From personal experience the school is a good place to be especially if you come from a small community. The department's vary in skill and effectiveness but from a neutral standpoint the school is worth considering.

Professors care and they are always helpful. That's really the only good thing about UNCP. The administration sucks, the way they communicate suck, the processes they make you go through suck, and its seems like no one knows how to do their job correctly. Example: I went to the Fin Aid office several times asking this question "Is everything good for my financial aid?" I got the same answer every time "Ya, its good" Only to find out I had to do an appeal three weeks before school started. All I gotta say is be diligent, especially with Fin Aid. Overall, I wouldn't go here, but I don't really have a choice at the moment. Best believe I'm transferring soon as I can.

A great university that does a great job educating the people of North Carolina and is an important institution for the local Lumbee Native American community. The school offers stellar programs in many different fields. The Givens Performing Arts Center Located on the schools campus brings alot to the communities culture. One issue is that while the student body is quite diverse many students feel that there is very little to do in the community or on campus if you are not a Lumbee Indian.

"Military Friendly" I can say this, they are only friendly if your military work doesn't interfere in even the slightest way with college scheduling.

UNCP is probably the cheapest University in the country to attend so its a great deal for anyone pursuing a teaching, nursing, or social work degree, but I would not recommend any of the other programs.

I transferred to online classes from UNCW and regretted every second of it. Even when I first tried to get someone to work with me to get me transferred, it was near impossible to get in touch with someone; I should've taken that as my warning. I couldn't believe that they seemed to ignore a student with a high GPA just waiting to give them money. They employee some of the least helpful employees I've ever dealt with. I did have the pleasure of dealing with 2 helpful employees, but only after a 2 week wait for a response to my numerous emails. I sent several emails and IF they responded at all, it was extremely delayed. I made over a dozen calls, to various departments from financial aid, to transfer admissions, and no one ever answered. That wouldn't be a problem if they responded AT ALL to the messages I left. This is my first and last semester at UNCP. I will make the necessary adjustments to continue with UNCW next semester.

Out of state students and parents beware. The fin aid office will have your freshman stressed and wanting to transfer by the end of the semester. BEWARE, do not transfer after the 1st semester bc fin aid will not award you the proper entitlement for the semester your child completed and leave them with a debt that hinders your students ability to transfer. The fin aid dept does NOT deliver on their promise to properly inform your student on policies and guidelines. There are no public forms of transportation. My daughter was unable to get an Uber or Lyft to the local Walmart when she was ill. She had to walk to the local Food Lion when sick with a fever and almost passed out trying to return to her dorm. The clinic is closed on the weekends and the university bus that commutes to the local Walmart is always full in capacity. Forget calling a cab or taxi as their isn't a company that services the Pembroke area. My daughter experienced a lot stress and depression while attending ONE semester at UNCP and $3500 in debt. Thank you UNCP. Parents dont believe the hype. Out of state students PLEASE choose a different university.

You get what you pay for at this institution. I applied for the MBA program after speaking with I assume was an admissions specialist. The gentleman was extremely professional and I have nothing but positive things to say about him. He told me the GMAT waiver was the last thing to be waived but I should here back with a week or so. I waited and waited until he eventually told me to call graduate admissions who after I called then they applied the waiver. I got accepted (yay but not really), I get my financial aid award letter and also was utilizing my educational stipend I have available. I get a call Friday saying if my balance is not paid by 12 then I would be dropped from my classes, yet I’m staring at my award letter as well as the confirmation that this institution accepted my educational stipend to pay for my classes. Yet they said I had to pay the expenses out of pocket or my class would be dropped. The gentleman I spoke with earlier had no answer and said I could reenroll in January. I am not going to reenroll and I would not recommend this institution to anyone looking to further their education. Spend a few more dollars and go somewhere that will be worth the money.

Was just a student orientation and very helpful and informative for a small school. All my questions were answered. Staff helpful. What I would suggest that during orientation that they speak on the financial aspects FIRST, while the student and parents are more alert, and able to ask questions. Considering that most drove either that day or the day before to get there. People say "why such a small school, I say why not??? I like to be known by my name. No matter were you go, Duke, UNC-Chapel Hill, ECU etc., (were crime has increased) just to name a few, school is what you make of it, big or small. When it comes to financial aid, be a pain, ask lots of questions and read ALL the fine print

Although this university provides a diverse and exceptional experience, they lack in aiding students for financial aid. They cater to only the upper middle class, rich, athletes and Native Americans. I feel that they should improve on providing more grants and scholarships to students, instead of having students go to into serious debt in making students utilise student loans or alternate loans to the max as the only alternative

My wife and I are both graduates of UNCP. Our son has decided to attend as well. When we went for orientation, I was pleased with how they have progressed. They are student oriented and family friendly. The quality of the education is great. Here they encourage you to be a part and involved. My wife and I both are pleased with the education we earned here.

I drove Gates County High School, SPARK Guardians, to a Robotics Competition here. The university, set up, people running it and the countless volunteers have done a great job. A great weekend by all was had! The ice cream social was great. My only suggestion and request, give the bus drivers 50% Off vouchers for the Dining Hall or supply us with lunch. When I drive for the band to Cary NC for their big competition, the Band Director and Bus Drivers are all fed for free. Food is brought in from local restaurants, Jersey Mikes & etc. Various soups and various chili pots are done by volunteers. Starbucks donates coffee. The Cary Band donates water bottles and sodas. It is a really big help to those of us that don't get paid much to begin with and it is really a Nice Touch of Class!!

It's cheap and part of the UNC Network... But like all colleges... Questionable fees and very limited use of the pool for students to use for fun... Also the bookstore is way over priced

Orientation was great - employees and staff were helpful, friendly, and organized!

No particular opinion of the school other than I have many friends and family who have attended and loved it ,which is what had led me to become a student here . I'm excited and hope to have a good experience . But the people who answer the phones there are completely rude . I called today to speak with someone about financial aid ...I had a few questions and the lady just seemed so annoyed and like she had something better to do ,it really just put a bad vibe in my stomach of even attending here.

Ryan Lawrence

Really disappointed especially since 2 months prior to my semester I completed every bit of paperwork by myself because my wife goes to this I practically did their job for them and they managed to waste my money lie to me and lose my paperwork congratulations Pembroke you suck I will take my GI Bill to a different School

If you are a minority, don't go to this school. The town this so-called university is located in is chock full of the most racist people I've ever experienced. Surprisingly, the Native American population has a problem with minority students and you have to be very careful where you go and what you say. Just walking down the street I have been harassed and called racist names by the Lumbees. I had to leave because I feared for my life. No amount of education is worth putting up with that on a daily basis. It felt like I was in a time warp and it was the 1960's. Parents, DO NOT SEND YOUR KIDS TO THIS SCHOOL.

It's a great school. Period. The classes are small and the professors care. Everybody here cares about your success.

Amanda Speed

Absolutely awful school. The class rooms are "Professors" all seem too much like high school. I am getting out of here asap. The amount of money I paid for out of state tuition was not worth one penny. Joke of an education do not come to this school

Ben Schmucker

One of the Best decision's I ever made was to go to UNC-P

Avarice25

Lumbee Hall is designed to make sure that students do not graduate! You're 6 classes away from a degree? Well we found $7000 worth of financial errors and we are charging you for that amount, due immediately!

Frankie Hunt

A horrible college. I cant believe this place is even a University. The cafeteria is filled with roaches and the ones with authority to do something about it could care less. The parking is setup in a way that if you drive and park your getting a ticket. The classrooms and offices are filled with mold and they have known for years only to do nothing about it. Walk around the campus and all you smell is gas which I know for sure is a health hazard. Drug, robberies, assault and rape alerts go out almost daily. The parking lots flood when it rains to which there are no signs visible warning you. Bursar and financial aid office's are almost obsolete with some of the most hateful lost and smart mouth people working there I have ever seen. The facilities department and their tools are so outdated compared to other campuses in the area that it makes you think the management is lost and misappropriation of funds is a must with them, that is how they are in the bind they are in. NO LEADERSHIP AT ALL HERE in FACILITIES. Last but not least the Chancellor. I mean this guy thinks he is a superstar. Which i dont blame him cause the employees treats him as so and that is waaaaaaay better that those poor students get treated. All in all avoid this place and find better. So many better Universities in the area. If you dont take me at my word just read the other reviews on here im not the only one that gave it 1 stars....

I recently attended UNCP and at first it was hard adjusting in such a small town, however, the university itself was one of the best decisions I have ever made in my life. I was a criminal justice major and those who work in that department are amazing. They are great professors and for the first time I actually enjoyed having an advisor. One guy in particular in the financial aid's office was very rude but throughout my entire experience he was the only staff member I came across that had such a negative attitude. Other than that, UNCP is a great school, the teachers are always available for you any time you need them, the administration was nice and helpful and the campus is beautiful. The history behind the school is amazing and although the town is small, the Lumbees seemed to embrace me just fine. I did not live on campus, I was able to live in a house 2 mins from the school and my neighbors were great people. If you want a small school, where the professors are hands on and the neighbors are nice, Pembroke is the place to be.

Bev OA

It's a beautiful University with alot of history behind it. I would recommend coming here. This is the stone to rub for good luck. The story behind it is wonderful to hear.

I'm a chemistry major, and this bad rating is not at all because of the science departments. The bad rating is given because they're are high up administrators who could care less about students problems and these people are in charge of academic affairs. The communication I had with them regarded transferring credit from a school I went to abroad and because of problems in the study abroad office(switching management)my problem was never solved. I learned to always get everything in writing from anyone on the campus and the whole situation made my studying abroad experience a nightmare. Be careful with the adminstration, because they don't care about the students.

Diane Zambrano

The campus is small the town also but the teachers seem to really love what they teach. Everyone is very helpful and the campus is very clean.

I'm a transfer junior Majoring in criminal Justice. I like UNCP a lot, its small the class sizes are very small like private colleges. The professors are eager to help you but you must seek the help. Their are plenty of free resources to ensure that you do well any subject. Anyone can do well at UNCP if they put forth their best effort and take advantage of all academic resources offered by UNCP. All the staff and professor are nice and helpful, even lumbee hall despite their bad rep. There is a police station right on campus so they're always officers patrolling the whole campus. I fill very safe here, you can even request a police escort at night if you don't feel safe walking back to your room at night. There are plenty of activities to on campus like kung fu, zumba, yoga and movie night just to name a few. How ever off of campus there is not much to do without driving all the way to fayetteville. This school is awesome and very diverse and cheap.

Ty

Great experience. Education is great. Teachers really care for you.The school us very diverse with all types of different cultures within the school. The athletics all around is very competitive from womens to mens sports, all get recognition for great Division 2 competition. Definitely would recommend someone who likes a small college setting thats very affordable and have the one on one connection with professors.
