Walnut Hills is an amazing school. You would rather send you child anywhere else. However walnut is only for the strongest of kids, weak minded individuals will be quickly left behind socially and academically.

What I have learned from Walnut: No matter which schools you are considering, always look beyond the test scores and surface images. Pros: * Because of Walnut's method of obtaining the highest scoring test takers in the district, and what has resulted from that, the Walnut name is well known for their academics, and therefore will look "good" on college applications. * Because of Walnut's high scores, the school and students are offered more readily opened doors to some scholarship and academic opportunities, which may not be as easily accessible in other schools within the district. * They have a large variety of sports and clubs * A variety of fundraising events * Lots of opportunity to be involved * A good selection of AP classes Note: The curriculum of the AP classes that are offered at this school is the same at any other school that offers that same AP class. This is true because all AP classes prepare the student for a national AP exam in that particular subject, which is standardized across all states. Some of the teachers may produce a well orchestrated class environment that is conducive to student's learning more than what is needed for the exam. Some teacher's will have little ability or desire to teach beyond the exam, and some teachers will not even teach what is required to pass the exams. This is true for all class levels, not just AP. In general, the lower the class level, the less effort you will see put forth by most teachers. This is very common in the education system, not just at Walnut, and is an important concept to understand when choosing a school so you are not swayed by appearance. * An attractive, clean campus * Convenient location * Like many schools, a select number of teachers are willing to go above and beyond the minimal requirements of their responsibilities. Beautiful facility with top of the line science labs, a natatorium, and outdoor athletic facilities that compete with local community colleges. You must score over 70% on your 6th grade Terra Nova to enroll.

This school is amazing. It has tons of extracurricular activities, just about every sport you can think of, and amazing staff. You may find a few teachers that you don't like but for the most part the teachers are pretty amazing. They offer 5 different modern foreign languages and Latin. They offer tons of AP classes. The student body is pretty diverse which some people may not like but in my opinion, it's a good thing. You can meet people from all different cultures and religions. You can meet people with all different interests. Thete is friend for everyone. Although the student body may be quite large, making it hard to get around the hallways, the experience you get from going to school there is worth the traffic jam in the hallways. This traffic jam may be intimidating to younger students but they will get used to it.

Attending this high school was an opportunity that I would not have had if I went somewhere else. The academics are hard but they help you develop good habits. I met a lot of nice people and made good friends. The school is pretty diverse, so you will be able to meet different types of people and discover different types of cultures. I enjoyed going to this high school and couldn't imagine my high school experience anywhere else.

Frank Tyson's comment is quite fictitious. First he states that Latin is not useful. Wrong! It is so incorporated in our English language that it helps one with their English. It's just a fact; WHHS is one of the best schools in the nation.

More Than A Latin Teacher It was quiet in the Latin wing. Too quiet. I wandered the lonely halls alone but I couldn't help but feel that something was wrong. But I didn't know what. Quietly, I cautiously meandered past the classrooms until I came upon one that struck a nerve with me. Room 2105. And then I knew. Whatever was wrong had something to do with this room. I took out my phone and snapped a photo of the classroom. I did this only because something told me this would help me figure out what was going on. And as I inspected the photo, I noticed a man. A man devoid of hair except for one place. His goatee. There was something so wicked, so twisted with that goatee. I looked up from my phone to see if I could find the man. But he was gone. "Hello?!" I called irrationally into the halls surrounding the classroom. No response. I desperately searched the classroom to find the man, but he wasn't there. Or so I thought. Engulfed by fear, I turned out the light and ran. But the feeling of being watched prompted me to turn around. And then I saw it. The sillouette of the same man from the photo. I turned the lights on to get a better look at him. But he was gone. Just...disappeared. I turned them off again. And there he was. Off. On. Off. On. There. Gone. There. Gone. But then when I turned them off one last time he was not in front of me, but behind. I felt his icy grip consume me, taking me over. As I cried for help, I did not hear anyone reassuring me, but rather the man's voice declining all of the Latin feminine 4th declension nouns. Louder and louder they became, as I fought desperately against this faceless evil's wishes. But eventually I had no choice but to succumb. And then everything went black. I regained conciousness to find myself back in room 2105. But I had this feeling; a feeling of being trapped in my own body. And then I realized that he was inside me. I went into the bathroom and looked in the mirror. I had a goatee. Then he spoke to me, not with words, but with memories. I saw how he'd escaped from the shadow realm to reign terror on the students of Walnut Hills, I learned how he put a little bit of his darkened soul into each one of their bodies by means (ablative) of possession (genitive). And now, he had taken over me. I was part of him. Part of.... Beaven

Sursum Ad Summum - Does not mean "Rise to the Highest" it means "The Rising to the Top" as in it is the journey at the school that makes you come to the top, not that attendance makes you rise. Dr.Thomas taught me that.

I go to Walnut Hills High school and i believe that is is a very effective school in a positive manner. Especially because it is the number one school in Ohio. You may dislike it because your probably never went to that school. The environment at times can be dangerous but we are always safe within the building. Also only the marijuana clothing is a small issue but can be fixed by a simple dress code report.

Most schools (like my former elementary school) overestimate Walnut Hills. Yes, there's no such thing as an easy class, nor is there an extremely difficult class as long as you ask any questions you have or go to help night. Also, I'd like to debunk the sentence "Latin is too hard". It doesn't have to be if you study or, as I advised earlier, go to a help night.

I would like to provide a counter balance to the review by "F" below. Walnut Hills High School is a magnet school serving grades 7-12 in the Cincinnati Public School District. Admittance is based solely upon MERIT, shown by the test score for the Entrance Exam. I believe a score in the 70th percentile of the Terra Nova standardized test is required for in district students and 94% or better on an entrance exam for out of district students was required in recent years to be CONSIDERED for Walnut Hills. If students fail to perform academically, (ie. 3 F grades in any classes) they are required to transfer to their local Cincinnati Public School. Walnut Hills is all about Academic Excellence and providing a safe environment for those children who show aptitude, perseverance and a willingness to work hard and to excel. It is VERY COOL to be SMART at Walnut Hills. The teachers set what is a high bar for typical Jr. High and High School, but which is common place in colleges, and in similar schools of excellence in the US and around the world. They do not coddle, nor carry students, but challenge them to be their best. The Esprit de Corp of the Walnut Hills students, faculty and alumni is very strong, because they are all aiming for these high ideals. They have EXPECTATIONS for themselves and each other, and they plan to make a difference in their communities in the decades to come. Some might call this being stuck up, but this is what real CONFIDENCE looks like. If they are "chasing the almighty dollar" as "F" suggests, it is the $$$$ to fund their college experiences in the form of scholarships, grants, internships and fellowships. Walnut Hills has an unwritten mission to help their students garner the funds to attend ANY University they may wish to attend, based upon the student's capability. MIT, Yale, Harvard, Notre Dame... when you go on college campus visits, ALL OF THESE SCHOOLS KNOW ABOUT WALNUT HILLS HIGH SCHOOL. Recruiters can pick out Walnut Hills students from the crowd. Your student is immediately placed in the "A Pile" on the recruiters desk. Walnut Hills is NOT for everyone. Walnut Hills is challenging and sets a high bar; Walnut Hills required PERSONAL OWNERSHIP on the part of the student. Going to Walnut Hills is an Honor which is earned and fought for each day they are at school. Will your child study 3-4 hours each night all year long, and then get up early for 6:30AM help Sessions with their teachers before school starts? Will they work with other people of all races in a peer to peer manner, and hold themselves and others to account? Will they participate actively in class, learning from both the teacher and each other? At the end of an arduous week of exams, will they look at you exhausted and spent and say "Dad, I LOVE Walnut Hills" That is they type of future leader who will excel in this environment. If you do not believe these types of wunderkind exist in today's world, I invite you to walk the halls of Walnut Hills any school day, and you will see them in action. The teachers are allowed to teach. There are NO disruptive students, because such students are removed from the student body, These kids want to learn. 97% will go on to college. Walnut Hills is a gem in the crown of Cincinnati. (Disclaimer: I am the proud parent of a Walnut Hills Senior, and another student who attended for her Junior High years at Walnut and loved her experience. I am NOT an Alumni of Walnut Hills, rather attending St Xavier High School. Both schools believe in the motto of Walnut Hills Sursum Ad Summum - "Rise to the Highest"

Amazing school, however your kid has to be really smart to do well. Easy to get in even with the test, but not so easy to shine. Curriculum makes you work hard to prepare you for college. If your kid is a lackey, he/she will hate this place.

This is my first year here: It. Is. Amazing! Everyone is sooooo nice and there is no bullying, the only problem is that if you are starting out as a 7th grader (like me) you have to take Latin for 3 years; and it only gets harder but other than that- its awesome!

Having graduated from this school in 2011, I look back on my experiences and realize that this school, while having many AP/AA classes, it is not as good as others make it out to be. This review is meant for parents who are thinking about sending their child to this school. The neighborhood surrounding the school is a ghetto, which means anywhere that is off of school grounds is dangerous. Several students were mugged on the sidewalk near the school when I was there. Walking to school is not recommended. It is mandatory that all students enrolling in the 7th or 8th grade take 3 years of Latin. Latin, while being an interesting language, does not have nearly as much use as other languages, such as German or Spanish. Essentially, this time being used to learn Latin could be better used to learn a more useful, and fun, foreign language. German, Spanish, French, and Russian are offered at Walnut, so it is confusing as to why these languages aren't offered in middle school instead of only Latin. In terms of technology compared to other high schools, Walnut Hills High School lagged far behind for a while, but it's catching up. Many teachers still don't know how to use BlackBoard (a useful site to look up homework assignments), or Google Drive. Walnut was recently renovated with fresh coats of paint as well as gaining a new air conditioning system. On the the people in the school itself, the core of what determines the quality of a high school is the student body. The student body is of not of good quality. Most students are politically liberal, perhaps influenced by the equally liberal administration (a teacher described Walnut as the "bastion of liberalism in Cincinnati"). As liberalism degrades a society, liberalism degrades a student body: 50% of relationships (that I have seen) are interracial. Homosexuality is accepted, as well as transgenders, which further contributes to the degradation of the school's culture. Students are highly promiscuous. Drugs, especially marijuana, are a major problem among the student body. Even if your child is honorable and does not do any of those things, they can still be easily influenced by their peers to partake in such depravity (peer pressure). Concerning liberalism, Holocaust education is heavily emphasized at Walnut. Students are taught to feel guilty about things they had nothing to do with, and Holocaust books are apart of required summer reading, and they are required as part of the English curriculum. History class is sadly not taught with objective viewpoints, topics such as the Holocaust are only taught with one point of view (if you're looking for a different point of view on related topics, I highly recommend viewing ''The Greatest Story Never Told'' documentary). English class at Walnut is different. It's used as a political platform, as well as being an English class. Holocaust books are assigned regularly, as well as books about the Civil Rights Movement (the Civil Rights Movement is covered in English class more than it is in History class!) If you're looking to send your child to a quality high school with a quality student body, I'd recommend looking elsewhere. What your child will learn here will last them a lifetime...

Walnut Hills High School is an amazing school, ranked among the top in the nation. I graduated in Spring 2014, and may I just say that the six years I spent have prepared me so much for college that it's ridiculous. Walnut isn't for the small and weak-minded, nor is it for those who are lazy and aren't willing to put in the work. If you don't try, you will not make it. However, if you're ambitious, and willing to put in the time and effort, Walnut will take you many places. College is fairly easy for me at the moment, only because of the skills I learned and harder level of work I did in high school. The work isn't going to be simple, but that shouldn't daunt one from attending. If anything, accept the challenge. Walnut is very academically competitive, and I've noted that it carries on to the future; the drive to do better than those around you JUST BECAUSE- and it's not a bad thing! The only honest drawback I can see is that there are a LOT of other students, so it may be intimidating at first for a younger student. You can get used to it, though. Should you choose to send your child to Walnut Hills, and they choose to take advantage of all of the opportunities presented to them, they will walk out successful, confident, and ready for life. P.S.- except for that Frank Tyson guy down there. Not sure where he's going to go in life with such a close-minded (putting it nicely) attitude. Bad apple of the bunch.

Year after year voted as one of the top 30 public high schools in the country. To put that in perspective, there are 1,245 public high schools in Ohio alone. It is ranked # in Ohio. It is almost a perfect balance of 46% male, 54 % female and 43% minority. All students take Latin . great sports. Beautiful historic campus. Near Xavier University.
