The West Valley 1 & West Valley 2 campuses of APA are wonderful! They have very caring & well-educated administration, teachers, and staff. They do everything they can to help every child succeed. I do wish the teachers were paid more and appreciate the opportunity to donate to them through a foundation that APA has set up.
My children have been pushed academically (without being overwhelmed) and have loved APA. My first child entered (via lottery - we tried for 2 years) in 4th grade and stayed through 9th grade. At that time, he decided to transfer to a public high school because he wanted to attend the Granite Technical Institute and take auto-body classes & swimming at the high school. The decision was also influenced by the only LDS seminary option being early morning (at a nearby high school about 1/2 mile away from APA) - and it was far enough away from our home to make the early morning schedule quite challenging.
The environment is quite structured and if kids begin at APA in kindergarten, they'll learn organization and time management in addition to their core subjects. We also love the focus on music, art, physical education, & reading.
If parents are not interested in being active participants in their child's school & education, this may not be the best choice. I've heard (from my children) about a few instances where students were asked to find another school (or they left voluntarily). My kids were happy to see the bullies & misbehaving kids go.
Good behavior is modeled, taught, & expected!
In our opinion, this is one of the top schools (charter or otherwise) in the area and we recommend it without reservation. We almost moved out of state a few years ago and one of the main factors in keeping us here was our experience at APA.
