Dear HYDR Hemoer, I have made some revisions to your rough draft: THIS PLACE IS TERRIBLE! If you're a freshman do not live in Byrd Hall. They do not care about the students who live there. There are a lot of problems that Maintenance needs to fix. At the moment I am dealing with cold water in the showers! It is wintertime and we could get sick! Nobody cares! The staff goes home to their hot showers and we’re left here to get pneumonia. That is a severe problem! That is an emergency! I called the person in charge and she never got back to me! The carelessness is outrageous. Some of the staff are rude and unapproachable, including an art teacher named Miguel. He is highly rude to his students. RUN WHILE YOU CAN! Please feel free to email me if you have any questions. These revisions only address spelling, grammar, and punctuation; I can advise on ways to improve your composition and style, but that would require a more in-depth discussion. The staff members go the extra mile to help anyone. Yes, academics do come first, but Virginia State University does know how to create great memories, and get students involved. If you want to continue your education, this is NOT the place for you! After serving for 6 years and becoming a mother of 3, I wanted to continue my education. I had a hard time communicating with the financial aide office, and no one had answers. It was very frustrating. I'm about to withdraw because of the financial aide office and their horrible horrible service. It is midterm and I have yet to have my accounts paid not to mention get a refund check. I have had confirmation for two months that the school has received their money, they have just neglected to pay it! There is also no student community, most students see that you are excelling in the class and they want to piggy back on your success. There are many rude students who disrespect the professors and other students. STAY CLEAR OF THIS PLACE!

The experience I had at Virginia State University is one that I can not justly put into words. The overall atmosphere is completely welcoming. In the classroom the teachers are more than willing to go the extra mile to make sure the material if fully understood. The top three things I worried about entering VSU as a Freshman.... Classes- Classes freshman year are just a little more challenging than High School. For example, you have a lot of homework, but plenty of time to do it. Professors have office hours so go see them if you need any help. Secondly, Food (I love to eat!) - the food here has its days. Sometimes it is good and other days it’s not so good, but always edible. It is much better than my high school cafeteria food, I just miss the way my mom seasons her food! Third, Safety- I honestly have never felt afraid at night on campus, and I have had night classes. The campus is well lit, equipped with safety boxes, and we have a free security escort service that you can use. Last piece of advice: manage your time well and do your best! :) I am a Sophomore Business Management student.

The Virginia State University, like no other. As a rising junior, honors student, biology major with a minor in math, a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated as well as a social organization, my experience has been great! I have bonded with so many people and shared great experiences with my professors. Because I am an out-of-state student and 5 to 6 hours away from the university, it was a little hard adjusting however because of the warm atmosphere and friendly students, it did not take long to adjust. Virginia State University is a very family oriented university. The professors are wonderful and have a genuine care for their students. The Biology Department and the Mathematics Departments are two great departments at the school and are involved with their students to make sure they are afforded many opportunities. These departments may be tough at times but the professors are there to help. My advise to prospective students is to not overlook Virginia State University. It is a wonderful university, from academics to social life. There are so many organizations (academic or social) to be involved in that will interest all students. I love my school and I am glad I chose this university.

Being that I went to a very diverse high school, it was an adjustment to be around mainly African-Americans. As the months went on, I grew to LOVE Virginia State. You have to make it fun and interesting and get involved. The classroom sizes are good because the teachers actually get to know you by name and have a relationship with you.
