Having had weekly bodywork done over the past two years, no therapist had ever suggested my posterior region was the reason my lower neck hurt and, in all my time spent on a massage table, had never been told to completely disrobe. My deer-in-headlights reaction made Kristen chuckle and ask why I was apprehensive. I explained to her I’d recently suffered epididymitis and, as part of the diagnosis, had undergone a rather embarrassing and traumatic ultrasound. She assured me I was in good hands. I reluctantly consented because, put simply, I wasn’t a massage therapist. Kristen started working my upper back and nonchalantly complimented my hair before moving to my shoulders. She giggled. I asked what was so funny. She paused, before announcing the muscle separation between my deltoids (shoulder muscles) was so pronounced, she could feel the division between them. She then compared my body to hers, stating she could stand to lose a few pounds, but, undoubtedly, the size of her breasts was a contributing factor. I was speechless. As I lay uncomfortably nude before her, my therapist was bringing undue, uninvited attention to her breasts. Instead of avoiding it, Kristen seemed set on making me relive my ultrasound experience. She noted my iliotibial band, a ribbon of tissue running from hip-to-knee, was tight and recommended adductor (inner thigh) exercises. I said nothing: I, and she, knew this would cause muscle stress that would need to be treated. Again, not being a physiology expert, I took her advice and started adductor training. It wasn’t until later—after speaking with a personal trainer, neuromuscular therapist, and a doctor—I learned adductor exercises increase, not lessen, iliotibial band tension. This made me wonder whether it had been necessary to disrobe in order to treat my trapezius. The next time I met with Kristen, I was understandably anxious about the day’s treatment, but it wasn’t the adductor therapy that would be the cause for alarm. Midway through the session, abruptly and without provocation, she asked, “What actresses do you find attractive?” I was shocked; she was less-than-subtly asking what qualities I found desirable in women. I’d overlooked her flirtatious bedside manner because her therapy had relieved a portion of the strain brought on by weight training, but this was too much. I nervously counted down my remaining time. The session over, I found Kristen waiting for me in the lobby. She announced that her upcoming vacation overlapped my next appointment. Instead of suggesting a coworker fill in, she stated she would happily come in the day she got back; a day she wasn’t normally scheduled to work. When I insisted she not, she demanded the administrative assistant book me. I canceled my remaining appointments once I arrived home. Shortly thereafter, a hand-written card arrived in the mail. It was from Kristen, asking me to return to the spa (see picture). Fearing this may happen to someone else, I contacted the spa’s owner, Regina, informing her of what had taken place. Perhaps misdirecting her anger—instead of offering an apology—she stated she was sorry “for any communication with myself or staff that was not to your [my] liking,” thereby implying she supports her employee’s overtly sexual behavior and flawed therapeutic advice while approving such ethically-questionable, unprofessional activities in her place of business. A disappointing and regretful experience at one of the larger spas in the Washington region.

I had one previous massage experience before I saw Kelly at Green Spa and it wasn't a good one, so I was apprehensive. But I was having such neck pain that I saw Kelly from a friends referral, and she was AMAZING!!!! She explained what she was going to do, asked me questions about my condition and my previous experience with massages and she made me feel very comfortable!! I just can not say enough good things about her!!!!! !! I've seen her twice now and I plan on seeing her every few weeks!! Highly Highly recommend her and Green Spa and Wellness!!!
